Fantasy Ranch was highly recommended by the locals in Crested Butte when I asked around about horseback riding. I called two days ahead and they had a ride available for me. Everyone at the ranch was very nice. Sage was a wonderful guide. she pointed out landmarks, shared information about the horses and the area. I enjoyed the ride and scenery so much I went with the second group of the day as well. Sidney was the guide for my second ride. We took a different trail and saw more beautiful CO scenery. The horses are well cared for at this ranch. That's important to me. The guides all worked well together to make everyone comfortable and happy. Chuck runs a smooth operation there. This is the best Ranch on the mountain in the area. My family try's to go at least once a year. They are the best. Take your family and friends! The horses are all pretty experienced and it's an easy ride. I haven't taken a few friends who have never ridden before and they had the time of their lives. The views are incredible and so is the staff (including the horses). My family coming from Oklahoma is pretty experienced in riding but there is nothing like riding up a trail in the mountains! We were on the 10am 90-minute ride in what seemed like an aspen peak turning weekend. The ride went through some beautiful aspen groves at 10k ft. Perfect day with bright yellow leaves and clear blue skies. Our guide Tiffany was great! She had a cute little sheep dog that would prance and pounce along the trail. She kept the ride entertaining and pointed out lots of facts along the way about the horses, mountains, bear marks, and told funny kid jokes. The horses were very well mannered and trained. We have an 11 and 9 year old and they felt very safe and comfortable with the horses. We rode Red, Dakota, Thunder and Flash but all of the horses in our group seemed good natured. Fantasy Ranch - Such a nice ride through the aspens! Beautiful country - Tours Near Me - Crested Butte, Colorado

While looking for activities to do in Crested Butte during a shoulder season, we stumbled upon horse riding. We jumped on the opportunity of a new way of seeing the trails on horseback and reserved a hour and half trail ride at Taylor Canyon via the phone. We arrived about 10 minutes before the scheduled time (10 am) at the Almont stables and a few ranch employees, some gorgeous horses, and other guests were there to greet us to fit us into our helmets (for those of us who needs them). A few moments later, Chuck arrived with more horses, two cute doggies and our guide - Carol. The guests were then split into two groups - one experienced group and one relatively new riders. After the experienced group chose their ride for the day and took off, we (the newbies) got to bond with our horse of choice. All the horses were well behaved, gorgeous, we were helped onto the saddle while Chuck adjusted our stirrups accordingly. My friend's horse immediately start digging into the hay on the ground (nom, nom, nom). After a short orientation on how to make our horse go all directions (left, right, forward, backward, stop), we were ready to go. The view was breathtaking with the sun smiling down at us, we climbed to a perfect view into the Taylor's Canyon and marched in a single file into the distant Flat top and Red mountains, our guides Carol and Chuck was constantly chatting with us, answering our questions and did safety checks of our stirrups at regular intervals. At no point did I feel anxious being a first time rider, my ride Thunder was the perfect gentleman and followed closely after his friends the entire way. On the way back, we were facing the distant and beautiful San Juan mountains. We learned tons about the local area, random facts about wildlife while enjoying the scenery. read more

Party of 5 of us, came in this morning for the 3 hour horse back riding tour to nearly the top of Mount Snodgrass. We all range skillwise somewhere along the lines of mediocrity, but we all had done horseback riding before at least a couple of times. The horses, for one, were all very tame and friendly, in their own crazy sort of way. It seemed pretty easy for anyone of any skill to stay on a horse, since the horses knew the drill, the routes, and the training well. We had Elsa as our guide, she was fantastic! She not only was very informative about the wildlife and geography, or the different personalities of our horses, she also was entertaining, and extremely helpful when it came to guiding the horses around. The views are spectacular, just like anything here in Crested Butte, but you also got to get to see a glimpse of the backwoods beyond civilization and cellphone service. Definitely would recommend this to my friends and family if you are in the area. Hints: Get there early, and sign up for the 9:00 over the 2:00 session. The horses are fresher, and the trainers can pair you with a perfect match with choice of all of their horses. Bring layers, so you can shed long sleeves for short sleeves under as the sun rises and it gets hot. Wear long pants and long socks, and comfy, closed toed shoes, so you avoid painful rubbing against the saddle and the horse. read more

The first ride with FR was great and the second ride was terrible. I requested that other riders be at least novice level, that did not happen the second time. Second, the owner of the company was very rude to me because I checked my cinch before I mounted. Last but not least, my tire was puctured at the trail head with an ice pick in the side wall that could not be repaired. So go at your own risk if these experience will be fun on your vacation! read more
