Went there for surgery on both my ankles at the same time. Let's start with the fact that I now have a copy of my medical records from my stay there. Upon reading them, it's clear that I'm lucky my surgeon knows left from right. He normally doesn't do surgery there and now I know why. My records have several notations stating that they were surgically removing hardware from my LEFT ankle - which they were actually removing it from my RIGHT ankle. And it states that they're installing hardware into my RIGHT ankle - which they were actually doing to my LEFT. In one notation it stated that they " were installing hardware into my right ankle. They were then going to remove hardware from my right ankle. " Wrong. Two lines later it states that they were installing hardware into to my left ankle. Reading these records made me wonder if they were at all coherent at the time they were recorded. This is a hospital. I would expect they would pay attention to those kinds of details especially when surgery is involved. To be clear my surgeon is wonderful and now I know why he doesn't normally operate at St Alexius. The first night I was there the nurse refused to give me my normal blood pressure medication. It was noted in my chart that I take it for a heart condition, and not high blood pressure. My regular cardiologist (who is in Naperville and specializes in my condition) told me that he doesn't care how low my blood pressure is, he wants it as low as it will go. It's to protect my aorta due to a genetic condition I have that killed my father. A condition that is noted on my chart. The nurse would not listen. She said my blood pressure was too low to give me the medication. I agreeed, and stated that if I didn't have this particular condition, I wouldn't need the medication. But I do have the condition and therefore my cardiologist wants my blood pressure as low as possible. She still refused. After complaining that she would be responsible if my aorta tore, she finally called the on-call doc. Again, though my condition is in noted in my chart, along with clearance from my cardiologist (who is the prescribing doctor), the on-call doc still refused to give me the medication. In the morning, I spoke with the day nurse who said she would ensure I got the medication that night. And finally I did. But a hospital that would allow me to go without a medication for a heart condition noted in my chart is clearly due a lack of knowledge, an assumption made, and a serious risk that could have resulted in dire consequences. The next night, a different night nurse refused to give me the Dilaudid pain medication I was on. Mind you, I just had 2 large screws removed from my fibula and tibia in my right ankle. And 4 screws drilled into my left ankle not even 36 hours prior. It was 10/10 pain. I felt like a bear was chewing my bones in both feet. I was in agony for hours, crying, and trying to breathe through the pain all night. The nurse finally offered me a Norco. I took it, desperate. It didn't even dull the pain. I asked for another and she refused. I was doubled over and nauseous from the pain all night. I never even got close to sleeping at all. When the morning nurse came in and saw me panting, exhausted and folded in half grabbing my bandaged ankles crying, she immediately ordered the Dilaudid. She was horrified that I had been in that condition all night long. It's clear the day nurses and doctors were much better trained, and cared more about their patients than the night shift. So a hospital that can't keep left from right straight, refused a prescribed heart medication for a condition noted in the chart, and a night shift that simply doesn't care that a patient is in agony is not a hospital I will return to. I advise you to go anywhere else you can. Worst experience I've had at a hospital. read more

