Pretty sure the fish took a vacation. Or maybe they just hate us. Getting to the other side of the reservoir felt like a side quest in an off-brand video game -- bumpy roads, no idea how far we were actually going, but somehow it took forever. Definitely earned our snacks that day. We were off-grid RVing and used solar -- plenty of sunshine (yay Colorado!), and the panels worked great. Bathrooms were drop toilets (two in our loop), surprisingly clean for what they are -- rustic but not revolting. We drove to the shower house and THANK GOODNESS we had cash because it was $1 for 4 minutes, and you bet we were in there with a full stack of quarters like it was 1995 at the arcade. Clean showers. Flush toilets. Glorious. Some quirks: - Our fire ring looked like it hosted a frat party the night before. Lots of ash, trash, and mystery items. - Patrol truck drove by once at 8:30pm and then vanished into the night like a park ranger ninja. - Two entire families camped in the parking lot overnight. With kids. Just chilling. Not in sites. Just... existing there. We're heading back soon but staying on the marina side, because we enjoy actual campsites and the illusion of order. ‍ Overall: beautiful location, lots of sun, potential for fish (maybe), and absolutely bring quarters if you enjoy hygiene.

We pulled off to see if there was a good view of the valley below from the gazebo. Reality is, it's a bit hindered by the hill and vegetation below, so the pull off down the hill is still the best spot for photo ops (see photo). We did get to use the restrooms...they were very stinky! Yes, it is August, and yes they are essentially brick and mortar porta-potties...however, they were obviously not freshly cleaned. Floor was not mopped, no attempt was made to freshen them up for travellers. I would have let it go, was it not for the fact that 2 rangers were sitting around in the gift shop with little to nothing do. So my question is: if you have TWO employees not currently engaged in other activities, what's stopping one of them from grabbing a mop bucket, tossing some PineSol in it and freshening up the restroom? Food for thought... They do have feeders right by the gift shop windows where you can enjoy hummingbirds up-close and personal :) That was a nice perk! They also have several plaques explaining the history as well as the fauna of the area. They also have trails leaving directly the parking lot that seem interesting to scout in the future.

Though after much consideration, I suppose I might as well be the one to share it with all my Yelp friends! Star #1: It is a first come, first serve, FREE campground. There is a paid campground nearby as well, so don't fret if you arrive and there are no sites available. However, it is such a hidden gem that I have yet to have the need for that. Star #2: Many of the sites are adjacent small streams, so you'll get to fall asleep to the sounds of babbling brooks! There are a few that are more open and offer lots of space for activities and larger groups too - bags anyone?! We tend to prefer the ones that are tucked up against the mountain. Star #3: The variety of sites makes it a great place for any type of camping: tents, camper, car, etc! Though, I will say, an RV might be pushing it... Star #4: At approximately and hour and a half from Denver, this campground is ideal for those looking for a close and quick mountain getaway without committing to hours in the car. Star #5: If you are like many campers and want to get some shooting in while you embrace your inner woods-person. Sugarloaf has got you covered! There is a wide open area right when you turn up the main road that is prepped for all your shooting needs. So go ahead and fire off a few rounds. Just don't forget: safety first! After camping a handful of places in Colorado Sugarloaf Campground has been on of my favorites and on of the only ones I have been back to multiples times!

Rich Creek Trail is a moderate hike in the Buffalo Peak Wilderness near the town of Fairplay. This…read moreparticular trail is on the outskirts of the Weston Pass Campground, with the small trailhead parking lot just prior. A fairly simple out and back trail it may be, however the majority of the trail sits alongside Rich Creek. So for the duration of the hike you hear the wonderful sounds of the rushing creek. Absolutely splendid! With all the rain we've gotten this season, it's no surprise that nature is putting on a show earlier than normal. The abundant evergreens are looking more like summer than mid spring. The vibrant trees definitely added an extra pop of color during the hike and I certainly wasn't complaining. The trail is well marked, and at one point you will have to cross the creek. Be prepared to add some extra wood to the makeshift bridge, because it was on its last leg as I crossed. Tread lightly. I did see some stunning bluebirds during my time out here. Otherwise no major wildlife to be found. 5.5 miles roundtrip. 1,161 ft. elevation gain. 2.5 hours total. For a Memorial Day Weekend hike, I was very content with this trail. I bet this trail is even more beautiful in the Fall. Saw about 9 or 10 people the whole time. Parking lot has 7-8 spots, so if you're going on a Summer weekend it might fill up. Hiking season has begun!

Last minute we were able to find a site here. Everyone was super nice and friendly. The sites are smallish but not horrible. I like that they are all setup among the trees so it feels more like a park and not a parking lot. There is a huge field right next to the rv area where we could take our dogs for a walk. It's close enough to all the attractions but also far enough away to avoid the crowds. I would definitely stay here again.

I was in the mood for a moderate hike that…read moreshowed off all the Aspen foliage as we put September behind us and this trail was everything I set out for it to be and more. Once you make that left from US-64 you have about a 3 mile drive up a dirt road and from there you will see the parking lot to the right. The trailhead is easily marked making it almost impossible to miss (#664). The parking lot is fairly small and heavily trafficked so I'd recommend arriving earlier the better. 5 miles down and back. The first mile is mainly switchbacks but smoothes out the remainder of the hike. The aspens showed off their vibrant yellow colors which made the hike that much more enjoyable. The weather can change drastically especially when you make it to the top. It was raining and pretty windy when i got up there so a jacket is highly recommended. As well as good hiking boots as you experience different types of terrain, particularly at the top where it's mainly rocks. There are bathrooms at the trailhead parking lot which is extremely convenient. Especially for my hour drive trek back home to Colorado Springs. Give this hike a go!
