The Square Root wins on food, but fails on service. My husband and I had been to the Hendersonville location for lunch where we had a similar experience. At that time, we chalked the service up to eating at 3pm. However, we decided to try it again in Brevard for dinner. We went out with my parents on Sunday night. My mother had made a reservation for 7:00 that apparently was never written down. We did get a table, though, so it wasn't the end of the world. We arrived a little after my parents, who were sitting at the table with menus, but no drinks. The server hadn't been by yet, so they weren't able to order waters to start even. We decided on drinks after stealing a drink menu with a wine list inside from a neighboring table since ours was missing one and we still hadn't seen a server. After looking around for a while, I made eye contact with the host who came over and took our drink order. A few minutes later, the server finally showed up with our wine, minus my husband's beer. Perhaps five minutes later, his beer finally arrived. The overall impression we got was that the server did not want us as a table, though he didn't seem all that busy. He made some small talk with us briefly, but afterward paid no attention to us to the point where refills on water had to be requested and that was only brought to the person who requested it. At one point, my husband sat for almost 10 minutes without a beer, though he really wanted to order another. At one point, I used my napkin to clean up a spill and let him that that one away with my salad plate, at which point I asked for another one. Our entrees came, but the napkin didn't. My husband and I shared his napkin for a while, and I asked again when the server finally came back. The guy actually huffed at the request, though he did show up with two extra napkins after that. I'm a server myself, so I tend to be fairly forgiving of mistakes, particularly when I can see the server is busy. This guy just didn't seem to want us, though. I could somewhat understand that (though not letting a customer know) if we had shown up 15 minutes before closing, but we arrived at prime dinner service time. The food was another story altogether though. The menu was broad enough to appeal to range of tastes, but not overwhelming. The entree prices were, for us, special occasion prices (one at $15, most around $19-$23), but the sandwich and salad prices were very reasonable for dinner (around $10 for most). We were celebrating my birthday, so I ordered the special, which was a lobster scampi with a 6 oz. lobster tail. Both the lobster and the pasta were cooked perfectly and the flavors were amazing. I almost never finish a meal at a restaurant (I'm a big fan of leftovers), but this was so good I was practically licking my plate. My parents both got the tuna tataki salad while my husband ordered the southwest chicken sandwich. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food just a much as I did. Honestly, if I were rating the restaurant on food alone, I probably would have given it a 5, but I would have given the service a 1. You can have the best food in the world, but bad service can ruin a meal and make customers not want to return. We might give them another chance since we live in town now, but I think we'll explore our other options first. read more

We have had the opportunity to visit Square Root on several occasions now, and our experience improves with every visit. The menu offers the perfect blend of creative and familiar. The atmosphere invites clientele to relax and linger. The porch provides an interesting seating option late into the cool weather months. Amazing!!! The fried Brie appetizer was melt in your mouth fantastic- a bit like starting off dinner with dessert. The shrimp and grit cake was the best thing we ordered all night. A diverse menu and wait staff was very welcoming - and we did not feel uncomfortable having our 2 year old with us. By the way, the 2 year old highly recommends the peanut butter pie! read more

