I am partially disabled. The ramp with only a slight incline and sturdy handrails maid it simple to enter. Unfortunately, the restroom is not handicapped equipped & the chairs at the tables are a little high. However, the food makes it worth the visit. Just the Mac & cheese alone is so good it's worth the trip. The baked beans are also excellent & the ribs are good. The servers are friendly & helpful. Took my brother to buy a car and we decided to stop here for lunch. The place was small, only two or three parking spots, though you could have parked across the street. Initially I was disappointed as the meats I really wanted were sold out. Decided to go with sliced brisket and their take on what I would say was like a broccoli slaw with a mustard style dressing. Nice service and low key atmosphere, and clearly returning customer. Up in Smoke BBQ is LEGIT! We visited for the first time and with all Central PA BBQ places I do not set high expectations as most fall short. Up in Smoke exceeded my expectations and is probably one of the best BBQ places in the HBG area! We tried the family sampler for 2-3 people, which included: ¼ lb. beef brisket, ¼ lb. pulled pork, 2 smoked sausages, 1/2 rack of ribs, two sides (mac and cheese/beans) and cornbread! All this for around $50. Good BBQ costs money and I have no problem paying $$ for solid BBQ. The brisket was tender and juicy, pork was good, the smoked sausages were incredible, and I thoroughly enjoyed the flavor/doneness of the ribs. The sides were very flavorful. The interior of the restaurant is welcoming and smells delicious! The service was spot on and since it was my first visit, the employee/owner took their time talking about the menu and making sure I was taken care of. I liked how he sent a sample of each of their homemade BBQ sauces home for us to try. Good BBQ is sometimes hard to find, but Up in Smoke has it down pat! read more

As I sat and ate my food, I overheard the owner of this restaurant go on a tirade about "niggers". I believe he was on the phone with someone in the back of the restaurant. I was astounded that the owner of any business with many black customers would have the audacity to be that egregious about screaming the word "nigger" over and over again loud enough for anyone to hear it. Yes, Mr. McMullan I am black and know what that word means. Although we hear this word all the time as black Americans, the level of hate in his voice was nauseating. This is a very good spot, but when you get something bad, it is difficult to go back. After many good times enjoying they're meats & the well crafted sides they offer, they had a miss. Grabbed the usually fantastic turkey last time I went. Instead of being moist, juicy & really delicious, it was the dried out end & it was really hard to chew. So I trashed it. We had great takeout from Up in Smoke BBQ last night! So happy to have a good pit so close to home, which to the point, it is now located on Mountain Road in Linglestown. Ordering was easy, can be done online or by phone. B had the Texas Crippler, pulled pork and brisket on cornbread topped with sweet and spicy slaw. M opted for the Smoke Special, choice of meat over cornbread topped with Mac and cheese. I (of course) always have ribs on my first visit, and these were not disappointing, tender and toothy with a slightly sweet slightly peppery rub. The slaw is as advertised, sweet and saucy. The baked beans are house made of four kinds of beans in a nice sauce. Takeout offers are picked up inside at the counter. They do have dine in, about half a dozen tables in a nice, clean space. There is a refrigerator case next to the counter which last night had ribs, bacon, and huge tomahawk steaks for sale. Staff is friendly and helpful. Covid protocols were being observed. My friends and I got a two meat platter with 2 sides but the owner was kind enough to bring out extra small sides so we could try everything. Food was excellent. This has to be one of the best BBQ places I've ever been to, and I'm from the Nashville area so I've had my fair share of the such. I had gotten a bacon brisket cheddar melt and it has to be the best brisket sandwich I've ever had out and it's to the point where I ate literally everything in the sandwich, and it had jalapeño slices which I usually don't like but they were perfectly incorporated with everything that made it heaven between a bun. We stopped in here on a Friday evening. We were immediately met at the counter. First let me say I'm not a fan of brisket. Well now I am, they gave us both a nice chunk to try. I was amazed how juicy and tender it was. Then they gave us a slice of Turkey to try. The only thing I've had close to that was in Kansas and this was better. I really wanted to give this place a better review. Fast courteous service, clean facility. The BBQ was just not that good, the ribs were a bit dry. The coleslaw was nothing than bitter red cabbage, carrots and their homemade sauce. The beans were OK, but not what we were used to by far. Love this place and heading there for lunch today. Been several times and decided I owed a review. Take out is always individually butcher wrapped so it stays warm longer. Beans have a nice flavor. Cole slaw is a bit spicy which I love, and NOT your traditional grocery store cream base slaw. My favorite is the brisket. It's not the traditional wet/dry brisket you think of or get other places, but everything is moist and tender and great flavor. I actually love it without any sauce. Ribs, pork, chicken, all great too. And while you are there be sure to take home some of their smoked bacon. Nice meaty sliced thick bacon. Mmmmm.... You can't go wrong. A little on the higher price range, but like they say, you get what you pay for, and I'll gladly pay a little more for better quality. read more

Is zero stars an option? I didn't get to even try the food. They had a tent set up at a food truck festival and as soon as the weather got a bit questionable, the guy says "I can't serve in this!" We all think he's joking as that's just stupid. Two minutes later he's serious and closes up shop.
