A very nice space right above the Riverwalk. The service was helpful and attentive. The food was a mix. I started with which was Senpia Sour ... a rye mixed with pear brandy and oolong tea. Enjoyed the flavor! The Happy Hour (M-F, 4-6PM) had good sized proportions at an excellent price. I tried the Karaage chicken ... crispy chicken thighs with a spicy, flavorful dipping sauce. The shredded vegetable salad was a solid mix of veggies, salt and sweet...huge plate as well. I also tried the pork dumplings .. fried. I was not a fan as the pork lacked flavor ... bland to me.

Delicious! Affordable. Excellent service. Cute vibes. We wanted to recreate so many dishes we tried at home. Loved it.

Back in San Antonio and first stop, Tokyo Cowboy and dinner was served! After settling into our Airbnb, Tokyo Cowboy came up highly recommend. I'm glad they had room for us but, it's still safe to make reservations. We did not know they are a tapas style restaurant, but that didn't deter us. And we were pleasantly surprised at the size of their "tapas". What we ordered was enough for two people to share. Dumplings - 9/10 Gulf Shrimp & Noodles - 10/10 Blistered Green Beans - 10/10 Ramen - 9/10 Service was great. It's a casual atmosphere, but perfect for an intimate date night.

Happy hour is well worth the cost for both drinks and food. Orders came out quick, and there was plenty of seating for walk-ins on a weekday. I wish the fried pork dumplings and shrimp tempura had a little less dough, as it overpowered the filling, but otherwise great meal.

The food and service were just okay. I wasn't amazed by any of the dishes and I would not come back.

OMG I cannot say enough good things about this place! We were in San Antonio for a conference and wanted to get out of the hotel for a dinner. Firstly, we had trouble getting an uber at first and when I called the staff was very friendly and were able to hold the table a little longer which I appreciated. The menu is a mix of Asian Fusion small plates and I would have loved to have had more of a sampling of the menu but it wasn't that large of a party. The cocktails were not too sweet and perfectly balanced. The Fist of Fury was so refreshing and the Yuzu margarita was delightful! The plates come when they are ready and I have to say the food came really quick! All of it was fantastic! Surprisingly the shredded vegetable salad was amazing and one of my favorite dishes! The tamarind glaze on the Chicken Karaage was not overpowering and so tasty. The service was amazing and the vibes of the restaurant were a lot of fun. The bathrooms were down the stairs and there was a little bar off to the side. Would definitely go back! I couldn't stop talking about it the next day to anyone that would listen.

Delicious family style meals! Everything we ate was tasty, but the standout has to be the green beans. I could eat 3 plates of those. Really enjoyed the Ube cocktail I got too! Ambiance is dark and cozy, but I will say, I sat in a booth and felt very short up against the table!

Cute place, though I didn't think the food was something I'd want to come back and have over and over again. Granted the pork belly was to go, but I didn't think there was anything that special. Service was sufficient; I sat at the bar so naturally the bartender was swamped but she was attentive enough. Drinks were yum and served in kitsch cup. Convenient location from my hotel; I was tired and didn't want to venture too far. I may come back and try other dishes in the future. And maybe sit at an actual table and enjoy the meal onsite.

Not bad for San Antonio, is it on the pricy side. Spam Masubi was tiny and done like a sushi roll which is not what the authentic version is Bao bun is a bit dry and small Braised pork was good Steak was good Overall nice atmosphere abut the food is very average at best

Food was 4.5/5, service was 5/5 (!!!), and ambiance is 4.5/5 (great location and well decorated inside, but a little too dark haha) The portions here are weird so eating alone was interesting. I got the kimchi salad (yummy but not really any trace of kimchi haha), the furikake fries (yummy, crispy, and a huge plate!), spicy pork belly (delicious sauces, cooked well, small portion...), and the Tokyo tres leches (it was blueberry cinnamon that night which was a little disappointing tbh, I was hoping for a more Asian flavor :( flavor was still good but it wasn't anything special). Shoutout to Michelle for making my meal super comfortable and providing amazing service (she gave me a bunch of sauces for my fries haha). So I rounded up my review to 5 stars. Overall, this is a cool Asian fusion place in the middle of downtown and worth a visit!

We went for a special date after hearing our friends rave about this place. The ambiance was so warm and cozy and there were different levels of seating. My absolute favorite was on their monthly menu. That udon was so smooth and delicious. The staff were kind and gave us space. The hand roll and Karage were solid but I felt like it was missing something. The dessert however was so dreamy. We loved getting a blank postcard at the end, which we used to write about our memories.

Great happy hour spot, you can reserve a table at open table to make sure you get a spot. Chicken karaage is the best in town, great female bartender

Located right on the riverwalk it is a popular restaurant spot so make sure to get a reservation during peak times. It's a fusion of new American and Japanese. In reality it primarily American dishes with certain Asian sauces and spices. They have a pretty limited menu (see pics). I got their Short Rib Bao Buns and Furikake fries. Short Rib Bao Buns (which literally reads short rib bun buns) had jalapenos and pickled onions with the short rib inside an Asian bun. It tasted fine just don't expect any authentic asian flavors. The Furikake fries were good. I liked that they used thinner fries and were nice and crispy. Bonito lakes and Furikake were toppled on. It was rather dim inside if you like that kind of vibe. The server was pretty good though wish he came by more often to refill our drinks. For the price there are definitely better options, but if you are just looking for a decent restaurant on the Riverwalk, this one is alright.

Update to first review below, rating updated from a 3 to a 5 star (drinks & bartender would get 10+…read morestars if we could rate that high): Saturday night: Went back for after dinner drinks at the Downstairs (a "speakeasy" throwback, look up the history of the place to see why). Drinks were AMAZING! Bartender Rob made the best Negroni I've ever had. I asked him to use whatever gin he thought best--result was an artistic smooooooth full-bodied drink. Told him when I was done I'd lick the glass if it wasn't considered so uncouth for a 'mature' lady like myself to do so Hubby's Buffalo Trace bourbon old fashioned was also outstanding. Rob was the bartender last night who did such a great job, and his work was even better tonight. We highly recommend The EsquireTavern for excellent cocktails. We love the long wood bar and high copper ceiling upstairs, but love the intimate speakeasy atmosphere downstairs even more. We'll definitely be back every time we're in San Antonio! First review, Friday night: Drinks were great (Manhattan and Bourbon Old Fashioned). REAL drinks, no complaints at all about those. And the bartenders were very friendly and helpful. Those aspects of the Esquire get 5+ stars from us. But the appetizers were not good, close to inedible. It was about 8:30pm or so, so maybe they were getting ready to close out the kitchen but the chalupitas with chicken tasted like rubber, and no flavor at all. The seafood platter had something in it that was breading with shell inside, but no meat of any kind. We couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. The shrimp was good and the fish was good but those other things... We'll always love the drinks, the long wooden bar, and the ambiance at the Esquire Tavern, but we'll eat somewhere else and come here for before or after dinner drinks. (See update above to this review for when we returned the next night for after dinner drinks.)