We live in Asheville and have always wanted to try the food at square root. We finally got the chance august 7th. We got there kinda late, about half an hour before they closed, and we stood at the host stand for a couple of minutes while no one spoke to us. Finally a server said that someone would be right with us. Then that same server came back a couple minutes later and sat us herself. She ended up being our server too. I don't know how to describe it, but it was the most awkward service we've ever received. We are both seasoned service industry people ourselves, so maybe we pay more attention to these things, but it was just bad. She was not unfriendly...she just didn't care. I know we were there shortly before closing, but where I work we seat until a certain time but once you are in and seated you get the same service as anyone else that came in that day. We asked if we could get a side salad instead of one of their dinner salads and she said "No." Not "no sorry the chefs don't do that" or "I wish but the menu is the menu and the portions are the portions." Just a flat "no" and then a stare waiting for us to order. I have off nights too, but I always at least AIM to please. We got a burger medium rare , it was cooked perfectly but somehow had absolutely zero flavor. It was weird how it didn't taste like anything--how'd they do that!? The fried zucchini strips were absolutely incredible, and gave this review two stars instead of one. The mussels were ok, but I can think of ten places in Asheville to get better mussels. The brevard brewing beer on draft was good, we had one of each kind. Our friend got a salad with shrimp on it, and the shrimp literally had no seasoning. Like no salt, no herb, nothing. She asked if she could have the Cajun shrimp from another dish on her salad and they said yes...this isn't a really hard request but apparently they figured they'd just dump some plain, no seasoning shrimp on the salad and we would be too dumb to know the difference. Point is our server didn't care and the cooks didn't care. They weren't there to please the customer, they were there cause it's just some job. Oh also we were seated at a dirty table and one of our beer glasses was filthy, we drank it anyway. Good dining in brevard is tough, but if you want just a solid meal with no frills Jordan street cafe always delivers, otherwise head to Asheville. I came here with my parents and boyfriend on a recent trip to Brevard, and we all loved our food. I had the hangar steak with veggies, potatoes and red pepper butter sauce, and I ate every bite. My dad, who knows his food, had the pork shank with mushrooms, and he thought it was fabulous and said it was as good as what you would get in France at a good restaurant there. Our waitress (Rosie) was lovely and very attentive. We had a yummy egg nog cheesecake for dessert. Will definitely come back when we visit my parents next time. read more

They make fairly consistently good food at reasonable prices. However on a celebration dinner for my in-laws anniversary they didn't take our entree order until we had been there for at least 30 minutes. Then the entrees did not come out until 1 1/2 hour after we had arrived and some were slightly burnt. With a 21 month old child this was far too long to sit and made it difficult to enjoy the meal. We have come before and not waited so long so I thought it would be appropriate for the toddler, but I was disappointed. Must try the roasted honey buffalo cauliflower appetizer (should be on the menu permanently coming spring time) I've never had homemade bean burger but I have to say the flavor was all there and the texture was not soggy at all, had a great crispy layer to it. The fries however was probably left out a little longer and was stale and cold. Honestly tasted and looked like McDonald's fries. Great restaurant, great food and staff. Their hamburgers, salads, entrees are all wonderful. Have eaten here several times over the last 2 years. The only challenge is the fact the restaurant seating is limited so during the tourist season it is a challenge to get a table without a reservation. Great food, great atmosphere. Tonight, we were disappointed with the service and kitchen timing. Meal took an hour and 45 minutes. The gap between courses was painful, mainly as the awesome live music became louder as the night wore on. Went from sweet accompaniment to overwhelming loud rock. Wouldn't have been a problem if the food would have arrived within the first hour, nor if the server had gauged our party better. Probably a function of a slammed Saturday evening with everyone at capacity. I'll try again under better circumstances. Mostly still disturbed that service was off. read more

I tried to get a reservation at 6:30pm and was told that the wait to be sat outside would be 20 -30 min. To be sat in the inside area would be a wait until 8:30pm bc of reservations. So we went to the wine bar down the road and 5 min later they told us our table was ready. I had my girlfriend take the reservation while I paid for the wine we chugged down. The table was at the far corner of the outside patio where there was no heat in 45' weather. I took a look at the couple sitting next to us freezing in their jackets and stocking caps and said let's find a spot at the bar or leave. The MC was accommodating and made a seat by his "desk" at the side of the bar. After 20 minutes, we finally were able to put a drink and appetizer order in. It wasn't until we were done with our appetizer that we were asked for a dinner order and at that point i was down with being blown off, so we left to make food at our airbnb. The hush puppies were good, but she pimento cheese was cream cheese with some red chiles. Not impressed. read more

I'm calling this place out as a no-show. I showed up with a party of four from out of town for a weekend dinner and drinkathon, when the place was nearly empty. We were promptly seated, and proceeded to wait a full hour without so much as an acknowledgement from waitstaff. When I approached the bar to get drinks, I found myself dealing with employees who-- while not openly hostile-- were clearly smashed beyond the point of professional decorum. After an hour's time we left our prime spot on the patio to go around the corner to try any other one of Brevard's fine establishments that are able and willing to take our tourist dollars in exchange for food and spirits. read more

