You are going to get greysheet bid asking prices (if you don't know what this is do a google search). They have a small but diverse selection of coins to choose from as well. I went to this place and they looking at me like I'm selling drugs, they pay pennies, they like people that bring coins that got there coins from inheritance and didn't pay anything for them, so they pay pennies, but there asking double prices for what there selling!! read more

Sorry for the long review, but I had to take some time to share my wonderful experience at Stacks selling and auctioning some coins. If you don't want to read it all, the highlight is that Stack's Bowers was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and paid me more for my dad's coin collection than I ever thought it could be worth. And now I am taking a vacation :) My dad was a member of The Greatest Generation and a WWII veteran. And like a lot of men his age he loved to collect coins, currency, guns, knives, etc. In fact as a child I would often accompany my dad to coin shows in Albany, Boston, Philadelphia, all over really. My dad kept meticulous records of what he spent on each coin as well as where and when he bought it. We definitely weren't rich and when going through his album I didn't see a purchase price over about $125 for any single coin. My dad passed away in 1995 and my sister and I were left with his big coin album. It was literally hundreds of gold and silver coins from the U.S. Most were from 1933 and older. Seeing the price tags of $15 here and $60 there, we didn't really think much about it. We knew he had several thousand dollars into the collection, but outside of going to shows when we were younger, it wasn't something he ever told us much about. And to be honest, we were overwhelmed by the task of valuing the coins and didn't want to deal with it, so we hid the album in the back of my closet and kind of forgot about it. I would occasionally hear stories about someone finding a coin worth millions of dollars and check the album to try to find something I could retire on, sadly, that never happened. Happily though, I did retire a couple years ago and I decided (with my sister's permission) it was time to sell the coins. The first thing I did was hit the internet to chase down some values. That was easier said than done. Based on what I saw, each coin could be worth $20 or $2,000 and that was of no help at all. The first shop I went to was on 44th and I think all they did was see the old price tags, double those numbers, and made that their offer. I knew the melt value was many times higher than their offer. I went to a couple other places in the city and Westchester and got some offers that seemed decent, but it was still just a number with no context of what was rare and what was common. My last stop was Stacks but I wish it had been my first. I knew my dad had bought some coins from Stacks in the 1950s (based on some receipts), but I honestly didn't know they were still around until a former co-worker who collects coins suggested I check them out. Apparently they were open the whole time right under my nose. Right when I walked in the door I could tell this was going to be a different experience. Someone actually sat down with me and looked at all 433 coins. I was probably there for three hours on my first visit. The coin expert there was excited to see the collection, clearly knew what he was looking at, and I never once felt like he was taking advantage of my lack of experience. I ended up going back with my sister a few weeks later and we sold the majority of the coins. For my own safety I won't say the price, but it was tens of thousands of dollars higher than what our second best offer was. And better yet, we consigned our 15 best coins to one of their upcoming coin auctions. So in a couple of months we will be getting another check for those coins. I can only assume there are thousands of other people like me who have inherited an old coin collection and don't know what to do with it. Take my advice, ask around a little bit, try to understand what you have, but before you do anything, definitely give Stacks a chance to share their opinion. read more

There are 1 or 2 cases with coins under $25 and many more very expensive, amazing coins/bills to look at. The staff are very professional and knowledgeable and are willing to take the time to explain things to those who might not have much experience, so don't be afraid to pop in with some coins you found in your attic even if you don't know anything about them. I sold all the coins to Stack's for a good price. Recently I discovered another cache of coins and returned to Stack's to sell a collection of proof sets, old pennies and random foreign coins. My 12 year old son collects coins and while on a vacation in NYC, as we were walking toward Central Park, my son looked up and saw the Stacks Bowers sign. He declared that Stacks Bowers has great coin auctions (I think he's seen their ads in his coin magazines) and insisted on going in. I felt uncomfortable because we were wearing biking clothing and had backpacks on and must have looked a bit grungy. However, we were treated very kindly and, even better, they were so impressed by my son's knowledge of coins that they gave him some free coins and catalogs, which thrilled my son to no end. They were very engaging with us, never made us feel rushed and just let us browse, even though it must have been pretty obvious that my son didn't have the money to buy their coins. This coin dealership calls itself "prestigious" but are anything but! They are scam artists, and like to steal & switch coins from unsuspecting victims and elderly widows. My grandmother had a collection of gold coins she kept from her father and decided to get them appraised by Stack's. They told her she should leave the coins with them and come back in a few days so they can "research" their value. When she went back they handed her a bunch of some rusty weird coins and said her coins were counterfeit. When she told them those were not her coins and she wanted her coins back, they kicked her out!!! Luckily we took pictures of her coins prior to going there. Now we are suing them in court. I guess this is how they built their empire, by lying, cheating and STEALING!!! SHAME ON YOU STACK'S!! read more

They used to be much much better. If you went in 5+ years ago, the staff was much more friendly and the whole vibe was much more like that of a classic coin store. The prices were good and the atmosphere was a mix of professional and casual. Now, however, all the more pleasant staff have either retired or moved on, and the entire good feeling of the place has gone down the drain. The prices to buy coins are still good, but do NOT sell coins there. I am a known repeat customer and am friendly with everyone, but they still give me horrible offers. If you bring in a coin with retail $3000-$3500, you'll get $1500-$2000 from them. If it's retail $200+, you'll get $75. Expect an offer of around 50% of the true retail value, unless its bullion. If it's bullion (made for pure gold/silver content) then you will get the exact value based on the gold and silver spot price. This makes sense because retail for bullion is only slightly more than spot price, regardless of what any price guides say. Also, the friendly atmosphere has gone away. The staff are now too crisp, too professional. This is understandable, as I guess they are now trying to focus more on experienced collectors, but they are making it unpleasant for other more casual people, who they still need to maintain a good reputation. In conclusion, this is still a GREAT place to buy coins, as the prices and selection are unbeatable. Also, transactions are easy and take minutes. Very disappointed after reading the reviews. My Grandfather left me a large collection of coins and I went to Stacks not knowing much about coin history and hoping to get an appraisal as well as learn a little bit about the collection. Instead I was greeted by an Indian fellow who clearly feels very important working in such an establishment. I was treated with disdain and a very uncomfortable bias. He offered the couple before me a seat and very friendly service. When it was my turn he pushed a tray in my direction, looked at my collection and said "we are only interested in two coins, the rest are nothing" Had I known I was going to a PAWN SHOP, I would have not even bothered. An appraisal is about finding value and being educated on said value of the item. He needs to check his attitude at the door. I ended up going to another business for a proper appraisal and sale. I have never been treated so disrespectfully as a seller or consumer and I will visit every review site possible to voice my discontent. read more
