First time we went the food ans service were great (opening night). We had breakfast and one meal there that were good. The last time we went the service was terrible. The host seated us and we sat there for almost 10 min with no water no menu, no one stopping by the table (meanwhile the host was standing back at the door doing nothing). We strongly recommended this place to several friends and family as we would love for this place to do well... the last two of our friends had similar experience. The last one said the felt invisible or even an annoyance to the staff working that night (pretty hard to do in such a small place). This makes me sad... I hope they can right the ship and get in track. Owners seem like good folks who wanted to do a good job... but work is needed. read more

I like that this is something new and different for the area! The menu is interesting and there is something for everyone! I tried to avocado taco and the chicken tortilla soup. The taco was so fresh and quite large. The chicken tortilla soup was different than any chicken tortilla soup I've had. Super flavorful. The margaritas were sooo good. Service was super quick and knowledgeable. I have a shellfish allergy and the server made sure my items would not be cross contaminated. Has potential but there are many issues they need to fix. The restaurant is new and needs to learn how to operate a business. We arrived slightly early for our reservation and were told people were taking longer to finish eating and to come back. There was no where to wait so we waited in the car. Once we got back we were seated and ordered drinks which took 40 minutes to get. The space is small so there is absolutely no reason to wait 40 min. The drinks arrived when we were almost finished with our food. The menu is short and straightforward. We wanted to try the short rib chile but were told they ran out. How do you run out of a dish on a Saturday night at 7pm? The food we did try was good. We had 6 different tacos. The birria was my favorite. However they come on a wood board and is quite messy. One of the boards was wet like it was just washed. Why not use the taco holders on the board to keep it from being so messy? Overall good ambience. Menu is good but maybe don't run out of food? Met with a buddy for appetizers and drinks on Friday after work. We were seated right away (with a Yelp reservation), service was excellent, and the food and drinks were outstanding. We had their chips & salsa, and calamari. Definitely recommend each. I had El Presidente and El Chapó drinks. Each were exceptionally made by Isaac at the bar, and tasted great! The renovation / remodel the ownership has done made a great space to relax and catch up after a long week at work. Plus, it was an added bonus to see so many friends there! I never leave reviews but our experience was awful. What I tried to order was no longer something the restaurant actually served but it was still listed on menu. The chips and salsa were pure grease and the salsa looked like a weird cream soup. We did not eat. I ordered my second choice option and specifically asked for sauce on the side. Food took a while and there were only 2 other tables. when my meal came out, it was doused with sauce. I asked for another and it came back quick. I ordered shrimp tacos and shrimp was fried which was not in the description. I did not eat them. Even the taco shell was greasy. My husbands dish was mediocre at best. Rice was bland. Our experience started off rocky. Our reservations were for 6 o'clock and the hostess told us it would be about 20 minutes before our table is ready. I know they are new and popular so somewhat understandable but a little frustrating. A second point off would be our waitress. She seemed disinterested in our order and anytime we ordered drinks she would set them all on one corner of the table and walk away without passing them to the respective person. I also had to ask for water 3 times to which she looked irritated at each instance. Our friends ordered chips and salsa and got theirs as an appetizer but our Chicharrón came after our entrées had arrived, and after inquiring about it. The good news is the food blew me away. So flavorful and delicious. Even the rice and beans were well seasoned and tasty. Just a warning everything is a little spicy even the beans. If you're sensitive to spice you might want to stay away from here. I loved it though. Verandah has a very cool aesthetic in a small intimate restaurant. Definitely will be back again. Verandah Morton in the old Unum Fine Wine Whiskey Lounge Dinner at this sprawling downtown Morton restaurant offers the full package: a blockbuster space, buzzy energy, great cocktails, and exceptional Latin American dishes that strike the perfect balance between tradition and creativity. We tried 3 appetizers to start; Ceviche, Shrimp Taquitos and Jalapeño Poppers. Each of these classic plates were delivered with a chic makeover and flavors that shine through. I can't even choose which of the three I loved the most because they were all equally made to perfection. Typically, I wouldn't order more food after all this excitement because there is nothing more uncomfortable than an overly full stomach but I knew I couldn't just stop there. The entree that caught my eye was the Ribeye fajitas. CRAZY flavorful. I am going to leave it there so you can use your imagination on why I would rate this dish a 12 out of 10. A must try. Why stop there? We didn't. One of the chef s made his appearance during our experience to introduce himself. He told us a story about how enthused he was that Morton was named Pumpkin Capital of the World. So, how did he incorporate this piece of our hometown that is so close to many of us? House made Pumpkin Tres Leche Cake. Talk about icing on the cake without having to use icing. The creators of this kitchen are wizards in my mind. Just when you think my story is complete... THE MIXOLOGIST.... YES, IT GET'S BETTER. It was easy to feel pampered as they catered to our taste buds with the most spectacular beverages I have ever tasted AND seen in our area. Each of my beverages looked like they were cut out of the Food Network magazine and the flavor exceeded my expectations. I've been to Verandah twice and experienced both their lunch/brunch and dinner menus. My two experiences were quite polar opposites, but they show some patterns that may be in need of correction. My first visit was a Sunday afternoon lunch with my family visiting in town. We were absolutely blown away. The chips and salsa were expensive but totally worth it; the brunch menu items we had were astoundingly good and spicier than expected in a totally tolerable and suitable way (the chilaquiles for myself, eggs Benedict for my wife); the ambiance and service relaxed (if a tad slow) and pleasant. The highlight might have been the pumpkin tres leches cake. That is one of the best desserts I've had in recent memory, and the use of pumpkin in combination with topping the slice with berries made for a unique blend of sweet and spiced. We left declaring it the new best place in Morton and hastily recommended it to almost everyone we knew. Because of our positive experience, my wife and I decided to go back on a Friday night. We made a reservation to ensure our spot. When we got to the restaurant, admittedly a bit early, we were told we'd have to wait about 10-15 minutes. The lack of space to wait causes a problem in cold weather, as we had to walk back to our car to wait. Thankfully, we only had to do that dance once and got seated about five minutes after our scheduled time, which I think is totally acceptable in peak hours, especially for a newer place. Our service that night was as slow as it was the first time, but it felt completely different: because of the packed dining area, the atmosphere felt rushed and hurried, as did all the wait staff we encountered, and we noticed the slowness of the service for the first time because of this hurried vibe. The food was just as good (quesabirria tacos were astounding if quite messy), and our first time with the cocktail menu was stupendous despite some shortages on ingredients and spirits, but we left underwhelmed because of how rushed and anxious the place felt. I had a lot of sympathy for our waitress who seemed pretty overwhelmed but kept herself composed despite the three trips that it took for me to get my second drink order in because ingredients were out of stock. I think Verandah quite possibly has the best food in Morton and possibly on the east bank of the Illinois river in the Peoria area. It has a small but fully diverse menu of Latin American food that really impresses both at lunch and dinner. However, I'm hesitant to recommend it because of the service and the atmosphere that comes with it on a busy night. The hangup is not the front of house but seems to be in the kitchen, and when that's the case it trickles down to the wait staff and detracts from the experience. If you're going for lunch or brunch, it's a no-brainer; for dinner, especially on a weekend, put your expectations in check. We might revisit in the evening in a few months to see if things have improved, but for now it's strictly a lunch-only place for us. read more

