It was also my first time using a reformer and I was a bit nervous about the experience since I haven't worked out in years but, the instructor Skylar S was amazing. She took her time explaining the machine, was very attentive to everyone in the class and made the class enjoyable and fun. I purchased their new members deal that included 2 classes for $40 and can't wait to go back. Classes are small with about 8 reformers for each class which makes the experience intimate and not intimidating. There are lockers for you to place your things in and a nice bathroom for anyone who may need to change clothes before class.

A few of the classes/instructors are really great (Mimi and LG, for example), but I generally found it really distracting how MUCH all the instructors talk so much during the classes. ***REVIEW FOR POOL ONLY***…read more Oops, I almost gave this aquatic facility three stars, then realized that it's not the pool's fault that I do not live way up in the Bronx. Also not the pool's fault that I didn't consult the printed schedule (available AT the rec center)...for the adult lap swim times seem to change at will every couple of weeks. Having last confirmed via telephone (718-402-5155) that there was swimming from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, I took a trip there this past Tuesday. From my work in Soho, I boarded the 6, switched to the 5, and took it to 149-3rd Ave. Walked East on 149th (with the big McDonald's to my left across the street) and progressed past a whole bunch of discount clothing stores, discount DVD stalls, and Latin American bodegas...then past a creepy deserted lot with someone's apparent haunted house project (a howling wolf with a bloody mouth next to a casket) behind a chain linked fence. Took a right onto St. Ann's, which borders a magnificently wild looking park whose mysterious hills prematurely closed out the last traces of the sun. Almost as was my experience visiting St. Johns pool in Brooklyn, I saw the basketball courts first, and here, too was an ice cream truck with its warbling tune making the rounds about uninterested b-ballers on the crisp fall night. Except this area was a lot nicer on account of the pastoral park. I walked a few more blocks past other facilities belonging to the Parks system, and kind of had to go up an alley-like ramp to the recreation center. The entrance was in the back with a wide sweep of concrete in front of it; oddly inaccesible to cars (but this is a good thing). The locker room had an extremely high ceilings. There was a pretty clean changing area with plenty of space. The lockers were the medium-tall ones with hooks intact, and didn't have filth on the bottoms. At one point, a lone woman walked in and started saying, "What are you looking at?" Involuntarily, I flinched, and she let out a belly laugh saying she had been yelling at her supervisor right outside the door. She then continued complaining about her day while I modestly got into my suit. The bathrooms were in the next area down a long hall, and the showers in the area even farther down the same hall. Chilly. The floors of the toilet stalls were fillllthy; that brownish, damp, sticky filth that makes your whole body itch on contact. It was a relief to go to the showers, but I did not linger because the curtains looked too much like body bags or operating scrubs. I went into the one stall with a perpetually running spigot and a curtain that had been torn down. It took a while to saturate my suit. Then, the doors to the pool were locked, and I knew something was wrong because I saw a bunch of teenagers and no lanes. I knocked desperately until a disturbingly overdeveloped teen came and let me in. The lifeguard told me that Tuesday was currently Family Swim. "Can I still swim here?" I asked. "No, it's gotta be a family," he said. I looked around, and saw no families...and the guard must have felt for me because he whispered, "But I'll let you go today. You came a long way, right?" he chuckled. Damn right. The pool was surrounded by bleachers. It was clean, deep (8 ft.), and blue. Such a shame that there were no lanes and everyone was swimming across it sideways, but there was a semblance of order in the swimmers' behavior that I really appreciated. There were girls training with the lifeguard and dudes having breatholding contests in the quiet corners of the tank. Since this was my first swim since my 10K race, the environment gave me license to take it easy while still getting the blood flowing. There's something about the Bronx that's really LOCAL. Being an obvious transplant to any part of this metropolis, I always feel sorely out of place but delighted to be there. The greatest discomfort isn't in catcalls, but in silent stares and surprised glances. I won't say it's racial or economical. It's just a feeling why I know I'm a foreigner on this turf and how they know I am as well. But I was welcomed at the pool, and at a pizza place on a corner of 149th where I chased the rising bile for the Yankees on TV with bites of a tangy square of Grandma pizza. The train home was long, but hey, it was direct on the 2 line. If I lived here, this would be my spot. I'd just have to call the VERY DAY I was going to swim laps just to make sure it was a lap day.

