I have been coming to Avalon (Xenon prior) for over 2 decades now and I am always pleased with the…read morecaliber of students they have. Yes, there are an array of personalities ranging from more introverted to more extroverted. I have recognized that when I note that I'm donating hair, they will pair me up with a more confident student. What I mean is that for the newer students or for those who are not quite confident in their skills, a trim gives them practice that can build their confidence. But when you are donating 12" and choose a choppy A-line as your inspiration, it's definitely NOT textbook, so I feel like this would overwhelm someone who is still learning the basics. Last night, I went in to donate 12" and Noelia was so amazing!! She listened to what I wanted and asked her instructor if what she was thinking was how it should be done. When Noelia became stumped, she asked her instructors for guidance and intently watched them and learned new techniques. I even heard one of the instructors say "Well, this is one of those times where we bend that hair rule." My hair looks amazing and when I asked Noelia how to style it like my inspo pic, she was patient and explained in detail how to attain the look. She not only is a bright student who can learn, retain, and execute what she learned, but she can also teach back, which is the best demonstration of how wonderful of a student she is. Shout out to the instructors too who are patient and also allow the students to not fear asking questions or for guidance. They are really cultivating wonderful hair artists. And.. if you're lucky enough that an instructor decides to have a creative streak adding finishing touches to your hair, you get to see a hair master with scissors. I am amazed at not only the talent, but the speed in how they accomplish it.

As both a professional barber and a concerned mother, I feel obligated to speak honestly about my…read moreexperience with Avalon Institute -- not only as a client, but also from the perspective of a former student(different school) who expected a quality education and professional environment. Unfortunately, my experience was extremely disappointing. The education students receive does not properly prepare them for the beauty and barbering industry. Many students are left teaching themselves instead of receiving hands-on instruction and guidance from licensed educators. While there are a few instructors who genuinely care ( felicia and toya), some teachers seem more interested in being students' friends than actually educating, correcting, and preparing them for real careers. Professionalism and structure are lacking in many areas. As someone already working in the barber industry, I can confidently say the training standards should be much higher. Students deserve instructors like felicia and toya who are engaged, experienced, and committed to helping them succeed -- not instructors who overlook important techniques, avoid accountability, or fail to provide consistent education. Another major issue is the lack of support and understanding for working professionals trying to better themselves through education. Being discriminated and looked over for employment opportunities because your child is a student at the institute was not okay. I know what I can bring to the education of beauty but got shut down because I have the same DNA as a student isn't ok Additionally, many students were not properly issued the materials and kits they paid for and needed in order to complete their training. Missing supplies, incomplete kits, and lack of proper equipment made it difficult for students to fully participate and practice the skills required in beauty education. When students are paying thousands of dollars for tuition, they should receive every tool and resource promised to them. Overall, Avalon Institute was not the supportive, professional learning environment I expected. Students deserve quality education, proper materials, professionalism, and instructors who genuinely care about their future careers. I hope this school takes these concerns seriously and makes improvements for future students

I've had neighbors who report mixed experiences,…read moremostly the complaints are service / attitude related with about half of them My experience was a miss. Service was to be high and low lights, mostly at the back of head . The student and teacher decided that they would only do highlights, which I caught part of the way into the service. (She kept my chair turned away from her rolling tray so I could not see the single bowl - should have been two colors). During the service, the student stated that she hated working with chemicals and hair, but needed to finish this section in order to graduate. Her focus was on skin; she intended to be an esthetician. My harshest criticism is directed at the male teacher. His demeanor was imperious and haughty. He was not available and non-responsive for checks as the chemical processed. At one point I had to get up to find both the student and teacher to ask for the chemical to be removed as I sensed it was over processing. I waited another ten minutes and decided to rinse this stuff out myself. They were taking a break as I walked by to the rinse room and the student followed me in to help. I was charged for the conditioners and other products they needed to put in my hair to repair the damage. I've put three family members though beauty colleges and been a color model at hair shows. I like to support the colleges and help student with the learning process. They were no able to take a cash payment, nor would they accept a check, which was not disclosed on their website. The check out student stated that personal checks signaled fraud. (I'm no thief or fraudster!) I did leave a $50 tip to the student with the check out student with the admonishment: "Please let her know to follow her heart in skincare and stay far away from hair services." A fish rots from the head IMO. This student had developed an attitude that was not customer centric, likely due to the influences of the teachers and management developing a toxic customer experience. She knew my hair was severely damaged but did not acknowledge or apologize. If she fails when she is on her own, it will be up to her to readjust the bad attitudes this school taught her. How could I hold her responsible for the bad acts of her teacher / influencers? The culture and experience at Aveda Institute is not a match for people who really know the service industry in my opinion.

One didn't even seem interested, was just getting through the hour. The web site is deceptive. For instance, #5 of the "12 benefits" says "A comfortable waiting room for parents" and has a photo of a large room with big windows and leather couches, giving the impression that the photo is the waiting room. It is not. In fact, the room pictured is not anywhere at their facility. I don't know where it is but it's not at Parker Music Academy. On the web site, the photo by #3 and #6 shows a lovely outdoor amphitheater with people playing instruments. This photo is also not anywhere at Parker Music Academy. Maybe they posed some students in another town? I'm not sure. But, their actual facility is an old house that has been converted. The "waiting room" is a VERY small foyer with an old, broken-down sofa. Looks like the front room in your weird 70 year old aunt's house. The facilities are totally misrepresented on the web site. Their waiting room is not large or comfortable by any means. If more than 3 or 4 parents are waiting, someone must stand. As far as the 5 acres of space, maybe they own 5 acres but all I've ever seen was the old house and a gravel driveway with mud holes. There is no space for playing music outdoors. As far as the "Observation windows" talked about in #5, I don't know what they're talking about. When I read that, I thought there would be windows from the waiting room into the lesson rooms so waiting parents could watch. No such thing. The lesson rooms are small rooms with regular house windows to outdoors. I suppose one could walk around the outside of the house in the weeds and look into the rooms like a peeping-Tom, but I've never seen anyone do that. The photos on the web site by #2 (indoor) and #7 and #12 (outdoor) are also not anywhere near their facility. They were taken somewhere else, somewhere much nicer than their facility. If they are going to post photos on a web site that brags about their facilities, the photos should actually show the facilities rather than some other, random location. The web site also says "Conveniently located" in Parker and "Central location." Well, not exactly. They're quite a ways out a gravel road, not anywhere near the center of town. To be fair, the location is not terrible. It doesn't take long to get there. But, it's not as if it's on Main St. or Parker Rd. or any other paved road in town. In summary, the lessons are OK. They do offer many days/times to fit just about any schedule. But, their web site does NOT give an accurate impression of their facilities, not even close.
