Unlike some other neighborhoods that are either up-and-coming or on-the-way-out or simply trying to…read morehard, The Grove feels like one of those Saint Louis neighborhoods that knows what it wants to be and leans into it with confidence. Manchester Avenue seems to carry the energy, a long run of neon and murals and patios. I saw rainbow flags and dive bars and a few spots that seem just a little scruffy around the edges that keep the place from turning into a theme park version of itself. I have been here on foot and by car. By car, the parking was easy enough as long as you're aware of the hydrants and driveways so you don't block either. On food, the blocks are short and the sidewalks are wide enough that you never feel squeezed. The neighborhood feels expressive and welcoming, like it wants you to see the art, feel the music and take in the color. If I was ever looking to move back into a city, I'd be looking at places in this part of Saint Louis. [Review 370 of 2026 - 494 in Missouri - 25556 overall]

There's a lot of murals and artwork lining the streets. It's colorful and my kind of chaos. Some of my favorite bars are here like Platypus and Good Company. This community is great and if you get a chance to check it out, you definitely should.

Really good if you're into just a smaller feel not a massive bar type setting

I visited HandleBar on May 20th around 10:30 PM, and while the drinks themselves were great, the…read moreservice experience honestly ruined the night for us. One bartender -- a man with a beard and hat was absolutely fantastic: friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. Unfortunately, the experience with the other bartender was the complete opposite. Her behavior toward customers was so noticeably cold and dismissive that it made the entire atmosphere uncomfortable. The contrast in her attitude was honestly shocking. Whenever the other bartender was nearby, she was laughing, smiling, and acting engaged. The second he walked away, she completely changed avoiding eye contact, ignoring customers standing directly in front of her, and repeatedly walking away whenever we tried to order. It genuinely felt like she did not want us there. My group had fully planned on staying longer and ordering at least two more drinks each, but we became so uncomfortable and unwelcome that we decided to leave early instead. Even trying to close our tab took nearly 10 minutes because we could barely get acknowledged. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was upsetting enough that I felt the need to say something. Going out should not leave customers feeling ignored, uncomfortable, and like an inconvenience. It is unfortunate because the drinks and the other bartender were great, but one staff member completely changed the experience for us. At this point, I genuinely would not feel comfortable recommending HandleBar to others based on how unwelcome we were made to feel.
