Spot in the woods we found out in early summer of 2025 was under new ownership. We have always enjoyed this establishment! Great pizza, fish fry & there fresh cut fries! Yummy!! So we headed on in like always-well, the new owner is basically a bar fly! We were the Only Customers and she couldn't even take our order! To busy talking to her teen children who were working/cooking. Finally got our pizza. Had to ask for napkins and paper plates. She told us "oh there usually on the tables " Pizza was pretty good. Then we had to flag the bar fly down Again just to pay!! Skip ahead to March 2026 thought we'd give them another chance. Fish Fry this time. Hmm, fish was definitely Hot but not as tasty as the previous owners served. Came in an old warped plastic basket w/mini portion of coleslaw (not the best), fries or baked potato( was 4pm-told us no baked til after 5) menu states after 3pm. Then server comes back and says, " oh I didn't know we had baked potatoes now, thought not til 5) Maybe server should know what the heck they are serving! Also, special was shrimp (which server said they were out of) glad I didn't want any. Also, heard the cook saying, "we only have 1 bag of fish left"!! WOW on a Friday night in Wisconsin during LENT!! Of course the Bar fly female owner was there playing slot video games and cackling! She informed the server that the woman's bathroom needed TP! That there was barely enough for her to use. Which tells me she used the last of it and couldn't be bothered to replace it!!! Lazy Boozy Bitch!! My adult children and inlaws tried dinner mud summer 2025- half the menu wasn't available!! They claimed the supply truck hadn't arrived yet. Needless to say they won't waste there time going again. And I would have to say the same. I have recommended this place to many people. First time we went to Spot in the Woods was for breakfast. After waiting patiently for an hour for our food, we asked the waitress if the food would be coming soon, if not, please cancel the order. She returned and said we have a new system, and your order was never sent to the kicthen..... No apology at all. WHATTTTTTTT!!!! So we left. Second try, we stopped for a drink to just try this place again. We ordered a whiskey old fashion. The bar tender says, "I don't have time to make that, would you like something else" WHATTTTT. Nope . This was a favorite of mine but no more. Arrived at 10:45 am & waited at a dirty table then moved to the bar because they were busy & short staffed like many places around here. Got drinks & waited until the grill was closed for breakfast. Settled for a grilled cheese that took another 45 minutes. It's a favorite with locals, pull tabs, meat raffles and the staff knows the regulars drinks. Maybe they should open as a private club because they don't seem to throw out the welcome mat for others. read more

Wow! What an absolute gem in the rough! We rolled in after a sailing trip on Lake Petenwell. We didn't get in until late and tried to find a place to eat. We stopped at several locations that were closed on a Tuesday night in the area. We got there at 915pm and asked for food. Sherri the owner said they just shut down the frier but would make something for us. About the best mushroom and Swiss patty melt I've ever had. Great drinks and amazing little lodge type atmosphere. My husband and I stopped in to try the pizza. We were welcomed nicely and we each had a good drink and ordered a pizza. The pizza was delicious and enjoyed the nice, friendly atmosphere and the pretty outdoor surroundings through the windows including the pretty yellow finch and the hummingbirds. Very enjoyable! I stopped in tonight just by chance. I'd never been here before. It's a nice little woodsy place. It has a nice country feel. I had a couple of mixies and ordered a jalepeno burger with chips. The bun was toasted and the burger had a great taste. I'd definitely stop back for another. And maybe a couple mixies too. read more

Home made pizza and sandwiches......USED to have the best pizza, more expensive than other places, but it WAS worth it.....The last year however, it is hit and miss....We have bought 12" Deluxe pizzas ($24) that were not as good as $6.99 pizzas in town.....I think the labor shortage has really hurt the quality of the pizza......good breakfast still, but don't get there 1 minute after 11 AM , because you ain't gettin' breakfast then. It is a shame they have let the quality of the food get so mediocre, because the price is top dollar for this market.....Another peeve of mine, is they do not take debit or credit cards.....but they DO have an ATM, that charges outrageous fees....I get it, it is easier to under report revenue, in a cash only business, but give people a break on the ATM read more

Our family was vacationing near Friendship and Spot in the Woods was recommended as a good place for pizza. Love the location hidden away down a small road. Attractive pine tables and a smaller dining area near the bar and a larger room with pool tables and more eating area adjacent. There were maybe a dozen people there and one person bartending and taking food orders. She was not especially enthusiastic but brought us drinks and a menu (after being alerted that we wanted food). We tried the pizza, and it was pretty disappointing. Crispy crust, but overloaded with cheese and just a little sausage. Sauce was pretty bland. She checked on us after we had been eating awhile, and I asked for another beer, but she never brought it. Maybe the pizza used to be better. read more

