THE BOSS on Broadway was a once in a lifetime experience and we loved it. Happened to be in NYC walking around Broadway and saw the theater that Bruce Springsteen was doin his residency. So I thought let's try and see if any tickets were available cause all shows had been sold out for ages. I walked into the box office around 2 in the afternoon and only 1 couple were ahead of me in line. The ticket lady indicated to them that a pair of tickets were left for that nights event. Now I'm pissed cause I know they will snap them up. But then he started complaining $600 per ticket was too high and I'm like WTF I'm gonna be able to score. I had my poker face on and when they left I basically said I'll take both. Out comes my AMEX card and boom we're going to THE BOSS! Now these were amazing seats ! First Row Box Seats and so these are angled seats located on the side of mezzanine level which was private perspective. THE BOSS arrives on stage and gives his autobiographical journey of his life and music travels through time. Unfortunately Patti his wife was ill and didn't attend that night. However it was a phenomenal experience and seeing SPRINGSTEEN striped down and raw playin his acoustic guitar is at the pinnacle my musical mountain of experiences in my life. Danny Federici gave my dad our first tickets for free. 11.1.78 Darkness Opener 2nd Leg. I've been a deeply devoted fan since with stories and meets and more. Worked at the Kharagushian Mill in Freehold a time which he speaks about when he does speak to us from stages anymore - where his father worked, across the street from where the Castilles were born. I'm not alone amongst many Shore people that can recite long gone places and long faded faces. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. That's the legend. Not the merch and the celebrity glitz. Names like Bubbles Pachonic, Club Spanky, that shut down plant in Youngstown and so much more that....meant something. Life wasn't about merch and who was rich enough to get in; it was about salvation, redemption, mercy, brother and sisterhood and about who was never too poor to walk into an E Street Band Show. That was rock and roll. not the gilded future Jon built. How many ways can you resell the past before you run out of a now that's meaningful? This Broadway show was purportedly born simply. He'd written of or was finishing his biography cleverly titled "Born to Run" (which is what he should be doing - "be a author - get a little something for yourself") when he played a private show for Obama with bits from his bio and sone songs. Then we paid the intimacy at first just for a President. And that's what started here on Broadway - pricing out the people that he wrote about and wrote for and it has only gotten worse. I saw him twice on Broadway in the Tom Joad-priced $70 seats as an act of loyalty but he still moved me, including to tears a time or two because there's more to our history-Highway, as star and true fans than all the Johnny Come Lately's with their snide comments and fat wallets will ever know. The only other time I'd cried was for Danny during Backstreets in Tampa day after his Red Bank funeral. I'll go to my grave a fan but these shadows you see now in these later years of Broadway and this 2023 tour are of a man, a force that once stood for something and never knelt. Don't believe his self effacing nonsense in the Broadway show that it was just a magic trick and fraud back then. And ignore the comic blaspheming he allows as Steve mock strangles him on the current tour. It breaks my heart- what's left of it. There was Justice back then in just us. Man and band and fans and a musical unity that meant something. A lot more than $800 or even $5000. Broadway was the beginning surrender to the new myth he was a myth. He wasn't. We aren't either. So let me start off with a confession: I have never been to a Bruce Springsteen concert and I am not a diehard fan; however, I've always like all his music that I hear on the radio. Funny, when he first got on stage, his fans were chanting "Bruuuucccee!!!"....I actually thought they were boooo'ing him! hahaha Like I said, not a diehard fan...but after seeing his show, I have been converted!! This was truly a special show!! Tickets are hard to come by and extremely expensive but I entered a lottery and I actually WON!! And by winning, I mean I get the chance to purchase the lottery ticket for $75 plus Ticketmaster fees; total ticket price came out to $82 for rear mezz seats. At first, I thought they were bad seats but when I got there, I realized that they were fantastic seats! We couldn't have been more than 75 ft away from the stage! Fantastic view! My only complaint is with the seats in mezz, which were so small and had absolutely no leg room. Ok, onto the show! The show was AMAZING!! (2 hrs 20 min; no intermission). It was NOT a concert, like I expected. A concert alone would have been awesome enough! The music was outstanding - at 68 yrs old, he's still got "it"!! (with special guest performance by his wife, Patti!). As it turns out, the show mostly included Bruce's personal and intimate stories about his life, which were so well written and thoughtful. I had no idea the show would be that "deep". I enjoyed all his stories more than the music! Imagine THAT! Thanks to Bruce for reminding us that 1+1=3!! Excellent! Hands down, I was very impressed! I don't even think much (good or bad) about Springsteen, but he is my husband's favorite, so we spring for 11th row to see him. ($$Yikes!!) I will say, I came out a true fan of the man. He is an EXCELLENT storyteller. He talks about why he came to write each song ...with COMPLETE HONESTY. Some of his explanations were comical, which made you feel like more of a friend divulging a secret that he wouldn't tell the general public. Very informative and enjoyable night! Despite the EXTREMELY small seats AND cost, our seat selection was perfect (any more close and I am afraid that we would have been looking up too much) and we were close enough to see all his facial expressions without aid of any type. I will say that if you have sensitive ears, bring a pair of earplugs - it got VERY loud during a couple of the songs where I had to actually cover my ears. You will cry and you will sing. If you are a child of the 70s & 80s and/or lived in the North East, you will be familiar with the "Boss". He tells an emotionally charged story of his early life interjecting his songs for 2 hours. Of course Born to Run, but also My Home Town (which always makes me cry), Dancing in the Dark, Thunder Road, and he starts with Growing Up. Most touching was when he talks about his dad (who has passed away and who he did not get along with) showing up unannounced after a 500 mile drive just before Bruce is about to have his first child. He says to Bruce "I haven't been good to you" "but You've been good to me". He was trying to tell his son not to make the mistakes he made. He also talks about the "Big Man", Clarence Clemons, who also passed away years ago. He literally and figuratively was a big part of the E Street Band where be played saxophone. We all remember the Big Man. There is no understudy for the Boss and he will not be doing this for ever. After markets tickets cost $1,200 to $3,000, (face value of $200-850) If you can afford it, go see it. Money comes and goes. The Boss does not. read more

