Up until this summer the only problems I had with the Spudnut Shop was that seating was often insufficient for the lunch rush, and they often ran out of pastries in the afternoon. Then we went in for a burger on a Saturday afternoon around 2pm (something we'd done before, no problem) and were told that the grill was shut down - two hours before their closing time. So it seemed that sufficient seating was often unavailable during their busy hours, and food was unavailable when they were not so busy. This was annoying enough, but when I inquired about the situation via email and the shop's website, both attempts at contact went totally ignored. Life is too short, and options too varied to deal with a place that makes receiving service such an iffy proposition, and then doesn't have the decency to respond to customer concerns. read more

Call me a donut snob, but I really had high hopes for these guys. Especially after hearing so many good things. Our donuts were super dry, flat, and just not anywhere near what a good donut should taste like. Super disappointing. read more

I have lived in the T-C off and on since I was a kid. When not living in the T-C I have lived all over the country and have yet to eat a doughnut that is even close to a spudnut. My father-in-law used to run one of the original Spudnuts franchises back in the 1950s. He waxed poetic about how good they were, so his daughter and I both have been trying to visit it for a number of years. Coming from Portland, Oregon, it is a dedicated trip. The first trip, I found out that they are not open on Sunday. What kind of doughnut shop isn't open on Sunday? Most doughnut shops I see choose to open on Sunday to serve the church crowd. Disappointed, I resolved to come back another time. The second trip was on a Saturday a year later; however, they were sold out. What kind of doughnut shop runs out of doughnuts? If they were new, I could understand it, but not at any place that has any history. Any self-respecting doughnutmonger should have enough product to last the day. The third time was a year later, on a Saturday, at 10:00 AM. It is a little hole-in-the-wall place at a sort of run-down shopping mall. Not the end of the world, as I have eaten at lots of places that looked sketchy at first. The place was standing-room only, with a line, and a local policeman, so I figured there must be some truth to the stories I had heard. I bought an assortment of two dozen just-baked doughnuts with some of every type to share with a friend and take home. We got to the car and dug in. With one singular exception, none of them were any better than a Safeway doughnut. The potato flour didn't add much to the flavor or texture as near as I could tell. Everything about them was pedestrian, from the glaze to the cake. Coming from Portland, the land of Voodoo Doughnuts and Sesame Doughnuts, I know what can be done by people that know how to do it, and cheap to boot. Spudnuts needs to work on their doughnut skills. The coffee was terrible. Get with the program, folks! Decent coffee in bulk is available at any local Costco (one is in Kennewick), as well as any of the burgeoning coffee roasters that have popped up around the Pacific Northwest. I made a quick Google search and turned up several in the Tri-Cities area alone, and there are dozens of others in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho that will roast coffee for commercial customers. There is no excuse for bad coffee in Washington State, especially at a doughnut shop. The only bright spot on the menu is their maple bar. I have to admit that those were probably the best maple bars that I have ever eaten, and the guy with me agreed. The potato flour really comes through, the bar is fluffy inside and has a semblance of a crunchy shell of brown outer crust, and the maple glaze is also very good. Those maple bars are the only reason I wouldn't give this place zero stars. If you are from out of town, don't bother making a special trip; however, if you are passing through town or live in the area, the maple bars are worth eating. Be sure to bring your own coffee. There is a Roasters Coffee just to the south, and a Starbucks to the north, and probably others that I haven't mentioned, any of which would be a much better choice. read more

Im giving it a 2 because its a local place. I normally just go in to grab a doughnut or 2. I actually decided to sit down with my wife here one day and got a look at there tiny little menu. Once I saw that a peanut butter and jelly sandwich cost $6.00 we both had a good laugh and then left without buying anything since everything was way over priced. read more

I asked to speak to the owner regarding congestion concerns in their parking lot after being struck this morning by one of their customers in a pick-up truck. The employee refused to put me in contact with the owner or relay any message, stating that I was wasting my time. The employee then threw my card in the trash right in front of me. We got there at 145, and was told they close at 4 and shut off the grill at 2. Really,2 hours before you close? The service was good, our waitress was nice. The food was OK, I got a French dip and it was burned but the hamburgers were OK. The doughnuts were dry but fine for a cheap donut. That is not my issue. My issue is we paid the bill after we got the doughnuts, then sat and ate them and talked. My friend and I used the bathroom and as I was leaving, a different lady asked if we had paid. I said yes we already did and left. My friend comes out of the bathroom and she says sorry to bother you but did you guys already pay!?!?!? So basically she was calling me a liar and thought I skipped out on the check. I thought that was very rude, and we will not be back. One last thing, the boxes they keep their doughnuts in are stacked on the floor right next to the bathroom, with the bathroom garbage can right next to them. I just really wanted a good donut this morning. Googled donut places near me. Spudnut pops up! They interested me for their potato base they use. Went in around 11:11 am. Most choices were gone! Come earlier than I did or call ahead! The quality is fantastic. Rich full flavor that is pretty heavy. I bought a dozen mix of cake and rise. Both are great choices. I really enjoyed maple with nuts! Give em a shot they're pretty cheap. read more

I grew up in the Tri-Cities, and as part of a church service project, would go and pick cherries in Benton City. We would always meet at the Spudnut shop at 5:00AM, get spuddies and hot chocolate, and then go hit the orchard. Now, every time I go home to visit, the Spudnut shop is a must. It's my favorite place to hit up when I go back in town to visit the parentals. This place never disappoints. I believe it's like 1 of 2 places in the U.S. that specializes in making potato flour doughnuts and it was even featured on the Food Network. But even before all the notoriety, it's been a staple for most people in Richland. I still remember when our high school teachers would treat the students to these delicious little morsels for early morning meetings. I prefer these over krispy kreme, top pot and all those other franchise type doughnut shops. There's nothing that compares to the texture and consistency of these doughnuts fresh out of the fryer. They've got a good variety of spudnuts at the shop but the classic maple bar is proabably my favorite. Oh and I almost forgot to mention the best part of this place, the doughnuts are cheap! I think they were less than 1 dollar each. I almost forgot how cheap they were since I've been used to forking out 2-3 dollars per doughnuts in Seattle. Maybe I might be biased in this review having grown up on these doughnuts or it just might be nostalgia talking but please try this place out if you are ever in town. It's a nice family owned business that's been there even before I was born so I'm sure they appreciate all the visitors they get. Happy eating! read more

Best doughnuts ever. Coffee is very decent as well. Never had any food there, not why you go there. Had people ask me to stop and bring doughnuts whenever we visit, and have even had people make a special trip just for the doughnuts. Only potato based doughnuts in Tri-Cities I believe. I prefer the potato flour over wheat flour in breads because of moisture retention. Spudnuts is a place you need to at least get a doughnut at once. Another place is the Zips in Kennewick next to the cable bridge. They have the best tartar sauce. No joke. The other Zips in Tri-Cities fail in comparison. read more

So, if you're in the tri-cities and want a great doughnut go to Spudnut. Don't make a long journey just for Spudnut without first checking that they're open. read more

I really enjoy the food there but the service is awful. The main lady there is very rude. She refused to serve us any lunch items although there were people there eating lunch. This is the second time that they have treated us this way which is unfortunate. I would like to go back and give it another try, hopefully someone more cheerful will be working. read more

We haven't been able to make it to this shop yet. Looking at the reviews, I don't think some people appreciate a good Spudnut. There used to be a Spudnut shop in Tillamook, Or where we used to live and they were great, but sad to say it has been long gone. We thought about going to Richland to try them until we found out they are closed on Sats. Guess we will just have to figure out a way to get there on a "work" day. read more
