But let's go in order. I went in for a base plus foils, which on her website says it's 10 foils. I go in, we have a chat about my regrowth and that it was quite a bit , so we agreed the following time I'b book a partial highlight - no changes to the current service. When she's doing my hair I see she's putting lot more than 10 foils , and it's my fault I didn't question her then. Anyways, as she was doing the foils I showed her my ends and asked what she thought, since I was thinking they were bad and should probably trim them. She agreed that it needed to be done and added that she alwyas trims the ends when bleaching hair. Alright, so she does the trimming and styles my hair. I get up to get my wallet and she tells me she only accepts Venmo or Zelle, I asked for the total and she said: 320$. I was shocked and asked why, she proceeded to explain she added extra foils and that the ends trimming was another 120$! I am completely astonished. I say seriously end trimming is $120?! You didn't think to tell me this? Who would want to pay this much for ends trimming? It's outrageous. She tried to justify saying it's "salon policy" and all the stylists charge a full haircut when they trim ends, turns out it's not even true because there is no salon policy and all the stylists choose to do what they want once they rent their chair. Later I checked her site and saw that she chose to charge me the long hair cut (listed $100+), the most expensive in her list , to do the ends. [[HIGHLIGHT]]She never once apologized or showed an ounce of interest in the difficult spot she put me in by more than doubling what I expected to pay and not allowing me to put it on a credit card.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]She has 0 customer service skills and hell, even basic human skills, no empathy whatsoever.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The job done to my hair is not remotely worth 320$, it's average at best. If you still decide to book with her, make sure to ask every single cost for everything. Even to say hi there might be a charge. I knew I was going to pay something extra to trim the ends but never in my wildest dreams I'd thought I'd be over a $100 and it's very dishonest not to disclose it ahead of time. Also, she took the initiative to add more foils and didn't say it. Still I'm stuck with the charge. I've been a a cosmetologist in LA for two decades, and today Silvia gave me a color service that was unmatched, and I've seen quite a few stylists. I arrived to her with what would be a frustrating correction for most (low lights on previously bleached, compromised hair has turned brassy and brittle from another salon). Without judgement or confusion, Silvia knew exactly what to do and never reprimanded me about my over-processed hair. She simply fixed it and gave me exactly the color I've been craving but failed to achieve for years. I struggled with whether or not I should even post this review. Even though I do not completely hate it, it is NOT WHAT I ASKED FOR. I figured I would post and exclude the stylist's name for the sake of fairness.. I for one will not be going back to spruce and cedar I have a friend who works in this salon as a stylist. I showed her what I wanted and she referred me to a coworker of hers at S&C she felt would be a good fit to give me the color that I wanted. Both her and the stylist that worked on me forewarned me that the look that I wanted to achieve would take two sessions as my natural hair is dark and won't take to the bleaching.. I thought this was weird because 1. at this point my hair was virgin, I haven't dyed it in years and 2. years prior when I got my hair colored and bleached it NEVER was an issue for it to get as light as I wanted (this time being no different) in one take. But whatever I trusted my friend and figured she wouldnt be suggesting someone she didnt think could help me first session was in june, I sat under foils with little to no heat applied while I had bleach in my hair, also weird as prior experiences usually had me under heat to my stylist surprise my hair lightened... she toned it (a dark caramel/orange color I wasnt too thrilled with - but again my friend's words rang in my head "trust the process" and "it will take two visits" ) I left with my second session booked and a mild dislike of my hair with the EXPECTATION THAT WHEN I CAME BACK FOR MY SECOND APT. I WOULD LEAVE WITH THE COLOR I WANTED color aside, I didn't even feel like the stylist matched the painting style as the model picture I had given them days before we met the first time last sunday was my second apt. I told them I was fine with cutting length of my hair (again had no issue as I figured even with it being shorter the length i wanted it wouldn't hinder the color I wanted to achieve) the bleach process the first time significantly damaged my hair (not to say my hair was the healthiest, as I have pretty wavy/curly hair so to tame and manage I am a chronic straightener, but that coupled with the bleach wrecked my ends and a significant cut was definitely needed) we discussed options, i told the stylist about the color i then wanted and we began. Funny enough they even remarked that my hair seemed to lighten from our last session, claiming the sun must have