We went for a special date after hearing our friends rave about this place. The ambiance was so warm and cozy and there were different levels of seating. My absolute favorite was on their monthly menu. That udon was so smooth and delicious. The staff were kind and gave us space. The hand roll and Karage were solid but I felt like it was missing something. The dessert however was so dreamy. We loved getting a blank postcard at the end, which we used to write about our memories.

Cute place, though I didn't think the food was something I'd want to come back and have over and over again. Granted the pork belly was to go, but I didn't think there was anything that special. Service was sufficient; I sat at the bar so naturally the bartender was swamped but she was attentive enough. Drinks were yum and served in kitsch cup. Convenient location from my hotel; I was tired and didn't want to venture too far. I may come back and try other dishes in the future. And maybe sit at an actual table and enjoy the meal onsite.

Not bad for San Antonio, is it on the pricy side. Spam Masubi was tiny and done like a sushi roll which is not what the authentic version is Bao bun is a bit dry and small Braised pork was good Steak was good Overall nice atmosphere abut the food is very average at best

Food was 4.5/5, service was 5/5 (!!!), and ambiance is 4.5/5 (great location and well decorated inside, but a little too dark haha) The portions here are weird so eating alone was interesting. I got the kimchi salad (yummy but not really any trace of kimchi haha), the furikake fries (yummy, crispy, and a huge plate!), spicy pork belly (delicious sauces, cooked well, small portion...), and the Tokyo tres leches (it was blueberry cinnamon that night which was a little disappointing tbh, I was hoping for a more Asian flavor :( flavor was still good but it wasn't anything special). Shoutout to Michelle for making my meal super comfortable and providing amazing service (she gave me a bunch of sauces for my fries haha). So I rounded up my review to 5 stars. Overall, this is a cool Asian fusion place in the middle of downtown and worth a visit!

Located right on the riverwalk it is a popular restaurant spot so make sure to get a reservation during peak times. It's a fusion of new American and Japanese. In reality it primarily American dishes with certain Asian sauces and spices. They have a pretty limited menu (see pics). I got their Short Rib Bao Buns and Furikake fries. Short Rib Bao Buns (which literally reads short rib bun buns) had jalapenos and pickled onions with the short rib inside an Asian bun. It tasted fine just don't expect any authentic asian flavors. The Furikake fries were good. I liked that they used thinner fries and were nice and crispy. Bonito lakes and Furikake were toppled on. It was rather dim inside if you like that kind of vibe. The server was pretty good though wish he came by more often to refill our drinks. For the price there are definitely better options, but if you are just looking for a decent restaurant on the Riverwalk, this one is alright.

THIS is what we came to TC for - the dinner menu!! Showed up once before and could only order from the brunch menu (good, but not my brand). Drinks started off slow but pace picked up later in the evening. Great bar menu w/ so many tough choices. Lords of Death is their version of a Manhattan I suppose - very, very good. Wife had the Mogwai's Night Out - a vodka margarita of sorts - she enjoyed! Brisket egg roll was perfect. Crispy wrapper, cheesy goodness within. Crispy pork belly was yum!! Topped with spicy serranos and a cooling salsa verde beneath. The Krab & Crab roll was special...very highly recommend! Spam roll was good - wasn't sure what to expect but well worth it. Hot oil chicken dumplings were pretty good, also. The dashi corn waffle was probably my least favorite, but what I was most excited about. Not bad at all, but the shrimp could use some texture and the waffle was heavy. There are so many great options - might push the waffle to the back of the list if you have to choose between two options. Finished off with the daily tres leches - today was coconut flavored. So light and perfectly soaked...highly recommend! Service was on point; we never had to look for him or do without. The 1st round of drinks probably took 15min but got back to normal pretty quickly. Environment is quaint and comfortable. Seating is community'ish...you sit pretty close to your neighbors. Overall, would def come back!

We had a reservation for our anniversary and specifically requested a balcony seat. We arrived on time, and our balcony seat was not prepared. We had to wait an additional 15 minutes. The restaurant smelled fishy. Our server was very nice and our food came out one at a time. The short rib Bao bun was very dry. We asked for spicy Mayo, they said sure but never brought it. The NY strip steak was really good and comes medium rare. The sauce that comes with it is sweet and salty. The double cheeseburger was also really good, very greasy, very salty as well. The burger itself was salty so the egg yolk soy sauce dipping sauce made it too salty to eat. Overall, this place is okay but will not be coming back.

You need to go to Tokyo Cowboy!! This place has a great HH. Small bites and drinks are available during HH. Great prices and wonderful drinks, along with delicious food. Old Fashioned was $9.00, Karaage chicken & Soboro fries were very filling. It's a small place that gets busy so reservations are recommended, but we did a walk in and got a table with a time limit. What really made our visit special was our server, Galen. He listen, checked on us and treated us with a complimentary dessert to help us celebrate our anniversary!! PS they have a secret bar downstairs... Go, enjoy and live your best life.

