We just got home from our July 4th vacation. Thanks to Kirk and Wendy for making a great stay in Red Wing. There are train tracks to cross and luckily did not get one to block our entry. At the entry, Kurt greeted us and led us to either bicycle or spinning room since the house was to ourselves. We went for the bicycle room since Kurt said it was roomier and quieter. It was a decent size and the bed was sooo comfortable. We had dinner at the Red Wing Brewery and returned back later that evening. The hot tub was nice and also on our floor was a fridge with some soda, ice tea, and other cold beverages to enjoy. Also, we could get either decaf coffee or hot tea on the main floor dining room with a Keruig. Late at night, the trains would pass by but the ear plugs were good for me and my wife. Afterwards, the morning we were greeted with fresh brew coffee and hot water for tea. Also, there was a banana nut pound cake with some butter spread to enjoy before breakfast. At 9AM, we were served a 3 course breakfast. First, we had a parfait with fresh fruit. Next, we had scrambled eggs, bacon, and a dutch apple pancake. Last, we split some homemade ice cream with rhubarb. Before checking out, Kirk gave us a tour of the barn and the pavilion. They were out of the Red Wing mugs but we got tips to visit downtown stores. So, we made it to the Red Wing Shoe visitor center/museum and the Uffda store. P.S. This used to be known as Round Barn Bed & Breakfast & Bread. But, they no longer bake bread in the fire brick oven due to Mn dept of health. So, it is known as Round Barn Bed & Breakfast.

We knew within the first 15 minutes at the site that we wanted our wedding a year out to be at Round Barn Farm. The arrangement of the buildings makes for a private, verdant, intimate space and the proximity to the Twin Cities made travel for far-traveling relatives simple. Their team led us through every step of the way and we felt easy putting our trust in their ability to plan and execute on the day of. Of the 170 or so invitees who attended, the most common compliment was the beauty and perfection of the wedding venue. They work with preferred local vendors, which makes selecting partners all the easier. I can't compliment them enough and hope you consider stopping by.

We were able to take a golf cart to take photos on the golf course which was so fun, the food was incredible, and the deck was a crowd favorite hangout spot at night. Everything was set up when we got there, so decorating could begin immediately and staff was always around to answer questions or help. I highly recommend the Skyroom!

A month before the wedding, we scheduled a…read morefood tasting with the facility caterer, the only catering option the Skyroom allowed us to have. They would not allow us to hire another caterer. The food selection was minimal, and the quality and presentation were mediocre. The only dish that was excellent was their risotto stuffed peppers. It was prepared well and was delicious. After making a few adjustments to the menu offering, we completed our selection, expecting to get the food we selected and paid for on the wedding day. However, that did not happen. When the food was served at the wedding, the spaghetti was cold, and the risotto stuffed peppers were made with quinoa, not risotto; the dish had zero flavor and was inedible. Additionally, the other meal selection, spaghetti, was served cold, and as I observed the room, many of the guests pushed their plates away after only a few bites of both meals. The third meal we chose was chicken. That was the only meal the guests mentioned they enjoyed. My husband and I were highly disappointed with the catering at the Skyroom and very frustrated at the catering company, which charged us for meals that were misrepresented at the tasting and served cold. We are also disappointed at Skyroom for not offering another catering option or allowing us to hire a caterer with a better food selection, primarily since they did not deliver what was promised. The Skyroom is a beautiful facility for a wedding, but unless they change their caterer or offer another option, I would think twice about having a wedding at this facility.

But we still enjoyed it. Though I was glad the outdoor dining area was not open yet because it wouldn't have felt as private in our room with that area being part of the view. Please keep in mind that this is a historical hotel so the rooms are odd angles. The bathroom was very small and the toilet sat angled in front of the vanity, so it was a little cramped to try to stand in front of the mirror/sink to get ready (hair, makeup, etc.). I absolutely adored that the room numbers outside the room are vintage post office box doors. The trains blow their whistles a lot at night passing through and this woke us up each night, so keep that in mind if you are a light sleeper. We enjoy trains and liked seeing them (so that is a pro/con, we liked the trains, just not at night when sleeping). We were there for our anniversary and I was pleasantly surprised there was a bottle of champagne on ice in our room upon our arrival with a nice card. So very sweet. I found the bed to be extremely comfy! So much so I meant to see what brand mattress it was but I forgot to look. Darn! The hotel itself is beautiful, I enjoyed walking through when we came and went. It was fun to browse the few shops. Although I was disappointed to not find anything with the St James logo on it, was hoping to buy a souvenir of some sort with the hotel logo (coffee mug or wine glasses?). Maybe I just missed seeing them if they have them? In all we enjoyed our stay and wandering throughout town for a few days.

The little barn houses, the field, everything was inviting and elegant, yet rustic and homey. The outdoor ceremony area was also great, with benches set up, a beautiful gate for the married couple to walk in through, etc. The staff were super atttentive and friendly. My only gripe was that they did not seem well equipped to handle super cold weather (there were some blankets) but the ceremony was super chilly and I wish the heat was turned on more in the dining area.

I had arrived early to get ready at the bridal suite which was in one of the little buildings. It had the restrooms inside on the first floor & the bridal suite on the second. There were only three of us bridesmaids, but even with others stopping in to see the bride, there was plenty of room to get ready. The best part was that there was a lot of natural lighting & lots of mirrors for us to use. I didn't see the grooms suite but there was a separate building for that as well! The wedding ceremony area had luscious grass with seating benches for the guests & big wooden doors for a grand entrance. It was nice for the wedding party to be able walk down & then have a pause (with doors closed) as the bride stepped up for her entrance. The reception was then held inside the big barn building just off to the side from the ceremony. The space was large with wooden tables & chairs set up for guests. Although we didn't use it, there was a firepit next to the building for use as well! Drinks & appetizers were served before the reception started at the side barn building. It was just a few feet away from the main reception. My favorite though, was the barn space that was first seen when entering the venue from the parking lot. Our friends had opted to utilize it for photos to put inside the guest book! Overall, a cute venue. Since I was a guest, I don't know any of the logistics of touring / reserving the space but my friend (the bride) did say that they're booked up pretty much every weekend!