lightened it and this is a good sign as i would be able to get the color i wanted. The stylist then free painted me with bleach and left me to sit (again with no heat) to see if the color lifted. Now it's important to note my hair pretty much is the same color of the bleach now, I can see this and this gives me hope that it is now bright enough to tone it the color I wanted, the color in the picture. I dont know what it was but I had this feeling that once the stylist started to tone, they put a warmer color in my hair, when they knew I wanted something cooler After the shampoo, they guided me back to the chair. Immediately i see the color wasnt much of a difference than what i walked in with, granted it was wet but it still wasn't as blonde as i wanted and the stylist knew this as their response was "it's still wet silly" So they start to dry and style my hair and every so often i look up to see my hair is in-fact not what i wanted. And now Im sitting there a bit frustrated. And this is coming off a bit obvious as the stylist is making comments like "im excited to see the color" "Your ends are pretty close to the picture you showed me" and making excuses like medications (although im only taking birth control and have never had issue going light while taking it) can affect the way your hair takes to color. So obviously a cop out since I wasnt happy, then other stylists are chiming in like "oh how pretty, stylist* looks good" i then make a comment that I wished it were lighter their response was "not sure how much lighter I can get you without frying your ends" So when the stylist is finally finished and says, "looks just like the picture" and I reply "it doesn't though" they take it upon themselves to tell me they think it's best if we part ways - well no shit. I left your chair not once but TWICE unhappy. Why would I want to come back to you? The stylist then makes a condescending remark by saying "maybe *your friend that works here* can color your hair next time" and they wished me luck on my endeavors on achieving the blonde i wanted Whatever fine. At least they were nice enough not to charge me the price of the color and just the cut - which i still tipped 25% I would give one star, but I at least left with something manageable. I feel like these pictures say it all but Lenna Kelly is INCREDIBLE and I can't recommend her enough. I'm new to LA and had a pretty awful experience with another stylist not associated with this salon (I asked for some natural highlights and somehow ended up completely orange and streaky and the stylist who did it didn't seem to think that was an issue...). I reached out to several stylists all over LA who do color corrections and Lenna was the only one who voiced concern about the integrity of my hair and she also just was really honest about the options that I had to fix it. I was so happy to find someone who did not over promise and kept things real. At the salon, Lenna took time to talk with me about my current color (including figuring out the process the last stylist went through) and what I was hoping for. We went through a bunch of photos of what I'd originally asked for and Lena thoroughly explained what to expect and all of my options. I was feeling pretty terrified after my last color experience so I really appreciated her thoroughness and patience in talking with me. Lenna was able to take me from pretty horrific orange hair to the most perfect multidimensional blonde and I still can't believe that this is my hair! I'm so glad to have found a stylist who I trust and is so incredibly skilled at what she does. Lenna is also so sweet and funny and I felt so comfortable spending a few hours in her chair. The other stylists at Spruce and Cedar were also so friendly and welcoming! It's been a while since I've been to Spruce and Cedar Salon. Life got busy and then the lockdown happened. I thought the salon was closed, but happily discovered that they were still open. I was happier that they had a curl specialist, Robyn Friend. Before I share my experience, which was phenomenal, I wanted to share my journey. For the longest time, I had long hair. With that came many stylists that I've enjoyed over the years, and have respect for. However, I struggled to try to express myself in the physical essence. Spiritually, I know who I am. I identify as queer, edgy, gothic, rocker punk type, and I always had a feminine and masculine essence to me throughout my life. But my hair never really reflected who I was. And the stylists beforehand were great, but they could only do what I communicated. I didn't know how to express what I wanted until I met Robyn and I was able to put it into words. I wanted an edgy, punk-rock androgynous curly cut. I didn't have an exact picture, but that is what I wanted the results to be. Robyn understood me as she took her time consulting with me, got to know who I was, and what I wanted with my hair. She got to work and started to create magic. By the time she was done, I was in happy tears. Robyn gave me the exact curly cut that I've been searching for my whole life. It was a cut that I never had but always wanted to reflect who I truly was. The cut was unique, had a lot of edgy layers, giving it a rock/androgynous vibe, and told a story of who I was.
