Beautiful historic setting and I was seated in a great spot to enjoy the stained glass above. I had the 8 oz smoked prime rib with a loaded baked potato, green beans, and a side salad with their delicious house made blue cheese dressing. I enjoyed a cocktail as well with it and it all amounted to about $50 for the meal. It was totally worth the money and they gave you a lot to eat for that price. Very good. Beautiful decor but food was, hit or miss. Admittedly it was a Tuesday and we were the only diners. The steak pot pie was excellent. The brisket was not, tough and dry. The waitresses were great, they were bored and we got bored, so nice to visit with. The prailine cheesecake was good, but the bread pudding was old and cold. Might go back, but probably not for dinner during the week. Edit to add: I was pleased to hear from the manager the next day, desiring to make it right. read more

Friday I call the Gyser Grand to make reservations at the dining room for March 21st at 5pm for 7 people. The person who answered the phone took the information and told me the GM would call me back. I thought this was a little unusual but ok. About a half of an hour later this same person called back and said he had a question. Wanted to know if we lived in Baker and I told him no, 4 would be traveling from Pendleton and 3 from Union, he hesitated and I felt I needed to explain that this dinner was a birthday celebration, no cake or anything else just dinner. He said ok and then wanted to know if we needed a private room. I answered his question, he then said he would give this information to the GM and this person would call me back. This is Sunday morning and I have not received a phone call. What happened to when someone calls to make a reservation you just get their information and make a reservation? In all my years of taking or making reservations have I ever asked or have been asked if I reside where the restaurant is. So disappointed with the Gyser Grand. I am updating this. This is Monday and still no return phone call. I would never recommend this place as they can't even make a simple reservation. read more

Classy place to stop. We had excellent service from Julie as we stopped in for my wife's birthday. The prime rib was a bit overcooked but the smashed potatoes were great. My ribs were juicy and the onion rings were perfect. The atmosphere was good too. It was a bit pricey but we knew that going in. read more

Came in at 830pm on a Saturday night thinking we'd have to eat at the bar but they were able to sit us right away, which made me think maybe it's not very good. That was definitely not the case, we had a couple appetizers that were great. Main course, salad and ribeye were on point, cooked to perfect midrare. We also ordered 3 desserts to go, the waiter brought them out in small separate boxes. I asked if they had a bag to put them in, he said he'd go find one. I overheard the waiter and another employee talk about not having any to go bags and I saw our waiter head towards the kitchen. I went to the restroom and when I came back there was a small produce box on the table with our desserts in them. Kudos to the waiter for thinking outside the box. I think he was new to this restaurant but definitely not inexperienced. Very impressed with everything there, and the whole hotel is absolutely beautiful. Can't wait to come back! read more

We dined here the Saturday before Mothers Day. We ate in the bar area. I ordered a wedge salad which I did not get. Medium rare Prime Rib and was served well done. The baked potatoe was good. The brocolli was burnt. The desserts were delicious. My problem was with the Gemalto bartender. Came in, did not wash her hands.i observed her rub the back of her hand under her nose 3 x and did not use kleenex or wash her hand. She then made a cosmopolitan for diner. Opened a plastic container, reached in with her dirty hand, and pulled out a garnish for the drink!! Also, I consider this a fine dining restaurant. Go for the free bread: it's as beautiful as the stained glass ceiling you'll be staring at throughout dinner. This bread is fresh, warm, fluffy like a cloud on the inside and has the sexiest soft crunch on the outside. It's the kind of bread you could eat without butter it's so good (but if you do use butter you certainly won't regret it). A thousand blessings to our server who returned my request for more bread near the end of my meal with a wink and came back 5 minutes later with not ONE but TWO CARBOHYDRATE CLOUDS FROM HEAVEN. As for the food on the menu, the "Mushroom Marsala with Grilled Polenta" is one of their most popular dishes for a reason. It's creamy cheese base and hearty helping of thickly cut tender mushrooms makes for a dish that seems to hug your heart and soul. The Polenta is the best cooked I've ever had: it's seasoned well and cooked so that it's the perfect density (like a little cake). Other places crisp their Polenta too hard and it gets stuck in your teeth, or they make it way too salty or not seasoned enough. Geiser Grand gets it right! The "Artichoke Dip" wasn't thick enough and the crostini its served with was quickly forgotten for the free bread. If you do order this appetizer, I do have to admit that I LOVED sopping up all the left over sauce with the free bread. I didn't try the other entrees, but from the looks of the dishes and the reactions of the others at my table, the food overall is fairly standard and nothing special. Palm Court is in the historic Geiser Hotel. Unfortunately, this location has had its better days. The menu is very limited, they are short staffed, the facility needs an overhaul, the food is very mediocre. We had the salmon and cod fish the wedge salad and the crispy green beans. All were incredibly average and not what i would expect from a once "happening" hotel. No bread served as was mentioned in other reviews. This has had its better days. I wouldn't recommend in any way. It's almost like they have given up. The only positive was our server. She worked hard, pleasant attitude. She was the ONLY server for the whole place and bar too. She made us both good cocktails. She did a great job and we appreciated her. read more