Such a fun culinary experience. And great deals for happy hour plates! We were obsessed with the shishito peppers, we ended up getting two orders of them, and we loved them so much I couldn't even stop to get a picture either time! Service is quick and plates come out as soon as they are ready. Fun to order a multiple things and share!

Consistently rated one of the top happy hours in San Antonio, Tokyo Cowboy did not disappoint. We were seated on their small but well positioned deck overlooking the River Walk. Our server was super friendly and helpful. We ordered every item on the happy hour menu accompanied by cans of local brew. The smoked salmon and chicken karaage were amazing but everything was tasty. We also got the brisket egg rolls which were delish. The whole experience was only $60 which was amazing. 5 star experience from beginning to end!

It's a cute little place, light fixtures are fun and very nice. Food was good, very different, expected a bit more options from the menu, but only complaint was the food needed more umph, flavors were good but mild, sauces were sparse and pork belly was good but on the dry side. The waiter barely came by, all the plates were brought out at different times and by different people. Also I had ordered a lemonade, never received it, at least I wasn't charged for it.

I have to start with the drinks: one whiskey cocktail (the one with ube) was genuinely unique and delicious, which is saying something since I don't even like whiskey. I could drink that particular one every time and be thrilled. Our server was great--friendly, funny, and highly attentive to our food allergies as a group of seven. The food was generally good and interesting, though not exceptional overall. The mac and cheese was interesting, but the rice noodles were a little gloopy; you wouldn't want too much of it. The salmon and steak were solid. The dashi corn waffle was just so-so; it sounds better than it is executed. My favorite food items were definitely the crab roll and the green beans. They were the clear standouts of the meal. I'd happily return for drinks and appetizers, but not a full meal.

This place was a gem!! We were lucky to be able to find a reservation for our large group on our work trip to SA. Immediately, this place seemed interesting, with the southern comfort food and Asian fusion. We ordered almost the entire menu, which was great, because I wanted to try it all! For appetizers, we ordered the short rib bao buns, kimchi salad, hot chicken chili dumplings, brisket egg rolls, and the krab & crab roll. Everything had so much flavor and really complimented each other. My favorites were the krab roll (that butter sauce!!) and the bao buns. The kimchi salad doesn't actually have kimchi chunks in it, but the sauce is very delicious. For entrees, we tried the dashi corn waffle, karaage, pork belly, and shrimp noodles. The karaage and shrimp noodles were definitely a hit. You absolutely need to get a plate of the pickles, they are very unique and pair nicely with the food. We also got the side of green beans, which was one of our favorite dishes of the night. Don't forget dessert - the tres leches was absolutely delicious and not too sweet (a great thing)! The cocktails and the service were also incredible. Overall, it was the best dinner experience we had during our time in SA. I would definitely come back if I am ever back in town!

Great afternoon spent here...very personable staff, and engaging...wasn't too busy and atmosphere…read morewas great!

Update to first review below, rating updated from a 3 to a 5 star (drinks & bartender would get 10+…read morestars if we could rate that high): Saturday night: Went back for after dinner drinks at the Downstairs (a "speakeasy" throwback, look up the history of the place to see why). Drinks were AMAZING! Bartender Rob made the best Negroni I've ever had. I asked him to use whatever gin he thought best--result was an artistic smooooooth full-bodied drink. Told him when I was done I'd lick the glass if it wasn't considered so uncouth for a 'mature' lady like myself to do so Hubby's Buffalo Trace bourbon old fashioned was also outstanding. Rob was the bartender last night who did such a great job, and his work was even better tonight. We highly recommend The EsquireTavern for excellent cocktails. We love the long wood bar and high copper ceiling upstairs, but love the intimate speakeasy atmosphere downstairs even more. We'll definitely be back every time we're in San Antonio! First review, Friday night: Drinks were great (Manhattan and Bourbon Old Fashioned). REAL drinks, no complaints at all about those. And the bartenders were very friendly and helpful. Those aspects of the Esquire get 5+ stars from us. But the appetizers were not good, close to inedible. It was about 8:30pm or so, so maybe they were getting ready to close out the kitchen but the chalupitas with chicken tasted like rubber, and no flavor at all. The seafood platter had something in it that was breading with shell inside, but no meat of any kind. We couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. The shrimp was good and the fish was good but those other things... We'll always love the drinks, the long wooden bar, and the ambiance at the Esquire Tavern, but we'll eat somewhere else and come here for before or after dinner drinks. (See update above to this review for when we returned the next night for after dinner drinks.)
