Saint Genevieve High School somehow manages to make every single day feel longer than a year. The food tastes like it was made during the Great Depression, the bathrooms look like a survival challenge, and the parking situation is basically a battle royale. Half the teachers act like they're training Navy SEALs instead of teaching high school, while the other half give enough homework to ruin your entire weekend. School spirit feels forced, the Wi-Fi barely works when you actually need it, and somehow every event costs money. If stress, confusion, and disappointment were a school, this would be it. read more

St. Genevieve Church in Panorama City, CA bought out an ENTIRE block of homes, demolished them, and constructed the ugliest buildings I've ever seen. One is about 8 stories tall with NO windows (see pic)...what is the purpose of that?? What if there is a fire? This church has endless amounts of cash, they get the city to cater to their every needs, including special law enforcement from LAPD to sweep homeless people or anyone who looks unclean from the sidewalk in front of their church. I attended church there a few times, it was very quick and strange. I would never send my kids to that high school. read more

My review constantly taken down which is BS. I went during the regime of Ms. Denis. You couldn't do anything. There was no real programs. Everything was held with duck tape. Barely any real clubs. Our production of West Side Story was so primitive. Ms. Denis even invited the faculty of her daughter's school--Hamilton High to see it. It was embarrassing. There was no actual counseling of going to a real school because back then, all they figured you would go is Pierce and CSUN. Only about 10-15 students went to universities. You had to wear a skirt in the winter. My experience here at this school was bad. It was never fun. I was in the Honors class and they put newly hired green teachers with no experience. Anything I have accomplished has nothing to do with graduating from this sham of a place. read more

It's very disappointing/disturbing to find out that such a prestigious School does not go by their own rules and regulations. Upon hearing the discriminatory and the unfair treatment of children in the school is beyond outrageous! When a child, who has an outstanding GPA and leads by example is kicked out of School with no reason or does not have the courtesy to sit with the parents and the child to explain what has happened in order for such an act is not a school that we parents should look into. Instead this school should be investigated even further. I have heard what has happened to more than one student in this school, and am pretty shocked by the leadership of this School. not only is your treatment of children, discouraging and disappointing, but the fact that you cannot communicate with parents about the children or child behavior is even more concerning. I personally was looking into this School for family members that live in the San Fernando Valley after hearing the treatment of a good student, a student who has always treated her teachers and leadership with respect was not treated with the same respect as well as her parents and family. I don't usually write reviews, but I owe this to other parents. I wish I could have done more research when I saw parents protesting outside St Genevieve high school at their open house. Our biggest regret as parents is to have chosen St Genevieve high school for our child. Overall experience was the opposite of kind, loving and safe environment. Teachers are disrespectful, curse and bully students and there is no accountability for what they do. Mr Horn ignores calls and urgent emails which leads me to believe that students safety is not his priority. Mr Horn retaliates, he lacks empathy and concern for students. I can only describe him as cruel, he forgets he works in a catholic school. He thinks he's above everything and everyone and treats families with such disrespect. One or two bad teachers is a problem with the teachers. A school with many bad teachers is a problem of leadership... Don't get impress by their open house! It's just a show! This 21-22 school year is my daughters first year at St Gens and as a high schooler I was afraid that she wouldn't fit in because all/most of the students have been together since grade school. Boy was I wrong, they accepted her and welcomed her with open arms from day 1. The students here are happy. I love the fact that if when I email the teachers I usually receive a reply within the hour. You can not expect this type of turn around in a public school. The staff is always so welcoming every time I step on campus. I see smiling faces not only on the staff faces but also the students. Today was my sons last day at St. Genevieve High School for his graduation. I cannot say enough about what a wonderful school this is and how impressed I am with their organization and love for the students. My sons senior year was not what we all wanted since it happened during the covid-19 pandemic. St. Genevieve announced the school would be closing due to the covid on a Friday and that following Monday my son had a full schedule of classes via zoom until the last day of school. The pandemic really affected our seniors since they did not have prom, senior grad night, their last sports banquets etc. but St. Gens always stayed on top of their well being and the kids really enjoyed and looked forward to their zoom classes. I compared st. Gens to my other child's (public) school, and there was no comparison at all! My other child never had zoom classes and rarely heard from her teachers. Before the pandemic, I loved how all the staff knew the students by name. They even knew the parents by name and you can see they truly loved their job. I have never know such hard working teachers as the ones at St. Genevieve. I could go on and on but I will end with the Epic graduation they had for the seniors. Under the circumstances due to the pandemic, they