Imo if you're buying a sandwich the prices are "ok". HOWEVER once you go to anything else it gets extremely high for what you get. It's common grade bbq for the most part. Even the same old generic sauces and beans that every bbq place has. It's just not worth the higher prices to me. Today I am visiting the Splendora Cafe as a to go customer. I ordered 2 Baked Potatoes with butter & cheese & 2 Baked Potatoes with butter, cheese & ham. I added two banana pudding desserts for the kids and a couple of peach cobblers for the adults. I did not order an appetizer. I did not order any drinks. The bill still came out to over $40! Really??? I just bought an entire bag of great quality baking potatoes for under $5 -- about 20 potatoes at the grocery store. This Cafe has lost touch with how much food really should cost. Use to come here a lot last year and loved it. This year I noticed a few changes that I'm not to thrilled about. The last 2 times I've come I've noticed the waitresses like to charge for the next higher item then what you asked for. Example: I asked for a lunch item (which I even pointed at) and she asked what 2 sides I wanted with it. I said which ones thinking this was a lunch, later I see a dinner charge. I asked why and she said "ohh because you had 2 sides" I told her you asked me what sides when I pointed at the lunch item. I thought this was just small mistake thinking it won't happen again so soon but surely enough it happened the very next visit when I ordered a bbq sandwich (which I again pointed at so this waitress can see), she then asked what fries I want? I asked it comes with fries? and she said yes, I said ok and then see a bigger charge for the fries! I asked her about it and again they say ohh yeah that's the next item. Don't let this happen to you. Also not happy they stopped carrying their balsamic vinegar. read more

The buildings and atmosphere are nice. We were seated quickly, even though the parking lot was full at 3p on Sunday afternoon. We started with one server but ended up with a second, both were nice. The young man who finished our meal service was very attentive and relatively quick with a carry out box and our check. Unfortunately, that's about where the good news ends. I ordered the sliced brisket dinner (~$17). The serving was large but the brisket had no flavor, not even on the edge where the spices are supposed to be. It wasn't dried out or tough, thankfully, but it was bland. My husband ordered the hamburger steak meal (~$19) with fried okra and potato salad. Again, no flavor. He said even with the gravy and onions on the hamburger steak all he could taste was a big ol slab of flavorless ground meat. The fried okra had no seasoning in the breading and the potato salad was forgettable. The presentation of the restaurant itself and the plated food was good, what you'd expect for the price, but the flavor was not what you'd expect. I can't say I'd choose to go there again, although if I was starving and it was the only option I guess I'd give it another chance, solely because of the service and restaurant atmosphere. read more

My boyfriend and I recently moved to the area and were craving bbq so we went to check out this place. We were incredibly disappointed. We sat down before another table did and were approached after them. He ordered the mixed dinner plate with spicy sausage and pulled pork with Mac and cheese and curly fries. The pork had no flavor and was dry, the spicy sausage was okay. The mac and cheese tasted like boxed kraft Mac and cheese that was extra watery. I got the sliced brisket dinner with mashed potatoes with brown gravy and house fries. The brisket was completely dry and no flavor. The mashed potatoes tasted like boxed powdered potatoes. The fries had to be cooked in old oil. The bbq sauce was nothing special. And my bf isn't picky about water and he took one sip and nearly spit it out. Love this place! The salad bar is always kept fresh, definitely not frozen! My usual order is the chopped BBQ baked potato - absolutely delicious, except for the BBQ sauce, not really a fan. I had one of today's specials -sliced brisket sandwich with fries for 6.95...the brisket was cooked perfectly, and he gave me at least 3/4 of a pound -the fries were hot and fresh! The Coca-Cola out of the fountain tasted just like they had poured it out of a bottle !..this was definitely a 5 Star Worthy place today...God bless them for staying open through this madness! read more

We found ourselves one Saturday afternoon in the bucolic burg of Splendora, Texas (pop. 1275) and were in search of lunch. Splendora has undergone a bit of commercial growth in the past few years; one can't miss the brand new Jack in the Box and Sonic along the highway on the way into town. But we ventured about a half-mile north, to a new development that is Splendora's less-Disneyesque version of Market Street or Town Square. In this cluster of new, tidy commercial buildings we found several new independent restaurants: An Asian cafe, a Tex-Mex restaurant, a pizzaria, and the Splendora Cafe. We ventured into the bright, clean space, and were promptly greeted by the waitstaff, a good beginning. The items on the menu were very affordable, and as the aroma wafted by from each dish brought from the kitchen, we looked forward to our meal. And we weren't disappointed. I ordered a chopped beef BBQ sandwich with a side of onion rings. The beef was freshly-chopped brisket, with a nice 1/4" smoke ring visible on the largeish chunks of meat. Sauce was applied sparingly, a good indication that the establishment is proud of their meat. And it was quite good; among the better BBQ we've found in the Houston area, with a rich, smoky flavor. The onion rings were also successful - hand-breaded with a delicious, slightly sweet batter, and fried to a deep, golden brown. The menu has a nice variety of BBQ, burgers, sandwiches, and other Texas favorites, like the ubiquitous chicken-fried steak. We look forward to sampling other selections when we return. read more