This is definitely a spot in the woods. We had driven by the sign on J multiple times before making the trip down the long (some would say scary) wooded road to the restaurant. Don't be scared, go and check this place out. There's a great bar area for those looking to watch the game and grab a bite to eat. But, I could see this place getting busy and packed pretty quickly. They have some games outside (volleyball and horseshoes) near the septic mound system (which is a little gross and weird to me, but hey, have a beer or two and you won't care!). There's a large area for those that want more of a dining experience and they can seat large tables if needed. For food, get the pizza. Everyone gets the pizza. We were gently warned by the bartender to get the pizza and we were stupid and didn't for some reason. Everyone gets the pizza and it looks delicious. And it smells delicious. Get the pizza. Do yourself a solid. Get the pizza. I got the steak philly and it was really good with the side of chips and a cold beer. My partner got the chicken philly and he was not sharing a bite. So, that was a good choice too. But, people were stopping in to just get their pizzas to go. If people are driving well out of their way for pizza, that means it is really good. BRING CASH- they do have an ATM if you are a non-planner like me. It costs $3 for the service fee, but THEY DO NOT TAKE CHARGE CARDS here. The old fashioned was tastefully done both as sweet and as sour (sweet was a tinsy bit better than sour). Get a double- it was literally $.25 more for the double. Do not be cheap. The rustic look was very inviting from the outdoors. We walked in with 4 adults and 4 children. We were not greeted, and made our way into the back room where there were other families and a group of men that had just finished golfing. We sat down and decided to get the pizza. You have to go to the bar to order, which isn't an issue other than the bar tender completely avoided us. He walked to the other end of the bar just to talk to locals instead of taking our order. This is a great hidden 'spot in the woods'. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and have daily specials. They also have weekly drawings so go in and get your name on the list! Being from the chicago area i'm always so happy at the prices for drinks and food here. The bartenders and patrons are super friendly too. Most of the action is going on in the bar area, but watch out on sunday mornings after church, it gets really busy in the dining room. This is a good solid place for a pizza or sandwich. I had to update this review, I was here back in November 2012 for a fishing weekend and we had to go to spot in the woods for dinner. Oh man this place never ceases to amaze me. If I could remember what we all ordered it'd be great but I cant.... Highlights -This place isn't frequented by locals as much in the summer due to tourists. The winter time your going to look like an alien if you waltz in their on a Friday evening. -Make sure you play the shuffleboard. Who even has shuffleboard nowadays? No one, so play it while you can. The waitresses here are very nice, always willing to chat with ya and recommend one menu item over another. read more

Found the place with no problem. The rest room was clean and our server was pleasant. Being a Friday we opted for the "hand battered" 3 piece fish fry. I told hubby not to order the 4 piece as I usually only eat 2 and he could have a piece of mine. What we got was fish that was not hand battered. Three very small pieces of fish that came off a Cysco truck. Needless to say hubby did not get an extra piece. The fish was tasty and well cooked. Our server told us the potato pancakes were the real deal and that was the truth, however they had been prepared ahead of time and were nothing more than a pile of mushy pasty potato that could double for wallpaper paste. Great Friday fish fry as long as you are not looking to eat a lot of vegetables other than cole slaw and potatoes. Spot in the Woods is a bar out in the country, and I'm sure the food quality is a big surprise unless you are a local, which I'm not. The fish and shrimp combo has 3 fried shrimp, 2 pieces of fried cod, choice of potato (fries, potato pancakes, baked potato), cole slaw and a slice of homemade tasting bread and butter. Everything was very tasty and for $9.50, a bargain too. Cocktails are good and they have upscale liquor as well as the cheap stuff. We've had breakfast here too (8-11am). The corn beef hash is excellent. I saw on the menu they have Eggs Benedict ($6.50) on Thursdays only. We may try that out next time we are up in the woods. read more

Decided to grab dinner here on October 9, 2020. It was about 15 minutes of sitting at the bar before the bartender would take our drink order. We were treated coldly while others around us were treated much better and with a smile. Ordered food and it was about 40 minutes later when we asked the bartender the status of our meal because we saw multiple other parties who arrived after we did and put in orders after we did, receive their food. The response we got was "You'll get your food when you get it. I'm not in charge of the cook." At first we thought it was a joke, but he went right back to what he was doing and we realized that our patronage clearly didn't matter. Being the honest people we are, we could have slapped down money for our drinks and not paid for food we didn't receive, but we waited. It was an hour on the dot that our food arrived and we immediately asked for to-go boxes not feeling welcome to stay. I noticed that our portions were much less than those around us and we ordered similar meals. The bartender told us it was a result of coming at a busy time, but the place was half empty when we arrived - not falling for that one. Clearly prejudice against people that do not permanently live in the area. We make a great effort to support small/family-owned businesses as a result of COVID, and definitely made the wrong choice patronizing this establishment. I have to say this i was at the spot in the woods over labor day weekend my friend and were really looking forward to their fish fry as we have been there many times before we ordered a two piece fish fry what we received was one pice of fish cut in half and they called that a two pice fish dinner they measured aproximately 3 inches in lenghth if it wasnt for the bread and potato we would have gone hungry, bottom line is they must think their customers are stupid because when i asked what happenned to the fish and when i asked to speak to whoever was in charge they said that was the how thet seerved their fish now a nd still charging $9.00 and change i just dont like the way it was handled and because of it i will not recommend spot in the woods to my friends when they ask where is a good place for fish fry as for myself wont be going back there any time soon . makes me sad as it was my favorite place for fish. read more
