Day of surgery: April 9, 2026 Surgery: Belly Button Hernia When I first met with Dr Paul James, I was told for my belly button hernia I was going to get clued up no stitches and a mesh would be placed to cover the hole. The day of surgery once again I was told by Dr Paul James and the nurses the sam thing no stitches and I'm getting glued up with the mesh. I get out of surgery I didn't get explained anything. I wasn't told how to take care of the wound. After a week I took off the bandage and I found that there was a piece of wire sticking out of my belly button. Weeks past and it was still there, I decided to follow up with Dr Paul James. When I went he told me that he decided to not use the mesh and decided to use stitches, but stitches that were placed inside me not on the outside of my belly button. He didn't want to give a reason why the game plan changed and why I wasn't told. I have called Dr Paul James' office 5 times and still haven't gotten explained why he changed the original plan I was told for surgery which was no stitches and I'm getting glued up with mesh covering the hole. Almost 2 months later and I still don't have an answer. The day of surgery I told the nurses that I am scared of needles. Most of the time after making that statement the nurses are more focus on me being calm and relax because they know this situation stresses me out. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case at this hospital. The anesthesiologist that it was funny to pretend that he was going to put a needle into my check to put me to sleep before surgery. I will say I truly didn't appreciate that, it made me feel very uncomfortable. While he kept doing it and pretending to put the needle in my neck, I told him to stop multiple times. The emergency room was the only place I can go to because I am from out of town and I would've rather sat and rotted in my car than come here. I would not ever step foot back in here. I was recently a visitor at St. Joseph Hospital on 5/26/26 as a health care worker myself. I was very sad to see the condition of this hospital. My mother and aunts worked at St. Joseph as nurses for many years. I was born at this hospital, and growing up, St. Joseph was always the hospital my family used. First of all 1919 LaBranch was always the main entrance to the hospital I went there only to encounter a homeless encampment which as a woman alone was scary hospital looked abandoned I called the main number asked how do I get in I was there to visit a patient was told to go to the emergency room the glass doors looked awful looked like someone took a greasy towel and wiped them definitely not the hospital I remember honestly made me cry at the sight of what this hospital has become. I was directed to the 2nd floor after signing in with security. I got there and the lady at the desk told me visiting hours were over at 8:00 P.M. I asked her to call the nurses' station. It was 8:10, and she had the nurse on speaker phone, and she said no, she could not allow me to visit, or at least just leave my flowers security guard heard and offered to take the flowers for me, but was not allowed to do so. Very disappointed, no compassion, very unprofessional, the hospital looked like a ghost town. Please bring back the old St. Joseph Hospital. If the ER windows looked that way, I can imagine patient rooms; housekeeping needs to do something, that place was filthy. With FIFA coming to Houston, you would think St. Joseph would get the place into shape like it used to be. Very sad about what was once my beloved hospital. Something must be done to save this hospital as it is the only hospital Downtown. I was in the psych holding area. The hospital did a horrible job gluing a scar back together. I dropped my glasses into the bed frame and they haven't gotten it out until after I was already discharged from another hospital a whole week and a half later; I had to go back as a non patient to ask for them to get my glasses. the only good thing was that a nurse said "67" and it was the first thing to make me laugh. The employees were great buttttt the building is old and needs a serious deep cleaning. The bed I was in was horrid it has some nasty looking dried crap on it I immediately had my husband scrub it, the bathroom sink was not thoroughly cleaned so I scrub it myself the door frame had what looked like something dripped and dried there and the floor edges and baseboards need attention. After my wife gave birth the hospital and its staff kept giving us the run around when asked about getting my son circumcised. Every nurse told us something different as it pertains to the time frame in which it should be done. We asked serval times and each time was a different answer. We were discharged without my son getting circumcised because they said they wasn't a doctor in the hospital that was able to do it. The last nurse I spoke to named Briana in women's postpartum was very rude and condescending in the way she spoke to me when I was only trying to get clarification on the matter. It was evident that they were only concerned with getting us discharged as quickly as possible no matter what we desired. Avoid this hospital! read more

