Been two times since they opened to get a good feel for the new to Hanover eatery. On a lunch had the yellow fin tuna tacos. Pretty good, smaller portion, would have left hungry if not for the bread basket and dipping sauce. Dinner was a family affair with salads, Thai mussels app, burgers, kid's chicken fingers and a side of risotto. Everything was a solid good. Menu is a bit all over from Thai mussels to cheese burgers to bolognese. It was a little too much and really limited the choices we'd make. Honestly would go to a few other places for a burger, didn't try the bolognese, but wouldn't get that unless at an Italian restaurant, the Asian influence... someplace else. Interior was lively and densely populated. Service on the pushy side. Owner did stop by to check on just about everyone in our line of site. Seems like they care and want their venture to be successful. Admirable. Good local option with something for everyone is maybe the angle. Worth a try for sure. read more

Went with my family and sat on the heated patio, started with the pork gyoza dumplings...the pork shoulder on top is my favorite bite of the night. I got steak frites, which came with a pretty good side salad and hollandaise, very delicious. Overall pretty expensive but it's a nice restaurant with great food and service. read more

This was my second time eating at this location. The first time was a 5 star experience (great service and really good food), but my recent visit on May 16 was just a 4 due to the very strange dessert I received. For my entree I had the Bolognese which is very hearty and delicious. I ordered carrot cake for dessert. It wasn't carrot cake...or any kind of cake. It was a raisin bran muffin (no carrots were used) covered with whipped cream and toasted coconut. Very disappointing. read more

My first time at the Square. It was awesome. Even though there was a lot of people you could talk with out being loud the atmosphere was vey pleasant. The drinks came out quickly and they were very good appetizers came out quickly. We had the Calamari which came with mango and a little heat very nice. Went here for lunch on Friday around 2:00. It wasn't crowded - a nice little place. The food was excellent! We both enjoyed our entrees. The problem was the waiter. He showed after we got our drinks, then took our order (we had to call him over). Got our meals..however, our waiter never came by to see if we liked it. Well, OK. We needed our server to refill our iced tea. We had to ask someone to summon him to our table. When we thought he was coming, he walked by, and I said "excuse me". He helped someone else and then stopped by and said "did you need something?". He then disappeared, we asked someone to have him come over. I just wanted the check so we could leave. Not sure what the problem was. It was a painful experience. Too bad, because I'm usually an excellent tipper. Not for bad service, though. I would think twice about going here again, or ask for another server. read more

Was there for my first time and had a wonderful meal. But they do make you feel rushed as we were going to have desert beverages and our waitress politely told us they needed the table. So we went to the bar and stood and as 2 seats opened we sat and were rudely told by the bartender we needed a reservation. I have never heard that ever. Yet the women we ended up chatting with had been sitting there for quite a few hours and were not eating or drinking. So that made no sense to me. We spent a few hundred dollars at dinner and were rushed away from our table. I think they need to rethink a few things. As I would love to go back but only if I can relax and enjoy the time out not be rushed. I understand the time allotment during Covid but not know. read more

We have been to Square Cafe in Hanover several times. Every meal we have had has been wonderful. We were there this past Saturday night with six people and again the food was perfect from apps to dessert. My complaint is with a particular server. We have had her wait on us several times and I always feel as if she is curt and unfriendly, as if we are a bother. I wanted to suggest that she smile sometime (wouldn't do that of course). A definite attitude that made us all uncomfortable. The food, atmosphere, hostess and other staff that cleared the table were all amazing. read more

I went there this evening with my husband and 24 year old daughter. As soon as we walked in the door it felt as if the hostess was judging us and not impressed. My daughter who has a few tattoos felt as if she were being stared at and was made to feel very uncomfortable for the rest of the evening. Our server was wonderful. We remembered her from past dining at Davios and she is friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The drinks were good, but the food was just ok. read more

Square Cafe Hanover The newly opened Square Cafe within the Prevites Meat Market Complex in Hanover shares interior details reminiscent of the Hingham location with the addition of a large bar seating area along the back wall. We were pleased to see on this evening plenty of available seats at the bar. We were quickly greeted by the friendly barkeep who offered his name along with the wine and drink menu. Our plan was dinner with a glass or two of nice wine. Our plan; however was thwarted by "Durgin Park Bouncer" and Owner/Hostess with no-mostes, who began at one end of the long bar asking people to move Left or Right in an attempt to achieve some theoretical maximum compaction factor of available seats. By the time she got to us she had managed to disturb every person seated at the bar. Although we had only drinks, several people had their dinners in front of them and the heavy handed patron-herding resulted in more than one annoyed customer. As dedicated bar sitters, we know that it's common bar seating courtesy to slide down to accommodate folks at the bar, however at the time she was shuffling people around the bar was only 1/2 full. She explained that she wanted no single seats between groups. Clearly her days as a Navy Mess Hall Sergeant don't quite transfer into dealing with the paying public. As soon the couple beside us left, she immediately sprang into action to again rearrange the seating, it was at this point we had seen and experienced enough. Although we had already decided on entrees I asked the bartender to close our tab, we left our nearly untouched drinks on the bar and walked out! A great addition to the restaurant scene in Hanover. Classy interior, great service, solid food. Were there for Valentine's dinner, managed to score a reservation at a high top table about a week ago - restaurant was very busy although there were tables seemingly available at around 8 PM, also spaces at the nice bar. Only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because I'm a hard grader - needs to excel in every respect to warrant such a rating. I'd give Square Cafe Hanover 4.5 if I could -- my only (slightly) negative points: - Martini was a bit diluted, too shaken in order to fill the glass completely as opposed to serving less than a full martini glass but less diluted - which would have been my preference - Caesar salad didn't have enough "bite" - slightly on the bland side - My pappardelle with short ribs was also somewhat "bland" - maybe that's the way it's supposed to be, but I feel it could use a bit more taste somewhere - but it was a generous portion and had a great texture My wife's salmon was awesome, the crab cake appetizer was also, and the bread and olive oil/spice mix was VERY good. Easy to fill up on that. I am sure we'll be back there again before too long - great to have a nice, romantic restaurant in Hanover, a bit closer to Marshfield than the Hingham location, even if the Hingham restaurant is a very special place. read more

