I ended up buying a tree for $160 compared to $2900 at moon valley, just a little smaller. Only issue, I put it on hold for my landscaper who doesn't speak English well. When he arrived no one could find the tree, I had to drive over, when I got there they found it right away. Other than this, great experience.

There is always so much to see here and during December, the feel of the holidays/season is in full display. If you need a table arrangement made for you, there's a person (I swear who looked a little like Santa Claus--was that a dream?) who was busy making them. The Christmas cacti were so beautiful. I wanted to buy one since my really old one at home decided not to bloom this year! If you need Christmas or holiday spirit and live close by, you should visit! It's a beautiful place.

I usually can find something here I haven't seen at the other nurseries that week. This week I snagged some guara, hummingbird bush, and a gorgeous pink trumpet vine that's actually not toxic to pets (as most trumpet vines are). The staff all seem very knowledgeable and are really helpful. There are two older gentlemen that walk around and are always especially kind and helpful. There are some chickens clucking about and if you go in the indoor plant area you can meet parrots Jack and Diane who are happy to have a chat with you. There's also a huge selection of pottery.

We have been going to Whitfill for over 20 years now! What started out as Christmas tree shopping…read morewhen our boys were little has now turned into a yearly tradition that we hope one day they will continue with their own families. Not only do we go to them during the holidays but rely on them throughout the year when we need additional plants and trees for our backyard. We first started using Whitfill back in the early 2000's when they were on 40th street south of Roeser. We literally lived across the street from their nursery and when they moved to their current spot on Southern we followed! We have decades of photos with our boys standing next to the tree they choose for Christmas and the tradition continues now with our Sphynx cats! They used to have a peacock walking around but unfortunately he is no longer there. They are pet friendly and we are comfortable taking our cats there in the stroller. Not only are their prices and tree selections the best in town but their customer service and knowledge of anything tree related is vast! They know what they are doing and don't try to upsell or get you to buy unnecessary items. They are the real deal!

I shouldn't need to walk all the way back up front to ask -- and I've been giving the wrong information before anyhow. Its important to know what kind of plant you're buying for multiple reasons. The other Whitfill location (off Guadalupe and Cooper) doesn't have this issue. Overall I think the plants are pretty healthy but after having an issue with lack of labeling (on both the kind of plant and pricing), having been given the wrong plant info on a plant, and after having asked if they had Pink Fairy Duster and being sent off in a direction to wander and never find it on my own, I'm really over this location.

I found the layout of the whole nursery very confusing and disorganized. I looked around a bit, but found a lot of the fruit trees weren't looking their best with a few half dead ones or odd shaped ones. I was looking for a desert milkweed and they had one hidden behind some other stuff. It was a single sprig hanging out of a pot. I gave up and left to continue my journey elsewhere.

In the greater Phoenix metro, many nurseries are no longer independent operators, but North Scottsdale Nursery and Cactus remains an old-school place. You'll see giant saguaros for sale along with rows of ocotillo which they keep planted in the ground and not bare root (and probably dead), like you'll find at Home Depot and Lowe's. If you buy one here you can at least tell if it is alive and has leaves or not -- although for a plant that looks hardy, ocotillos are notoriously hard to transplant and at least 2/3 of them do not survive. You have to plant them then wait a year and try again until you get lucky or run out of patience. They will optionally deliver and put your plants in the ground for you for a flat rate of $200 if you are within delivery range.
