The place was mostly clean. Bathroom walls need washing. Bath needs bug spray. Towels were thin and frayed. Heat was difficult to control with the one little heater. We were told they served breakfast, and they did not. Definitely NOT worth the $160 we were charged. read more

This place is unique. Immediately upon arrival we were greeted by the owner and the manager, who were friendly and open to conversation. The room was lovely with a good queen bed and nicely decorated. The lobby was inviting, and as comfortable as you might expect your grandmother's place to be. The porch was equally inviting, with a nice view of the hills. The wifi was excellent. Breakfast is advertised, but just not-very-good pastries, but the coffee was welcome. Had a WONDERFUL stay at the Oregon Hotel ! Each room is decorated in antiques and the bed was like sleeping on a cloud. Clean and neat and extremely homey. Makes you feel like you belong. Price is great with continental breakfast and great coffee. Owners Skeeter and John are 2 of the nicest people. So personable and cheerful. They make you feel like family. This is where you need to come to "decompress and recharge" ... yet if you're out for adventure there is PLENTY to keep you busy and happy around Mitchell. Can't wait to come back! read more

DO NOT STAY HERE. KEEP MOVING, STAY IN NEXT TOWN PRINEVILLE. Motel run by husband/wife team. Check-in process was on paper, with an actual physical key. Gives you an idea of the place. Before we walked in, it was 100% vacant. Every single room door was open in the motel, and we were told to just pick a room. There were dolls in almost every single room, which was creepy as hell. We had to turn them around facing the wall. Cobwebs covered the light fixtures and corner of the rooms, and every ceiling light fixture in every room had only 1 bulb working (out of 4 in the fixture). The rooms are cheap enough as it is, for a reason. Ours were $65. Most rooms don't have a bathroom, you had to go into the hallway where the shared shower stall was. My room had a tub, but no handheld shower handle. The tub was also missing a spout. It was literally just spewing water out. We didn't bother showering. The decor was eerily chilling - items you'd pickup at an estate sale after a death, you get the jist. Also - the wifi in the motel is really poor. To get any signal, you'd need to be upstairs for the best wifi strength. My travel companion and I hungout upstairs to get better Wifi as the town is in a dead zone (completely dead, we have Verizon). For reference, we were the only 2 people at the motel that night. The motel owner threatened to charge us double if we hung out upstairs, and verbally berated us at 11pm while we were on the work call. This is absolutely unacceptable to threaten guests. This is the kind of town where it's best to keep moving, as you're an outsider. Painted hills was great, but stay in Prineville. You can thank me later. Oh -- also -- this town doesn't believe in masks, and scoff in your direction if you are masked. read more

Clean, quiet and small town friendly. Nancy got me in quick and early so I could get off to explore the entirety of the Painted Hills in an afternoon. The nice thing about staying in Mitchell is that you can catch both the morning and evening lighting at the nearby geological wonder. Sure, my Verizon did not work the entire stay, but Nancy has fast and solid Wi Fi and I was able to attend my online class with no trouble. Enjoy the quiet and character of a tiny town...the cities will be there tomorrow. I opted for the higher priced, private bath at only $20 more than the shared rooms. Either would have been fine, but I can see how it might be a stretch had the place been booked. I say weekdays go with the shared bath, weekends maybe see if you can get your own. read more

