We were excited to stay here, but ended up disappointed with the experience. There was no shower (only a tub), and our air conditioner was leaking fluid all over our room's carpeting, so a large portion of the floor was soaked. Overnight while sleeping in that room I developed a bad cough (that soon after became pneumonia), from the mold growing, I'm sure, and the next morning when I mentioned it to the front desk, they barely apologized. Plus, after arriving home, I realized I had forgotten my favorite pair of jeans there and they never notified me about that. The decor is outdated, from a renovation in the 80s, I would guess. The actual historical parts are beautiful, but it doesn't seem like they're putting much effort into it these days. read more

Last week we held our annual work retreat at the St. James Hotel in beautiful Red Wing. We always try to find a unique place that is accommodating and special, which we found at the St. James. I worked with Ashley, who did a fabulous job of setting everything up and taking care of all last minute requests. I work with a group that is very high maintenance, so it was great to have such an attentive staff serving us. The food was also wonderful. All meals received positive reviews from those who were attending. The hotel even catered a dinner and drove us out to Falconer Winery, which was also amazing. We were very fortunate to have a beautiful sunny crisp fall evening on their patio. It has fabulous views! After dinner we were shuttled back to the hotel and ended the evening in the tavern in the basement of the hotel for some wine. This bar was fun and the atmosphere was great. It had stone walls and was warm and cozy. If you live in the area, I would recommend hanging out here. The sleeping rooms were very nice. I was lucky and had one of the large deluxe rooms. It was very comfortable, although I did not get much sleep since our group likes to stay up late and put away wine like nobody's business! This hotel would be a great romantic getaway too, or for a fun girls weekend just an hour from the city. There are a lot of great bars and restaurants in the area to explore as well. This is a review of their bicycle rental service. I rented a bike to ride the Cannon Falls trail. The bike was in great shape, modern, and lightweight. Pickup & drop-off was quick & easy after calling a few hours ahead to ensure a bike was available. Minus one star because I was accidentally charged for a full day rental, when I only rented for the half-day. But after notifying the hotel of the issue they very quickly fixed it, which impressed me. Overall, convenient & easy bike rentals. A bit higher priced than other locations along the trail, but we chose it for the Red Wing location. read more

This hotel is a beautiful old hotel with a grand lobby and staircase. The checkin process was simple and quite friendly. Our room was small, but cosy. There was a little dust on the non-essential items, but that was easily overcome by the quaintness of the room and hotel. Jimmy's bar is a lively place, but has some of the most beautiful woodwork I've seen in a bar. The fireplace is a great place to relax. The library in the lobby is the perfect spot to have a nightcap before bed. Even at -17 degrees outside, you will feel snug as a bug in a rug in this gem. read more

I spent a night at the St. James hotel for one night with my significant other. After my stay, I saw an extra charge of $200 on my bank statement. I was not informed as to why I was charged extra and had to call the hotel several times to get someone to explain to me why I was charged this amount. I finally was given a call back and was told we were charged for smoking marijuana in the room. This was a false accusation. I was told several staff and guests complained about the smell and they had to shut the room down for two days to clean everything, Never once was anything smoked in the room and we were never confronted about the smell while we were there. I am not sure if this has anything to do with my significant other being of color, but it seems very likely. read more

We had our daughter's wedding at the St James. It was a great experience. The service was top notch, and the food for the dinner was well made and served. The flower shop provided all the flowers, and setup an archway in the park. Everything for the event went smoothly. I learned there are really two hotels - the new and the old. So there are two sets of elevators. We stayed in the new section - very nice room and bath. They have bathrobes, no need to bring your own. We heard a train whistle or two, but it was not disturbing. The room I stayed in had a beautiful view and the beds were comfortable... However, they charged me for the room and ALSO a full nights worth of money as a 'deposit'. It's been ten days since I stayed there and I STILL haven't received that back in my account. And the bartender at Jimmy's Bar (in the hotel) didn't tell me there was a $25 uncorking fee and I ended up paying $35 for a mimosa that was 'meh' as it was. If you're going to charge that much for a drink, at least tell me? Lord, I'd have just bought the bottle then. Over all, it's way overpriced, even for being 'pretty'. The longer I stayed, the more I appreciated. I have to say I left very happy with what St. James had offered. We booked the Dubuque Room and the first night was a little disappointing. The room faces 61 and the semi truck traffic all night long was very loud. Other than this it was a beautiful room. The next day we talked to the front desk and they moved us to the David Tipton room and it was much more quiet. They could not have been more accommodating. We had lunch at the Viranda and drinks and appetizer friday night at the Port. Both were excellent food and great service. I regret not making it to Jimmys. The hotel and staff were awesome. Expectations were exceeded. I really mean it when I say the longer we were there the more I fell in love with the charm and service. A couple areas where things could be improved. 1. Front desk staff were not that knowledgeable of local recommendations for entertainment or site seeing. Very friendly and helpful though. 2. All wait staff were great when you had their attention, but staffing seemed to be on the lean side so the staff was very very busy. We could not help but be patient and understanding when we did not see much of the waiter or bartender. When we had their attention the level of service, knowledge of the menu and friendliness was excellent. 3. I think this goes hand in hand with a nostalgic old hotel but worth mentioning..... The rooms seemed very private and quiet. Never heard the neighbors. However, the doors seemed to be thin, so when people were walking by they sounded as if they were in the room. We could not help but wonder what they could hear coming from the room as they walked by. Maybe this is more typical of the single queen Jacuzzi suites. The room is smaller and the bed is very close to the door. I suggest bringing a Bluetooth speaker to play some music if you are planning romantic intimate time. Hands down, we will be back again. Maybe book out further and do a little research on room availability. The Jacuzzi suite was definitely worth it. We will definately be eating at the Port next time. An amazing atmosphere. Do NOT stay in rooms on the southwest side of the building unless you enjoy the sound of running trains and very loud startling horns every time one runs through (right next to the hotel) about 4 to 5 times per night and several per day! Cut my stay short due to not being able to get any rest. Front desk didn't really even blink an eye when I said I was leaving early for this reason. read more

