My 86 year old father fell last week and has been a patient in St. Marks for several days. I am very pleased with the care he has received. Let me start off by saying that the staff here are great. I received excellent care. However, their billing department is another story. Upon my arrival I was told they were going to get with my insurance and I didn't owe anything at the time. Okay? A month later I received a bill in the mail for $2,000!!!!!!!!!!!! from the hospital and a separate bill for $250 for the doctor's services. Talk about surprise billing. How can they do this???? Why didn't they discuss this with me before they took me back????? So now I'm stuck with over $2500 in medical bills. Very very disappointed. This is EVERYTHING that's wrong with the healthcare system right now. How do they expect us to pay these bills?? read more

My mom had been treated at a larger hospital about 30 miles northeast for a leg wound for 12 plus weeks. Our family became increasingly concerned with the lack of healing progression so I made a stop into Dr White's office to explain the situation with his nurse, they saw her within 24 hours, admitted her into the hospital with 20 minutes and got her started on IV antibiotics and surgery the next day. Everyone was great and attentive to mom...if we would have let her leg go any longer, she would have lost it. Very thankful! read more

Been calling nonstop for the last 30 min. Rings rings rings and yep rings some more before saying call can not be completed as dialed. Call the billing and/or records department and it immediately says call cannot be completed as dialed. Furthermore the day I went to the ER for an ankle injury, I sat in the waiting room (alone no one else was waiting) for nearly an hr and didn't even give me anything to elevate my ankle. The nurse I dealt with once I finally made it back (her name was Nora I believe) was the only bright spot there. Absolutely ridiculous I can't get on the phone to obtain records for my dr to review. To Carol R of Austin. Sorry about your father. All of us are precious, and that must be a terrible thing to live with. But... everyone I know understands that minimizing the time until treatment for strokes and heart attacks is of paramount importance. The fact that your father DROVE HIMSELF to the ER, rather than calling 911, was, as you well know and somehow forgot to mention here, foolish. His treatment would have started sooner - when the EMS folks arrived. TPA could have saved so much damage, if only he had called 911 to minimize time until treatment. If only you had emphasized this with him, being a nurse and all, perhaps he would be in good shape now. read more

Great care in ER! My husband sustained a hand injury with an open, comminuted fracture of his dominant index finger in Nov, 2015...did not write review then, but noticed the 1 star reviews, so wanted to write my review now. The MD in the emergency room was fantastic - wish I remembered his name, I think he had training while in the military? Anyway, he did an excellent job with the injury and wisely referred us to a hand surgeon (got in to see surgeon the following day) in Houston for the surgery. Easy, normal billing process, clean facility, friendly competent staff. read more

I went in with extreme high blood pressure (229) I walked in under my own power, 5min. Check in and 20min saw the dr. Was in ER 3hr with an IV correcting my bp. Lab work was 3 times and medication lined out my bp, was give a prescription and told to visit my heart Dr. The next day, very smooth visit with good results. read more

The staff at St Marks are great. Check in is easy, appointments are generally on time. Radiology is where things went wrong for me. The radiologist is over confident in his ability to diagnose breast cancer. He should have diagnosed me almost two years ago and his diagnosis kept coming back wrong. Instead he had me coming back every 6 months and included an ultrasound with the mammogram. He speaks to you like you are a child and is way too over confident. after three episodes with him, I went to Dr. Shannon Juno. She is wonderful. She immediately sent me to ARA in Austin for a 3D mammogram and they immediately called for a biopsy. The result came back positive for invasive cancer. My oncology surgeon reviewed several reports by the St Marks Radiologist and said he should have diagnosed this two years ago. I am sharing the information because I hope someone can avoid what I am about to experience. I DO NOT RECOMMEND ST MARKS FOR MAMMOGRAMS. I also went to the McBroom clinic to get a referral for further testing. They did not listen to my concerns and the doctor asked why I even coming to see him. I will add a review for that doctor as well. St. Marks is not a resource for women's health. Save your life and go elsewhere! read more