My husband and I decided that early February was a great time for a roadtrip and visited the Painted Hills for the first time. We stayed in Mitchell and The Oregon Hotel. We were not disappointed. We were the only guests in the "big house" and the managers were lovely and friendly (to us). We did have a bit of a wait at the front desk, but the owner's grandson went to fetch his grandma (she was in their adjoining house and doesn't just hang out in the lobby -- if you ran a tiny hotel in a tiny town, would you?!). Our room (the one to the left at the top of the stairs) was sweet. Comfy bed, private bath with a clawfoot tub (brrrr, let the water warm up the porcelain before you get in!). We also recommend the restaurant in town -- best steak I've ever had. Our room (for us) was haunted. Don't know if this belongs in a Yelp review, but I don't know where else to put it. We checked in around 5pm, after a day of exploring the Hills and enjoying a greasy, crispy steak. It was snowing and, being February, was fully dark when we arrived. The stairwell was next to our room and the stairs are squeaky. Like, comically squeaky. We, being considerate people, tried to lug our bag, camera bags and tripods up to our room quietly as not to disturb other guests. And it was impossible. Every stair emitted a series of loud, protracted noises from the slightest pressure. Once we got upstairs, we saw all the rooms were open and dark. All that tiptoeing for nothing -- we had the place to ourselves. Once in the room, my husband was in the restroom and I reviewed my photos of the day. The room was warm (to me: I'm always too warm), so I cracked a window. It was snowing and the breeze was delightful. To repeat, the hotel was empty. The owner's residence is on the opposite end of the building. Despite this, I heard a little girl singing in the yard beneath our window. Faint, but I could hear her. I immediately went to the glass and peered out. No one was out there. The yard was lit, but I couldn't see anyone. There was snow on the ground and I didn't see any footprints. I thought maybe it was a grandchild of the owner and didn't think much of it. The next morning, I awoke around 5am. Just laid there in the dark, willing myself to go back to sleep. My husband was quiet beside me, so I couldn't tell if he was still asleep or not. Neither of us was moving, speaking, nothing. Then I heard five knocks at the door of our room. I lifted my head and looked at the door. My husband sat up. Remember those loud-ass stairs? No one had come up them. We are the lightest of sleepers (side-effect of having a houseful of children) and EVERY NOISE wakes us up. NO ONE had walked up those stairs. So who was at the door? I said, "You heard that, right?" We looked at each other, not knowing what we should do? Was it the owner, leaving our receipt? I went to the door, opened it, peeked down the short hallway. Dark. Empty. No receipt pushed under the door. No newspaper on the floor. My husband and I quickly packed up our stuff and in the car at 5:20am. Left the keys on the counter. I've always wanted to have a "ghost experience," but that was enough to drive me from the warm bed and back to Portland in the snow and dark! In doing a little research, I read the hotel employed a maid in the 1950's. She was a single mother and lived upstairs with her little girl. The child, Patty, died and is said to haunt the place, looking for her mother. That could just be a "tall tale," but I do know someone scared us! read more

I spent two nights here in May -- perfect weather for hiking the local attractions. Overall, our experience was good. The staff (family that owns the hotel) we're all friendly and professional, including the boy in his early teens that checked us in. Our room was really clean and neat (and very reasonably priced). We had Room 11, which was recently converted from a "hostel" room. It has a queen bed and a twin bunk, which worked well for traveling with kids. There's not a lot of room to move around, which was okay because we weren't there too much. But for an extended stay, it would feel a bit cramped. We enjoyed eating breakfast on the front porch. Muffins, coffee, and hot chocolate are available, but we also brought some food with us. There's also a lobby/living room that's available to guests. This is an old house, so it's understandable that there are some quirks, but a bit of remodeling would help. For instance, in the women's restroom, the toilet is so close to the sink that I practically had to sit sideways, and I'm not very tall. Also, the door to our room stuck. It had to be pushed or pulled open pretty violently. The owner said the wood was swollen because of recent snow, but acknowledged that was an on-going issue they've been unable to fix. Overall, a this was a good experience. If we're ever in Mitchell again, we will probably stay here. (I think it's currently the only option in town, but another hotel is being remodeled a bit further down the main street.) read more

I'm way overdue for this review. My girlfriend rolled into Mitchell during the off season looking for a place to stay. We didn't really know the area and hadn't realized how far we were from any hotels. We went to the local market and asked about this hotel which looked closed. We were told it was closed for winter. The person working the market offered to call the owner and before you knew it, the place was opened and we had a very lovely stay. The area is absolutely stunning. Like stepping back in time. We had burgers at the local restaurant and had to hunt down someone the next day to open the gas station. No problem! We ate the muffins that were left for us at the hotel and spent the most fantastic day at the painted hills. We stayed in the "John Wayne" room. It was quaint and kitschy. The price was great and we are forever grateful for the whole town's hospitality. This is five stars in my book. read more

