A great place to stroll around, learn history about the grounds, and take some pics. There are numerous trails here that are beautiful. The paths are gravel so be sure to wear gym shoes. There's a gorgeous row of trees that is stunning for a photo shoot. Bonus - It is free to park and explore here. There are picnic tables out front as well as public bathrooms and vending machines. Spend a few minutes or a few hours here. It's a great place to venture and check out. This was a very quiet and calming experience for me. read more

Beautiful place! Wonderful helpful team of people who made the entire rental process so easy and seamless, especially Carmen & Nathaniel. The area is picturesque and the parallel rows of trees makes a perfect backdrop for photos. We decided to host our baby's baptism reception here since we invited over 45 people, and all our guests loved the location! (Rented Black Walnut Allee and the grill) . The restrooms are clean and easy to find inside the main building. Love St James Farm and highly recommend it for your special events. read more

I LOVE farms. When I heard our students were taking a field trip for a special school district event at St James, I was pretty darn excited. What could be cuter than farm animals and little kids?! Well... This place doesn't have any animals. Or crops. Or anything that even makes me think this is a farm aside from the former horse barns and fences. I was quite disappointed to discover this was just a preserve of a former horse farm. Fortunately, the kids had a good time as volunteers set up different exploratory stations and activities, including snakes and turtles. The preserve staff also offered wagon rides and a place for kids to plant oak trees! If they weren't set up, I doubt the kids would've had a good time. Farm expectations aside, it is a nice preserve with walking trails, trees, beautiful fences, fresh air, an old caboose to explore, and a creek flowing through the grounds. I just wish they had some animals! read more

This place is beautiful! The scenery is perfection for taking photos, especially in the fall months. We met our photographer here for family photos and I was so impressed with all of the possibilities. At St James you'll find big trees, barns, bridges, brick, old buildings, and more. In just a 20 minute photo shoot we were able to get shots with three totally different backgrounds and we didn't even have to walk far into the forest preserve at all (which was ideal with a baby, stroller, and dog in tow). The trees in the fall were absolutely stunning. I'm talking tall, wide, trees with bright yellow leaves filling the branches and the ground. Gorgeous in a photo. On a Saturday morning in early November St James was a happening spot for photos. There were so many families and photographers. Parking was easy though - plenty of spots in the lot right when you pull up. The best part? Entry is free! read more

My gf and I decided to check out St. James Forest Preserve on a trip up to Two Brothers Tap Room in Warrenville. We found it on a list of things to do in Warenville when doing research for what else we could get into there. We weren't expecting much, but it turned out to be the ideal way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Everything is incredibly well kept and maintained. It was so green and lush. I'm going to have to say that it is one of my favorite nature spots that I've been to so far in the Midwest. There is plenty of walking space to take a nice stroll and lots of nice random stops to check out along the walk through the preserve/park. The preserve is pretty expansive. There's lots to see, including my favorite spot, the Horse and Hound Cemetery. What a random and unique find! We went in late August and can't wait to go back in the fall when all the leaves are changing colors. read more

Came here looking for a location for engagement photos. St James Farm worked out great. I never found any staff to point me to some of the spots I knew were there but everything was easy to find. .We found the spots we were looking for and out photo set came out very nice! What a great little outdoor archery range. (Entrance off Mack Road) It's just a parking lot, a port-a-pottie, a few bow racks, a couple of picnic tables and about 100 yards of well maintained grass cut into the prairie. There are plenty of moveable target bags and stands. A dozen or so can comfortable shoot and everyone seems polite and safety conscious. This location will some be closed as the massive Blackwell Forest Preserve archery facility will open in a few weeks but I thought this little site should get a five starred pat on the back before it returns to a simple trail head parking lot. This place IS beautiful, but the woman working in the main building was incredibly rude to me and my kids. She was obviously someone who doesn't like kids, and I get that, but her unkindness was way over the top, to the point that I had angry tears in my eyes as we were leaving. I don't think I'll be returning so I don't have to relive that memory, which is a shame, since the trails are well kept. (We we're there 8/15/22 at 1:00 pm) read more

Lovely for a hike even in Winter. The maps which show trails are out of date. Some trails have disappeared while new ones have been developed. Suggest Alltrails app for more detail. My hiking meetup group really enjoyed this one. Its possible to do a nearly 4 mile loop. read more

St. James Farm is now open daily, one hour before sunrise, to one hour after sunset. To get in to the park, use the Butterfield rd access way (Madison north to Hoy, then west to the park entrance), as the gate on the west end is closed a lot. It's a lovely spot for relaxing, bike riding, horseback riding (BYOH) picnics...you know, nature stuff. read more

Such a beautiful place! I used to live near this place and loved it. You can bike here or drive. It's a pretty popular place this time of year bc the trees are amazing and beautiful. It's a very popular place to take photos and it could be crowded on the weekends. It's a nice place to walk around with anyone. I've taken kids (ages: 2,4,5,&9) they always have fun. They also have a couple picnic tables to eat at. I've been here a couple times when they have events going on here. I've seen a wedding being set up last year. It's a beautiful place. There are trails to go walking, biking, etc. Even though I don't live in this area I come here at least a few times a year bc it's that nice of a place! read more

There are a few interesting things to see here. Definately worth a one time visit, but probably not a lot of "replay value". There is however a nice little 3.5 mile trail. Easy terrain ,and somewhat scenic. However when you consider all the preserves around it, not sure why you'd come here instead. Pleasant few hours exploring with my son. read more

What a great place! St.James isnt just any old forest preserve full a trees and maybe a lil pond or something.This place is the old estate of Mr. McCormick and his family.He left behind 600 beautiful acres for us to enjoy. It has a bunch of beautiful horse barns,show arenas, fountains, ponds,trails (that link to other preserves like herrick and blackwell),bridges,creeks,wild turkeys, and tons of wildlife. The only downfall is that its only open on the weekends and is closed for the winter season but will be sure to reopen in may. My fav thing to do is to go sit by the pond and watch the enormous population of Cedar Waxwings that call the willow trees home.They are really entertaining! I also like to go track down the turkeys! read more

St. James Farm is such a beautiful place to visit, especially for photos! We met our photographer here last year for our maternity photo shoot and it was beautiful! There are many different places to take photos (in front of the barns, trees, wildflowers) and not much walking in between! We will definitely keep this location in mind for future family photo sessions! read more

This place pretty much blew my mind... a pretty barn, lots of walking trails, a horse cemetery?!, a cool little bridge, a train car?!... this place has it all! We walked around here with ease for over an hour. I thought this place would be so perfect for a photo shoot, and hope to return for my engagement photos! Had my ceremony here on Friday. This is one of my favorite places. This place is a hidden gem with the most Beautiful tree lines. Nathaniel, the event coordinator went above and beyond when showing me all the amazing spots to get married at. He even had a golf cart for my parents to transport from their cars to the ceremony location. He is very personable, knowledgeable, and passionate about his job. I would recommend st.
