When I arrived on W.9th I was immediately shocked to see 3 women dressed alike dancing with big red balls. Street performers! I couldn't believe my eyes. I have always thought Cleveland was the sort of town that would never accept the creativity, craziness, and the gutsiness it takes to put yourself out there and make such a statment. The women, all young adults, were wearing black jumpers, red tanks, and striped B/W tights. Their moves were slightly choreographed, but usually it appeared that they were free forming until one decided to syncronize. My second thought was that my bff coming to meet me was going to be horrified. I didn't specifically know that she had a fear of mime-like creatures, but given all her other fears, I knew it was a safe bet. Sure enough the first words out of her mouth were "I AM NOT STAYING HERE WITH THOSE THINGS." You know it is bad when someone refers to a performer as a "thing." Somehow, she let us stay and we really enjoyed them. It is just cool to see people on the street united around a common interest. The dancers gave strangers a reason to feel connected and that is always cool in my book.

You start your visit at the visitor center. There you can check in for a visit in the Garfield house which is only accessible with a free guided tour. While waiting, you can explore the exhibition about President Garfield's life and visit the gift shop. President Garfield's life is an American rags to riches story. His father died when he was two and he was raised by his mother in poverty. For this he was mocked and bullied, which made him very sensitive. He left home at age 16 and went to work on a canal boat in Cleveland, managing the mules. In 1858 he married Lucretia Rudolph, and they had seven children, five of whom survived infancy, four boys and a girl. Therefore, the family needed a big house, and in 1876 Garfield purchased the Lawnfield estate in Mentor and its house, which was expanded and restored many times both during his life and after his assassination. The house has since been restored to its original color. On the property you can also visit his 1880 campaign office, which was originally his library, and see the windmill, which pumped water into the faucets, bathrooms, and laundry rooms of the house. The beautiful house is a remarkable and great part of the Ohio and American history. You also enjoy the original decoration and furniture of the house. The dining room is set as a replica of the festive dinner the Garfield family ate to celebrate the news that James had been elected president. When you are in the area, remember also to visit the James A. Garfield Memorial at Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland.

Today, thanks to a…read morewonderful tour provided by Victor, a ranger with the National Park Service, I can now not only say that I know much more about him, but also that I would have voted for him as well. I learned a lot about politics in the late 1800's. Things have certainly changed. The James A Garfield National Historic Site is a treasure trove of history. The home is fabulous. Thanks to a generous 1934 gift from the Garfield children to the Western Reserve Historical Society, we can see the home as it looked when the Garfields lived there, complete with original furnishings and artwork. Transferred in 1980 to the National Park Service, we now can all enjoy this amazing home and its history by taking a tour. Lucretia Garfield was an extraordinary woman ahead of her time. After her husband was assassinated, she created a memorial library in the home, to preserve his books and presidential papers. The library included a fireproof vault to protect important documents. I loved the architectural details, coordinating wall paper, light fixtures, and the thoughtful touches that turned the lovely house into a home. I'd have happily paid for this excellent tour, but it was FREE. Honestly, I could go on and on. Definitely RECOMMENDED!

I even got my own pair of pointe shoes. I loved to dance. I did lyrical, ballet, tap, and jazz. But, when I did get older I had some bad experiences with getting yelled at. Yea, I wasn't Misty Copeland, but I also wasn't a someone with no strength and flexibility. I was told these were corrections and I wasn't to cry over them because I was getting help. I had some days where I'd be corrected with simple words, and not be humiliated in front of the class. One time my teacher said she didn't give a shit about the dance she was choreographing and said she was looking at me. Mind you I was on a week long vacation in Washington DC. I cried in the dressing room while my friends comforted me. My little sister also went to this dance studio and experienced just about everything I had. The good and the bad. I don't want to make this too long, so I'll just say a few more things. I quit in 2021 and my sister quit in 2022. I feel so much more anxiety free now and so does my sister. every time I had to go I just got a heap of anxiety in my stomach. Needless to say, the studio is really nice. if you want to sign up, I'm sure you won't regret and you'll make a lot of good friends. I just wanted to share my part.

Ohio in general, but Cleveland especially, is known for a long history of sports. One of the most fun stops was the Baseball Heritage Museum, which is one of the original MLB sites. Still an operating field, they also have outdoor displays, and an indoor museum (tickets are reasonable). We met Auntie Brenda who gave us a little rundown of the site, some notable history, and walked us around outside for a while too. There's a gift shop inside as well. If you're a fan of baseball or sports history in general, this is a must-stop to your visit to Cleveland.

I have now seen the Cleveland Opera Theater perform in a few contexts including a spring main stage production at the Maltz Performing Arts Center and a free outreach performance in a local park. They also have an "Opera in Alternative Venues" series which I find brilliant. I love the idea of activating unusual spaces with powerful talent, and pairing it with elegant activities like fine dining. Whether you consider yourself an aficionado or a true beginner of opera, COT makes valid strides to make opera accessible. They do this through reasonably priced and often free performances, community programming like Opera Club, and even logistical helpers such as translations during performances. Don't let opera discourage you, give the Cleveland Opera Theater a visit and you will not regret it!