I went to Ascension's St Alexius Hoffman Estates hospital in Sept 2025. I had a heart attack and they did a great job in the E.R., I want to say that up front. But I can only give 1 star because of how they addressed my needs as a disabled person. That weekend, my aides were unable to help (one was out of town, the other's car was in the shop). I am extremely isolated due to disability, but the nursing staff was apathetic to my needs. The nurse attending to me sent my scripts to a mail order pharmacy (not mine and I had to spend a week to get removed from their system).The nurse also didn't know the hospital provided rides home. The nurse and charge nurse were untrained in how to work with disabled people who face challenges upon release. Even after I told the nurse how to request a car, she ordered the car to arrive in an hour even though I said I wasn't sure I could be ready by then. I was right, but no one canceled the ride. So the driver arrived at the hospital and was sent away. Also, this hospital seems to have no way to provide a couple of days of medication under any circumstances. They told me it is illegal for them to do so. I am checking on that with the Governor's office. I did reach out to the hospital (Patient Relations and Risk Management) after my experience. It took over a week and an escalation to the head of the Risk Management to get a call back. They promised follow-up, but none was received until I escalated again. I did get a call from the head of that ward's nursing staff, and he felt he had addressed it with the nurse. But he also said I could meet with some people to look at how they could serve people with disabilities more effectively. I never heard from the hospital again about the issue, so their level of concern for disabled patients (perhaps all patients) is clear to me now. Though I appreciate their talking to the nurse who attended to me, the issue is systemic. They have not addressed the overarching issue. For example, on a visit to the ER in April 2025, I passed out waiting before they rushed me to ICU. Once transferred to the general ward, I encountered a nurse who vehemently argued with me regarding dosage of insulin. It took 20 minutes back-and-forth, for her to call the Dr to confirm the dose. It turned out the dose she was about to inject was double the proper dose. I was grateful she finally checked, but horrified I had to argue with her. I was so upset I had the door closed and called a friend to help calm me down. Someone, I'm thinking that nurse, came and stood right outside the door until my call was through. I know because the door has about an inch or more room under it and I could see the shadow of their feet near my door. They stayed until moments after I hung up. That same ward had several people with dementia on it. Bed alarms rang regularly when these patients would try to get out of bed. I would guess they were disoriented being in an unfamiliar place at night. One patient apparently wanted to eat after food service had ended. I only know this because that same nurse spoke sternly (in my opinion even yelled at times) at the patient telling them they couldn't have any food. My mom had dementia, and if anyone had ever treated her the way that nurse treated her patient, I'd have had her moved out of that hospital right away. I also have back problems and live in severe chronic pain, but on the visit in April they put me in a room with a broken bed. The bed was tilted causing my pain to flair. I expressed this after discharge to my pain doctor who feels this increased pain will last at least six months to a year. I wish these were the only issues I have had with this hospital, but it's not. Years ago I was there and they sent a physical therapist in to work with me. But I didn't feel well. I was dizzy, achy, in severe pain and nauseous. I told the therapist more than once I didn't feel I could exercise. She insisted and put a strap around me to make me sit up and exercise. I tried. After she left I vomited. The nurse came in and saw the situation, but left me with vomit on the floor and in my bed for two hours. Horrific experience. The doctor came in later and said in addition to the condition which brought me to the hospital I had the flu. At least then someone I expressed concerns to after discharge was willing to discuss it and follow-up with me. No one has been willing to address my recent concerns as a systemic issue. Then there's the 6 hours I spent sorting out the billing, merging accounts because they admitted me under the wrong name, etc. Sadly, I have no options to avoid this hospital which are not overly expensive for me on my fixed income. It will take time before I will dial 9-1-1 again. To me, odds are too high I will receive care from someone who doesn't understand or care about people with disabilities. I cannot express strongly enough that this hospital is dangerous for people with disabilities. Avoid it if you can. read more

Emergency room is not recommended. Go elsewhere! Rude intake person! I was taken to a room after waiting hours for any care. Guy comes in with no badge and says his name is Josh and I'm your nurse. I was putting on a gown and he walked in on me without any announcement too soon! Creepy! I got dressed and left! Went there recently for a day surgery procedure. All staff were really friendly (nurses, security, cafeteria stall, doctors...).

I was sent to the ER for low oxygen and was admitted for Covid pneumonia for 5 days. Care was not the greatest. Since I had Covid I had to be isolated and it was hard to get any nurses to bring me food or come in to answer my questions. One morning my IV was leaking all over the floor and my breathing specialist had to call for a nurse to clean it up and put it back in. Another day it took them over an hour to realize I never got my food. Even tho I was calling asking for it every 30-40 mins. Another time my nurse would come in give me medicine and then leave before I could ask for water read more

