This was my first Montreal bagel. It was pretty different from the NY version. The crusty texture was more reminiscent of a bialy. And it was sweeter and somewhat denser too. Size wise, it was a bit smaller. Maybe if I had grown up eating these, I would appreciate them more but overall I'll stick to the NY version. read more

I love this little bagel shop in the underground Carrefours complex downtown. (Note: there are multiple ways to access this bagel shop, but for my mother and me, we got here directly by going into Simon's and then taking the store escalator down a level, and this bagel shop is directly to the left of the escalator on the ground floor). This small "bagelerie" (lol my term) has a ton of different bagels to choose from, and a ton of different "shmears". All are fresh and made with top-notch ingredients. I'm loyal to St. Viateur bagels, but these are pretty decent, made in the famous "Montreal way" (i.e., they are not puffy with air. Rather, they are smaller, a bit sweeter, with a chewier exterior and softer interior). I saw that they also have some fabulous looking bagel sandwiches here (including my favorite, the traditional bagel with cream cheese and lox with tomato and onion rounds). They also had some wonderful looking salads, too. If I worked downtown, this would definitely be one of my go-to lunch spots. My mother and I shared a raison bagel with regular cream cheese and man, it was delicious. Mom had a black Americano coffee and it came "nuclear hot", just the way she likes it. I had a latte and it was delicious. I should add that they had some other delectable looking pastries, cookies and bars on display, and the girls behind the counter could not have been any nicer. read more

La Fabrique de Bagel is in an underground shopping center on Rue Ste Catherine O. It is a short walk from many hotels on René Lévesque Boulevard. When you see the Starbucks and movie theatre, go inside the building next to it and take the escalator down. This shop has excellent Montreal-style bagels to go. I got the sesame bagel with plain cream cheese. The bagels are thin, warm, and crunchy, slathered with a good amount of cream cheese. I like the crispier texture of the Montreal-style bagel, but it probably hardens quicker than the softer and thicker American bagel, so eat it soon after it is toasted. read more

They are famous for Cream Cheese bagel. I have asked the staffs and they said honey nuts and fudges flavor are two most popular ones. I have tried two bagel with these two cream cheese and it really taste good. Honey nuts are sweeter than fudges one, and has nuts chips inside, which is my favorites. Also I have order another same one with Salmon, that also tasted good. You will be charged on the regular cream cheese bagel and pay extra for the smoke salmon. Beef and Cheese Bagel and Turkey Cheese and Egg Bagel are the well-done bagel, which taste just ok. I will recommend people to try cream cheese bagels instead of the well-done one. read more

Needed a quick lunch in Montréal recently. Thought I'd give one of Montreals famous bagels a shot. Picked this spot because it was close to my hotel. Ordered the salmon classic. (Sesame bagel, cream cheese, smoked salmon, capers, red onion). Also got some tomato basil soup. Bagel was good. Not great. Maybe I'm just too used to NYC bagels? Big. Chewy. Airy on the inside. Crispy on the outside. Sorta just felt a bit underwhelming. Nothing was bad about it....just didn't feel special. Soup was good. Hot. Tomato-y and comforting. I think I liked it more than the bagel sandwich. (Wasn't thrilled when I opened the soup and it was filled about 80%... but I got over it.) There was a caution in coming here. The natural path to bagel bliss in Montreal is generally St. Urbain. Yet the Yelp reviews drove me here. The joint had several employees in the front and back, so really no ambiance since seating didn't exist. I ordered 12 bagels. A smoothie for my daughter, and a multigrain bagel with some jalapeño cream cheese and smoked salmon. The taste was terrific. Half a bagel of in. Where is my phone? I ventured down to the location. I attempted to flag down the attendant at the counter. No response. My original help at front of house was also tied up. I turned and left. The employee who didn't originally help me, opened the side door, curtly told me that she was busy. Was nothing short of unpleasant. It was a horrible way of creating an impression that was supposed to be supportive of her company. Thankfully I had another device to find my phone. Ironically, the first individual I spoke to was terrific and helpful. Complete 180 from the other. The bagel/cream cheese/ salmon was out of this world. Coming from NYC where bagel are top notch I didn't have any expectations besides my friend saying he buys 2 dozen every time he visits Montreal. Needless to say I was delighted the bagels tasted like a light version of our NYC bagels. The bagel is thinner but still fluffy so when it's toasted you still get crispy outside and soft fluffy inside. It's definitely a "skinny" version of ours when it's lighter and not a doughy as ours and even the cream cheese is lighter and there's isn't a pound of it smeared on - they apply just the right amount! I had one everything bagel with scallion cream cheese (I know it's called something different here) and I went back for second but this time tried their poppy seed. Both thoroughly satisfying. I think if nyc bagels were like this we'd be skinnier lol. Definitely a pleasure coming here since the staff were so nice and the food was great. A nice find about a mile from the busy area of QC but an easy walk. In a lovely neighborhood. Indoor and outdoor seating available but it gets crowded. Food is made fresh and worth the wait. It's an easy and close walk in Downtown Montreal: Close to Renaissance Hotel. I bought the Chocolate Chip and Sesame Bagels. The bagels were a bit dry and the chocolate chip was not very chocolatey. I liked the sesame more than the chocolate chip. The employees are nice and patient: Big plus. They seem to memorize the regulars' orders and get them off and rolling with a quickness. It's downstairs in the building, so you can't see it from the street. People rave about the 2 Montreal famous bagel shops. (Real talk: It's better than Fairmount, I'll get to that review later).
