Spotless Chimney REFUSES to let you talk to the owner if there is a problem (even a major one like a worker putting his foot through your living room ceiling.) For a family-owned business, I found it shocking that I was not "permitted" to speak to the owner, Daniel Lennon. If the owner doesn't care about your experience, that tells you something. Problems? 1. A worker put his foot through our living room ceiling while in the attic. 2. Spotless sent a so-called professional to fix the hole in our ceiling and he botched the repair. 3. The person installing the sleeve had a difficult time and was swearing up a storm because he (another "professional") couldn't get it to fit and ended up forcing it in. 4. The wrong size chimney cap arrived. We were then told that it was a "custom-made" cap and would take several weeks. 5. When the cap did arrive, another "professional" almost fell off the roof because he didn't set up the ladder correctly. Read more below if you like, but I would steer clear of Spotless Chimney. A bonus reason? They proudly claim to be part of the National Chimney Sweep Guild. I see a few CT companies listed, but not Spotless. That's false advertising and I've reported it to the Better Business Bureau. Details: The price Spotless quoted us was higher than other companies, but we'd heard good things about them. Warning bells should have gone off when they said they'd give us a significant discount if we started right away. (If someone is pressuring you to begin, don't.) They gave us a price and a date and we signed a contract. The day they started work, they "suddenly" discovered we needed internal chimney work in addition to the external work we'd agreed to. (Classic bait and switch.) When we said they had inspected our chimney and hadn't told us about any internal work, they said they'd only inspected the outside because that's what we'd requested. Maybe other people understand chimney work better than we do, but we thought a chimney inspection meant a full chimney inspection. When we weren't certain about doing the extra work ($4200 worth!), Spotless told us if we didn't do it, it would potentially void our lifetime, transferrable warranty (which was one of the main reasons we went with them in the first place). They also said we might have carbon monoxide poisoning if we didn't do it. We have a CO detector and it's always read zero. But we also have young grandchildren who sleep over. We had told them that. (Scare tactic.) We agreed to have them add a "sleeve." The ONLY reason they are getting a rating of 2 instead of 1 is because they gave us another discount so that we could hire someone to repair our ceiling. read more

One day project became four days, had to take time off work to monitor crew and recruit in-laws to be home when I had to go back to work. Damaged our hardwood floors and marred our ceiling. Oversold services needed. Did not replace parts such as the fireplace doors when finished and did not clean up. Sent a different crew every day that did not give me the impression of professional masons but of people looking for day jobs. Threatened that they would not honor warranty on service when we switched companies. We switched anyway. Workers did a great job and worked their buts off and installing the liner they were provided. The design does not seem sufficient for a wood boiler. I don't think spotless chimney understands that wood boilers do not burn at the sufficient burn temperature all the time. There is "very little" room for any ashes to build and you totally loose your outside cleanout capability. I will have to shut down the wood boiler to monitor the ash build up. 7" liner probably should have been 8" to allow for ash/creosote build up because the wood boiler requires a 7" stove pipe. If the system works well I would raise to 4 star. Didn't want the crown replaced but the sales dept. was adamant with replacing it. It ended up slanted which can be seen from the driveway with the cap being slanted. No form or level was used when installing the crown so the crown is not level and also hangs over the chimney almost a half of brick because the workers were working off the roof so could not see the back of the chimney. They also had to replace a couple of bricks that broke during removal of the existing crown. They installed one of the bricks backwards (notches in the brick facing out). When they provided a quote they said there was a lot of labor with setting up staging, etc. Workers did not set up staging they worked of the roof. read more

The two men arrived and started the sales pitch early with heavy compliments on the house and pets and then lead right into the scare tactics on my "very damaged" chimney and had the nerve to follow up with fear tactics on my heating system. After sending a massive estimate ($23,000) for the suggested repair work I called my heating company, another chimney sweep company and my general contractor and they all inspected and agreed this is a scam. These folks are anything but spotless. When they came out to inspect our flues, they brought an apparently dirty tarp into our living room and laid it out over our cream colored carpet. The tarp seemed like a reasonable precaution at first. When they finished up and removed the tarp, there was black soot marks all over the carpet. We pointed this out immediately and the reps took pictures and told us they'd get back to us. Long story short, they refused to lift a finger to resolves this. We were told to clean it ourselves. We desperately tried. We ultimately had the company that regularly cleans our carpets come out to do a full cleaning and paid extra for them to try to clear up the really bad spots. The extra that we paid for the cleaning was about $80 above our standard annual cleaning cost and while the carpet cleaners did a great job, we can still see traces of the soot damage so its seems like we've got some permanent stains now. We did not expect or ask for Spotless to pay for the full cleaning as we do that every year anyways, but we did expect them to compensate for the extra charges we incurred from their soot damage. All told, we spent thousands with them on a chimney top rebuild and a liner in our main flue. They left us with a ruined living room carpet that they made zero effort to rectify and I would never use them again. Not recommended. read more

