I've probably driven by Southside Deli 1,000 times and never knew what the building was -- until a Facebook post about their Oktoberfest specials stopped me in my tracks. A quick search later and I realized it was only 20 minutes from home. I immediately grabbed a friend and requested a dinner date for the item that caught my eye: the Bratwurst mit Kraut -- bratwurst cooked with apples and sauerkraut, served on a pretzel bun and topped with even more kraut, with a side of German potato salad ($12). But I'll admit... I was also eyeing their Obatzda Burger with Oktoberfest beer cheese. Feeling bold, I asked our waitress if I could order their regular Pretzel Braid appetizer ($9) but swap the usual cheez-wiz and spicy mustard for that dreamy Oktoberfest beer cheese instead. She paused, smiled, wrote it down, and said, "that sounds really good!" Bless the chef for making my pretzel + beer cheese fantasy come true. The pretzel braid was warm, soft, and perfectly salty, and that beer cheese was the real MVP -- smooth, melty, not too hot, and with a proper beer-cheese finish. When the bratwurst plate arrived, it was a showstopper. Juicy brat, tangy kraut piled high, and tucked inside a pretzel roll that was soft but sturdy enough to hold it all together. No mustard needed! The German potato salad surprised me, though -- I'm used to the warm version, so finding it chilled caught me off guard. But honestly? It worked. Perfectly seasoned, just wet enough to be salad without drifting into soupy territory. I demolished both. Dessert was impossible to skip after hearing our waitress describe it to another table. We shared both the Apple Caramel Crumb Cake and the Lemon Blueberry Mascarpone Cake. The crumb cake was served warm with ice cream, loaded with thick, crunchy topping that didn't rely on chopped nuts (bonus points!). The mascarpone cake was light and buttery with the perfect balance of lemon and blueberry -- like saying goodbye to summer and hello to fall all in one dessert sitting. Southside Deli's Oktoberfest menu blew me away, and if their everyday offerings are anywhere close, I've been seriously missing out. Add in free parking, a convenient location, and plenty of seating, and it's an easy go-to spot for lunch or dinner. Southside is officially on my food rotation radar now! read more

Got food to go. Didn't come with any napkins or utensils. Got Italian hoagie with side salad and Philly cheesesteak with onion rings. I know what a good Philly cheesesteak is and this is NOT it. It was dry and bland. Not enough cheese. Onion rings sucked, bland again and one onion ring was thick because of too much batter. The batter part was so dense. The Italian hoagie wasn't terrible but not great. Really hard to eat cause the tomato is just on top and not in. The salad was okay but didn't have fork to eat it with. read more

Stopped in as I had a hankerin' for my favorite Southside item - the 'Meatlovers Sub' ..now called the 'Combo Sub' - was unusually busy for a Tuesday night! I discovered that it was the first day of their full bar that they've been readying for the past few months. I did not partake, but in addition to beer taps, I spied a selection liquor as well - which will add a new facet to dining here. As always, service on this night was awesome. It's obvious from the other reviews posted here that the Southside Deli is frequented by local diners who rave about the quality and quantity of the food. The ambience is very casual and the menu puts an emphasis on simple, casual, easy-to-share, and made-to-order -- such as hot dogs; beef, veggie, grilled chicken burgers; unique sandwiches; salads; and baskets with a variety of fried foods like chicken fingers, buffalo wings, or onion rings. Unfortunately, our visit was very disappointing due to issues with the service. The restaurant was packed when we stopped in for a late lunch, but were seated right away and handed menus. Our server was busy closing out other tables as the lunch rush was ending, so it took a while for her to come by for our beverage and food order. Although the restaurant was quickly emptying out, our order took about half an hour until the server brought it out to the table. We immediately noticed that our server made a couple of key mistakes with our order - my dining companion's father ordered a grilled tilapia fish sandwich ($12.50) and wound up with a fried haddock fish sandwich instead; I requested no cheese on my pulled pork BBQ sandwich ($12) and wound up with two slices of cheddar cheese that I had to pull off the sandwich myself. We were unable to get our server's attention to ask her to remedy the situation or to refill our beverages once she dropped off the check with our meal and none of the other servers bothered to make eye contact when I waved at them. Sandwiches come with a small bag of locally-produced potato chips; upgrade to a side of your choice - fries, tots, cole slaw, house or caesar salads - for an additional charge. My dining companion was underwhelmed with her 1/2 tuna sandwich and cup of tomato basil soup ($11). This level of service isn't acceptable and its definitely something to keep in mind if anyone in your dining party has food allergies or dietary restrictions. I doubt we'll give them another chance on our next trip through Carlisle. read more