I like Bruce but I'm definitely not a fanatic and I feel like this show was really made for the fanatics. The show is half scripted story telling that comes off a bit like a book recital and half stripped down concert. The first half of the show was heavier on story telling and that dragged for me. The second half was heavier on the songs and that was where the thing got its wind. I think the one man part was where this experience seperates the Bruce fanatics from the casual fans. I just didn't find Bruce to be that good a story teller, or the stories that he was telling that coherent or compelling. It's no surprise, but he just isn't the story teller that a master like Mike Daisey is. And for me, I just don't care that much about the story that he's telling. The songs were great, though all of them truncated versions. The highlight for me was the stripped down bluesy version of Born in the USA which really highlighted the protest element of it. The one weird thing though is that I found the sound pretty bad, especially on the more rocking numbers. It was surprisingly loud and the amplification left it distorted from my balcony seats. For the Bruce fanatic though, this show was clearly amazing. The woman next to me was on her fourth performance and she'd paid to sit in the front row. She'd clearly read his book as well and she was in bliss. Overall, an enjoyable night for sure, but not earth shattering for me. read more

First, I am a diehard Springsteen fan. I was very disappointed when he got on stage and said that he had never worked 5 days a week until now and he hates it. That made me feel like he didn't want to be there and play for me and I pod $850 for my ticket. I realize he had been doing this almost a year now, but he brought that on himself playing the same show over and and over again. That's like the "factory" work of the music industry. Anyway - I laughed, I cried, I cheered, I sighed. I had a world of emotions going through me there. I am so glad I got to go... but it all felt too scripted to me. I would never go see it again. But I'm glad I went to see this more intimate side of Bruce. read more