I love the atmosphere of this dinning room within the Geiser Grand Hotel. The ceiling stained glass was stunning. However, our experience was not. Although being the first customers, the hostess went to seat us in a back corner limiting our ability to take in the grandeur of the room. The current menu is poorly printed as toner needs a new cartridge. Difficult to make out actual sections of the menu. Our strawberry lemonades were so tart that even adding sweetener and watering down couldn't make them drinkable. The salmon at its thickest section was largely undercooked and unappetizing. WOW that's all I can say. Okay well I can say more....you have to go here this place is amazing!!! Talk about a hidden gem. Located inside a beautifully redone historic hotel the Palm Court sits under a stained glass ceiling. The steaks are all hand cut and dry aged for 30 days. According to the chef nearly 80% of the beef previewed doesn't make the cut for selection to be served. At the suggestion of our waitress my husband and I both ordered the Wallowa a 12oz NY Strip served with a morel mushroom white wine cream sauce and holy moly this steak was delicious. The steak cooked perfectly had the most mouth watering beef flavor and the sauce well I can't put it in words how good it was. The accompanying carrots were fresh, tender and stood out on their own and that's saying a lot for a side of carrots. The garlic mashed potato was also good. Warm bread served at the beginning was heavenly. Finished the meal with the chocolate salted caramel cake which was so moist it was brownie like. The wait staff was very attentive, our waitress knew about the menu and was able to give recommendations based on your preferences. Our two kids were with us and she brought out their meals first as a restaurant should. She kept our tea refilled and checked in our meal ensuring it was cooked to our likeness. Don't be fooled by the positive ratings - they are dated. Palm Court is not worth your dollars or time. I've stopped here 3 or 4 times in the last couple of years and it is going down hill. The fish is always over cooked. The rubbery halibut I had tonight was not worth the $32 price. And the wait staff is woefully ill-prepared by management. I saw two tables leave after receiving no service. Of any kind. One after 20 minutes - as in no menus even provided. The other after politely waiting 30 minutes and even requesting service after 20. It is not the fault of the wait staff. Clearly the owner is unable to manage the facility up to its historic standards. Very sad to see a local gem so poorly deliver. Hopefully new ownership and energy may be in the offing as this place deserves it. In the meantime, don't be fooled by the exterior. Palm Court of old is a distant memory. read more

1889 Cafe is part of the Geiser Hotel which has the same menu as the Palm Court. The food was delicious for lunch. I had the Bistro Salad with steak. Wait staff was slow and music was bad disco. It was too cold with air conditioning on a day that was about 60 degrees. We saw 2 parties walk out. I would not go back considering the options in this interesting town. read more

To management.... following is a very sad story. I have lived in Baker City for 11 years now and have been coming to eat at the Geiser for that long. Yesterday myself, sister and nephew came in for lunch. Now I have ordered this same thing for probably 30 times. The prime rib sandwich with bread on the side and a salad instead of fries. It has never been an issue but yesterday it was. This waiter has had an attitude before with us and when I said I want the bread on the side he says "it comes on top" and then when I asked for a salad instead of fries the answer was just NO. Not, I can do a salad for an up-charge, but just plain NO. So I asked to speak to management and he came back and said "management won't come and we don't substitute and if you don't like it you can leave". Well needless to say we left. The place was empty and you just lost at least $50. and a whole lot more. Mgmt replies: Thank you for reaching out. Indeed, it is true that there was no manager on the property when you were here yesterday. Manager Andrew will give you a call to discuss this tonight. We are very sorry that you were disappointed with your experience yesterday. I do know that there is no option for a free or "substitute" salad with any sandwich; if that was an option in years past, it hasn't been for over a year. I can also tell you that we try to be as transparent and clear as possible; we post our menu in the window and on facebook, and there is no salad substitution option offered on our menu. Salads are available a la carte only, and are listed as that on the menu. If you don't care for our menu offerings, we understand that you will then be having lunch elsewhere. However, staff members shouldn't be blamed for what is and is not on the menu. Again, we'll look forward to a more full conversation directly with the Manager later today. Thanks again.