I was treated in the ER on 4/1/2017. I received a bill and wanted to pay for the service I received. I called the hospital and got an automated answering response. After no one answered in the business office, I called back and got an operator. I left a message for Ms. Corona (?) to return my call. 1 week later, I have not gotten a call back. Remember, I want to give them $$$$$. I followed up this week and called again. I pressed the corresponding # on my keypad to match patient accounts. It rang and then I heard the extension does "not subscribe" to the service. Does St. Mark's even want my $$$??? It does not appear they do, but I bet they are supporters of the American Hospital Association and have their assess in Washington lobbying for continued Affordable Care Act!! If St. Mark's would get some staff to answer the phone, they could have my money. I got so frustrated, I called administration. The hospital administrator (Montelongo) was "in a meeting" and you guessed it, he hasn't call me back either. I don't know that there are actually people that work here, other than in the ER. I have 4 college degrees, one of which is a BSN. I am a practicing Registered Nurse. I would never want to work in a facility that is not accessible and whose main phone line is answered by a machine. 6/26/2017: Please believe YELP is a conduit for improvement because my posting on St. Mark's has resulted in contacts from a Board Member and the CFO. People read YELP and in my case, were responsive. Hopefully there will be changes for the better. I have given them an extra star for this effort. read more

I have visited St. Mark's ER several times with my mother. It has always been a good experience. Tonight, however, I had something to compare our visit to, and that made me realize how exceptional their staff really are. I had just come from Smithville Regional Hospital one town down the highway. I checked in my mother, who had dog bites, bruises, and bleeding on both hands. We are not the type to make a scene in public, but their service was SO bad. We left an hour into the visit because Mom's wounds had not been examined by any of their medical staff. You can read my 1-star Yelp review of their services if you are interested in hearing that story. At St. Mark's, by the time I'd filled out Mom's paperwork and joined her in the exam room, a doctor and two nurses had unwrapped my hastily -applied dressings, taken her vitals, and had her wounds soaking in soapy water. After determining what his treatment of her wounds would be, the doctor left to attend to another patient. One nurse filled out a patient report as the other dabbed the wound dry. The nurses played tag team to take care of Mom. They asked us questions and discussed medical issues that might affect her treatment. One got her a pain pill when we asked for something to take the edge off her discomfort. The deadening shots that the doctor gave Mom hurt like crazy. (I've never seen my mother in so much pain.) But they worked, and the stitches were quickly done. The doctor prescribed two kinds of antibiotics, answered our questions, and moved on to his next patient. The nurses returned to bandage Mom's hands and go over her post-visit care. When they were finished, one of them took her to the car in a wheelchair. We were done-- check-in, exam, pre-op, surgery, and post-op-- within an hour and a half. The staff was personable and professional from beginning to end. read more

Wish there was a 0-star rating. This place isn't even worth 1 star! I needed to get some blood drawn after a fasting period and being a LG area resident, thought this would be the most convenient option. I've been having my blood drawn quarterly for about 6-8 years now and am quite familiar and used to the process. This occurred just before Thanksgiving week. I arrived at the hospital around 9AM and was greeted by the front desk who was rather uninformative but told me to wait here. I was (after about 45min or so) then brought to the billing clerk who went through the whole spiel and signed paper after paper... etc. OK, they just do things differently. After about 20-30 min or so, i was then taken to another waiting room where we sat for more than an hour while we waited for my turn (keep in mind, this is LG and the line consisted of 1 person ahead of me). Finally, my turn and within 15 min or so i was on my way. This ended up being abotu 2-2.5hrs of my life to get my blood drawn. While the time is absolutely astronomical, the customer service aspect was absolutely atrocious. Of all the people I interacted with, ONLY the phlebotomist was friendly and cordial. Also, similar experiences with every other time i've had my blood drawn over the past 6-8 years, this process has taken me around 30 min from the time i walked in the door until i left and this was pretty uniform no matter who i was using (one time took me about 90 min because the person opening was running late due to auto accident... but i digress). Fast froward to receipt of bill. LITERALLY 4x more than the most expensive blood draw i've ever had (average cost is about $55 with highest being $70). Here, $238.70. YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME!!! After spending time on the phone with my insurance company, they were in network and they are contracted at this rate and they even acknowledged it was high, but that was their contract rate. Discussions with a local person in the medical field revealed that it is not uncommon for people to drive into Bastrop, Austin, or even Houston for this service due to their high costs. OK, i'm stuck with this bill.. and refuse to EVER use this place again... even if life or death (OMG, it's probably cheaper to die than to have these guys treat you for sinus infection). lesson learned. time to pay the ridiculous bill. I look online and find they have no online bill pay.OK, many organizations are in the dark ages and don't offer this service, not many in the healthcare field, but there are some. So, i call... and call.. and call. I have now called 4 numbers and no one answers. 8AM, 9AM, 9:30AM, 10AM. back to the customer service aspect: ATROCIOUS!! I would highly suggest avoiding this place short of life/death. There are other options which provide great customer service, fair pricing, and timely service. We were extremely happy with the service my husband received after a very traumatic forearm accident. We live in Austin and was visiting family in Flatonia when it happened. Everyone and we mean everyone from the ER staff all the way to when we checked out was professional, kind, compassionate, and explained everything to us. The overnight nurse was amazing and made sure he was comfortable and taken care of. She also made sure I was comfortable while staying in his room. He has a long road to recovery because of the nature of the accident, but because of the ER care, how quickly the orthopedic surgeon and team got to the hospital and the recovery nurse he will be able to recovery with his arm!!! read more