The bad: 1) Staff is NOT friendly. My parents and I booked rooms to stay in on a Sunday night. When I inquired about dinner options, the staff gave me no help. I was told, quite simply, the two eating establishments in town were closed on Sundays and the grocery store closes at 6 pm. The hotel has one microwave (that looks like it's from 1982) in the lobby for guests to use but there is no fridge or anything for guests to use. So plan ahead. Also, the one woman who was working would only come out into the lobby area when a new guest walked into the hotel. At nine o'clock pm, she left keys on the table for people who had not yet checked in with a note stating that she wasn't staying awake any longer and that she charged the credit card on file. 2) I don't mind old buildings... but this building is SHOTTY. Vinyl everything. Even the bathroom walls have vinyl on them to pretend look like tiles. Also, there isn't enough outlet plugs, so they run extension cords across the hallway to different rooms. Which is a fire hazard. Also, the private bathrooms in our rooms were just bathtubs, no shower (which I think is a bit misleading). They also literally cut a hole into the wall to make the bathtub fit. My room also had a humongous crack down the middle of the floor. 3) Decor. Old beds + dry, old bedding + furniture made for a six year-old granddaughter. The good: 1) The only hotel within forty-five miles of the painted hills. 2) Free wireless. 4) DirectTV. On a very old television. The price: $60 per night. read more

Hard to overstate just how laid back, comfortable, friendly and affordable the Oregon Hotel is. The owners offered to stay up late for us on a last minute reservation, and came out to chat on the porch the next morning. The rooms were clean and cute, clapboard covered and each with their own theme. Mitchell itself is a quick exploration by foot and has some stores and a brew pub to check out. We suggest you stay here and enjoy all that this part of Oregon has to offer. read more

We really enjoyed this little historic hotel in Mitchell. We opted for the "duplex" with its own kitchen since the food options in Mitchell are really limited. We wanted to spend the entire day in the John Day Fossil Beds and not be tied to dinner before 6 pm (when the restaurant closes) and Prairie is a long way off. My wife and I stayed at the Oregon Hotel on our impromptu honeymoon, after our original honeymoon plans to Europe were postponed due to the Iceland volcano. A wonderfully relaxed hotel with an atmosphere of a B & B, but without breakfast in the morning. There was only one other room rented the night that we were there, but even so, it was a very quiet and intimate place. The "front desk" helpers (kids) were extremely nice and helpful. Felt like you were staying at somebody's house instead of a hotel. Has a charming victorian interior and pictures of the town from the past. The hotel is very close to the painted hills and there's a quaint restaurant next door. Not joking, the food shop a few doors down had a friendly guy in overalls playing the banjo. Very quiet and friendly atmosphere for the town and hotel! read more

Pros: Easy to get to the Painted Hills. Inexpensive. Clean rooms and common bathrooms. Nice towels. People in a Mitchell seem friendly. Check in was efficient. Easy parking. Cons: More run down than rustic. Everything squeaks-stairs, chairs and beds. Beds squeak every single time you roll over or micro-move. Terrible old saggy spring mattresses with thin pillows. Thin walls - man in room next to us snores, kids up at 6:30, stuff I didn't want to know. Could hear the movie of the Inn Keeper the floor below. No TV for guests (pro?). Slow internet. Breakfast is a commercially made muffin wrapped to go. Mitchell is in a food desert. Be prepared for a rough night sleep and bring your own grub. Think of it more like hostel. Not a lot of choices in the area. Probably would have been happier driving in from Bend. read more

My wife and one-year-old son stayed here for one night on bike trip from Bend to points east. We loved this little hotel. I don't know what more you could expect from a small town hotel (and I mean REALLY small town). The stairs creak, and the rooms seem to be from a bygone era but the whole feeling of the place is positive and warm. We had a room with a private bath, though there are others that share a bathroom for less $. The owners are very friendly and let us stash the bikes in back, though they claimed we could leave them unlocked on the sidewalk and no one would touch them. I think I fell in love with Mitchell and this hotel is not small part of that equations. read more