Me and my gf went Friday night. I had heard so many great things about this place I had to try it. The atmosphere and ambiance is great. We sat at the bar. Drinks and service were great. I had the salmon w/mashed potato. She had the chicken under a brick. Both were cooked to perfection. We both remarked on how good it was. We then had the carrot cake with ice cream.... Omg... Sooo good ! The place was packed and they handled everything like a well oiled machine. The owners came by as well to make sure everything was to our liking. It was really refreshing to see both of the owners hustling all night making sure everything was in order with everything. It certainly lived up to the hype I had heard about it. Needless to say we will be a regular customer. Looking forward to going again soon. read more

A friend and I came here for lunch last week; my 2nd visit, her first. Everything about Square Cafe is wonderful! Our server, Daniel, was fantastic! He was on top of everything we needed; super polite and helpful. Our meals were amazing! I had the Thai shrimp salad-delicious, and my friend had the squash bisque, of which I had a taste - incredible! The atmosphere and decor is lovely, with nice background music. Having been several times, wanted a nice dining experience for a special girls night out. Started with delicious cocktails, can't beat that pomegranate martini. Delicious bread and dipping sauce. We ordered the dumplings which are a big favorite and they didn't disappoint. First time trying the bolognese and it was a large portion and delicious (kind of a bolognese snob too). Also had the halibut which was reportedly cooked perfectly and seasoned great. Our server gave us space to linger a little (later seating) and we were very grateful. Just wish we could grab a drink at the bar before, a side effect of their popularity we know. Happy to return and great for a special occasion. read more

The dumplings were tasty and my son loved his salad. My burger was cooked well done. Disappointing. I wanted it medium and it was very dry and hard to chew. My husband and I had dinner here on a Saturday night. I didn't make reservations as I had planned to get there when they opened at 5pm. Considering this almost the early bird time, I figured I'd be safe. Upon arrival, the hostess asked if we had a reservation to which we said no. She said she could seat us but another party had reserved our table for 6:30 pm giving us 90 mins to dine. I know we didn't have a reservation but to hear we were on a time limit is never ideal. Our waiter was ok, lacking personality however, the strangest thing was his request for us to order all of our dishes at once (appetizers and entrees) as it 'helps the kitchen run efficiently.' With our 'timed' table and that additional comment, I just felt like they operated like a revolving door. I also observed staff running around and the atmosphere felt hectic. Luckily the food was fantastic. Bolognese was hearty and aromatic. Chicken Parm was large and chicken was tender. Dessert was also phenomenal. The staff/experience just needs help. Establishments that ask guests to facilitate the efficiency of the kitchen staff need to take a look at their business operations and optimize their processes. This rating is mostly due to the food but I hesitate to return as I like a calm and inviting experience when dining - not the experience I had at Square Cafe. read more

I am a longtime customer of Square Cafe in Hingham, which is why I am disappointed to write that I would not recommend anyone visit the new Hanover location. At initial interaction, the staff was rude. I attempted to check in for my reservation for upwards of 5 minutes. The manager watched me wait there, chatted leisurely with other staff, and took a personal phone call before begrudgingly asking me "do you need help." My party was reduced from 3 to 2 people at the last minute because a member of our party had a personal emergency and couldn't make it. While I understand this can be frustrating for a restaurant, we were told we may be yanked from our table at any point to seat a party of 4 that may or may not be coming in. We were paying customers, and this was extremely disrespectful. It took 30 minutes to receive a drink. While we were eating our food, we were asked 4 separate times if we would like a to-go box to pack up our food. They could not make it more obviously how badly they wanted to turn the table over. I had a fork in my mouth and staff was trying to take my plate away. Customer service is everything, especially for a new restaurant. I surely hope the Hanover Square Cafe can improve their attitude and accommodations in the future to mirror the Hingham location. I am disappointed and will not be returning for the time being. read more

Just amazing from the bread/ olive oil pesto, to every entree we have had. Very accommodating to all of our requests. High quality food prepared correctly. Outstanding!! Tonight we had the cod, peach burrata salad topped with chicken, and the chicken Parmesan. Can't say enough about all three, just delicious. We will be back soon. We had a fantastic dinner at the Square. I ordered the Salmon with a crusty top that was simply out of this world. We had a very special bottle of wine, as we celebrated our day at the Antiques Road Show.