This is the worst hospital for any type of care. Miscommunication is killing the entire logistics ofm every department in the facility. I have been humiliated, mistreated, and neglected in this facility repeatedly. Unfortunately my doctor operates from the hospital and I have to report here. If I did not advocate for myself, I would be dead. They do not read the charts, nurses use Google to update their knowledge of meds, they don't know their patients, and are incompetent. I know damn well they made the bare minimum to pass their exams. Sad case of American best practices. We need to revamp America. Meals are cold and like slip for a dog. This November, on my birthday weekend, it'll be 2 years. There's a lot more to this story, decades of abuse, mental, physical, stuff I don't even want to get into, I'm going somewhere with this, bear with me. I'll make this as brief as I can, but it's going to take a little bit. My birthday weekend in 2023, I got in a physical fight with my stepdad. After years of his bullshit I finally lost it, and got arrested. I spent the weekend in jail. I never thought that would happen to me, but it did. When I was booked, they asked me if I took any medication. I do, every day, for a mental disorder. I haven't missed a day in well over 2 decades now, not a single day. I told them why and what I took, but they wouldn't give it to me. They did give a guy 2 XANAX because he had anxiety. Go figure. I went back and saw the judge in the jail after spending most of the night there. When I stepped out, one of the guards, a female guard, approached me and said, "Sir, you look like death, is there anything we can do for you?" I said, "They won't give me my medication, I need it." She said she was sorry, and she wished there was more she could do, but her hands were tied. Besides the attorneys there, she was the nicest person I talked to. I don't remember much after that, but apparently, I had a seizure and hit my head on a table or a chair. I remember waking up handcuffed to a hospital bed, very confused. I had no clue what hospital I was at until a friend made a Facebook post just now and mentioned this hospital, and something in my mind clicked. I still don't remember much. I remember signing some papers, but I have no clue what I signed. I remember a nurse or a doctor saying, "I know why you're here." I don't know what they meant by that, but I'm sure it wasn't nice. When I finally snapped out of it, kind of, I was left naked and told I had 15 minutes to leave or I would be taken back to jail. I ended up with a bag that I thought my clothes were in. In the bag were my shoes, a couple of misc items, and my cellphone. I was standing in the hospital naked with a blanket wrapped around me, and they kept asking me to give it back, and I told a nurse or doctor that I had no clothes. Someone finally brought me some paper scrubs to wear. I made my way to the lobby, and again I was told that I had a very short amount of time to call an Uber or a cab, to leave. Let me state this: I know I messed up, I know I was out of line, I should've walked away, and I didn't. That being said, you should not be treated as poorly as I was just because you're considered a criminal. I get that they don't know me from Adam, but I didn't do anything to the hospital staff, I didn't do anything to the guards. This was the worst experience of my life, and it will never happen again. My charges were eventually dropped, and I have nothing on my record. I wouldn't go back to this hospital if I needed a Band-Aid. read more

I've never witnessed staff as unprofessional, uncaring and cold as I have in their psychiatric unit. One of the nurses was loudly talking about fighting someone on the phone, while another got snarky with me when I asked if she could get on the phone to clarify some questions to my confused family since this was an involuntary visit. They denied me my required medicine, despite it being a very simple prescription. The food was so bad that it made me nauseous. I felt like I was treated like an inconvenience due to the staffs icy demeanors. The emergency room was perfectly fine, but if you need psychiatric care, go literally anywhere else. read more

Unfortunately my Wife becme ill while visiting Houston. St Joseph Hospital was the closest Medical Facility to our Hotel. Most of the Patient rooms should be Condemned. It's mind-boggling that it's an approved Facility and that Insurance companies would aprove. The rooms are equipped with broken furniture, with sharp edges my wife was cut by!! Had to beg for basic supplies such as tissues, basic toiletries, linens etc. Things that one would assume are basic. After two days supplies started to trickle in. We requested the broken hospital bed be replaced 4 different times. It oly took 3 days to accomplish this. The Staff is friendly and helpful, yet many are not experienced enough to be in this environment. ( I have been in Healthcare 30 years)! Nurses aids changing critical equipment that resulted in patient waste dripping on the patient, the IV Tower, and the bed!!!! One hand DOES NOT know what the other one is doing! Supplies dropped on the floor then administered to the Patient!!! This is UNACCEPTABLE in every sence of the word. Poor management of skill sets and abilities. However ALL OF THE CAREGIVERS were attentive and compassionate! The bathroom in our room was shamefully Discusting. Cracked floor tiles, mold, dirt and God knows what else in the Shower! Believe Me, i wouldn't bathe my dog in there! Hopefully You will NEVER need to use this place. read more

