Stomping our way to St. Mary's, my husband and I were fortunate to catch Felix Hernandez's 'Rhythm Revue' segment here. The heat is on, temperature was rising and everyone, for a moments notice, experienced all the excitement with a lot of Boogaloo, salsa and a few selections of classic soul, disco and funk music in a local, South Bronx Park. Bronx resident or not, if this music is up your alley, I'm so sure, you'd bust a groove, too. But, Central Park it's not, nor does it come close. Does St Mary's Park need a major litter-free overhaul? Damn skippy. But the fact is, that residents in this section, all summer long, can enjoy lively events and a little piece of nature in the heart of the South Bronx.

So I decided to come here just to check it out before missing it out and regretting it that I could have gone in for free and would have to pay to come in the future... Btw, I heard that SRW was better than Steep Rock East (SRE), that's why I came to SRW instead of wasting my time with SRE, and I was right! I think it is a waste of time to go to SRE... The rating for this gym is: Meh, I have been to better climbing gyms in NYC The basement locker and bathroom lighting was super dim. I couldn't see much. Perhaps they should use higher wattage and higher colour temperature bulbs. The other reviews are right, there is no shower This place looks small and tiny. It consists of two sections for bouldering only: 1st Fl and 2nd Fl. Second Fl was just a short wall and about two dozen boulder problems. First Fl had taller wall and a cave. It had more boulder problems than the 2nd Fl At least the rating system is based on V's instead of colouring system. And the bouldering problems are more straightforward and less gymnastic than Vital's. I guess it was refreshing to try out other bouldering problems and style. Similar to needing to try out other restaurants after eating in the same place for long time... The gym had tall and clear windows that allowed natural light in. Passerby could see what is going on inside the gym and perhaps pique their curiosity. But, the design is quite similar to other gyms like: MetroRock Williamsburg. So, no awe from me! It was quite painful to find parking at this place even for a Sunday afternoon when parking was free. I had to park approx. 6 blocks away and walk to the gym... Definitely won't be coming to this place in the future when there are better gyms elsewhere in NYC...

Children playground provided many fun equipment was in full use though when I visited during lunchtime. Park was very clean and well attended by staff sweeping bench seating areas. The park gives the community and hospital staff a place to play, relax on breaks or to have an outdoor lunch. I enjoyed my time at the park after spending much of my morning at the hospital waiting room.

Do I join an expensive gym in Manhattan which would be under-utilized since I come-and-go? I was excited to discover the city-run Constance Baker Motley Rec Center on East 54th Street. They've got a fitness center, gym, track, pool and -- hold onto your hat! -- my annual membership (since I'm a senior citizen) is $25!!! Can you believe it?! Even if you're not old it'll only cost $150 per year. In Manhattan! I've read complaints that seem to permeate the facility. But for my needs -- and I really just joined -- it's great. The fitness room is somewhat antiquated, but has enough of what I want and so far (knock wood) everything works. There's a decent locker room, the staff is polite and the building itself, which dates to 1911, is pretty cool. Curious about the name, I learned that Ms. Motley was an American civil rights lawyer and the first African American woman appointed to the federal judiciary. (I love that the city pays homage to her.)

This…read morepark/ playground definitely gets packed on those hot and sunny days but that does not deter me from bringing the kiddies here since there are so many different things to play on. They have this long, caterpillar thingy that the kids can crawl through, many swings and slides, climbers and more! The kiddies love it here and I have enough viewing space to keep my eye on them. The park was formerly known as Macombs Park since it is on the corner of Macombs and 176th but last year they re-named it to Galileo after they expanded and remodeled a bit more. Can't wait til the summer when they turn the sprinklers on through the statues and clean it up much better. A great park for kids/ families.

The pool as in the structure is great and great location…read more I went Saturday July 6, 2024. This was my very first visit and my very last visit. The staff is extremely unorganized. There are alot of kids/teenagers parentless skipping the line. That matters because they have a limit... I think like 130.. I could be wrong it may be a bit more. The wait times are extremely long! I waited in line like an hour to get a wrist ban, (this is because the pool closes like an hour and if you want to be anywhere near the start of the line you better be there top of the prior hour) we got sent to another line after the wrist ban line to be let in after the pool was to open back up. After the start time elapsed, we were all still standing there another half hour or so. Then they started letting the folks on the line still receiving wristbands in before us. They need better staff there that actually give a F and can handle and police the crowd of children better. Speaking of police! There are police there, they did absolutely nothing except drive their car back and forth on a foot path that was over crowded with people. Very unsafe... they should park the car and patrol the park on foot. Veteran officers would have def known better. When the crowd of people didn't move fast enough, they blew the siren.. not the extremely loud one, but still. Once We finally got into the pool, there were so many people mosty kids/teenagers horse playing that made it impossible to even enjoy the experience. We stayed about half an hour and left. We ended up playing in the sprinklers at the front of the park the remainder of the night and had a blast. For a good time, def do not go to this pool. The park is dope though.

The park is very secluded from everything so not many people know about it which could be a good thing. The staff are friendly and do their job right, they will not let you into the pool without a proper swimming suit. I hope the park is kept up well and isn't left forgotten like many things in the Bronx.

The playground it's always clean and has bathrooms. The park has Basketball courts, tables , chess and even hand bars. The park is also good for babies as there are baby swings. This park is not the best park for large dogs since there are a lot of kids running around. I would say if you keep walking down to Bronx park east there is another field with lots of space to walk around for larger dogs or even small dogs. the wonderful times and memories of zimmermans playground for me , siblings , friends ,warrants 5…read morestars as it was ours playground growing up in the bronx on olinville ave . many old timers called it the concrete square as it was square shaped with different sections with the basketball courts , swing set area , the slides , checker tables and the many benches to sit and shoot the breeze with friends and neighbors . the playground is named after abe zimmerman who owned the corner candy store on olinville and allerton ave , he was a holocaust survivor and would educate us kids about the permanent numbers across his arm . after school and on the weekends the playground was our hangout regardless of the weather . i was not much of a basketball player but the swings was my thrill and i would go fairly high swinging back and forth until i needed a rest . back in the day there was no curfew and playground was open 24/7 and the playground was well maintained and kept clean and safe . as the mid 80s came and the crack horror era arrived the playground was not a place for kids and even though i moved away i would still visit my old hood and was shocked what a dangerous mess the playground turned into . as time passed the crack and crack heads were gone and the playground went thru a major makeover for the better and now the kids and families are back just like the good old days . i will always cherish the memories of zimmermans playground and i am not the only one .