Usually ulterior motives bring me to a destination. In this case the MS foundation was hosting a dinner and education event. When I found out it was here I informed my husband we had a chance to go. It was lent so I called ahead of time to let them know we would need a fish preference. I think we were the only ones with a special request. The salmon was huge, crispy, and tender, in other words perfect. The event was on the third floor next to the bar/restaurant. So they put on a great banquet. We spent the night. I always request a handicapped room for the bathroom facilities. I love the layout of the room, and you do get a TV, which is necessary for us even in this historic setting. Service at the front desk is great. Only complaint of discomfort was the mattress, ugh. One of the most awesome things was the room faced the train station, the sounds and lights were magical. Compared to the TC hotels, this place is cheap. Get it on your bucket list and go. read more

Had my grandfather's memorial service at the St. James today. The room we picked out was nice, and the food we selected turned out to be pretty decent. But the service- the SERVICE WAS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. From the event planner who MAY have been there 3 months and misquoted prices and messed up the original event contract to the servers who seemed completely disinterested and served the food, dumped it and left. NO cleanup, NO service, NOTHING. They will be hearing from my family, that's for sure. read more

This hotel is a center piece to the city of Red Wing. It overlooks the Mississippi River and is historic in nature, complete with Victorian guestrooms. Located in downtown RW, it gives you the opportunity to visit a bunch of crappy stores. OK FINE, so they are not stores I would visit, but many good folks might. And they will enjoy them. For folks like me, the river walk is right out your back door. The hotel has two full service dining options (with great food) and an in-house bar, which is unusual for this city. If you are ever touring through this historic area, I would definitely recommend this hotel over all others. read more

The St. James is a beautiful iconic hotel in the city of Red Wing. In many categories the St. James is worth a 5 star review; including the cleanliness, historic charm, and the location - excellent proximity to anything you will want to do in Red Wing. The hotel went down a few notches in our book due to the service we experienced before and during our stay. We rented the Ironworks Flatt (a very large suite) at the St. James. We were unaware that the Flatt was disconnected from the hotel - which was lovely, but never communicated to us prior to our stay. One week before our stay we called the front desk to see if we could get early check-in, and it took about 15 minutes on the phone to get an answer because the employee at the desk had to continue calling her manager to ask each question we asked. The employee explained she was new and unfamiliar with policies, we thought the interaction took far to long but we didn't mind. When we arrived for our stay, my partner unloaded all of our bags onto a large cart as I worked with the front desk to pay for the stay. The front desk women had trouble at first finding our reservation, but after several moments found it (no big deal). The interaction took approx. 15 to 20 minutes, we then had all of our luggage loaded onto a cart in the front lobby - on our own no assistance (again no big deal - more informational for those looking to stay at the St. James). We asked the front desk if we were on the 5th floor, because our room number was 510 and she replied that she was unsure where the suite was located. It was clear at this time the front desk lady knew we were in a special location, not on the 5th floor, but did not know where or how to direct us there. She proceeded to try calling a few numbers but no-one answered her. To make a long review shorter, we spent 10 to 15 minutes outside looking for a suite, with a large rolling cart loaded with our expensive luggage. When returning inside, we had asked the front desk lady if there was anyone she could call to help guide us to our suite and she called someone working in the bar upstairs. The gentlemen working the bar could not leave the bar to show us, as he was apparently the only person serving guests upstairs. At this point we were pretty upset we'd been at the hotel for over 30 minutes and no-one could point us to our room. Eventually we pushed the cart around again on our own, and ended up finding our room through the parking garage. Although head of catering came down to check on us after we'd found our room, it was far too late to makeup for the experience we had upon arrival. If you look at other reviews from 2019 - management may be having issues at the moment and many people are having trouble getting in contact with them. Ultimately we love the St. James and would like it to remain intact and a nice place to stay, however, we were very disappointed with our experience and the training given to the front desk staff. read more