organized a drive in style graduation. Students arrived according to last name and stayed in their cars. When it was time they all exited their cars and sat in chairs that were 6 ft away from each other and wore a mask. The graduation was also live via zoom and there was a beautiful set is stage with decorations. Everything was perfect! When it was over all the staff lined up and congratulated the seniors , waved and smiled as we all drove out. We are very grateful for everything this school has done for my son and our family. If you want an excellent high school for your child, I strongly recommend St. Genevieve High School. St. Genevieve HS is NOT what it claims to be. They pick and choose who they want to called, " Valiants". They are the biggest hypocrites that I have ever met. They praise to be who President Carter would portray but when our daughter needed support for what she was going through, they turned their backs on us. They allowed one person to determine why she couldn't stay at their school. Not even Mr. Horn as much as he speaks up for equal justice stepped in. I thanked the teachers for their support and not ONE responded. I have always been told that the faculty and staff have been drinking the kool-aide and now I know that to be true. St. Genevieve High School might have that title of being a "National School of Character" but inside it is a school of lies. It is a pale resemblance of a Catholic high school. If you are a parent who wants to send your child to a Catholic high school, send your child elsewhere- like Notre Dame, Providence, Alemany, etc. SGHS might be the more affordable option, but your kids could get a better education at any of the above-mentioned private Catholic high school or a public high school. As long as Dan Horn is the principal of this school, it will remain corrupt. Because of him, mass is held in the GYM- not the church that helps fund St. Gens and the one that parents contribute to. And his idea of school uniforms here are warm-ups. That's right, clothes you wear to the gym or for working out. All the good teachers I had from 1996-2000 left this place, and with good reason. I know of two good ones that are still there, but none of them impacted my life like the ones who left. One who is unfortunately still there is Marlon Archey, a has-been television actor who gave me a C in my drama class because I refused to perform karaoke as my final. Screw you, SGHS. Our daughter has had an amazing experience at St Genevieve High School. The school is friendly and practices good Christian morals, as is shown in their pillars character: fairness, responsibility, respect, trustworthiness, caring, citizenship. It is a designated School of Character, and shows it all the time. The teachers are supportive and the academic curriculm challenges students. As a junior, my daughter is in AP classes and is also on the volleyball team and in the school play. The parents are included in many school functions such as the guest speaker series, mass, sports and theater events. The reviews for this school so far are pretty hilarious. My experience at this school was average, but I know that it is surely better than attending the LAUSD high schools near the area during the mid to late 90s. I attended the LAUSD public schools from grade school to middle school. With the budget cuts, classes started to get over crowded. My middle school math class before had 65 students! Attending a private catholic high school was a big adjustment for me. The first thing I've noticed during my freshman year was that we had homework during the weekends. Coming from a public school, homework on weekends was unheard of. I also remember that the juniors and seniors were pretty mean to the freshman class. There are teachers here who really cared about the students...just a handful, and I'm thankful that they were there. I'm not sure how the school is run now, but during my time there, it was like a dictatorship. No whites on your shoes, must tuck in shirt, no facial hair...etc. read more

My child is in the middle of his third year at St. Genevieve High School. I'm very happy with the education he has received to date. The students are groomed and prepared to go to college. College prep, AP & honors courses are offered. There are many opportunities for students to be involved in extra curricular activities. From Marching band, drumline, jazz band to football, baseball, to the school musicals. While this is a Catholic high school; the students are not kept in the dark of World news. The school also has what is called "night school" classes. During these night school sessions various motivational speakers visit St Genevieve from all over the country. As for the financial side of it. It is expensive. No doubt. But i also see this as an investment in my child. By all Means, education begins at home but this school has given him many great opportunities to excel in life. Im fortunate Mr Jasso helped me make the decision to enroll my child. Mr. Horn the principal of the High school changed the way each school year begins. He has Seniors, Juniors & Sophomores welcome ALL freshman and begin a camaraderie with them. An all day event is put on called "freshman day" To welcome them aboard. Ms. Allen was a breath of fresh air on the elementary side. She brought order, fairness and equality. Ms. Parker, Ms Alipio and all the teachers at Little Angels preschool are phenomenal and go above and beyond for the little future Valiants. My little one attends the preschool. He's happy as a clam. In closing, all schools have their in-house issues, just like anywhere else, I'm sure st gen schools are no exception, but one thing is certain, all 3 schools are great. read more

