I'd like to think I've done my fair share of indulging in beer tastings, festivals, tours and what not. But I've never, ever done a pub crawl. My point of reference has always been the one I have seen during First Friday. You know the one, the one with women in tutus and dudes in, tutus running down St. Mary's Street. I imagine with all the barhopping from checkpoint to checkpoint sooner or later someone is gonna ralph all over a sidewalk. However, I was talked into doing the one St. Arnold Brewery had put on recently as a promotional event. Five check in points for a pint glass created specifically for this event. You are given five locations to choose in any order: Stella Public House, Frank's, B&D's, The Friendly Spot and your final destination Alamo Street; a punchout card and roughly three hours to have it all filled. Pretty straightforward, right? Well. A couple of things happened along the way while checking into places. One issue the flow of pub crawlers was not congruent with stay time. For example the Stella Public House was maxed out to capacity, due to the traffic of participants. I did skip it opting for Frank's a few yards down but nonetheless the results were the same. The thinking is that you had to have a drink at each point, which some people did. I must reiterate you don't have to drink anything at any of the locations to participate, you just have to have your card punched by a rep. Moving from the direction of the Blue Star Complex towards the area of the Friendly Spot the crowds either tapered off or dissipated. For example B&D's was hours away from the mad rush. And The Friendly Spot had plenty of seating. In my opinion I think the event would've benefited from having locations spread across Southtown, thus alleviating traffic and creating urgency. Another minor critique is I would've actually liked to have seen St. Arnold's booths of some sort offering their beers on tap or in a can at destinations. Still in it's totality I enjoyed the experience despite some of its shortcomings. Seeing participants go from spot to to spot with their magic punchout card, as though it were an Olympic Event; was kinda inspiring. And the rad pint glass, my Major Award at the end was a sight to behold. I definitely would like to do one again at some point, I just need to begin training. ps. Cheers! St. Arnold's Pub Crawl is so much fun! The Houston brewery puts these on every year, or more often if you're lucky. Basically, you get a punch card at one of five local bars that are all close to each other. At each pub, you get your St. Arnold's card punched. Get them all punched, and collect a free special edition pint glass! Score! Prost! St. Arnold's is the oldest independent brewery in Houston, the city's first real microbrewery. They've since moved to a bigger and classier location to churn out the beer! They offer a bunch of favorites, and usually some cool seaonals. Be sure to check out a different St. Arnold's beer at each stop! You'll be sure to know where the crawl ends- you'll find St. Arnold's Art Car, plastered with St. Arnold's art, in the style of the Houston tradition and infamous Art Car Parade. Did you know that Saint Arnold is the patron saint of brewers? In order to become a saint, you have to perform some miracles. St. Arnold's was that he and some thirsty worshipers were going on a pilgrimage, and came across an empty house, where they found a single beer, and a mug. They poured the beer into the mug, and started passing the beer around to the thirsty monks- but as they passed it around, it never went empty! The beer kept providing sustenance and booze to the monks until they could drink no more. It was a beer miracle! St. Arnold was canonized, as this beer obviously came straight from Heaven. Booked online https://trolleypub.com/sanantonio/pub-crawl-route/ and texted link to all riders for waiver that is required to be signed in advance. Our time slot was changed to put us with other riders. I'm assuming they don't want to have two trips half full versus one trip totally full. Once that was confirmed, the total fee was charged. The address given 517 Live Oak is different than the Broadway address listed on Yelp page. Read the FAQs beforehand to get the best experience. We parked underneath the bridge, next to the hotel because it seemed safer than the vacant gravel parking lot on Live Oak. The meet up spot is the parking lot of a bar, Home Room. Arrived 15 minutes before scheduled departure time, as instructed. Trolley arrived at 2 pm. No name or ID verification or anything like that. Driver didn't have a set route or offer a route, so we requested the bars that are on the downtown route. Even though there is an ice chest onboard, we were able to fit our own small ice chest. (It wasn't clear if they provided ice in their chest but this trip they did. Our bag of snacks were stored in the overhead storage. We visited Box Car, Bentley's Beer Garden and Back Unturned. La Roca was on the list but it was closed. There was a gals party of 7 that road with us and they played their music, which was OK. They sat on the trolley the whole time, even when we did bar stops. They were salty and threw an occasional negative comment but by the end, they chilled out. Driver was friendly. We asked him to come inside the bars to flag us down when it was time to go. We tipped cash instead of doing it from follow up email. Trolley has power so pedaling is not critical. Seats can be a bit uncomfortable. There is a bench seat at the back (no pedals). According to their Yelp history, its been a while since this company was reviewed. So, know its legit.

We visited three bars on dirty sixth, and really got a good view of the nightlife around the downtown area. As we attended each bar, there are specialty drinks that the pub crawl has partnered with the bar. My favorite is the Captain America - a heroic classic shot (yes, shot!) - at Buckshots that consists of raspberry liquor, sprite, and blue curacao, plus some additional stuff. Super yum! All the drink specials are such steals that this tour is a bargain!