Don't even look at my issue. I tell them I'm diabetic and the teledoc told me to get to hospital right away. Was still turned away with my antibiotics and pain prescriptions. Terrible hospital! I filled out all forms of medications and allergies upon admission but they apparently ignored it. I was on a medication that reacted to opiates, what did they give me without informing me first? Fentanyl! I'm allergic to Tylenol, it gives me a rash. Their solution, give me Tylenol 3 (codine formula) and a benadry. l refused and just suffered. I couldn't eat solid foods for the first 4 days but when they finally sent dinner, it was disgusting, I didn't eat it it looked so bad. Nurses are always better than the doctors, they were great, I never really figured out who my doctors really were, they never introduced themselves. I guess when you only can get a job as a doctor at a low rate hospital you don't want your name getting out. Interestingly, when I had to go on my exercise walks with my IV stand, I'd do it after visiting hours and in the rotunda, all the awards in the display case stopped in like 2002. Obviously went downhill, I guess if you're unconscious you can't help it but I'd never go there on purpose. This facility caused us to lose our baby boy due to the negligence of the ultrasound technician and supervising physician. The imaging showed a problem that required immediate intervention with an Emergency Cerclage to save our child. Instead the tech downplayed the seriousness of this situation and told us not to worry about the cervical funneling shown on the images and to just talk to our doctor about it whenever we had our next appointment. My next scheduled appointment was a month away. I specifically asked if the imaging showed anything to be immediately concerned about. He said NO and that was absolutely untrue. After going home and starting to experience sharp pain and fluid leaking over the weekend, I went to the ER and learned that I was 5cm dilated at 21 weeks and would lose the baby because it was now too late to do a Cerclage to save our baby. He was born prematurely and at only 21 weeks he didn't meet their age requirement for NICU therapy to save premies. These people don't care about their patients and because of their negligence I had to bury my child when I should have had the joy of being his Mom. No parent should have the pain I live with every single day knowing that this didn't have to happen if proper treatment had been given by the medical professionals we trusted to provide care to us and our baby. read more

Update, 07/07/22: My surgery to remove a bolt out of my ankle got cancelled 06/28/22. The rescheduled date got cancelled a second time on 07/07/22. So my Physical Therapy is being delayed by this hospital. The excuse is ," lack of surgical staff." So patients are left in the wind. I'm currently searching for a new surgeon & surgery center, in my insurance network, to remove the bolt. 04/01/22: Had surgery for bone fracture. My assigned nurse in the OR was polite and personable. Her associates were also attentive. My anesthesiologist introduced herself and explained the road ahead. Woke up in recovery room under two warm blankets. The nurse on duty greeted me. So far so good. read more

My husband was ambulated to St . Joseph's as it was the closest hospital and he suffered a frightening neurological event in front of me. He woke up in the ER remembering nothing so I described the event to the ER nurse. They monitored him in the ER and then a room for observation. After 10 hours at St. Joseph's he had ent received any medical care. I hunted down his nurse to find out the plan. He said the on call doc wanted an MRI and then we could be released as he was feeling ok. They were unaware that they had to put stat on the order on weekends as he was on call. We finally were released without ever seeing a doctor and did follow up with a neuro and cardiologist. When the neuro put the MRI disk in his PC and it was blank. The neuro ordered an EEG and MRI which each cost several thousand dollars after insurance. This is not a hospital with medical staff. Everything was a disaster and I want people to avoid this place at all cost. We paid 20 K for him to sit there and do nothing. read more