This lady does not confirm reservations, relying only on her own hand written calendar. I spoke to her twice about my two night reservation weeks in advance. I arrived after a four hour drive to discover that I did not have a room for the second night. When it became clear that she wasn't interested in helping me fix the problem I expressed my displeasure in her system. She tore up my reservation card and sent me away. The coolest thing about this place by far is the porch. Great place to chill and make friends with the other guests. The rooms are cute and nicely decorated. It is also sparkling clean and the manager was extremely friendly. As for the rest, not so good. I understand this is an old building, per the website built for a third time in 1938. I get that the walls are thin and there aren't many outlets. However, a few upgrades could really help this place out all while retaining its antique charm. 1) The beds. I can count the number of mostly sleepless nights I have had on one hand and this was definitely one of them. I am an exceptional sleeper. I've slept through earthquakes, storms, loud neighbors, fallen asleep in public places, you name it. I've had more comfortable nights of sleep camping on the ground. I think this mattress may have been leftover from the build job in the 30's. A new mattress would be a big improvement. The ones in the hostel style room down the hall were also really old and looked like they were recovered from an old prison. 2) The bathrooms. If you have a shared room, you are sharing one men's room and one women's room with the other guests as well as a half bathroom downstairs. The men's room has a bathtub, no shower. The women's room has a renovated closet as a shower. The floor did not feel too sturdy and this would not be a comfortable shower for anyone not of a very petite stature. Also the shower leaks. So in the middle of the night: drip, drip, drip. 3) Again, the old building, wood floors. Highly recommend carpeting the stairs and the hallway, as every footfall of every guest can be heard. A family checked in late that evening while everyone was asleep and I thought a traveling circus had checked in. I was surprised to find the next morning that it was a small family of four. They were exceptionally loud with shrieking children who had been obviously cooped up in the car too long. Just at the point I was ready to go complain, after what seemed like the 50th trip up and down the stairs with an astonishing amount of luggage (for one night), they called it a night. I did complain the next morning to the manager and she said "she tried" to keep them quiet. In a hotel where you can hear everything, I didn't hear any of these attempts to keep these guests quiet or maybe assist them with their luggage to cut down on those noisy trips up and down the stairs. A few other pieces of pertinent info: Breakfast in the morning is coffee and muffins. The saving grace for me that next morning was that coffee. We opted to eat at the diner down the street. Also, no pets allowed. If you do choose to stay here, I'd recommend a room with its own bathroom away from the stairs and the shared bathroom and don't forget your earplugs. As for me, next time I'm in the area I'll be camping. read more

The lady was very nice, but I wasn't pleased at all. We paid $118 on a Monday nite for a room with a private shower and toilet. The room was detached from the main hotel which was A LOT nicer than our detached room. Our bathroom/toilet/shower were TINY. Don't waste your money on the more expensive rooms. I would have rather stayed in a MUCH NICER room in the mail hotel for a lot LESS money, $74, and shared a toilet. Couldn't do what I needed to do or clean what I needed to clean in the shower we had anyways. Waste of money. read more

I am going to give the Oregon Hotel 5 stars just because in its class this place is a gem. I totally agree with the previous reviewer. Forty dollars gets you a clean room, comfortable bed, shared bath, and best of all the opportunity to meet some really nice people on the porch. Places like this just don't exist anymore ini the world of Interstate highways dominated by the chain motel all built from the same architectural plan. I absolutely love this place! Yes, it is old, but not really that old if you read the brochure. It has charm, personality, and warmth. Things that you can't get in the big chains. We spoke to two different people (employees/owners), not sure but one at night and one in the morning. Both were very nice women. The price is good as far as we were concerned and we would definitely stay here again if we're in the area. So much better than the big chains!!! read more

My girlfriend and I stayed here on our road trip to the Painted Hills. We had a great experience at the Oregon Hotel; the staff was very friendly and the accommodations were more than we could hope for. We sprung for the kitchenette and private bath, which was absolutely perfect for us. We were there in early July, so although it was really hot outside (low 100s), our room had A/C! We will definitely be back! read more