I was excited to try a Latin American restaurant, and wanted to see how it would compare to Mexican and Chilean cuisine I have tried before in the past. The interior was neat and tidy. Surprisingly, upon entering, I was asked if I had a reservation and they seemed concerned that I did not. Seeing that there were only 2 tables being served and it was barely after 4 p.m., I was a bit taken back that they had to check their availability. Hostess seemed inexperienced and attempted to seat us at the bar which we respectfully declined. I was later assured there was room for us and by the time we were finished, the restaurant was starting to pile up. Full disclosure, the prices are ridiculously high for the quality of food and the small portions of food you get. We were willing to look past this as long as the food was good. However, the customer service, food delivery, and the food quality did not live up to its hype. Birria soup was greasy and flavorless. The ribeye taco and the carnitas taco lacked imagination, were rather plain, and did not come with rice or beans despite an expensive a la carte price. Their tomatillo sauce was not good. My coworker ordered shrimp taquitos and practically choked on the shrimp tails that were left on within the taco. An odd choice for shrimp tacos and she was not pleased. When she advised our waitress that this might not be a good appetizer for children, our waitress seemed indifferent. Other customers seemed to enjoy the clean, laid-back modern atmosphere as well as the full bar. But based off the prices and the food, there are so many better restaurants that serve similar food in the area. read more

They weren't busy at all so there was no reason for it to be that bad. They had more then enough servers there. It took forty five minutes to get our beverages. They didn't have all the correct drink ingredients for a cocktail, so they just left half of them out (vs telling me they could not make it as described.) The waitress still charged me for the inedible ceviche until I asked a manager to remove it from the bill. I may give them another try after have a chance to work some of the kinks out since it is a newer business. I hope they can improve and do well because Morton needs more good restaurants! read more

Unfortunately I was so disappointed. Very expensive for mediocre food. Also very expensive for chips and salsa (not free) and the salsa isn't the kind America has become accustomed to. For 3 small tacos, one small order of chips and salsa and 2 waters was over $50.00. Also you can hear bathroom noice all throughout the restaurant. Went on a Saturday evening, no need to make a reservation at 6:30. Maybe this is more of a go get a drink kinda of place. And get ready to not be in a hurry bc the staff is not in a rush to serve you either. We were there an hour before our appetizer came out to us. Not your traditional chips and salsa either, the chips the chips tasted good but should have been served warm and they were extremely greasy. The salsa was a purée, it was ok. For dinner I ordered the tomato fettuccine with shrimp, it came out cold as well and the noodles were very undercooked. The shrimp was delicious. My husband ordered fajitas with shrimp, definitely not enough food for a grown man with a high appetite. 6 little shrimp a couple corn tortillas a couple scoops of white rice and sour cream and tiny guacamole, slaw, pico.
