It…read morewas my first time riding a horse, and all of the trainers were incredibly kind, knowledgeable, patient, and understanding. Reservations must be made by phone. I called on a Saturday afternoon for a Tuesday morning ride, and they were able to accommodate us. Since it was the slow season and a weekday, availability was better. However, weekends tend to book up quickly, even during the off-season, so I recommend calling several days in advance. You won't receive an email confirmation, so be sure to make note of your reservation time. If you forget, you can always call and confirm it they are very friendly and happy to help. We chose the one hour ride, which was perfect for a first time rider like me. While it would have been nice to ride through the aspen grove, we're saving that for our next visit. The scenery was absolutely beautiful, and the views were amazing. My 11 year old daughter, who has a little riding experience, also had a fantastic time. Our guide was supportive, informative, and engaging. She shared interesting information about the local wildflowers, mountain peaks, and the surrounding area, which made the ride even more enjoyable. Helmets are available on site and are optional. One tip: be sure to wear plenty of sunscreen and bring a cap or hat. There is limited shade on the trail, and the sun can be quite strong, especially at higher elevations. Overall, it was a very fun experience, and we're already looking forward to returning to try the one and half hour tour next time.

And what a booming town this little hamlet used to be. And that is why you should tour Redstone Castle. You need to buy your tour ticket in town. Give yourself another 10 minutes to drive up to the castle, park, and get over to the castle. But it isn't really a castle. No moat. No drawbridge. No turrets or towers. It's just a big house. And considering I live in Boston Metrowest - I have friends who live in larger, more ornate, tackier houses. Most of the first floor of the house has been kept in "original" condition. But since the castle has been operated as a bed and breakfast or inn by previous owners, all of the bedrooms have been updated. No telling if there is any resemblance to the original. Also, most of the furniture is NOT the original stuff, so again not sure if any of the stuff is even period pieces. It is still cool to walk around. And imagine living there 100 years ago. It's really about the coal, not the castle.

My family and I booked a half-day jeep tour to visit Yankee Boy Basin with San Juan Jeep Tours…read more Before my trip to Ouray, I reviewed a few of the local tour outfitters, but after reading all the great reviews about San Juan Jeep Tours and finding out that they have been in business the longest - I was sold on this outfitter being the one. We arrived at 8:45AM for our 9AM start time and filled out our waivers and were directed to Keith's vehicle (an extended bed pickup truck with 3 bench seat rows). Our group consisted of 11 people (adults and kids) and we all fit within the seating without issue. Keith gave us a brief overview of the trip and we were off... Keith is a fantastic guide and made sure to stop at various spots along the tour to lend historical insights plus to allow the tour group to take photographs. About halfway up to the Yankee Boy Basin, the skies finally opened on us (had been a gray, overcast sky all morning). But Keith and the San Juan Jeep Tour outfit was prepared! Keith doled out ponchos to all of the tour group, plus put a tarp over the open seating area in about 45 seconds flat!!! Luckily the rain stopped about 45 minutes later, and the tarp came off... to showcase the absolute beauty of Yankee Boy Basin! The return trip to Ouray (from the Basin) took about 45 minutes and we were back where we started just before 1PM. Again folks... I cannot recommend this tour outfitter enough! Plus, if you can get onto a tour with Keith - you will be in for a treat! And please, please tip your tour guide(s) appropriately!