I really wanted to like this place, but it was just a mess. I ordered a Diet Coke but it was completely flat. I let our very nice waitress know that I'd stick to water. She apologized but instead brought me another Diet Coke. This too was also flat despite her insistence that there were a few bubbles in it. Ok fine, that happens sometimes. Next, a tomato in the side salad is moldy. We let the waitress know and she apologized. The manager came to our table, apologized profusely and offered another salad to which we declined. He let us know that he was taking a few dollars off our check. Then we receive the entrees and unfortunately, not only were they devoid of any seasoning whatsoever, but my burger was raw in the middle and there were not one but TWO hairs in my food! They were not my own as they were a different color. We eat at Square Root every time we are in Brevard, which is twice per year for the last five years, and the food and service does not disappoint! The Brussels Sprout Carbonara was amazingly luxurious, with a velvety, rich sauce and the roasted Brussels sprouts were a genius addition! If you can, ask to seat in Rosie's section. Dear Friends, It is 3 am and I literally cannot sleep after one of the greatest dates of my life. From the very start of the idea, the owners & marketing staff succeed in a very informative and useful website. The design effectively communicated an amazing menu that made us choose you over the excellent Marco's Trattoria. The professional reservation program effectively communicated our arrival time & even paved the way for all to know our special occasion. Once we arrived, the owner's commitment was obvious by the investment in a functional POS that effectively communicated our reservation and special occasion (which was communicated to all of the staff). The pleasant host looked us in the eye with a smile and honestly communicated about the Arcade's parking details. The staff's commitment was obvious in a decor that was clean, well maintained, warm and inviting with perfect sound levels, lighting & climate control. Service was prompt and comfortable with the well informed floor manager double checking we had been communicated with by our server. Nathan was honest & informed as the primary communicator of the establishment. Am I using the word communicate too much? Sorry. Communication in the back of the house between chef, sous chef & expo, was evident by every aspect of both dishes arriving at perfect temperature, texture & flavor. The presentation of the Ahi tuna & the catfish special communicated the care & professionalism of a talented line. With Nathan's recommendation, we chose a moist, decadent triple chocolate cake that communicated management cared enough not to push out $10 slices of dry Cisco cardboard cake made in Ohio. The quality coffee was served at the perfect temperature in the cleanest of china (thank you dish pit). To top it all off, the above was accomplished in the ridiculously short time of 45 minutes so we could make a movie at the charming Co-Ed Cinema (highly recommended as is the film "Oblivion"). A week away from Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmare... Seriously, this was my first thought when we walked in to an empty restaurant at 7.30pm on a Friday and they were turning people away! The servers were nice, friendly and pleasant...however poorly trained, awkwardly offering service(no fault of theirs if they do not have leadership). The food coming out of the kitchen was mostly marginal...my wife and I ordered mostly appetizers and also ordered the prime rib special. Fried Green Tomatoes should be taken off the menu and they should apologize to any southerner for serving them. They are over breaded, over ripe and cooked in old oil. Two of the five "slices" were non existent as they were essentially slices of an under ripe red tomato that will completely cook when fried. The batter was overwhelming...what little tomato was there was overpowered by a thick eggy batter. The Bavarian Style Preztel itself was good...the salami, gouda and swiss that accompanies it was poor quality, presliced "product" from a mass market provided. The fried black eyed peas were quite good...good job on serving those. Grilled chicken lettuce wraps...a decent job, probably one of the better apps. The tuna trio, also good in flavor...however, presentation it is a disaster. The pieces of tuna looked like they had been cut with a butter knife. The fried cauliflower, again with a thick, eggy batter, were not good. Flavor was off and again tasted like it had been cooked in old oil. The pickled celery was the star of this dish. The prime rib was fine...however, it was served, a waitress came back to take it away because she thought is the wrong one...then returned it from the kitchen telling us it was the right one afterall? Having your food travel back and forth a few times isn't exactly appealing. Overall, Square Root is overpriced with marginal food; we will not return. Much better food at Mayberry's(although very different service), for a third of the price a block away... or take an adventure to the Lumberyard and eat at Magpie's! read more