Based on reviews, this was my last option. I understand that reviews are always based on everyone's experience so here's mine! 26 weeks pregnant to date 4/1/23. No April fools joke! I came as I was experiencing what I thought were issues with pregnancy. The security guard in the ER Room was very nice and the women who were at checkin were kind and helpful. I waited about 30'minutes before I was callled in. They checked my vitals and the nurses there were also warm-hearted. I wish I could remember everyone's names. Since I was 26 weeks they ended up sending me to LandD. In was transported on a wheelchair because it was a bit of a distance. Construction was being done which is a good thing as it means improvements. Once I got to L and D, I got a room and had multiple nurses come in. The first nurse, I don't recall her name, but she took my vitals, asked my symptoms, placed the machine on my stomach to make sure the babies heart was beating. She was right on point and basically told me what the issue was. Then a medical student in training came in, Blessing, asked the same thing the previous nurse did. Then Dr. Jhost came in and was briefed by Blessing. Dr. Jhost was very thorough with additional questions. Luckily I had all my labs and ultrasounds on my phone so she was able to have some type of medical references as I've never been seen there before. Mindy was a chaperone and offered assistance and additional explanations. They made sure that I wasn't dilated, did a brief ultrasound, checked my cervix. They made me feel confident and made me feel welcomed. They educated me on what DR. Google made seem worse. It was nowhere near what a google search revealed. The one thing that probably would aggravate anyone is being asked the same thing 10+ times but in any medical situation, I'd rather be asked 10,000 times by 10,000 ppl than to have information misconstrued. This isn't the worst hospital nor is the best hospital, but that the hospital personnel definitely wasn't the nicest nor the most helpful either. The Asian nurse on the 4th floor of the Behavioral Health building was rather rude, prejudice, immature, and unprofessional. She assumed that I didn't know if I had a friend to visit or not, she questioned how could I be visiting an Asian patient. Also, that the person I was visiting was incompetent, retarded, stupid, and less than human because of her situation of why she was at the behavioral health center. Now, I've been knowing this friend for about 8 years now and I know that she isn't any of those things. I kept reassuring the nurse that my friend is intelligent, kind, and was probably dealing with stress of her lifestyle is to why she was here because I know those things can happen. The nurse wouldn't even let me visit my friend and instead wasted my visiting time answering her unnecessary questionnaire to benefit her own knowledge. Finally, after the nurse spoke to my friend's family, the nurse gave me some time to chit chat with my friend. Of course, I asked her family for permission first before I visited her..I mean, how could have gotten her ID number or the fact that she was even in the hospital?!!!! After visiting for 20 mins and not the full hour. The nurse decided that it would be better for me to call my friend, instead of visit. I didn't have a problem with driving 30 mins from my house to visit my friend, though the nurse made it seem that way. Oh, but get this: they only have one phone for all the patients on the floor which isn't convenient at all. Every time I would call one of the nurses would pick up and ask for the name of the patient I was trying to reach and their ID number. Once I had given them that information, they would always give me a lousy message as if someone was already using the line and to call back in 30 minutes. Every time I called back within the time limit, the phone line was always busy. The number to reach the 4th floor is (713) 756-4123; I'm warning you now that you might not be able to get through. The 4th floor is so basic: the gathering room lacks a lot. It lacks pictures, it has just one TV on channel 2 and there isn't any visitation tables to sit and communicate with the person you are visiting. The best thing about this hospital was the two security guards. They were nice, very helpful, and didn't look at you the wrong way because you were visiting someone at the behavioral health building. They do have lockers, so you can place your things in before you go into visitation. The parking garage is close to the building, so all you have to is walk a short distance. You are absolutely better at receiving nicer care at Bayshore Psych unit than here! read more