Improvement would include actual Doctors finding out what happened, what injuries were sustained and someone who graduated medical school treating you, the patient, like you matter rather than giving a couple sleeping pills and allowing the patient's father, to hijack my physical body, make his own diagnoses and having me driven miles away to a mental institution. I'm a Northwestern graduate, something very serious happened to me, where I was dizzy, confused, off balance, couldn't think properly bc I felt like my brain was in a fog. This went on the entire time I was in Streamwood. You let my father diagnose me as a poor, homeless drug addict and I was sent on a merry-go-round of mental facilities based on my father's opinion (he is a doctorate of law NOT medicine.) He's in his 80s. As far as I'm concerned, St. Alexis is not a hospital. You made absolutely no attempt to treat me. You had me rolled to the nurses desk, gave me a couple sleeping pills but took my father's word (who is not altogether there). I had no constitutional rights. My apartment and everything in it, is gone. Thank God I'm not near Streamwood anymore. Apparently, no one there has ever studied what a "stroke" is and putting people in mental institutions or handing someone's body to a man in his 80s, is a far cry of even adequate medical care. read more

My mom was sent to ER from a rehab facility. I am her POA if her health Care. When I called the woman I spoke to was nice and took my phone number and told me they would call me with an update. That was at 10:07 pm. At 2:00 am I received no call. I found out from another family member that she had been taken back to the rehab center. I as her POA should have been called back regardless of them notifying another family member. Not happy with the communication skills at this hospital. read more

The absolute worst ER experience I've ever had. I was sent there from the behavioral health hospital with extremely high blood pressure. I went in and said they sent me over for medical clearance and blood pressure medication. They took it in triage and once I got a bed they didn't check again for 2.5 hours. The unit didn't appear busy. The nurses were sitting and talking at the station. I kept asking for blood pressure medication. They tried to give me a sedative then finally took my BP it was 199/114. Since they couldn't get an IV on me they just said oh well I guess you'll just get oral medications which was fine if it worked. They waited an hour and my BP was just as high. So they gave me a sedative and finally a blood pressure pill that did nothing. I was concerned I was going to have a stroke. I'm an RN and I felt completely unsafe there. I tried calling patient relations then the nursing supervisor who never called me back. Finally a nurse came in put an IV in and gave me blood pressure medication which finally helped. This is unacceptable. Also they send me to a behavioral unit in the ED and didn't explain why. They took all my belongings and even tried to get me to take my pants off too which I refused. No one explained anything to me. I was literally only there to get my blood pressure under control. Finally at discharge they gave me no paper work or follow up. I tried calling a few days after my experience to speak to Brandon from patient relations. I believe I left at least 3 messages and still no call back. I'm considering reporting them to the IDPH. I recommend you stay away from this ED and go anywhere else. read more

Went to the E.R. for ear pain and saw Dr. Kmetuk: Dr. K", D.O. She diagnosed my problem and prescribed the proper medication for my ear. She was very professional and caring and it was the best experience I've had in an Emergency Room. Thanks again Dr. K. and staff! You guys' rock!!! read more

My husband and I see Dr. Janice Ko. She is our GP. Husband found her first, back in 2015. When my GP retired and I needed a new one, he recommended that I see her too. One of the best medical decisions I have ever made. Her office is in Building 3 on the third floor. She has a wonderful bedside manner and easily puts her patients at ease. The only negative comment I can make about her is that she is usually running behind schedule, but I believe that is because she has a full patient load and she takes time to truly understand what the problem might be. Given my experience with her, I think that is something I am willing to accommodate. St. Alexius as a facility is top notch and newish. I am told THIS is where you want to go to have a baby. read more

I had to take my to the ER last Tuesday. Everyone was friend, busy night in the ER. Doctor recommended that my mom see a specialist. Someone called the very next day, Wednesday, and told my mom that they will call her back again for her appointment date. She's been calling everyday, and they keep telling her someone will call her back. It's now Sunday, and no one has returned my mom's call. The doctor that saw her that night told us to not put this appointment off. If you can avoid this hospital, do so. I've had bad experience here myself, when I lived in Hoffman estates. read more