Has some of the lowest tuition compared to other Catholic High Schools. Predominantly attended by Filipino and Latino students. You don't have to be Catholic to attend (that would be illegal if they didn't let you attend). This place has no nuns/sisters walking around ready to slap you with ruler. The student population is reflective of the community with a large amount of students of Filipino decent attending. Not the best school. There is no more arts program whatsoever due to the whole Doporto scandal (involving the performing arts director being charged with having over 600 images of child abuse and pornographic material) and the choir teacher being gone. The grammy nominated music teacher who also started the band program no longer works there due to Horn making too many budget cuts to help offset the fact that the school nearly went bankrupt over his "inspiration" building. The new inspiration building is just a waste due to the failure of a performing arts program this year. Horn took two days to notify the parents of a school shooting threat we received but went on announcements the day of the threat to get the culprit to come out to "let us help them". How did Horn try to get the culprit to come out you ask? By repeatedly saying how much everyone loves each other at this school and that we should all continue to live a christlike life. You also get your financial aid removed if you don't go to the night schools. Therefore meaning that if you have maybe a doctors appointment, a family emergency, or simply parents being busy at work, your financial aid may be taken away as those points aren't good enough excuses. This is a school where sloppy gym clothes are the main uniform.. what's even worse is that you have to TUCK IN GYM CLOTHES. A lot of people come into school looking like bums who just woke up and to make up for it, Dela Cruz enforces everyone to tuck in their gym shirts into their gym shorts. Send your kid to somewhere like St. Monica, Alemany, Norte Dame, or even Chaminade. Do your child a favor and give them the academic curriculum they deserve. Grading curriculum is easy here, it's beyond easy to receive an A, and Horn keeps hiring new teachers who don't care, which is why here are low AP pass rates at this school. read more

As we were looking for high school for our daughter we visited many different schools here in the San Fernando Valley, all of which are good schools. Then we had our visit at Saint Genevieve High School, from the moment we arrived in the parking lot we knew that there was something special about this school. As soon as we got out of our car we didn't know where to go and a couple of the students that saw us, approached us, and immediately offered their assistance. They led us to where we were supposed to be. As we entered the the main building we we knew that this is the school that we were going to send our daughter to. We automatically felt like we were welcome. Then we met the admissions director (Mr. Jasso) and the Dean (Mrs. De La Cruz) who made us feel like we were already part of the SG family. The entire staff gave you that same feeling of being part of the family. What else can I say about Saint Genevieve that I haven't already said. We love this school and the staff is amazing. This current 16-17 school year was my daughter's first year at St Gen as a Freshman. I am beyond impressed with the school. I was just like every parent who is nervous in sending off their child to high school, especially with the horror stories you hear about schools in general but I was wrong. To date I have been very pleased with the caliber and education she has received. I was completely surprised when she told me that the first day of school was an all day event that was put together by the upper grade students as a Welcome Freshman day. I had never heard of any other school making every student involved in creating a safe and welcoming atmosphere to all the new students. I can honestly say that from day one she has been happy. She likes her teachers, has excelled in subjects that she struggled with in Jr High and better yet has not missed one day of school which reflect on her grades and GPA. I have St Gen's faculty and principal to thank for providing the right tools from the start! Additionally while this is a Catholic School and values, character and respect are high on the standards they uphold, this is not your average Catholic School. It is very modern and puts its academics ahead of everything else. They are grooming and prepping students for college from 9th grade by offering College Prep, AP and Honor courses, along with a plethora of extra curricular activities. Unlike most private schools that are very rigid in their dress code, they allow the students to wear daily "Nike athletic gear" that of course is sold in the campus. This is not to say that they are not strict about the athletic uniform because they are but my point is that they have created an environment of comfort and again focuses more on the academics and athletics over dressing like you are going to church everyday. Don't get me wrong there are days that formal wear is required but its not everyday which is really cool. On the financial side of things....don't be scared or think you cannot afford it. Talk to Mrs Z and explain your concern or hestiations and trust me she will walk you thru any process. They are willing to help so don't feel discouraged if you go online and review the tuition pricing. What I find very refreshing and innovative are the night schools which take place once or twice a month every other month or so. The night school sessions feature various motivational speakers that visit from all walks of life and offer such a profound view into their life and struggles that is so inspiring and special. I personally look forward to the night schools. Mr. Horn has provided a way for you as a parent to partake in these night school events which take place in the evening. It really shows how much this school wants you as a parent to have an open dialogue with your child after the end of the event and as you drive home. I really appreciate the time and effort every faculty member puts into these events. Its really a wonderful experience to be a part of and shows the school spirit in full effect. Frankly