Literally sat around while most tables were dirty so much so that when i went in only 3 tables were clear of all dishes and actually looked semi-hygienic. The reason you pay up front is because the food is so crappy that it might as well be an instant refund. I went in with my uncle who not only was not able to finish half the egg but also came home and got food poisoning. The other reviews must have been people who got paid to leave them because i dont see how anyone in their right mind would enjoy this level of food. Food was fine, exactly what I was expecting and it hit the spot. However, their policy of asking for tips prior to service is inappropriate, regardless of the establishment. After telling the cashier the amount that I wished to tip, the cashier proceeded to more than double the amount. This tip increase happened to other members of our party as well. I had to go to the cashier and ask her to return the additional tip that she had added to my card. I enjoyed the food, but I will not be taken advantage of. read more

Very disappointing. I don't know where they got the name since my pancakes were flat and not "stacked". Small portions, mediocre taste, noisy room and average service. My table was sticky! This place was good...until we found a dead baby cockroach in our meal at the end after almost eating our full plates. It was disgusting! Super breakfast. Omelette light and fluffy and stuffed with filling of your choice. The pancakes were also delicious. There were many toppings available. This was my first time eating here! It was a great experience. You order your food at the front and receive your drinks. Then they bring your food out to you. Me and my girlfriend both ordered the Waffle and Bacon. The Waffle was huge and delicious. It came with 3 pieces of bacon which was more than enough with the huge waffle. The bacon was also cooked perfect, not to crispy, not to soft. They were very friendly and made us feel like a local. The only one downside is I don't believe they have free refills, we both finished our drink and we're not offered any more. Thankfully the food came out super quick so we didn't already finish our drinks. Overall a great place for breakfast foods!! Would eat here again:) read more

As other reviewers have said, Stack'em High is a perfectly fine restaurant. For our visit in particular, there was nothing particularly special about its products. Pancakes were all plain and then had toppings added to it, compared to other places I've been where the ingredients are cooked into the pancakes. Especially for chocolate chip or blueberry pancakes, this difference in preparation style makes a big disparity in quality! I have a feeling that Stack'em just adds ingredients to the top due to volume. When we were there at 7am, the entire parking lot was full and we had to park in a nearby parking lot. We waited inside in line for about 10 minutes, and after ordering we didn't receive our food for another 20-30 minutes. Note, we each ordered a couple pieces of bacon and three pancakes. There was nothing special about them, so I think the cooks just couldn't put out pancakes fast enough to serve the customers. That being said, the pancakes were pretty good and the atmosphere was loud, fun, and bright while still being clean. I wouldn't recommend going here on a Saturday or Sunday because it's likely you will get stuck in traffic afterwards, so try to reserve visits to off-peak times! read more

My husband and I went twice this week, I highly recommend it! The pancakes, French toast, waffles, country ham omelette, and grits were all delicious. It's fairly priced, large portions, the food comes out quickly. The staff was very polite and they are very generous with refills. I don't know why people would be complaining! Only been there once mid-summer and the food was okay. I had an omelette that was pretty big and nothing to write home about but was good overall diner-type breakfast. Two especially noteable things: It was VERY hot in there because so crowded and they had a line out the door so people kept the door open. I honestly don't even know if the AC was running. The poor waiters were all sweaty which was not their fault but also not appetizing. Also, it is cafeteria-style in terms of ordering and there is a lot on the menu so if you are the type that does not like to feel rushed and shout your order over a bunch of people, don't go there. After you order, they bring your food to your table but that's another scary thing - if it's busy, you have to stroll around through other tables trying to find one to accomodate your party which could be hard, especially if you have a big group. It's okay though, I would probably go again to see if I have a different experience, maybe during a slower time period. read more

I used to love eating here. You would wait in line but then get rewarded with food that came out fast and friendly service. Not so any more...except for the long line. The last few years we have noticed a steady decline culminating in our last visit. We ordered our drinks from a young man who looked and acted like he was asleep...We corrected him twice before we got what we ordered (only 4 drinks!). The young lady who took our order was equally blah. When I asked her if their were more knives she plainly stated "No". I asked if they would be getting more her answer was "Probably not". After checking twice, which means you have to basically butt in line and get in people's way, finally the woman who brought us our food (who was quite pleasant) found someone else who was able to scrounge up a couple. This was after waiting quite some time even for our food to come out. More blah. The restaurant was hot, crowded, and the food was really nothing special. There are not many places available in the Outer Banks for breakfast.We decided to try the Stack'em High Pancakes in Kill Devil Hills. We expected to be seated and were surprised that it was an ala carte. I like to try items that are indigenous to the area and went with the Clam Hash. If you like clams, this one is for you. Great food, weird set up. Cafeteria style ordering seems to create a bottleneck when you enter the restaurant.