I was never handed an identification band and no one noticed until trying to scan medication. While giving me my medication I heard the nurse say "we're probably not going to run lines on everyone because it's pretty busy- unless it's critical" meanwhile the female nurse didn't seem to comfortable with that statement. Further more Considering my triage was done In front of over 30 plus other patients, and forced to talk about why I'm here in front of others. Only to be told I'm waiting for a bed and the doctor comes out to the WAITING ROOM and speaks to me. No confidentiality or privacy. Came in with extreme medication reaction with rash and chest pains and 2 hours later still waiting to be seen. Heard them mention just giving me a medicine in the waiting room- which they did. Nothing is done here right. I watched a lady brought in via ambulance transferred from a stretcher to a wheelchair and sat in this same waiting room. Thank GOODNESSI remember most of it and will spend another 30-60 minutes typing it because it WAS extremely important. But here's today's addition: It is cooler outside than in Building 3. I was in 3 rooms running errands in 2 and in the bathroom and it literally felt like the heat was on. Started sweating profusely. Found the OLD one but it's under "Amita Health St. Alexius" (I assume it will eventually change to Ascension or whatever making it even harder to write reviews so I am pasting my review from the "Amita..." page): Used to be 5 stars. Having been a patient for decades, this place has rapidly gone down hill. Don't take patients based on severity of needs in the ER. You could literally die there waiting. Woman came in with asthma attack, I could hear her struggling to breathe and they left her in a wheelchair wheezing, coughing and gagging for air for quite a few hours. And doctors don't diagnose problems properly at all. Been misdiagnosed QUITE a few times. And if you complain about the wait time or how you can't breathe they will keep letting you sit in the ER waiting room or put you in the psych ward to see a doctor (and maybe a psychiatrist if you complain too much. Know this FIRST hand). Nurses are rude and doctors make drastic errors which almost cost me my life. So...update... was in again. Literally told that they won't try to figure out the cause of my issue. Rather, keep me overnight hooked up to saline solution for observation. I literally asked "you won't run any tests to figure out what is happening?!" And they said no. So the point of staying overnight is what? They did run standard bloodwork which always comes back the same. Essentially told I would get water overnight and be sent home in the morning. Yes I have a PCP. Trying to figure this out. But I thought when a person goes in, in dire shape, you try to actually diagnose an issue? It seems like if it's too complicated, pass the buck--in this case the patient is left with no answers. And this is the closest hospital when you call 911 Yet my friend gets admitted for a UTI, for DAYS, and, without disclosing my condition, my life could be on the line, and you won't run tests. One of the worse Emergency rooms to come to. Absolute garbage waiting times, it's funny how you can show up at 10 check in and then still be in the ER waiting room for 4 hours. There's no communication with patients, they "select" who they wanna see which is only gonna cause blowback, I wouldn't recommend coming here even if you were dying, they'd probably have you sit and bleed out in the waiting room before they see you. 0/5 #legally breaking laws read more

I had a procedure done at the St Alexius procedure clinic, today. Where to start, the registration process sucks. You get in 1 line, register, go to someone else to either get a pager to get called up, again or go to another person to fill out info on an ipad, then get behind someone to hand in the ipad. When I told the girl, I registered online, she said they didn't get the info. & had to donit all over. Why bother doing it. There was 1 person at the registration desk, just 1. That is for every patient coming into the hospital for anything. There were so many people all over waiting. Next up is the nurse in the procedure clinic, she was awful! Asking me personal health questions thru the pulled curtain. Loud enough for everyone to hear. I asked her to open the curtain. How stupid & rude. She tried to start the iv, it was so painful, after it was placed, she kept moving it around. I told her it hurt. She said it is not supposed to hurt & took it out. Wth! Then she had to do it all over, again. Left with a blood pool area under the skin on my arm. Never had that happen to me. She was sloppy and sooo inefficient. I answered the same question 4-5 times. The girls in the procedure room were a bit rude, too. I was getting uncomfortable laying face down on the table, waiting for the doctor, 1 of them asked if I was all right, I was answering her & she stops listening to me to chit chat with another nurse. They really acted liked they didnt care how I was feeling. I told them how nervous I was, zero response. They were like robots. I had the same procedure done at Glen Oaks hospital in Glendale Hts, IL, they were all fabulous. Step it up, St Alexius! read more

