A Phenomenal undiscovered Jewel of the Desert Stumbled on The hostel this summer and it is one of the hidden treasures of Central Oregon. Traveling with family, I thought we were all passed the time of staying in hostels, So mistaken! We got one of the semi-private rooms and it was perfect for a family. Spoken'n Hostel is a pure delight and fills the human spirit with evidence of graciousness, kindness, and unparalleled hospitality. The owner Jalet knows that area better then you know the back of your hand, and will guide you to treasures unknown. All the guests at the hostel were gracious and kind, sharing stories softly, if invited and we all were eager to assist the hostel and small community staying there. Awesome stay at this hidden treasure in Mitchell. I booked the Bridge creek room for my antelope hunt this season and loved my limited time at the hostel (hunt went quick!). The room is great for a single traveler and the common area is great for preparing meals and hanging out! Very fair and affordable price for what you get and you can pay via their website. Jalet and Pat seem like great people and were awesome hosts. I can't wait to head back and spend more time out in the wild and wonderful part of Oregon. read more

I stumbled upon Spoke'n Hostel in September 2017 when visiting the Painted Hills with my daughter & grandkids. We expected to stay for a day but had such a great time that we extended our stay. Pat & Jalet are the consummate hosts, intent on offering comfort to all who travel thru Mitchell. I've returned several times over the last 2 years to stay, to hike & relax, & to volunteer at the Hostel. They take in stranded travelers as well as the bikers & hikers who stop on their journeys. It's truly inspiring to be a part of their vision of a connected community both in Mitchell & beyond. I've met grateful travelers from around the world as well as from my own backyard. It's simply part of the amazing experience when visiting the Painted Hills that you SHOULD go out of your way to visit. read more

Spending the night here with my cycling group and the hospitality is incredible! Huge bunk beds, showers, towels, fast internet and local guidebooks all provided. They even have soft background music and quiet ac and fans to keep it cool and relaxed. This place has it all and feels like a home away from home. Amazing hostel. HIGHLY recommend staying here, whether on a roadtrip or a bikepacking trip. It has a lot of charm, super friendly, with the most amenities I've ever seen in a hostel (kitchen, food items, cozy beds, clean showers, etc). Bike/cyclist friendly! I'm super impressed. read more

I find it hard to express how much I love this place. My car was broken, a blizzard was on the way, and the night was drawing in when a good angel directed me to the doors of the Spoke'n Hostel. Within 5 minutes I was being fed, the Mayor/hostel operator/barber/bus driver/ pastor was checking out my car for me, and I was invited to stay for Thanksgiving. The hostel itself is beautifully designed-every convenience as well as tons of character, and the area is great for hiking with lots of beautiful scenery, but it is the people here that make this hostel the best I've ever been to. Go, you might never want to leave. read more

Superb. Very easy to recommend. As someone earlier posted, it's a gem. Run by disarmingly generous people who want to make the hostel self-funding and get their kicks from meeting and hosting happy cyclists. The trip across the US would be better with more places like this. read more

I can't say enough for what a special place Spoke'n is. Spent two nights there as I was cycling thru, and it restored my road-weary heart. Down to the last detail, Jalet and Pat have made a haven for people traveling by bike, from the drive they'll offer you down to the see the Painted Hills at sunset to the conversation about the local community to the ice cream. It's hard to believe they're only in year three of hosting folks, but it's true! If you're biking the Trans-Am, do yourself a favor and be sure to stop here. read more

This was my first experience staying in a hostel and it was my absolute favorite! Jalet went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. A friend and I booked our stay here for one night while traveling around the desert. We had stopped at Painted Hills and there was a crazy storm that rolled through. When we arrived the owners were SO welcoming and kind! They have a full kitchen open to those who stay and they served us ice cream! The next day we were planning on traveling into the Alvord Desert and they gave us the whole run down on which way to go so that we get the coolest view as we approached the desert. Our stay here was better than any hotel and I hope to have the time to visit again! read more

Stayed here for two nights while exploring Painted Hills. Accommodations were great, the place was super clean and the beds were a lot more comfortable than what I was expecting. I'm definitely coming back here the next time I'm in the area. read more

This is a wonderful place very close to Painted Hills, one of the Seven Wonders of Oregon. The owners and staff are very welcoming and took us in for a special spaghetti dinner for participants of the trans-continental bike race, even though we were not cyclers. Seems like a great place to stay if you are touring the area. Tip--catch dinner early in Mitchell, Oregon before going to see the sunset on Painted Hills. Stay at Spoke'n Hostel before/after your tour. read more

After staying in hostels in Latin America, and Europe, I expected the bare basics. Wow, the Spoke'n Hostel goes the extra mile: comfortable beds (including linens and towels), great hospitality, warm showers. They even have house flip-flops to wear around inside or for the showers. The hostel is packed with maps and information about the local sights, and there are plenty of books around for reading. Oh, and did I mention free ice cream bars? Wonderful. We drove out from Portland in February when it is still very cold, but relatively dry, and enjoyed the chance to bike to the Painted Hills, and explore some of the low-traffic local roads. Pat and Jalet even connected us with one of the owners of Tiger Town Brewing, who met with us personally and mapped out some local hikes. Highest recommendation for the hostel, and it puts you within striking distance of some extraordinary bicycling and hiking. read more

Could not have asked for a better place to stay and rest while we biked the Painted Hills Scenic Bikeway! Jalet gave us a wonderful, informative tour to the Painted Hills near sunset (which should not be missed) - then Patrick and her treated us to ice cream and great conversation. Great place to stop on your bike trip through Mitchell or if you are in the area visiting. This hostel is in an old church but has been remodeled in a cool/modern feeling to provide bunk beds on the first floor and a living room/kitchen in the basement. There are showers & even hammocks to relax out back by the creek. Owner Pat (and his wife Jalet, who I did not meet) is a great conversationalist and is very welcoming. This was a great stop and I would encourage others to come by! read more

What a surprise. I was cycling towards Mitchell from Prineville when a guy pulls up and asks if I was looking for a place to stay. I told him I had intended to camp in the city park, but he said stop by our new hostel. Wow. This place is amazing. It is a converted church and the combined efforts of volunteers has turned this place into a true gem. I have stayed in a lot of hostels over the years while traveling and and this is one of my favorites ever. Pat, the church pastor and host who had flagged me down on the road, stopped by later. What a totally nice guy. We had a chance to chat awhile and it is apparent that this is a labor of love from he and his wife and the church. They do just everything to make cyclists comfortable. They have a van and take guests out to the painted hills for a tour (not to be missed--it is beautiful). This hostel is not to be missed. It is just the attention to details --everything from eggs in the fridge to q-tips in the bathroom and stove fuel in the bikers box that makes it all special. Thanks Pat for the hospitality and the amazing work you all have put in to create this little bit of heaven for weary cyclists. If you are riding the trans am route or the Oregon Old West Scenic Bikeway, do not pass the opportunity to stay here. read more