This show may be the first to be Tony nominated for both "Best Play" and "Best Musical". It's certainly both and so much more. Springsteen - dialog and song - takes you on a exhilarating emotional lifelong journey. From earliest childhood hometown memories. Detailed and most vivid one can visualize the intimate stories of mother, father and sister. Of leaving Jersey young and venturing across America. Love stories, war stories (some literal), and the "Long Walk Home". Finally a return back to his hometown all these years later. And in between all this the magical story of the E-Street Band where "1 + 1 = 3". The Walter Kerr Theater is perfect for this performance. With 950 seats the place is beyond intimate. The acoustics beyond perfect. Every word spoken or sung is crystal clear. A very special evening from a very special performer.... read more

This is NOT a concert--this is a one-man show from a performer that we all think we know, but we really don't. So emotional, so intimate. His love for his mother and country were evident. His performance of "Born in the USA" was so raw and intense. Not a bad seat in the house, although the actual seats were made for 12 year-olds (small). The crowd rightfully pounced on people trying to sing along--which was impossible because his renditions of his songs were completely different. Sit back, put your phone away, and bask in the glow of the greatest poet and storyteller of our time. Worth. Every. Penny. And I'm not a huge fan either--but bought his book the day after the show. This show was,,,,, awesome! I am a big fan, so my review is a bit bias. But honestly, I wasn't expecting much. I figured it be same old Bruce with just a guitar and belting out some old favorite hits. It wasn't. This was a real play/musical. Bruce actually acted. The show is scripted and goes through the life of Bruce Springsteen, from cradle to,,, well,,, now. His stories were scripted and narrated by him. He throws in a lot of humor through selective timing. The audience laughed a lot. His comedic timing was on,,, his acting ability was not. But that's what made it better. He was so authentic and you could see the poor rock star struggling through some of his lines, which only added to his authenticity and honest story telling. And, it was moving. Towards the end, Bruce explained his feelings of aging and the losses of close ones that have brought intimacy into his life. You felt like you were having coffee in a living room setting with the guy. His presentation was so emotional that some of the audience around me flowed with tears. It was moving to see such a remarkable legend humble himself to the public and describe his true honest self, the reason for his success, and the portrait of those around him who colored his landscape through all the decades. Not to get religious, and he self-proclaims not to be a true practicing faithful follower, but he ended the show's dialogue with the "Our Father" to explain a moving self moment of driving through the neighborhood where he was raised just recently. He stopped at night and got out of his car to look over the area he frequented as a child and reflected over the people that touched his life. When he looked down the street, the saw the steeple of the Catholic Church he would attend with his family. He said the only prayer that stuck in his Christian repertoire, the "Our Father ". It was moving. The only bad part of the show is that it is two and half hours long with no intermission. It gets tough to hold those beers in for that long. Also, the theatre is small and so are the seats. You can to move at all! Your body is stuck in that position for 2 1/2 hours. I'm getting old and my circulation can't handle that. But Bruce is a class act. He put on a true Broadway show. This should win awards. He audience was mesmerized and for the price of the ticket, it was worth every penny. It's not often at all, that in our lifetime, a legend will sit with you, in your living room, and tell you his true story. Bruce does. read more

I've been a Springsteen fan for years. Albums, book, concerts and so on. My wife dislikes him and calls him talentless. I loved the show, and in a surprise so did she! Now she feels like Springsteen isn't so bad after all. The folk versions of his songs are intriguing and put a real different spin on them. Nothing in the play that wasn't in his book, but hearing it all live was very enjoyable. Funny and sad and really feel like you got a look at a poets soul. As for the theater itself, it is old but very nice and the cheap balcony seats we had were good as well. Not a lot of room but not as bad as an airline seat. And the view was clear and close. We could clearly hear Bruce talking even off mike as he wanders around the stage at times. Of course drinks and so forth are expensive as all broadway events are. Overall an extremely enjoyable night. read more