I specifically asked if these clowns installed new fireplaces; they ripped me off for a fee to come out and do nothing and never submitted a quote. I have sent the matter to the Attorney general of CT and my law firm. I have owned a business for 40 years and this is a first for me. Be careful of this company is my advise. I see you do not understand the first review I posted on Google which was 10 months ago which you never responded to. I never said you replaced any flashing of roof. The flashing was damaged by your workers standing on top of the roof section, trying to pull up the pipe, moving it side to side to break it free. If you look at the pictures that you sent me before and after that I did post, it tells the whole story. The first picture you sent me, you see the flashing intact. The finished picture you sent me shows the hole torn in the flashing which was not there in the original picture you took. Which is where the water was allowed to leak into my wall and started destroying the sheetrock as pieces were falling off and down onto my fireplace. As far as not knowing that I was unhappy with the work, that is not true. I sent you emails 3-4 months later telling you that after the job was done, that I had water leaking into the structure causing damage to my home. I can post the emails if you like. Your response was to give me another overpriced estimate to repair the issue that was caused by your crew. Sure, new flashings would have been nice, but if I did not have the water ruining my wall and structure, I would not be writing anything here. As far as any other contractor working on my chimney, you were the first and only people to ever do so. The piece of pipe was discovered when my house was being sided this summer and a few sections of plywood were taken off to be replaced. Which brought about more untrusting thoughts about the work you did. I know that you are trying to deny any of this, but the truth is the truth. I know the truth hurts sometimes, and this is one of those times when you should have taken responsibility for your repair job. I was happy at first like you said, even though it was pricey, but I was willing to live with that until I started having problems right after you finished the job. PLEASE EDUCATE YOURSELF BEFORE USING THESE FOLKS!!! I have a masonry chimney and an oil burning furnace, and a house that was built in 2008. I was misled by Spotless Chimney and told I had absolutely no flue liner and that I needed to purchase a stainless steel liner for $4.3k, because chimney liners are a relatively new requirement for CT State code (within the last 5-7 years). I was alarmed to hear this because it wasn't aligned with the research I had done. I am going to lay this out here so that you as a consumer are prepared for having these conversations, and because I genuinely believe the folks at Spotless Chimney don't know the history of the code themselves. Also - don't hesitate to call the State Fire Marshal who will happily help you understand the codes. Chimney liners have been around since the 1930's, and have been required in CT in some capacity since at least late 2005. If you bought your house after this date, these codes were also applicable to any chimney inspections done at point of sale. There is also a good chance that chimney liners were code prior to 2005, I just struggled finding trustworthy resources online to verify this. Your local building inspector may know more. Per the 2005 State Building Code (accessible at https://portal.ct.gov/DAS/Office-of-State-Building-Inspector/History-of-the-Connecticut-State-Building-Code) "Masonry chimneys, fireplaces and barbeques shall comply with Chapter 21 and the 2003 International Mechanical Code." Per the 2003 International Mechanical Code (accessible at https://archive.org/details/gov.law.icc.imc.2003): International Mechanical Code) "Where an oil-fired appliance is connected to an existing masonry chimney, such chimney flue shall be repaired or relined in accordance with NFPA 31. " This references the most recent NFPA 31 at that time which was the 2001 NFPA 31 (you can start a 14 day free trial on NFPA's website to access the full code) states "6.6.5 Masonry chimneys shall be lined with an approved clay tile liner or a listed chimney lining system installed in accordance with manufacturers' instructions." In addition to this, the current NFPA 211 states that clay tile chimney liners are in fact still up to code (see attached photos for 2024 NFPA 211 code related to masonry chimneys). This is an important note because I was also led to believe that a stainless steel liner was the only liner that is up to code. I was told by Spotless Chimney that what I thought was a clay tile flue liner was just a flue WITHOUT a liner. After further research, I discovered that was not the case. In fact, what is "just a flue without a liner" would be the raw masonry of the chimney and/or an unapproved material (such as concrete). If you see clay inside of your chimney, you've got a liner!!! Congrats!! Still not sure? Google clay chimney liner to compare. To verify all of this, I pulled the original building permits for my home, got in touch with the original contractor, double checked the house inspection report done when we bought, and had 2 additional inspections performed. Now for the real kicker -- Spotless Chimney also told me I had a crack in the clay tile. This would in fact be not up to code and potentially unsafe. It turns out what they thought was a crack was just a line drawn in the soot on the inside of the flue liner, probably from the camera they stuck up there. NO crack! I am SO happy I trusted my gut and did all of this research. It was well worth saving the $4k. Spotless Chimney - I hope that you are able to use this as a means to further educate your technicians and salespeople. I have a feeling that you're going to reply to this stating that me, the Fire Marshal, the contractor, the building permits, and the 2 other inspections are wrong. Which is fine, you are allowed to say that. I just hope that any of your future customers read this and are able to educate themselves and feel confident in available resources before agreeing to any unneeded and astronomically priced services. read more