My mother's primary doctor is at this hospital & thanks to my father's service in the US military, almost all of her medical needs are taken care of. What Medicare doesn't pay it is picked up by whatever "insurance" the military is providing for my mother so this is the place she goes for all of her medical care. After fracturing her back a couple of months ago, I have taken my mother here for various treatments starting with the Emergency Room. The ER was VERY clean & because of COVID-19 my temperature was taken & a mask was required. The security guard checked my purse & I was pointed to one section of the ER waiting room (the non-covid section). By then, my mother was in the back somewhere & I hate the fact that I could not be with her. Surprisingly, it was not a long wait, by the time I located the vending machines a nurse found me & said the doctor wanted to talk to me. Per the x-ray, mom fractured a vertebra & they wanted to keep her over the weekend because of her age. Leaving an elderly parent at the hospital can be a VERY scary thing, especially since there is absolutely NO visitation because of C-19. The ER nurses were very friendly & I liked how they handled my mother. I was given instructions on how to get in touch with my mom once they had a room for her & they answered all of my questions. Once my mother was in a room, I was able to talk to her. I will tell you, I loved her nursing staff. They were very communicative & even called me from their private cell phones when the phone in my mom's room stopped working (they replaced it pretty quickly). I called her & the nurses. A lot. They were always friendly & patient. When mom was ready to go home I got to meet one of the RNs taking care of her & was given information for her post hospital care & treatment. Dr. Murphy contacted us to make an appointment for a CAT scan several weeks after mom's hospital stay to see how she was healing. Making the appointment was easy & I was given directions on where to go. The staff at the imaging center were VERY nice & professional. They treated my mother with respect & patience. Check-in was handled quickly & before you could say bob's your uncle mom was ready to leave. So yeah, I'm a huge fan of this place. read more

If you ever need ICU these nurses and doctors are the most professional, courteous to patients and family members, attentive and caring. My mother had a medical emergency at work and the ambulance driver brought her here. 1st impression was homeless people and drug abusers laying at the ER entrance. The security guard was comical. He searched for metal and found none and made me wait an additional 20 min to get a name tag. The room was filthy and the lab technician could not get an urinalysis result after 3 hours. They discharged her without any assistance. The bathrooms did not have paper towels. It is still COvid and the majority of workers did not have mask on. Avoid this place at all cost. Got slammed with a $514 "physician's fee" 2.5 months after my ER visit. That wasn't the worst part though... I didn't receive this fee through the hospital. No, I was notified by a debt collector. Yup. Somehow, even though St. Joseph's ER had my driver's license on file, they sent my "physician's fee" to the wrong address (not even in the correct city, mind you). This review is for the women's center- I should've known this place was TERRIBLE when I went to register prior to delivery. I was on the first floor getting information when a young couple that was ahead of me were asking the receptionist for information because his pregnant girlfriend was bleeding. The receptionist said "the emergency room is across the street" and that's it. She did not offer a wheel chair or anything for that poor girl. The couple walked to the emergency room in 100 degree weather (if you're from houston, you know how harsh our summers are here). I SHOULDVE WALKED AWAY, but I didn't... I do not recommend this place to anyone with insurance. Please go to another hospital if you can. The day I arrived to get induced, I was told I was not on the list for a room. This was at 2:00 PM- okay, fine. So I called my dr over and over again until I got ahold of her. I was not the only pregnant person waiting for a room- several were turned away, which is terrible. Anyways, while waiting in the lobby, I used the restroom. DISGUSTING! As if this was a port-a-potty bad. I was so mad about that, I told the receptionist or security guards how bad that restroom was. They were rude about it, but I was about to have my first baby there and I was already beyond frustrated with this place. Anyways, four hours later, at 6:00 PM, I finally get a room. My first nurse was rude- ready to go home. They started the cervadil which is a 12 hour process. Inserted IV which was very uncomfortable. My overnight nurse was great, so no complaints there. But by the 12 hours were over, I got the same nurse to remove the cervadil and check it I dilated, she hurt me very badly, I cried so much: at this point I was already starting to feel pain, and they were getting me ready to head to the delivery floor so they suggested I take a shower, so I did. When I got out, in major pain, the billing person was there- ARE YOU SERIOUS! Asking my husband how we wanted to take care of the bill. LIKE, my child has not even came out and they're already asking us for our payment--- seriously? And to make matters worse, the lady kept saying "don't stress about the payment, you have to enjoy your experience". Okay lady. My husband was handing her his CC when my water broke. Yes, my water broke and I had to wait for that woman to return with our CC so I could be taken to the delivery floor. WTH?! We did not want to pay right then and there because we knew there were going to be more expenses added after delivery. We assumed we would pay when we would leave the hospital- but no. Okay, now in the delivery floor, in pain (NO EPIDURAL) at around 9:00 AM they start the pettosin process, but I notice the IV on my hand was hurting and swelling like crazy. They pricked me another two times on that hand, but just caused me to bruise like crazy, so they moved to my left hand and again, couldn't find the vein. They finally did on the last try, but I had so many bruises on my hands, plus contractions. Terrible! The nurse that was my actual delivery RN was phenomenal, delivery was great, but mainly because I got to finally meet my baby boy. Okay now moving on to the next two days in recovery- they gave me those pads that are placed under the sheets for people who wet themselves, like a training puppy pad instead of the actual pads since they were out. So I had this huge ugly thing between my legs post delivery which was so uncomfortable. The AC was not working in the room and my sink was not draining properly. Some of the nurses were great, but others were not. Three months after delivery I kept getting bills for pediatrician expenses, and delivery expenses. So terrible! This could've all been taken care of if they would've let us handle the bill when we left, but they do not handle it that way there I guess. Never again will I be going or recommending this hospital to anyone. Outdated, and overall terrible. read more

