Not sure how I have lived here for 20+ years and never stepped foot into McKay's until this weekend. Holy crap! Huge selection of records, CDs, DVDs, toys, etc.. I have been adding to my record collection and scored some good quality used records. Note, there is some junk that you have to weed through, but overall I was very pleased with the selection. read more

Found myself here looking for a couple used cookbooks I wanted. Let me tell you, this place is a lot bigger than you think a used book store should be. They also have so much more like collectibles, musical equipment and much more. You can definitely kill a few hours here if you aren't careful. So much to see. I did find a couple books I wanted at a good price. I also found a used computer keyboard I needed. The books are somewhat organized but finding specific authors can be challenging. Their book collection is extensive. The staff was friendly and there is plenty of parking. I'll be going back to spend more time. I didn't have a lot of time to spend. Walked in & was like WOW !!! This place has a bit of everything from books to pop-culture items and everything in-between. I was 7th Heaven and browsed for hours. The store was bright and pretty clean, Staff was friendly. The prices were awesome, especially for the used records. We live in the DC area and they ask outrageous prices. Most of the records were in decent shape. My biggest complaint was how some of comic books & records were priced (not the cost) the method - they used printed labels directly on the comic/album. Not sure how you remove without damaging the cover. It was mainly on the albums & bargain comics, but still, it blew my mind as it ruins it. (In my opinion) I was able to find some books I needed, and a train car that I wanted. Like I stated, they have a little of everything that makes life great. read more

I really used to like shopping here, but things have changed. Their prices keep climbing. A used item should not be selling for more than you can purchase it new. I still like perusing the store, but I make sure to check online prices as I shop. I think the DVD prices have gotten really bad. The books are still pretty well priced, but that is probably because the original price is printed right on the cover by the publisher. I have given up on trying to take items in to sell. They do worse than low balling you. I miss the old Edward McKay's. read more

This place has everything I got 3 Funko pops for under 25$ They had vinyls, cds, dvdd, collectible, and electronic. I saw a x-box for 7$ but it was just the box. I will definitely come back when I'm in winston Salem. read more

Wow, they have everything. All things books, music, figurines, dolls and toys even clothes. I could spend hours here. Whenever I get a record player one day, I'm going to spend another few hours looking through their selections of records, which is quite impressive. Aisles and aisles of used books and some new as well. I'm trying to download books more these days but nothing like a good paper hardback. Think I'll come back before a vacation and grab a few. Some of the books were very over priced though, considering the condition of the book. But, those books had been made into movies/shows, so I guess that's why they cost more? I make it a point to stop at McKay's every time I am in Winston Salem. The store has a little something for everyone. When I first went, I was wowed by the selection of used books, games, dvd's, toys, comics, and collectibles. I literally could spend hours in there. During my last visit, I bought so much stuff, i could have used a buggy lol. Although the prices are ok, they are a bit on the high side for used materials. When I got home, I noticed that two of the toys I bought were missing pieces, even though they were set up like they were new and unopened. But it's ok. Wow, what an amazing store. I used to stop by the McKays in Greensboro from time to time, but this was my first visit to the wind to store. Honestly, I was blown away right when I walked in, this place is massive! No matter what you're looking for, I'm willing to bet you'll find it here! Known as a used bookstore, McKay's is so much more than that, selling used book, movies, puzzles, board games, video games (for every system), cds/vinyl, action figures and collectibles, and even music equipment. This store was massive, well organized, and well stocked. Rows and rows and rows of books sorted by genre, same with dvds and video games. Pricing varies a good bit, depending on the condition I'd the item, I assume the supply they have on hand d and other factors. We picked up a few puzzles while visiting, but also passed through other sections, it was hard not to spend more money here than we did. They also buy all of the items listed above...already ready, watched it enough times, don't want it anymore...bring it to them and they'll make you an offer. In the past few years the practices here have become sickeningly greedy. MULTIPLE times I have found DVDs, electronics, games, or books that are sold 5-10 dollars MORE at Mckay's than they can be bought for brand new. A small damaged pocket edition of the Communist Manifesto was priced at $25, and they sell for $5-10 brand new. I attempted to sell a box set of around 50 manga and was offered $20 for them (the current value of them is around $100). I asked how much they would resell them for and they said around $150-200. I'm sorry but this place is just pathetic. Not to mention the store is messy, smells like bacon and sour feet, is hardly alphabetized especially in the CDs, and the quality of the things they accept has tanked. It's not an Edward McKay's anymore; it's a glorified Goodwill. read more

I love McKay's. I typically spend over an hour there, hunting for jewels. It's so much fun. The book selection is massive and the prices are typically $2-$5 per book. You can go home with a stack, and I often do. If TV, movies, or video games are more to your liking, they have those too. Don't just look in the video game section for your system either, have a gander at the "bargain" section and be amazed. I could rave about this place, and I do, often! As someone who would prefer a book over a party, this is where I go to treat myself. read more