I have not come across that type of school spirit anywhere else. My daughter just completed her first year of high school, we had such an amazing experience. She's formerly coming from LAUSD schools her entire education. This is definitely a great choice. Her teachers are very inspiring, Ms. Sotoj had such a great impact on her. Math isn't her strongest subject but Mr. Van helped change that. She had a great experience with all teachers and staff. She Made the honor roll both semesters. The facility and staff have always been very helpful and kind. The school goes above academics, it feels like a family. This school is a joke. Went here for ten years (started at the elem. sch.) and then eventually got kicked out for having Madonna posters in my locker. Granted, it was the early 90s but whatever. I have only been a part of the SG family for one year, but I feel like I have been there for years. The staff is very friendly and always there to help. I have read every comments that gave this school one to two star ratings. After reading the comments, I realized that these were written by former students I am assuming who are bitter and resentful. As a parent of a current student at this school, i am obligated to write my observation and current experience of this school. I have met students of this school and so far these students are just like any students from other schools. One of the comment stated that the class is "sub-par, not challenging at all, with some teachers not giving a fuck about their jobs," and it made me laugh because I am an active participant of my child's life. I have seen my child's homework and books and projects, and to me it is not sub-par. As far as the teachers not caring about their job, it is not what I saw or seen. For exemplar, my child did not do well in the beginning of the school year and his/her counselor spoke to him/her about his/her grades to encourage him/her to do better. In my own experience, no counselor has ever pulled my child aside to speak to them about their grade and how to improve it. Most of the child's teachers had been helpful in showing him/her how to improve. One comment states that he was denied an AP class, well just like any other school and in college, one has to meet the pre-requisite in order to get the class so this person might have met the criteria. Granted this person did get into AP at the school he transferred to, but does not change the fact because each school has their own pre-requisite. Most of the comments written on here giving the school low rating are based on these former students experience and how they believe they were treated, which to me is very subjective. I have met some former students who have graduated from this school who are happy and going great in college. So should I based my decision on a few students who are bitter and had an unhappy experience or do I based my decision on the former students who were happy of being an alumni of this school and doing great in college. I went to this school for a couple of years and I know a large amount of individuals who attended or currently attend this school. The tuition for this school is relatively cheap compared to other private schools, but this academic center doesn't focus on their students' education or anything beyond those lines. You know what SGHS really cares about? Their status as an "elite" place of learning and money. If the principal and administrators of this school actually cared about education, then why do the students have so many days off from school? And why do these students get out of school so early? I mean, three classes a day? That's incredibly pathetic. Honestly, I didn't feel academically challenged when I attended S.G.H.S. I'm not the most intellectual person, but honestly, the methods that this school takes when "teaching" their students are not challenging whatsoever. That five star below down there was obviously written by a parent, not a student who attends the school. I know firsthand of the things that occur at Saint Genevieve High School and let me tell you, these students are crazy. If the parents of these children honestly believe that all of the students are angels, then I have some shocking stories for you. With all the sex, drugs, drama, and fights that occur both outside and inside the school, I'm surprised that the entire student population has not yet been expelled. I did myself a favor when I left this school. I was sick and tired of their tedious methods of teaching, not to mention how vexed I grew, knowing that the school focused on their reputation (i.e. winning athletic competitions, their choir, etc.) more than anything else. When I left, I attended a public school that challenged me far more than S.G.H.S. with even BETTER teachers and classes for free. Do yourself and your children a favor, don't attend/send your kids to this school. The assignments, teachers, classes, or any other academic aspect of this school will NOT prepare your children for college whatsoever. I'm not sure why my review keeps getting removed. I just want others to know how happy I am and most importantly my daughter is with the school. I have seen my daughter go from a shy little girl to and outgoing young lady. She participates activities and is just thrilled with the school. She loves her teachers and how open they are in helping her when she needs it. Everyone has been very supportive and it encourages her to do better. My daughter and I love when they have speakers. They have all been amazing and inspiring. It's a great school and whatever negative comments have been made saddens me, but we are all entitled to our own opinion. I went here for a couple years in the mid '80's. I ended up leaving for personal reasons but my experience here was somewhat okay? So instead of my parents wasting the $75.00 a month in tuition I ended up transferring to another school sorry too say not another private school, but a public school but at that time was one of the best in the valley. read more