My wife had laparoscopic surgery here yesterday. Let's get the positives out the way first. Her surgeon, Dr. Howell, did a great job and communicated with me the entire way. My wife's nursing assistant, Sharon, was an absolute blessing. Now, let's start with the procedure. After the procedure finished, a staff member called my cell and said my wife was in recovery and they would update me in an hour. 3 hours passed and NO ONE called. I ended up calling them for an update and they said she was going to be transported to her room soon and they would call me. Again, they did not call me. I only knew she was in her room because Dr. Howell saw me in the waiting area. Once we there around 3pm, my wife's nurse did not do a single admission assessment until 6:30pm (right before shift change, seems convenient doesn't it?). I understand everyone is understaffed but 3.5 hours for a simple assessment? Her excuse was that my wife wasn't in the system yet. My wife was in extreme pain. The night nurse and the next day nurse were a lot better. The room was "clean", but pretty outdated. The AC did not work very well. Maintenance came by to look and just seemed pissed off to be there. This place sucks and they don't really want to help you unless you're probably dying... I came here because of a really bad uti(if yk yk ) , I literally was in tears balled up for hours just for him not to treat my pain ‼.. I literally couldn't pee and I forced myself to pee for him , I was aware of my uti I didn't need him to prescribe the uti pills (I have my own doctor for that ) or nauseous medicine I'm not even feeling like that, I sat in the hospital for 3+ hours in pain still in pain as I leave and he didnt care he just said some about the uti pills said he couldn't do anything about it and walked out ‼ just for them to try and bill me in the mail fuck him and this hospital they not getting a penny ‼ if a emergency happens and they bring you here you might as well leave unless you dying seriously ‼‍ read more

I have really only used the labs and radiology departments here. I specifically use the mammography services. The facilities are kind of plain and utilitarian in terms of decor, but the people are generally really nice. They really take care of your modesty here, which is nice for women who are more body shy. They don't keep the place freezing cold, either and that is nice. I have always had such a nice technician working with me and they do their very best to make sure you're as comfortable as possible and act very professional. I would recommend them to others looking for a mammography center for sure. The main facilities are pretty basic too. I like the chapel and the flyover going from the main pavillion to the Susan K Strake building is light and bright with displays of old medical instruments and such. The strange thing is as you walk across, you hear birds. They're piping bird song in over the PA in the flyover. It's kind of nice. The signs leading to your destination are not very good. If you get confused, ask someone. Deciphering their signs may not work. Lastly, if you are a patient here, you can pull up to the front entrance and get your car valet parked. Then, present the ticket where you're getting your care and they will validate it for you. Wooo hoo! Free parking downtown, I'm all over that. Otherwise, valet parking is $8 at the time of this review. read more

I had my doubts coming here because of all the bad reviews.. being % honest I loved this place the nurses took so much care of me and my twins I can't say something bad. Every nurse that I met it was great I even have to mention some names Ms. kelly, Ms. Debbie, Ms. Marissa,Ms. Sandra and Ms. Tracy I will always remember you with more than appreciation my pregnancy wasn't easy and some how you manage to make my stay so much better .
