The employee in the bathroom told me I can't buy water bc it's all closed early around here, I said why can't I see the screens?! She just shrugged. And I said I literally grew up here and now this is supposed to be the second largest city in Maine and the only theater in miles and it's an abandoned ghost town!!! This place is cooked. The ticket sellers were friendly. The seating could not be purchased beforehand and it was pretty packed. One thing: the first movie we went to had a series of 'commercials' which ran for a good 10 minutes at the start time of the movie. This was followed by another 10 minutes or so of coming attractions. It just seemed a little odd that the local commercials (volume MUCH too loud for some) would not be played as folks were waiting for the film to start (ie. before the start time of the film). There was one for a seat belt PSA which showed a mom being greeted by a trooper to say her son was killed; it was a little much for some of the patrons who complained loudly. Interestingly, this PSA, although relevant and a needed reminder, was not played the second day. Popcorn was good, but not hot. Seats were comfy. Overall, it was a nice way to spend a few hours during a downpour. There's a great restaurant, Timber, nearby which we'd highly recommend.

So after ten+ minutes of enjoying the comfortable seats and staring at a blank screen, one of the customers went out into the lobby to get help. After she returned, the sound for the film eventually came on but there were no images and we all sat there in the comfortable seats and waited, but the images never started, so a customer had to go out and ask the manager to fix the projector. After a few more minutes of waiting, the images started to run but the movie was part way along so we had no idea how it started and we couldn't see the images on the screen very well because no one had bothered to turn off the house lights! So, yet again, a paying a customer got up from his comfortable seat and went out to get someone to turn off the house lights! So did the movie rocket staff apologize and restart the movie? No, they just let it run. I think something was also wrong with the projector or film itself because the colors were very dark and it was hard to make out what was going on, not to mention that we were lost because we didn't know how the story began! There was no staff to be found when we were exiting the theater, so I could not have a conversation. There has been no response to my contact with the theater from home. I'd been looking forward to seeing Indiana Jones for months. What a disappointment!

They show a couple of first-run movies per month, a classic film here and there, as well as hosting concerts featuring local and regional performers. You can even rent the outside marquee for a day to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or other special day for a loved one or friend. All in all, The Center Theatre is a great source of entertainment and an active community partner as well. My wife was interested in a limited run documentary film she learned about, and she was able to work with theater management to set up a showing. We became members, which is not an expensive proposition, and enjoy a few benefits like discount tickets and attending their classic movie nights free, and so on. You will find their entertainment schedule on their website, and usually a sheet with the month's schedule on the counter if you prefer something on paper.

But Maine Film Center was listed with showtimes, so I decided to give this new place a try! And I'm so glad I did! The building and amenities are all new and stunning! The theater was small but had very comfortable seats (all with cup holders). The audio and visual quality was excellent too. I bought a small popcorn too and it was the best popcorn I've ever had at a movie theater! The popcorn kernels had great natural flavor and were enhanced only with a sprinkle of salt and the optional butter, which tasted like real melted butter. There was no taste of icky oils and powders like at other movie theaters. However, for those wanting a bolder flavor, there was an array of popcorn seasonings on the counter for customers to add to their popcorn if they so choose. The staff was also pleasant and helpful, helping me with my transactions, pointing me in the direction of restrooms, and answering any of my questions.
