Decent comic book store overall. A good size (larger than the GSO location), but expecting a bit more products and merch for their size. They have the usual comics, PLENTY of new releases as well as old. A very good amount of McFarlane and Marvel Legends on the back wall. Honestly was hoping for more Funkos than they offered which wasn't much at all. The person that rang me up was nice, but outside of that interaction was all the service there was. Just a recommendation...and may be asking too much but music would have been pleasant or something in the background. It was me and just one other guy there and 1. It's always weird when there's no sound and you're just browsing with just you and the staff are there and it's verrry quiet 2. I've been shopping with ssalefish for over 10 years now, since I was in high school in the early 2010s. After checking out a few other comic stores, I realized I had been taking everything ssalefish was for granted. They always keep new books in stock, and they have a great selection of action figures and trade paperbacks too. On Black Friday and free, book day, they always run a great sale. Note to funko pop collectors. Don't expect to haggle here. Even though they have admitted multiple times that sales of pops are declining at their store(maybe because every other store has some sort of buy a few get a few discounted type of thing), they always mark the chase pops at PPG value. Which everyone knows is initially inflated. PLUS TAX. So you will always end up paying more than the PPG value AND on top of everything most times you won't receive a soft protector. These people couldn't care less about us pop collectors. Oh did you find a beat up chase at Ssalefish? Too bad, full price plus tax, most likely no protector. Fantastic comic book shop that is wall-to-wall filled with great merchandise. Some items can be rarer then others ranging from books, visual novels, action figures, memorabilia, collectibles, you name it. It's like a candy store for your inner child. Staff has always been friendly so don't feel intimidated when entering. They make great recommendations for readers and helpful if you need something in particular. Their trade-in system is very favorable. Unlike places like McKay's or GameStop they won't give you pennies for quality items. They are fair with pricing and credit. My only complaint is you can't use that trade credit for multiple locations so if you get it in Winston don't expect it to work with Greensboro/Concord locations. read more

One of the worst comic shops to do business with online. The owner led me to believe something that wasn't true, gave me the run-around, and flat out scammed me. That's in addition to sending me a jacked-up comic that I paid good money for. I pre-ordered a limited variant set of Batman 50 comics. Two sets actually. One of the virgin covers had a bad crease from top to bottom, down the middle of the back cover. I contacted Bret Parks (the owner) at Ssalefish Comics to inform him of the issue. He offered a refund, but I wanted a replacement. He told me to send it back, which I did. The next thing I know I'm getting a refund for $16.66 to my PayPal account. I contacted him and reminded him that I requested a replacement, not a refund. He told me he only had a couple left, and that they were messed up as well. I said that I'd prefer to have the comic back, rather than $16 (as I could have it pressed) , and he then told me he sold it. I asked if he could send me one of the others from the set and have his $16 back and he told me that I could go to the website and purchase one. Pre-order cost of set: $50 Cost of set now: $75 Comic 1: limited to 3000 Comic 2: limited to 1500 Comic 3: limited to 1000 So my 16.66 refund was based on the $50 original cost, and the number of copies made was not taken into consideration. I returned comic 3, the most valuable one, but I received a refund that did not reflect this. Refund amounts should have been as follows : Comic 1: $10 Comic 2: $15 Comic 3: $25 But then the pre-sale prices are now gone and the current set sells for $75 (a 50% increase). Current prices: Comic 1: $20 Comic 2: $30 Comic 3: supposedly no longer available. So with my refund ($16.66) for the rarest book in the set, I can't even buy the cheapest comic in the set. During our email communications, I was very polite, flexible, and attempted to work things out from multiple angles. But Bret's final response was "If I wanted a comic, then I could go to the website and buy one." Not a good way to do business, but a great way to lose a customer for life. I am not a collector of this type of merchandise but I think it is interesting to look through to spend some time. The staff was very nice and asked if they could help me with anything and I said no. **BUYERS BEWARE**Horrible business ethic... Saler is misleading & lies in order to make a few dollars. Online experience was the Worst!!! Charged $19.93 as a hidden fee for shipping when it wasn't mentioned until item was received... I paid $25.99 for a action figure with $6.49 shipping & handling in the description,but after realizing the credit card I used was connected to my paypal where I was also making other purchases elsewhere,I decided I wanted to use my Wells Fargo bank card instead. So I canceled the item while in transit for a Return so I could repurchase it with a different credit card and I put this as the reason when asked during the process for the printable Return Shipping label and as soon as the package was delivered/had arrived,I immediately went to UPS & returned it...Fast forward 2 days later I receive a pop up,email & text saying "Refund issued: $12.55"....Yes $12.55...When I contacted them after the run around misleading reasons for charging me $19.93 I was told ""I didn't make anything. A nice, clean comics and toys store with a friendly staff. That's not always a given when you're talking about comic stores. You won't find the stereotypical surly nerd owner who looks down his nose at his customers here. And there's no danger of a box of 25-year old Archie books falling on your head like at a lot of places. The owner was even nice to a guy who brought in a broken action figure to sell. I would have liked a larger selection of back issues with lower prices (how about a 50 cent box?) but I did find some stuff I was looking for. I also happened to be there when a minor comics industry celebrity came in, so that was cool. read more