I have been a BSN RN for nearly 35 years having practiced in 8 hospitals in 4 states during that timeline. Cardiac/ICU/ER have been my specialty areas. This Thursday 2/16/2017 will mark the 4 year "anniversary" of my MOST significant other presenting to St. Mark's Medical Center after having driven himself w/o having notified anybody with a full blown evolving stroke....R side already near flaccid, expressive aphasia, & facial droop. It was a Saturday morning....0913 to be exact as I have only the medical records the hospital was so willing to send on up to Dallas 2/18/ (Monday) when he was Air Evac'd to Methodist where his son whom is a physician himself, was anxiously awaiting. Some key ER/inpatient records were surprisingly not sent. It was presumably determined by Charles Anderson ERMD that he was "outside the window" for TPA (clotbuster med) THOUGH he drove himself safely some 15 miles from his ranch & independently walked into the ER. Myself & my ERMD's know he was a candidate for TPA. For a Heart Attack TIME IS MUSCLE For a Stroke TIME IS BRAIN Acronym: FAST Is there FACIAL droop, Can ARMS be extended, Slurred SPEECH? TIME So, an emergent head CT was done & ruled out a bleed but substantiated ischemia/blockage. Having abandoned the idea of TPA, decision was made to admit him THERE under the care of a William Torkildsen who was obviously keen with the idea of admitting him into a semi-private room. Complete Neurological decompensation kicked in & when I finally found him the morning of 2/18/2013 he was near drowning in his secretions as he had an absent gag reflex. As I called son to relay the news it was not long before Air Evac (whom coincidently houses their bird directly behind the hospital) was gassed up & positioned for departure When they walked into the room to load him up 2 questions they had....when did this happen & why is he just now being transferred. I later recalled the scrambling nurse say "He didn't want to be transferred." Okay...he is NEUROLOGICALLY IMPAIRED & if he didn't want help WHY did he even leave the ranch (I would ask the jury - had that ever occurred) I NEVER saw any resemblance of an "ER" physician that morning either. 4 years later he cannot speak, cannot walk-w/c & bed bound & R side is completely flaccid. If there was EVER a story for 60 MINUTES, this is one. My intent on writing this is to not only share the BLATANT Medical Malpractice which occurred that Saturday morning, but educate the good people of Fayette Co. EMTALA: Emergency Medical Treatment & Labor Act This is a FEDERAL LAW which mandates an initial hospital screening, stabilization, TREATMENT AND TRANSFER to a hospital with higher level of care (if warranted) no matter what your economic status might be. In this case a STROKE CENTER such as St. David's Austin or Brackenridge Austin. Never Happened & St. Mark's was appropriately cited. I also pursued a CIVIL RIGHTS Age Discrimation lawsuit, though they amazingly didn't see this as such. I believe the rural ER setting is ripe for such repeat infractions to occur. As St. Mark's proudly displayed wordage of their alliance with Stroke Certified St. David's HealthCare on their website I found it fitting to reach the person of highest level within Neurology over @ St. David's & share this in its entirety, which I did @ length. In urban settings if a given hospital doesn't have a cath lab or is not a certified Stroke Center we want them transferred out of the ER - FAST & are proficient @ this. Fines are substantial for violating EMTALA & ALL OF US know that. St. Mark's & those 2 physicians know what EMTALA represents but one can only guess why they chose the path they did. My contention is that he was alone & was unable to advocate for himself PLUS he was dually insured ($$$$) a huge positive for any hospital in high anticipation of that revenue stream. Cell phone was dead when I arrived, but p/u was parked/locked right between the lines just outside the ER & phone charger was plugged in. Deductive reasoning by staff - ie., reboot the phone & find a contact person - was never considered. If you ever have to go to the ER for something you believe may be serious have someone accompany you or @ least have them know your whereabouts. Many folks out in Fayette Co knew my sweetie. He had just purchased somewhere in the neighborhood of 12-15K of beautiful Black Angus heifers/mammas @ the Fayette Co Fair that September prior....scholarship proceeds for the students I believe. He sooo loved ranching & it came naturally. THIS IS THE MOST PATHETIC/ SORRY HOSPITAL I HAVE EVER COME INTO CONTACT WITH....GOD help the residents/visitors of Fayette Co who have no other immediate choice. I so wish he had turned L rather than R on Hwy 71 that Saturday morning & arrived @ Seton Smithville whereby he would have been treated per STROKE PROTOCAL & airlifted out immediately......... read more