Booked a cleaning and inspection. Guy started doing the inspection first, and I asked him how he can inspect when it's not clean? He stated that he needs to inspect it to make sure the cleaning won't damage anything. He then says there is creosote in the chimney, (well duh) that's why I called for a cleaning. He then said that my creosote was stuck to the liner and they would have to remove the liner and put a stainless pipe in. He would not even clean the chimney. Writes up that my 10 year old chimney is leaking, and has moss growing on it, and it's not safe. All of which are false. Comes back with a 16K plus bullshit estimate, and wants me to ok the work. I called them for a chimney sweep. They said they would perform a complementary inspection of the chimney. When I arrived home I found they did not clean the chimney whatsoever and instead provided me with over $20,000 in repair estimates. Mind you, I have been working with two other fireplace providers as well as our fire inspector which have deemed everything to be in good working order. This company scams people and puts fear into people in order to create profit. They charged me $240 for not doing the one thing I asked them to do, sweep the chimney. My complaints were answered with threats to take me to collections. Deplorable company. I really don't know how people who profit off of people like this sleep at night. read more

Called spotless to clean my chimney they came out the next day first the guy broke the brush in the chimney then told me I probley needed a new liner I told him it was 2 years old when he was all done taking pictures he put the pipe that goes from the stove to chimney back so bad he had to come back the next day to fix it then I get my receipt in the mail along with an estimate for about 5000 saying they need to take my whole chimney down and replace the bricks are you kidding what a joke this company is. read more

It was never mentioned that there was a limit to how much debris could be removed from any of the chimney flues. It was only mentioned today when they came out after my husband looked to see that there was still debris, and a lot of it. Then it was mentioned that it would cost almost $500 additional to remove what was left, but that would be waived if we went with one of the recommendations today of 3800 to fix a problem. I paid 239.29 for absolutely nothing. I still have piles of debris and a mess that I had to clean up. I called and spoke to Thomas the manager and he would not try to make this right By even letting me pay half. He overcharges his estimates by 3x more than others. So I have a legitimate licensed chimney person coming for less than 3x that was quoted to fix my problem. Stay away from this company. Rip offs. They don't tell you everything up front. One star rating here well deserved. Spotless Chimney is NOT selling a chimney "cleaning". They are really just selling an "inspection" service. It is doubtful that any chimney they will inspect will ever PASS. Therefore, since your chimney will FAIL, they only want to sell you an overpriced $3700 liner (reasonable price is about $2100). Or have the gall to say you need an entire new chimney at $17,500. A real true rip off. Unless your chimney is brand new or perhaps about 5 or no more than 10 years, the "inspector" will mark your chimney as a FAIL and NOT do ANY cleaning. He spends ALL his time trying to sell you an unnecessary liner or a new chimney rebuild and spends NO time cleaning. I doubt they ever even attempt to clean ANY chimney. .... They get you by being available within one or two days where most legit chimney "cleaners", not just "inspectors" take about a month to come out... I spent $229 for NO cleaning at all. He never planned to clean it. ...Again, they get you on price because most others are about $50 more to come out.... I needed to reline my chimney I called several chimney services they had appointments a month or longer down the calendar. I called spotless and they were here the next day and on time. The two techs were in and out in about two hours and made sure there were no leaks before leaving. now a year later they made an appointment to sweep the chimney. Again they were here on time swept the chiminey cleaned up and noticed my chimney's exterior and recomended a rebuild. They sent me a detailed line item of the procedure that they would do to fix my problem. it seamed fair. Later Tim the owner called to let me know that they also would repair it and I could make time payments if we didn't have the money to pay all at once. Thanks to Tim I know that I will be taken care when I need to do this project. read more