The pool is not as good, but as a public pool, it's not bad at all. The pool is warm, nice, and the water is not the cleanest I would say bit it's alright. Just a tip: always check the schedule before going. Because they have different programs for different age groups, so, you might get disappointed if you go on a wrong day. The gym is fine. Its not that big but it had room for me to work out comfortably without any problem of space. They should upgrade their exercise machines though.

The pool as in the structure is great and great location…read more I went Saturday July 6, 2024. This was my very first visit and my very last visit. The staff is extremely unorganized. There are alot of kids/teenagers parentless skipping the line. That matters because they have a limit... I think like 130.. I could be wrong it may be a bit more. The wait times are extremely long! I waited in line like an hour to get a wrist ban, (this is because the pool closes like an hour and if you want to be anywhere near the start of the line you better be there top of the prior hour) we got sent to another line after the wrist ban line to be let in after the pool was to open back up. After the start time elapsed, we were all still standing there another half hour or so. Then they started letting the folks on the line still receiving wristbands in before us. They need better staff there that actually give a F and can handle and police the crowd of children better. Speaking of police! There are police there, they did absolutely nothing except drive their car back and forth on a foot path that was over crowded with people. Very unsafe... they should park the car and patrol the park on foot. Veteran officers would have def known better. When the crowd of people didn't move fast enough, they blew the siren.. not the extremely loud one, but still. Once We finally got into the pool, there were so many people mosty kids/teenagers horse playing that made it impossible to even enjoy the experience. We stayed about half an hour and left. We ended up playing in the sprinklers at the front of the park the remainder of the night and had a blast. For a good time, def do not go to this pool. The park is dope though.

The park is very secluded from everything so not many people know about it which could be a good thing. The staff are friendly and do their job right, they will not let you into the pool without a proper swimming suit. I hope the park is kept up well and isn't left forgotten like many things in the Bronx.

Bronx this past January and am slowly getting familiarized with the area. Being a b-girl and all, it was inevitable that I would end up in here at some point, right? =] For anyone who knows me, I've been a dedicated Brooklyn-head and Harlemite during my time in NYC. Yes, I've also been known to sneer at the hardcore gentrification of both of my old 'hoods, but I definitely got used to the wine shops/health food stores/restaurants that come with all that. Due to the 2008 market crash, the "SoBro" tag has yet to fully realize itself, but there are a few signs that it's encroaching. One could say that South Bronx Yoga is a sign of the times, but it's not a snotty, overpriced yoga studio that caters solely to the local gentrifiers. The teacher/yogi Amy Moran has been running SBY for about 8 months out the beautiful 810 Studio, a mere 3 blocks away from and in the shadow of the most overpriced thing in NYC: Yankee Stadium. Classes are $10 (or $3/sliding scale) for an hour long class that begins with some centering, chanting, poses, inversion, rest and end chanting, making it both affordable and accessible to all. It was not too packed, and people varied in levels from beginner, to people who had taken 5-10 classes previously, to me (dancer and former yogi-wannabe). Though home-grown, SBY provides a limited number of yoga mats, as well as support blocks, straps, blankets, and tissues. Classes are only a couple of times a week and clearly listed at www.southbronxyoga.com. Definitely go to the website and reserve a spot in class if you plan to go. I have to say that I've taken a LOT of yoga classes all over the country, ranging from the real stuff to the craptastic-$20-run-through-poses-scary-fast-just-so-you-sweat-but-the-teacher-don't-know-shit classes. I went in with an open mind, and Amy's guidance got me centered in a way that I have missed over the past few years of not practicing. I can do all this stuff by myself, but it's definitely better to practice with this humble sangha. Anyone in the neighborhood can benefit from Amy's dedication to her yoga practice that inspired her to start SBY. Overall, it's a great place for a beginner or an advanced practitioner who would just like some guidance from a well-centered yogi and to practice with others. And it rocks that if you live in the BX that you can walk here!