During my work-related travels, I've dined at many high-end restaurants. I believe the dinner my husband I had at the St. James Hotel in the rooftop restaurant behind the hotel was the best meal I've ever eaten. The stuffed haddock (gluten free) was superb. I had planned to give my husband a bite of the fish, but it was so good I ate it all myself. I would order it even if I wasn't gluten free. It's that good. My husband said his bison-elk burger was outstanding as well. His sweet potato fries were a little soggy, though. Service was also friendly and very efficient (thank you to Elliott, our server). The building is old and overflowing with character and charm. The dining options are better than adequate: the Sunday brunch is awesome. Many historical notices are posted through the hotel, providing insight to the earlier years of the St. James Hotel. The shops are so-so; nothing special. The service was mostly excellent, the exception being one lady at the front desk. She was rude. She may have been having a bad day, so I'll let it slide. This time. Fabulous place! We were driving through Minnesota and were looking for a place to stay overnight. This place is so quaint yet newly renovated with beautiful wallpaper and subway tile. Do not stay here if you want a good night sleep. I'm staying here now, and it's 10 pm and at least 3 freight trains have rolled through here in the past 1/2 hour, blasting their horns. The hotel is lovely, but it's not worth it to have to be kept awake by freight trains. It's going to be a long night with our baby who keeps waking up despite having a sound machine and a fan. read more

After I quick visit to Mayo Clinic, both my wife and I were ready for some much needed rest. Even though our schedules only allowed just a one night stay before heading back to the extreme heat of ARIZONA in the summer, The St. JAMES delivered in every way. My brother and sister in law frequently stay at the St. JAMES and referred us here. We had a friend travel over and meet us for lunch on The Veranda and it was a perfect day paired with an incredible meal. The service was quick and efficient and made us feel like we were welcome to stay as long as we wanted. While we booked this at the last minute and all they had was a king suite with no view, the room was large and very comfortable. At 9pm I needed an ice cream fix and the front desk directed me to the bar on the 5th floor. Upon arrival, I learned that the front desk had called in advance and they fixed me right up. My wife and friend loved the shopping and spent considerable time and money finding just the right items for each of them. Cap it off with a walk along the river and watching the boats pass by and I could feel the stress fall off. As the saying goes, I'll be back! read more

The best romantic break hotel, within an hour of the Twin Cities. The rooms are spacious, historic, and romantic without being too B&B fiddly and cheesy. The beds are awesome, with really good bedding and a pillow menu, if you shouldn't like the pillows you already have. The views of the river are romantic and you can enjoy all of this as semi-clothed as you could wish with their excellent room service. I had one of the best pots of tea of my life, made all the better buy the art deco tea pot and tray it was served on. They have all the boutique hotel amenities like bath robes and fancy bath products. If you are outdoorsy you probably won't mind taking a romantic break in Red Wing, versus the far more popular Stillwater. There are some good restaurants and bars in Red Wing, though, just not as many as in places like Stillwater that cater to the upscale Twin Cities clientele. One of the best things to do in this part of the country is to take a romantic drive on some of the local winding roads around the river. These are some of the best driving roads in the state. In the fall the colors are great and in the summer, the river offers some relief from the heat. read more

well the st james. after many years of coming to red wing we decide to stay the night here. i decided to book the "premium" room for a few extra bucks. i can say the room lived up to my expectations. nicely appointed with a big bed some of the lighting is antique or faux antique the wall paper is a little dark so it reminds me of my grandmas house. the room is fairly large and the bathroom is clean. lots of hot water. nice. i will say this you can see and feel the age of the building. which is ok. i would not recommend the room upgrade however. i am willing to bet the regular rooms are just as nice as this one. come here expecting old and historic do not think it is completely updated like the Ivy Hotel in minneapolis and you will be just fine read more

We stayed at the St. James one night to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, since this was where we stayed on our honeymoon. When checking in, we had given our names, and within one minute of that, my husband asked if they had a discount for AAA members. The clerk said they do, but it was too late to get it (10%) because we were already checked in. I asked if they could give us a credit on our card for the account, and Alex said no. She did not offer a voucher for the restaurant bar for that amount, or anything like that. I asked a couple of times if there was anything she could do. She just said "no, you've already checked in." I was tempted to ask for a manager - surely this person has tainted many other peoples experiences with her arrogant and uncaring attitude. I've read other reviews that specifically named her by name, and yet she is still working the front desk. Lesson learned from this: St. James Hotel DOES have a AAA discount, but you need to mention it BEFORE checking in. Lesson 2: even the best vacation getaway can be tainted by poor service. I doubt we will go back here again. read more