This place has some interesting items to peruse, but I would suggest searching online before buying something because you may very well find the same thing for less. Their items aren't always in the best kept condition either. The real gems are kept behind the register. They do have free book bin in the store entrance that may be worth checking out. Also a good place to shop for some ideas or just to browse if you're killing time, but not necessarily the best value. Still, there's always the chance you may find an open box game for $2.50 that you might pick up on an impulse to enjoy. read more

Haven't been in a few years, they really changed the place! I can only speak as a buyer, however, I will bring some books to sell in the next few months and let y'all know. Love the layout, very easy to find what you are looking for! I was looking for a very obscure, kinda pricey, to me, book. I just knew they would not have it, but we were in the area and decided to look, imagine my surprise when they had exactly one copy of what I wanted! Fate? Luck? Who cares, the book was only 2 bucks, it's in great shape and I can start reading immediately! Online the paperback version was $22, this was a hardback for $2, very happy! To my surprise they also have a ton of games and puzzles, I will definitely be back for more shopping and I will bring some stuff in to sell. A staple location in our family traditions. Mkay's is a giant used bookstore. With an amazing amount of bonus content. Records, pokemon and other trading cards (LOTS), antique toys and collectibles, board games, media, retro gaming systems and games, modern gaming systems and games, comic books- and more. Most everything is donated/ used. Most is reasonably priced- though the video game stuff is a little on the higher end of used market prices. This is a store to get lost in, to wander, to browse. While organized, they don't keep a system of "yes we have this book, it's here" but if you're dedicated, you can find gems, and once you learn the system you can usually find something your looking for within a few visits. They are constantly getting in new items so you can come back the next week and see completely different things. Be sure to check out the bargain fiction section, and look all over for hidden gems. I found .95c books last week from a very popular series that I adore! Looks like they had too many copies and decided to discount it. When you exit the store be sure to check out the free bins- sometimes you can find something in there worth grabbing. The bathrooms are usually clean, the checkout process is simple. It's a busy store. It can be overstimulating. But it's always consistent and it's always fun to visit. We have been to most of the MKay's locations, and this one is pretty good. The prices seem to have climbed a bit over the years, understandably. But you can still find a good deal if you learn how to look. This store is a must visit for any fan of books and games and retro vibes. I hope it is around for years to come! read more

This place has a growing fan base. Been driving past it for several years and just recently became a customer. It's like the best of Media Play with a thrift store experience of epic proportions. You walk in on funko pops, games and toys. Books galore and the absolute best children section ever. Music CDs cheap, record section is picked over and scratched - eh, Pokémon cards - all you can stuff in a bag for $10. Video games new and old but all used - varying success but can look for gems. In general just a cool stop and this place is huge. Sold some stuff last visit - got $30 for games and cook books we were going to donate to Goodwill. Hint - sell stuff on weekdays - 20 minute wait - weekend can be a couple hours. They take cash, credit and Apple Pay. read more

I've shopped at various McKays locations over the years, but under the new (current) ownership I feel the stores have gone downhill. My biggest complaint is the pricing. I don't expect to get much for sales - that's the nature of selling used books, and it saves me the hassle of dealing with eBay or whatever. But I find their selling prices to be ridiculous. In many cases I have found books that they try to sell for current new prices (comparing to Amazon). Likewise, I've seen them try to sell things like miniatures for well above current retail prices, and I'm talking about merchandise you can still buy new from other retailers (on my last visit I saw them selling a package of kobold minis for almost $10 when you can buy the exact same product brand-new for $4.50 or less from multiple online retailers. I used to enjoy browsing here and would routinely come home with multiple "scores". Now I go far less often and I seldom buy anything. It's a shame, really. I get that they need to pay their bills, but I feel like they now try to do business by tricking customers who don't think to use their phone to price-shop and just assume that "oh, it's in a used store ... it must be a discount/bargain)." Buyer beware - bring your phone and make sure you're not paying premiums for products you can still buy new at the same price or less from other retailers! That said, you CAN still find deals and I do still go to browse every now and then. read more

I adore McKay's, and the Winston-Salem location is my go-to favorite in the Triad area. I mainly go here for the book selection, although I've definitely picked up a few things from other sections when I visit with my children (figurines, board games, comic books, etc.). I have spent hours in this store without even thinking about it. So many treasures within the shelves. I've found everything from a First Edition of "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote to paperback classics for $0.25. The range is outstanding, and the prices are wonderful. If you're a book lover in the Triad, McKay's is an absolute must. read more