There was a small group of us. Four adults and two children. Everyone was happy. I had the in-house made roast beef on a French Dip. Let's say it was enough for two people. And it was delicious. The aus jus had a nice flavor. The Amoroso roll was on point. I asked for a side of tater tots. Crunchy and seasoned nicely. My wife had the Buffalo Chicken Salad. Chicken and sauce were nice. Was almost like a chopped salad. All of the food came out as ordered, fast, and delicious. Service was great and with a smile. Bathroom was spotless. And that means it is a well-run restaurant. We'd never been to Southside Deli so we weren't sure what to expect, but we'd heard good things. Our food was great but three groups came in after us and all got menus, drinks, food, checks, and change before we did. That was disappointing. We also had to ask for drink refills. Our server was friendly just seemed to want to wait on other tables more than ours and we weren't sure why. There was another server who brought our food and whom we asked for refills so maybe they were undecided who should wait on us. Whatever, it was strange, but our food was great. We didn't get charged for our drinks, either, and when we pointed out the discrepancy on the bill, the server told us, and we're not making this up, that she "didn't see the point in charging us." We weren't sure why we weren't charged: we don't usually drink soda but having just moved heavy furniture, we decided to indulge and our soft drinks were great. Sometimes they're flat but not here. We just wanted refills without having to ask. We will go back and hope for a better experience but the good-tasting food made up for the wonky service. read more

Disappointed in my Reuben sandwich. I've always bragged to other people how great it was at the Southside Deli. It used to be thick with a lot of dressing. This time it wasn't as thick and dry. The waitress was very good and always checking on us. Not sure if I'll try a Reuben again. read more

This is a favorite place of my son who is a student at Dickinson College. He's had takeout before and this was his first time eating at the restaurant. He recommended The Riddle which is egg and cheese breakfast sandwich with a fried chicken breast and boom boom sauce. We also added bacon to that delicious concoction. We had an order of tater tots. Everything was delicious!! They also have a dessert case. Our server Samantha, who was very friendly and helpful, recommended the Salted Caramel Vanilla Crunch Cake. It was awesome!! My mom and I each got a sandwich and shared half, so I tried The Rachel and the Henry. My sandwich, the Henry, had a very juicy crispy chicken breast breaded with mayo, cheese, red peppers, spring mix, and bacon. My mom had the Rachel on rye, which was perfectly made! Had lunch here today, with a friend. Our first time here since it changed hands. We were very happy with the food and the fast service. Got here about 11:30 on a weekday. We were seated right away and got our food pretty quickly. We both had the chicken bacon ranch on ciabatta. Delicious. She had slaw and I had the seasoned fries. We split a piece of carrot cake. We ordered subs from South Side Deli today. My husband went & pick them up. Not one employee was wearing a mask. So these asshats are breathing all over my food they're making for me. I absolutely refused to eat mine. If I would have picked up the delivery I would have refused it & walked out. Absolutely discussing! Will never eat there again. Shame on South Side Deli! Called & asked to speak to the manager. The girl that answered the phone told me they were to busy to come to phone, so I began to telling her what issue was & she freaked out and handed the phone to the someone else who informed me he didn't have time for me & hung up on me.