Even though we have paid up front for services, like X-rays and bloodwork, we always get a bill months later and, one or two days after that, we get a letter from a third party billing agency. This is why, if it's not an emergency, we drive to Austin or Katy for all our urgent medical needs. And we never have a problem like we have ALWAYS had at St. Marks. The latest problem...my husband had a chest X-ray on April 27th and we got a bill for $26 this Saturday and a third-party billing letter today! It was just a year ago that he had tests and I kept wandering why we hadn't got a bill (since the costs are always more than they initially require us to pay) so I called St. Marks and sure enough the billing department tried to tell me they just mailed me a bill a few days earlier for $100. Nope! Never got a bill! We even had them check our address to see if they're mailing it to the wrong place, and it was correct in their system. And to add insult to injury, we were treated as if we were just trying to make excuses for not paying a bill we NEVER got! Im scheduled for bloodwork, but will be heading to Quest Labs in Katy where my insurance always covers 100% at Quest instead of the $300 it costs me here. I'm so frustrated because I want to support our local medical center. They're just making it very, very difficult. The ER is awful. If you can get to another hospital or ER clinic, stay away! read more

Routine surgery went horribly wrong because of physicians at St.Marks. There mistakes caused me to be in the hospital for 30 days! I would not recommend an injured FLY to that place. I was transferred to Austin because the staff and the facility do not have the equipment to take care of serious medical injuries that they cause! read more

As a minister's wife, I visit many hospitals. This one is staffed by people who always seems to go above and beyond their duties to comfort and care for not only the patient, but the many family members who are suffering at the bedside of a gravely ill loved one, or those anxiously awaiting news or results from procedures or tests, etc. I appreciate the kind, gentle attitudes of these professionals who are always willing to take time to call a clergy member night or day when a family expresses that need of more support. This is definitely a place I would personally choose to be cared for. read more

Avoid this hospital if possible. Go to St Davids in Austin if you can. St Davids is amazing. St Marks was unable to do procedure needed so I was transferred to St Davids. Thank god for that. The procedure they attempted and could not do but I was still charged in full for it. St Davids did the procedure that was attempted and charged way less for it. The Dr forced me to take a ambulance ride to St Davids even thought I could walk, communicate and I had someone willing to drive me. They made me wait in the ER for a hour and half waiting for the ambulance and charged me for the time that I sat there. The ambulance was $2300. I wonder if they get a cut of the ambulance bill? The billing department will not answer the phone. The one time I did get through I was treated very rudely. I was told what to do about getting the procedure taken off the bill. I also had questions about paying the bill off. I asked why the cost of the procedure was so much higher then St Davids charged and the lady said that they were a smaller hospital. So I guess because they are smaller they get to increase their charges. The lady was rude to me the whole time. I have requested my medical records twice and have received nothing. So far the procedure is still on the bill and I for the last month and a half have not been able to talk to anyone in the billing department. I have even let the phone ring for a half and hour. I have called other departments asking for help and they just transfer me to the billing department. I would just go there but I live 5 states away. What a terrible experience.