If you like vinyl records, go here first. I like 45 records. They have some going for absolute steals. You never know what's there. I like to check every few months. Their albums can be hot and cold. I've seen some priced way too high. But seen others they were practically giving away. It's like a scavenger hunt. But some days you end up a big winner. They have loads of other media and books. I made the mistake of buying used puzzles here (yes I know "used" implies risk with puzzles)... I bought over 10 Ravensburger puzzles and so far, 5 of them have missing pieces. I have not put them all together yet but at this point, I'm expecting more to have missing pieces. I understand at a thrift store for a $2 puzzle that you get what you get. However, with the price at McKay's, I wrongfully assumed there was integrity with how these puzzles were handled and do not understand charging $11.95 for an incomplete product. I am from a different state and had never been to this store before. Just warning other puzzle enthusiasts to not get your hopes up unless you are local and get your money back. Where has McKay's been all my life? Granted, there was never a location near where I lived until coming to Winston-Salem, but I believe a McKay's should exist in every city. You can spend hours (and I have) browsing through books, vinyls, movies, games and more. It doesn't hurt that you can find virtually brand new items for a fraction of the cost. This new location is much bigger and more convenient, especially when it comes to parking. McKay's is a store where you can buy, sell & trade. Though they have a large inventory of books, they also have plenty of electronics, toys, movies, board games, CD's and more. If the items you want to sell are in great condition I think they make a reasonable offer, either in store credit or cash. I typically choose the cash option but typically you will get 15% more by accepting store credit instead. When it comes to electronics I've seen plenty of phones, tablets, gaming devices and iPods. In the music section you will even find vinyl. This store has some a lot of nostalgia, which I think is pretty cool. Sometimes they have so many books available that there is often a FREE table near the entrance. This is a great place to come for second hand things at a great price. read more

I used to LOVE Mckay's, and while I still do I can hardly justify visiting like I used to. It has grown from a small store with great deals to a bright, bustling, mega shop. Don't get me wrong, I'd still rather buy used and I do still enjoy the occasionally perusal, but why are you selling a used book with a damaged spine for $12 when it retails new at $10? Or a plethora of other examples. Went in for a game boy advance and they were a bit weird about letting me see it. I couldn't even hold it until the purchase was made, and I was prompted to return it if there were any problems. Why couldn't I just decide "this isn't worth the price"? Why make me get home just to find out there is corrosion in the battery port and the screen has lines going through it as it fades in and out?Will be returning product tomorrow. read more

New location is a big improvement over the old store. There's actually parking! Nicely laid out and fairly broad aisles. Prices are SKY HIGH. They're asking easily twice what the same titles sell for online, it's absurd in 2019 that they're pretending the internet doesn't even exist. Trade in allowance is hilariously stingy, and the process is frustrating and opaque. I love browsing in a good used bookstore, there's something to the process that selecting books online just doesn't replicate. Too bad this isn't a good bookstore. read more

Let me first start with a few positives. The prices were great, unfortunately I had to leave my selections behind. I will share on this later. I was looking for a specific book and when I walked into this place it is a bit overwhelming. Especially compared to their old location. I went to the desk where you sell your books to get some information on how it works and if she was able look up a particular book to see if they had it. Unfortunately, they are not able to do this. Which I found surprising considering the review process for them to buy your books. Also seems to be an easy fix with the proper inventory system. Anyway, I digress. The very helpful and polite clerk was able to point me to the section the book COULD be IF they had it. After looking for that needle in the haystack I gave up. I did however find books I was interested in, I suppose that is the reason for them not wanting to share the knowledge of their inventory. After grabbing a few unintended books I walked over to the electronics section which contained everything from guitars to any kind of music and movie player plus some. Kinda reminded me of a pawn shop but cleaner. I did see an acoustic guitar I thought I would try out to buy my son for lessons. $50, not bad. However, no one came to the counter to assist so I moved on. Flipped though some vinyl records that brought back some fun memories and then went to the line. HOLY CRAP! There was about 30+ people in line weaving through what looked like a line for a Disney ride. I thought about bailing out but crud man, I had 3 like new books that would have totaled $6.00. So I got in line......and I waited.....and waited....the Disney lines move quicker. There were 2 clerks that at times had to disappear to do something else, probably sell guitars. After waiting for a period of time and making little to no progress in movement I put my brooks back in the place they SHOULD be so someone else could look for the needle in the haystack. Went in for Xbox One... Got home with it after they told me they test everything that come in the store and the disc Trey wouldn't even open after driving all the way across the city... Also bought a remote for an old Nintendo 64 as well as buying the Nintendo 64 there got home once again the remote did not work for that one. Took the Xbox one back the following day got a different Xbox One. This one was the slim version. Went to cut it on to be told it needed a USB storage device. These people do not check what comes in the door that they take in. That is a total lie when they say that. So have to turn around and go back for the third time all because someone's not doing their job. They need new management amongst a few other things I can say they need. Absolutely ridiculous. Bad bad business just to say the least. Spent close to $600 only to turn into one huge mess. read more

I love the Ed McKay's on Greensboro, so I had high hopes for the Winston location. I must say I was somewhat disappointed. The building had no windows & wasn't appealing upon entry. You have to walk all the way to the far right side of the building to enter. That was very inconvenient since parking was most obvious in the front. The books were on shelves that had misspellings on their category listings & there was very little organization. I don't feel that this location is aesthetically pleasing in the least. I was also less than impressed by their limited true crime section. That being said, I found several books I hadn't seen before & was able to purchase them. I doubt I'll return here & will instead continue to visit my local store. read more
