The main guy in the kichen - my man Carlos!! - has so much charisma. Before I even had time to fully look at the menu, he handed me a small sample of their soup of the day. It was warm, flavorful, and honestly so delicious that I was instantly sold! I am not even vegan, but the food completely won me over. Everything tasted fresh, nourishing, and thoughtfully made. I ordered more than I planned to, and I have to admit something funny. I do not have a single picture of what I ate or drank because I literally gulped it down so fast. It was that good. The only photo I managed to take was of the enchiladas, the menu, and of course; Carlos! Everything else disappeared before I even thought about my phone. They also made me a freshly squeezed orange juice, and I watched them use actual oranges right there. No fake juice, no concentrate, just real oranges being squeezed. It tasted fresh and clean. On top of all that, the prices are very reasonable. It feels good to eat something that is both healthy and affordable. The store side is just as charming, with shelves full of natural supplements, spices, snacks, drinks, and little treasures you did not know you needed. Everyone there was so kind, welcoming, and genuinely happy to have customers walk through the door. It ended up being such a fun and unexpected experience for me. I walked in out of curiosity and left with a full stomach and a big smile. Whether you are vegan, vegetarian, or none of the above, I truly recommend stopping by and supporting this spot. The store is bigger than the ones I had visited before and offers refillable stations for soaps, shampoos, spices, grains, powder coffees, teas, some pastas! It is amazing how many items you find at Verde! They also have their own Kombucha station which makes fresh kombucha for you right then and there! They can also ground coffee beans for you, they also sell eggs!! I really loved Pamela's energy! You can tell how passionate she is about her store and bringing the concept to our community! I am definitely sold on the idea/concept and had to go home with some mushroom coffee and chai tea latte that I cannot wait to try! That is where everything starts to fall apart. I went back Monday night, my second visit since that brutal local newspaper article. I had just finished a workout and wanted to grab a steak. Quick in and out. That was the plan. Instead, I walked up to the meat department and just stopped. It was rough. Not a little messy. I am talking straight up dirty, disorganized, and honestly kind of gross. Definitely not what you expect when you are about to buy something you plan to eat. What really gets me is this. One of the employees there also works at another nearby supermarket that is known for having high standards. So she knows what right looks like. This is not a training issue. It is a nobody is checking, nobody cares situation. And it shows. The rest of the store felt the same way. Dingy, a little grimy, just not taken care of. The nice layout cannot save it when everything else feels off. I ended up walking out. No steak, no patience left. It is frustrating because this place has potential. I think it was primarily because this…read morestore had been hyped up so much by so many people, especially those who'd lived in California and previously shopped at TJ's there and were elated when their stores finally started opening in the Miami area. A few weeks before I came here, one of our neighbors saw us carrying Publix bags and admonished us, telling us we'd save a lot by going to TJ's instead. All that in mind, I came to Trader Joe's fully expecting a mind-blowing adventure in grocery shopping where I'd find amazing foods along with typical grocery store items, all at rock bottom prices. That day I left disappointed and empty handed. I selected a few things, but ended up putting them back as I found that TJ's didn't have many of the standard grocery staples I was looking for on that day, and several items were more expensive than Publix. I'd actually written a review draft, giving this Trader Joe's 3 stars at most after that visit. Fast forward several weeks and I was looking for something unique to make for dinner and I did a search for creative ideas from Trader Joe's. They had several suggestions for buying multiple items at this store and combining them (in some cases using additional ingredients from Publix as well) for a relatively inexpensive and fast meal so I came, found everything I needed and made 2 dinners for two for about $15 each. The first was Birria tacos which hubby is a fan of each time we go to Earls. The second was chicken mole which I often order at Bakan or Koko, both with Mexican rice. Both meals were simple to prepare, turned out really well and were inexpensive to make. If you come here to TJ's looking for lots of standard grocery store staples and basic ingredients, you may be disappointed - and with many things it makes sense to comparison shop as Trader Joes' isn't always the cheapest on price - but for specialty items, frozen prepared foods and meal planning, I found it to be a really good option. I'll be looking for more recipe ideas and return for sure!