Great food!! My wife and I are big time foodies, we are transplant from the west cost and currently live in Savannah Ga, both of which have pretty good food scenes. Given our situation of being away from home due to hurricane Dorian we sampled a good bit of the menu. We started with the Firecracker Shrimp which was darn good, the broccoli that accompanied it was very tasty. The wife got the soup of the day also very good. It was a tomatillo sweet potato soup. The Cajun shrimp and grit cake was on par with some of the best shrimp and grits we have had in the low country. The Brussels sprouts were very tasty. I order a London broil sandwich, it was good and the au jus made it so much better. If you are ever in Brevard check this place out great food. read more

I fell in love with this place even before the food arrived. The food did not disappoint. Baby back ribs with a ginger, chili glaze and rabbit gumbo, (more a stew than a gumbo but good none the less). Service was great and all the staff appeared to enjoy working here. Probably didn't pick the "best" time to arrive. Was a late lunch @ 4 pm, just enough to get in on the lunch specials. Service was ok, but then disappeared for 15 min. Had the London Broil sandwich and mac/cheese. Both were microwaved. Didn't enjoy either. Sweet tea was good. I'm guessing they are more on point during the full lunch or full dinner period....not inbetween. Parking isn't easy and yes, you need to pay that lot. read more

Really enjoyed my meal at square root. I was visiting from out of town for the Fourth of July holiday and made a reservation for myself. I ordered three apps and a glass of wine. I always have a hard time judging service when dining by myself. I rate 4 stars because I feel like it took a long time to be greeted at my table or given water but after I placed my order the service was very friendly. My apps were the osso buco lollipops, the short ribs and the fried green tomatoes. This turned out to be enough food for two meals for me. The short ribs were probably the best I've ever had. The meat was falling off the bone tender but the outside was perfectly crispy. I probably could have done without the fried green tomatoes though. They were tough and when I tried to cut them the breaking all just fell off. This didn't bother me though because the short ribs were so amazing. I would definitely come back for them! The osso buco was a solid dish as well. read more

Square Root is a cool hip restaurant located in downtown Brevard, NC tucked away in an alley. The building itself if really cool with an industrial meets the outdoors feel. The floor inside the restaurant is interesting. There is ample outdoor seating. They have numerous local brews on tap and a decent selection of wine. The service was extremely friendly and efficient. I had the 6 cheese pasta purses with meat sauce. The dish was pretty good albeit a huge portion and a bit heavy. I really liked some of the other dishes ordered by my friends. They had the catfish, chicken Marsala, and burger. I tried the Marsala and the catfish which were both great. The burger looked juicy and perfectly cooked. Overall the atmosphere and service are really good. The food is good. I want to try more things on the menu before determining if this place is 4 or 5 stars. read more

Good food, nice bartenders, not too pricey. A little on the classy side if you're not going to eat off the bar menu. I've only eaten here a handful of times, but from what I remember the food has always been tasty. If you're going solely for drinking purposes, it's one of about three bars in all of Brevard, so you won't have a problem getting here sooner or later. read more

We shared a roasted Brussels sprout starter and then I had a friend green tomato BLT. Both were delicious. I ordered my fries extra-crispy but arrived soft. Not a deal breaker for sure! Great casual location. Eclectic mix of patrons - from children to older adults; rustic to well-heeled. Everyone seemed to be enjoying their time in this unpretentious venue. A couple in front of us ask for a table for 2 and are told they need to wipe down a table (they didn't have reservations). The host disappears for another 10 minutes. Great lunch spot. One of the only restaurants to stay open in the dreaded 3-6 time frame in Brevard. House salad with house mandarin orange dressing is a staple. Mac and cheese is good as a side. I've tried most of the items on the menu over the years and while it's not going to be the best meal you ever had it's a very solid experience. Our older parents love it. I would warn against the chicken and waffle for Sunday brunch. I had to laugh when they brought me a horribly dry waffle topped with 2 tiny out of a bag chicken tenders. Terrible. Our waitress (I wish I could remember her name; she was awesome) was attentive and helpful and kind.
