They were quick to get us all checked in, and probably overwhelmed to see the amount of luggage. Guess we Americans need to learn to downsize. (Self included). While we were there some of the paths up and down stairs and through hallways could get a little confusing, the hotel itself is lovely. Stunning location near the water, and we got to see some Rugby from our room as well. No a/c sadly and I think we were there on the hottest month on record, but the breeze off the water was wonderful once it began. Restaurant downstairs was divine and breakfast on the patio was delicious as well each morning. They were staffed appropriately, which was a treat, because not everywhere we went managed to do the same. I look forward to going back for a visit, and this will be the first place I look to book in the area!

Unfortunately, it must have been chefs night off. To start I had smoked salmon. The salmon was very tasteless and the dressing was extremely bitter - a cheek suckingly bad combination of cheap extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice from a bottle and bitter salad leaves. Unfortunately, the salad hadn't been washed properly and many people in the party were getting a mouthful of grit along with their salad. For main course I opted for the Rib Eye Steak. One of my favourite cuts of beef, I always ask for it medium rare. It came to me an the rarer side of rare and it looked like the grill chef had just shown it the pan! A shame because it as actually quite a good piece of meat. The steak came with the obligatory chips, which were hand cut and probably would have been extremely good if the oil had been changed in the frier sometime this year. There was nothing on the dessert menu that took my fancy so I played it safe and had the cheese board which was actually quite good. Most of the other people in the party had Profiteroles. I must admit they looked great when they came out, piled high with lots of cream and chocolate sauce so I tried a little of a friends. Unfortunately, the sauce was terrible. It had the texture of wet sand, the cocoa hadn't been dissolved in it properly and it was extremely bitter. It shouldn't have been served. Definitely chefs night off.

Carlton Hotel is a sea-front-front traditional hotel that has evidently been modernised inside…read more There are long corridors, steps, and narrow routes to rooms but it is very clean throughout and mostly everything is in good condition. My bedroom was fine and reasonably sized although the shower room was very small indeed with hardly room to use a towel after squeezing out of the shower compartment. Still, the shower worked well. Breakfast was good on the whole but sadly there were no mushrooms and on one of my two days no orange juice. Overall the hotel provided excellent value for money. Wi-fi worked very well too.