For those of you that are addicted enough to yelp to actually look up a review of the hospital before going .. let me lay this on you. Unless you've partially severed your head due to an overly large zombie bite and will come back as the unruly undead unless treated in the next few minutes... it may be good to steer away from here. Why? Well, my first reason of course.. sticks out hugely. The night ER doctor on call who resembles an uncanny resemblance to Steven King (I actually thought he had been "studying for a movie", unfortunately this is not the case), and just seems to point to book of random 1800's diseases for diagnosis. I came in with bad hives with slight trouble breathing about seven years ago. It was *due to a very clear allergic reaction*. I had been taking a new script I had never taken before. This clown takes one look at me, and tells me I have.. Wait for it... "Scarlet Fever!" Yeah. No joke. He goes onto explain that he sees cases of this every week. It couldn't possibly be what I thought it was, etc. etc. The scary thing was the student doctor just nodded his head and agreed. Apparently you can pay for your medical school at St. Alexius by giving your brain to science. Early withdraw optional for deferred payment now available with a few "unnoticeable" small lobotomies required. Yeah. When I went to my family doctor the next day.. (and was nearly swollen twice my size...eek!) it was exactly what it was. By the next day there was a massive difference. Two days later, hardly noticeable until it was gone. Had I trusted myself into their care, I'd either be the size of Violet Beauregarde after she ate the gum.. or I'd be teets up. The rather frightening thing is after seven years,. " The Steven King" doctor is still there. This is also the place where my son was born. This is what happens when one is guilted into choosing a hospital close to ones mother.. . The L&D nurses? Suck suck suck. One could probably find more warmth and compassion in Ann Coulter (who's as cold as a penguin's ass) then these women. Honestly, it felt like I was in one of those skeevy prison female movies they show late time on skin-a-max, but I was really * pregnant . The only reason this place gets two stars is because of their Mother/Baby unit which was fantastic. They are "baby friendly", which means they have Lactation Consultants on payroll, and they promote breastfeeding. Hurray. The only downside is they encourage you to comeback, and call them with any questions you may have when you leave. Good , right? Fooolll you! If you call for the sake of hilarity, you are told..."Oh, well, you should come down to the hospital in person." Also, a friendly note to my moms out there. This hospital at last check will not give out their C/s rate (which is not great) or VBAC rate. According to them they "Do not support VBAC, but will possibly allow VBAC" Lets hear it for unneeded abdominal surgery because of possible liability. read more

This review is for the Labor and Delivery, Mothers & Babies, and Lactation Consultant. Hands down best experience for a first time mommy. The nurses in the labor and delivery were super attentive and caring. They treat you like family rather than just as a patient. The Moms and Babies nurses were extremely helpful with teaching new parents how to change, feed and care for your newborn. I would highly recommend this hospital for your labor and delivery! read more

In an unpleasant time this has been the most pleasant experience one could hope for. Doctors are one thing but they are not what makes a hopsital. The nurses, PCTs, orderlies, cooks, and other staff are the backbone of any hospital and this one is amazing. I will not bore you with the nature of my family's experiences here, but suffice it to say that they are multiple and varied. I have no family that works here nor are we affliated with the catholic faith so I'm not schilling for them. We all choose our doctors wisely and we should do the same with a hospital. This place has been an excellent resource every time. Thanks to all who work there. read more

I had a swollen foot due to a bug bite and went to urgent care by my work that gave me an antibiotic and Prednisone. Later that night I had difficulty breathing and my arms, legs and back had little tiny blisters appearing. I went to the emergency room and waited there for quite awhile. I kept coughing and had difficulty gasping for air and nurses just literally looked at me as I was on a cot in a hallway. Nobody asking if I was ok. I finally saw a dr that said the blisters were probably from rubbing up against a plant but didn't look at my leg or back and wanted to prescribe me Benadryl. I told her I'm allergic because it makes my tongue swell, dizziness and nausea. She didn't believe me and kept insisting that was the only thing. Said she could give something to offset the nausea. I told her I used an Epi pen already for the big bite on my foot and she stated that wasn't a smart thing to do even though I was advised by a dr to do so. I have Epi pens because I am allergic to Benadryl. Then kept insisting on Benadryl with no other option calling me a liar. I was mortified because I think I know what I'm allergic to. I kept asking if there was a cream of something else and then she suggested Benadryl again and then antibiotics and prednisone. I finally got up and walked out because we were talking in circles. She never asked me what other medications I was on and when the guy asking for my insurance also asked me what kind of dog bit me, I had it because I never said I got bit by a dog. This dr had zero listening skills, zero integrity, zero compassion, zero professionalism and literally sucked as a human being and shouldn't be working with any human interaction whatsoever. I went the Sherman Hospital after who realized my meds I was taking were causing me to wheeze and ended up draining fluid from my foot and I had a fever. My back has cellulitis. I'm glad it wasn't a life or death situation otherwise this review wouldn't be written. So if you want to feel berated and bullied by a dr. then you should go there! read more