I'm surprised by the negative reviews associated with this store. Ssalefish has some really cool stuff, and I've never had trouble with the staff. They have a wide selection of trade paperbacks and especially toys. In the past, I've asked about recommendations as I'm not as much of a diehard fan as I used to be when I was younger, and they've always given me good advice about what to choose, and also what would be a good gift for a younger fan. Where I find the store is lacking is in clothing. Some of my favorite comic book stores over the years always had some exclusive, cool t-shirts. These guys had some really good ones like "Magneto Was Right" in the past but their newer location currently doesn't carry any. They have some really cool toys and statues available. A few are more than what I'd spend on (back in my day, toys were $5), but I like their (unpackaged) $8 dollar section a lot. Outside of that, I don't think there's much more you can ask from a comic book store. Your other comic book options are limited and Burke Street Comics (which is now like 6th Street) has some cool stuff, but their new location is so unbelievably cramped, even compared to the old Ssalefish. Ssalefish has a nice, new, and larger location with more room. Support your local business and comic book store. read more

This is a great comic book shop! We've been getting our books here for years, and we've never had a bad experience. This is also a good place to get toys and collectibles. The only problem I have with this store is that they have so much cool stuff that I end up spending too much money! Definitely worth a visit. read more

Awful store. Made me feel unwelcome. The staff was unfriendly. Ask about a product shipping on Wednesday and they were clueless about the item and were very demeaning. Even though they were clearly wrong. To make matters worse one of the employees asked what I was going to do with the item. As it was any of his business. Very unprofessional. Only one guy is nice. The books on the newsstand are cramped into the slots, so most of the books have spine crease's, if more care was taken this would be a good spot to get new books. If the one cool guy is not working don't bother asking any questions that require effort from them. Don't bother looking to fill a collection here if it's old. It's like they hate old books. The pricing is good, also the older books they will actually let you look at are expertly graded, that's the two stars. read more

Had an awesome selection And the man working that night was so helpful! My husband and I stopped in randomly on a Saturday night just before they closed. The guy working never showed any frustration with us for coming in close to closing. Instead he took the time to look for back issues of Walking Dead and some others. The staff here is always super friendly and knowledgeable when it comes to comic books. The store is always very neat and clean, but is not a very big size. They have a great selection of new issues and paperbacks, but back issues are not the main priority here. It's in an awesome location right across from the mall as well. The owner was an absolute moron of the highest caliber. I have never met a store owner who was that rude and abusive to customers! This idiot followed me and my children out to our car running his mouth ! He was actually trying to get me to fight him ! And I have been a pretty good customer at his store. He said that didn't matter anymore ! Seriously ? You can't make this stuff up ! My 5 year old daughter was quite traumatized by the whole situation. If you shop there, you do so at your own risk ! This shop is very active and has a large selection of toys, figures, and comics. I don't collect most things, but had to have the 6 issues of "Dreaming Eagles". They have rare variants, of their own, and the employees have been good to a browser, who may not buy. I think the negativity of some of these reviews are personal problems of the reviewer and may be taken with a grain of salt. I like this place. read more

I truly wish that there was an option for 0 stars. This place is a sorry excuse for "business." Went into the store about a month ago to sell some carded vintage TMNT action figures that I had that my fiancé's deceased father had been keeping. Store employee bought the items for $800 and wrote me a check. This "business" cancelled the check and didn't contact me had I not contacted them I would have cashed a bad check. Store owner informed me that "it was an unauthorized purchase" and the employee who bought them had been fired and a new check would not be issued. I informed him that I had contacted an attorney and that legally if taken to court he would be forced to issue a check, he told me "he doesn't like that lawyer talk and I needed to come get the turtles by the end of the business day or he was going to throw them in the trash." I proceeded to tell him how I felt about him and he told me if I came on their property that he would have me arrested for trespassing. I called the cops had them show up to the store with me to sort everything out. The store owner proceeded to try to have me arrested for trespassing, the guy really needs to brush up on his knowledge of the law because I have to be in his store to be trespassing not at the shopping center. He also lied to the police officer telling him that another police officer had told me I wasn't allowed on the property. Needless to say I got my turtles back and three of them were missing AND they switched one of my soft head original turtles ($400-$1000) with a hard head ($90 value). I ended up taking the turtles over to Burke Street comics where Ryan was more than happy to help me and also told me that I wasn't the only one who had been screwed over by this "business." For sellers of older items they are not the way to go. Acme on Lawndale is much better. I learned a hard lesson. Acme can evaluate your older comics so much better and give your more. Ssalefish lives in the now and Acme understands comics didn't begin 5 years ago. read more

This one-star review is based on the owner's lack of common-sense decency and helpfulness. A thief stole 4 of my husband's most valued comics, including Amazing Spiderman #3, and sold all four to Ssalefish for $200. When the thief (apparently was a regular Ssalefish customer) confessed and said he had sold them to Ssalefish, my husband spoke with the owner Bret Parks who said he had sold them for $750, thus making a $550 profit. Bret did nothing to help track down the books nor did he offer to provide the profit he had made. We asked him to help find replacements and sell them at a discount, but he ignored these requests. Finally, when the Ssalefish Facebook page showed the store had acquired another Amazing Spiderman #3 and we asked Bret whether he would sell it at cost as a replacement for the stolen issue on which he had profited, he rudely said never to contact him again. Even if Bret had no knowledge these books were stolen when he bought and sold them, an honorable business owner would have tried to help recover these stolen books, particularly when he had a replacement for at least one of them and made significant profit on them. Bottom line, given all the other comic book store options around and on the internet, I would skip doing business with Ssalefish. read more