My brother insisted on taking me to the cafe before we took his truck for some body work. It took about 20 minutes to get drinks. In fact, brother wanted to walk out. Then, it took just as long to order. I understand our waitress was slammed with orders, cleaning, drinks, tabs, ect....but come on. She let us get a salad on the house as a peace offering. I ended up going with the chopped beef baked potato and my brother had the chopped beef sandwich. My potato was HUGE! I made 3 meals out of it. The chopped beef was nothing spectacular but the BBQ sauce is something else! We thought there might be some liquid crawfish boil in there. Thin, vinegar, spicy and not sweet like Texas BBQ sauce should be! Mmmmmm! My brother loved his brisket sandwich, but I'm from Dallas. We really cook our briskets low and slow with pecan or mesquite wood for hours upon hours, building that dark, burnt crust that keeps the meat juicy. I didn't experience this at the cafe, but it hit the spot. I could see us going back for a low key, southern style meal. Oh- the fries are very good!!! Stopped by Splendora Cafe for lunch. I've dined-in twice before and there is nothing more to say than this is a yummy community restaurant. The interior is clean and has a feeling of a "diner" with booths lining the walls and a counter where you pay. They offer table service, and the staff is very polite. Stick with the typical Southern fare of fried chicken or BBQ. Everything, including the salad bar dressings, is made from scratch so this is stick-to-your-ribs food. The baked potato with brisket is amazing! Reminds me of the potatoes that you buy at the Houston Rodeo. I also love their chicken fingers; crispy and peppery. All in all, the perfect place for a quick bite to eat. Highly suggest if you're ever in the neighborhood. read more

Just waited 45 minutes for a blt, a chicken wrap and onion rings. We were past the lunch rush, so I'm not sure what the hold up was. The waitress came to our table about 30 mins after she took our order and asked us again what we ordered. She told us that she put the order in and she didn't know what the hold up was. My guess is she never told the kitchen what we ordered. Either way, 45 mins for 2 sandwiches isn't acceptable. To make it even worse, we never even got our food. Went there with my brother for lunch and this place was much better than I expected! I had the chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans while my brother had the chicken fried steak. Everything on both orders was cooked perfectly and was very tasty. Also, the portions they serve as quite large for the price. There is small little town just north of Houston, where if you blink you will miss it. It is the town of Splendora. It was built around the train station and has since grown to a lovely small Texas town on a major freeway. There was a restaurant here that embodied the small-town family-owned style of establishment. They have since outgrown their little restaurant and moved down the street to a new, bigger location. I decided to take my in laws, who used to eat at the original location, to the new location to try it out and see how it compared to the old location. This restaurant is the Splendora Café. I went on a Saturday afternoon around 5:30 pm. There was no wait, even though the restaurant was busy. We were sat quickly, and the host was friendly and welcoming. Once we were sat, the waitress came over and asked if we had any questions and if we knew our drink orders. Since this location recently obtained their liquor license and had draft beer, I decided to get a Texas favorite, Crawford bach, which came quickly and was ice cold. The other drinks came out the same time and there were no complaints. We soon ordered appetizers and our food. The appetizers did take a while to come but when they did they were hot and fresh. Everything tasted great and had good portion sizes. Just about the time we finished our appetizers, the main course came. The food, again, was hot and fresh and came as large portions. I had enough to take home for lunch the next day. The only complaint that I had was the water that I was given tasted off and did not taste good. The waitress, even though she was friendly and knowledgeable, would disappear for long periods of time. Overall, the restaurant was welcoming and clean with delicious food. The small-town restaurant feel is still there even though they have grown. I plan on returning over and over again. read more

First review I think I've ever written for a anything haha. Great food. Portions are huge for the price. It's really a test of willpower because eating it all will result in being too full. Honestly, it wouldn't hurt to drop the portions and just reduce the price instead of giving so much... but it's ok I like to eat. I've seen some posts about waitstaff being mean.. well I've been there a lot and haven't experience any of that. I'm not an exceptional tipper or exceptionally friendly and I've always been met with great service. Minus a couple times where a newer employee wasn't as fast, or forgot a refill. So, that being said.. seeing the couple people below me complaining of service being rude... maybe there's a reason they're rude to you. Just saying. read more

Everything about this place works. The iced tea is perfect, my cup stayed full, and they sent me with a to go cup. BBQ plate was excellent with extremely generous portions. We went with waitress selections for sides, and she didn't steer us wrong. Onion rings were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Grilled squash isn't on the menu but ask for it. Outstanding. Salad bar was super fresh and cold with extra dressing choices. Great service. Clean atmosphere. Pristine restroom. Next time we pass this way, we will most definitely stop. read more

I went to this restaurant today with my family, the server was really nice, but the food was horrible, me and grand daughter had what supposed to have been catfish that was a fish called Swai ( it's a vietnamese catfish, not the home raised here in the states) I know restaurants that have been closed down due to the fact of not really selling the correct fish advertised. My grandson had the loaded potatoes it was cold the butter wouldn't even melt,my daughter had fried pork chops it was so pretty when it came you would think it would have been so good no taste at all just fried in plain flour no seasoning at all, the home style fries tasted like they had been cooked early in the day the food was the worst I have ever had in my entire life. The one thing that tasted okay was the fried pickles, the rest of it should have been throw out before it got to our table. The best yet we were charged half price for taking a bite of something . I will not be going back there for entree or anything else. There is no rating to give this place except awful. read more