The good followed by the scary. I had shoulder surgery this Spring at St. Alexius. All went well, but, that evening after being discharged home I did not feel well. Shortness of breath. There was a stated risk of post surgical clots so my Wife and I went to the St. Alexius ER. The impacts were visible - tough walking/standing, sweating, etc. The ER registration was a nightmare. There was no place to sit and provide information and I was not doing well. Even though I'd earlier in the day provided my complete medical history, prescriptions, past surgeries to St. Alexius's day surgery department and despite the fact that I was having problems standing we were again supplying the same information. Staff explained that they were on a different system. Seriously? I instruct Master's level IT courses for a state University and St. Alexius' lack of system integration should have been resolved before implementing their Electronic Health Record Systems. "Time is money" in an ER but it is also time to treatment effects outcomes. Next was to be a blood draw. The first room used for this had not been cleaned since the last use. There was still used test equipment out and a vial and swab on the floor. At this point they only wanted a blood test so there was no need to try and start and IV. I mentioned this can be a challenge on me as I have terrible veins. How bad? Loyola put a mediport in just for blood draws. I asked if they could use the mediport (requires a 3/4" non coring needle) and two applications of an antiseptic prep. No, the ER/Hospital did not have access to one. These needles are common stock items - I've volunteered in ERs and Ambulatory Care departments at Alexian Brothers Medical Center and maintained stockroom and cart inventories. After looking at both arms and giving up the nurse, who wanted to start an IV, instead of just do the blood tests, gave up on my arms and then started on my hands. At this point I asked if they could use ultrasound to find a vein. Something I've had to have done in the past and that is common practice in some hospital. "No, they did not have access to an ultrasound". Really? In a community hospital the size of St. Alexis there is not one 3/4" length non coring needle not an ultrasound machine? After sticking and digging I finally told the nurse to stop. While Staff will have a procedure in place to only allow a staff member to stick you so many times this really just causes some staff members to stick and then move the needle around like they were blindly reaching for something that had rolled under a bed. The nurse stated that the radiologist would then do it when available. We returned to the ER waiting room. After an hour we left the ER waiting room. Why? If a person has a blood clot there is what is sometimes referred to as the "Golden Hour" to begin addressing it. "TPA" - a clot buster is injected to dissolve the clot and stop damage. By this time if I indeed have a blood clot lodged in my lung - pulmonary embolism - which I've had before and had told them so or was having a stroke there is only so much time to act. ER staff needs to be able to perform, particularly when they are basic functions such as blood draws, or they need to have equipment and processes in place that enables them. St. Alexius did not have integrated electronic health record systems (EHRs), they had poor housekeeping in areas where blood is drawn, and they had staff that was incapable of performing basic medical tests. I went here for back surgery. The facility is clean. My Doctor did a great job but it was the staff in recovery that made it one of the worst experiences. If you enjoy people asking you ambiguous questions over and over again this is your place to go. If you don't mind that none of them communicate with each other, if you don't mind that they will treat you like a dog, then this is the place to go. I am continuously disappointment with the amount of time it takes to register for a simple blood draw at their lab. It took 40minutes just to register and then another 20 minutes to wait for the lab. AND they require a $50 deposit for fees.....this is without looking up what your co-pay is! read more

Ridiculous wait times on a Tuesday night with a mostly empty emergency room. We waited 1.5 hours to get in. If a hospital cannot provide emergency services, they should close their e.r.
