I first stopped by Double Vision Acres over the summer just to check it out and was impressed with their farm store and selection of butchered meats. But when I saw they were hosting an event called Flannel Fest, I knew I had to make a return trip. I mean... free parking, free admission, free live music, and free petting zoo access if you wore flannel? Challenge accepted. I got there around 1:30 p.m. and found plenty of parking in the field just a short walk from all the action. The parking attendant was super helpful and friendly -- always a good sign. The place was hopping, with families, couples, and plenty of folks in flannel soaking up a perfect sunshiney fall day. Cody Ross Smith was performing live, the music was great, and the overall vibe was exactly what you want from a fall festival -- laid-back, cheerful, and full of small-town charm. Fire pits were burning, hay bales had been turned into makeshift couches, and kids were running around between the petting zoo and the play areas, having a fantastic day! The farm store was open too, selling baked goods, meats, and handmade soaps and lotions. It was the kind of afternoon that makes you wish fall could stick around forever. Huge kudos to Double Vision Acres for not just running a farm, but building a sense of community around it. Well-organized, family-friendly, and totally worth the drive. If you're looking for a place that serves up wholesome small-town fun with a side of s'mores and livestock -- this is it. The store is huge and just feels more complete than the store in Boiling Springs. Their meat department has a great selection and I would recommend anyone looking for steak to go here for quality. Yes, their "deals" often involve buying meat in bulk, but even for the extra dollar a pound to buy it without the deal, you get what you pay for. Their ground sirloin is out of this world for things like hamburger helper or tacos! The soups are another highlight - it's like walking into my grandma's kitchen! Homemade style soups are always available on their hot bar, and some are prepackaged cold. Our favorites are their Corn Chowder, Lobster Bisque, and their Corn and Shrimp Chowder. The only downside is the price. You get it by the pound, and if you use the big container, you could easily spend almost $10. That's a bit steep for maybe two portions, but the quality really is amazing. They run great deals on things like frozen pizza! Their pies and baked goods are decent quality too, though I'd recommend getting these early in the day as many are made overnight. Fresh in the morning doesn't always mean fresh in the evening! Cat food and litter is reasonable as well. Two 20 pound containers of litter is maybe a dollar or two more than one 40 pound container at Target or Walmart, so it really isn't worth the drive when we can just grab this at Karns. North Middleton got a great boost when Karns brought groceries back to this side of town!
