Let me start off by saying I have no one but myself to blame. Anybody who buys a used car without first taking it to an independent mechanic for inspection is either independently wealthy or not very bright. I was in the market for a Honda Element. Honda introduced the Element in 2001 and discontinued it in 2011. The vehicle has developed a cult following since it's demise which means owners are asking way too much for them. Stafford Motors had a 2003 Element EX AWD that they were asking $5400 for. What attracted me to the vehicle wasn't just the low price, in fact the price made me a little leery. What attracted me was a clean Carfax report and a recent Virginia Inspection. The day of the test drive was not ideal. Traffic was horrible. The 95-mile drive took me three hours, jeopardizing my scheduled appointment to look at another Element in Leesburg. I arrived just before noon armed with a code reader and a flashlight. Unfortunately, I could not find the ODB port on this vehicle. The manual shows it just above the fuse box (above the gas pedal) but there was no port to be found. I'm no mechanic but I've owned enough hoopties' to look for the obvious problems: Oil/coolant leaks, rust, flood damage, etc. The car looked clean. I took it out for what I considered a vigorous test drive on the back road behind the dealership. I wasn't impressed with the acceleration but we're talking about a 3300-pound vehicle being pulled by a 2.4-liter 4 cylinder. I stomped on the breaks a couple of times. The pedal didn't feel as firm as I like but break jobs are within my wheelhouse, especially disk brakes. The paint on the upper dash was peeling a bit but I wasn't buying the car for its aesthetic beauty. I was more concerned with the mechanics. What I didn't do was take it out on the freeway. 95 south was a parking lot so I figured what's the point (fatal mistake number 1). I decided since the Carfax was clean and the vehicle was recently inspected, I would forego the mechanic's inspection (fatal mistake number 2) and buy the vehicle. I had driven my other car to the dealership so I arranged to pick up the Element the following Tuesday. Rebecca, the saleswoman, asked that I call her prior to coming out so that they could detail the car prior to pick up. Monday evening, I called her to let her know I would be arriving Tuesday just before noon. I showed up, as promised. They were still detailing the car and putting on temporary plates. Meanwhile, I filled out the final paperwork. They handed over the keys and I was on my way home. I jumped on 95 north and accelerated to highway speed. The vehicle seemed to have more pickup than it did during the test drive (great) but at about 70 miles per hour, I noticed it pulling to the right. At first, I chalked it up to wind (The shape of the Element isn't exactly aerodynamic) but when I let go of the wheel the vehicle practically changed lanes. "This thing is going to need an alignment," I thought. Turns out it was going to need much more than that. During the Maryland State inspection, the mechanic flagged three items. The windshield wipers (no big deal), the rack and pinion assembly (Wait, what?) and a leaky power steering pump. The repairs would cost 1600 dollars. I asked them to hold off and called Rebecca. "Call the warranty company and see if it's covered," she suggested. I already knew the answer before I called but the "limited" warranty only covered engine and drive train. I was screwed. The sale was "as is." An independent mechanic would have flagged the problem immediately but old dummkopf decided to skip the inspection. It wasn't even a matter of money. I would have gladly paid for the inspection. I just didn't want to waste another day driving back and forth from Stafford. The trip took me 6 and a half hours. I didn't want to dedicate another day to Stafford Virginia. I called Pep Boys and told them to go ahead with the repairs. This would be another expensive lesson dished out by a Virginia Used Car lot. Pep Boys didn't have the part in stock so it would be a couple of days until the work could be completed. I went over the sequence of events that led to my stupid decision. Then it hit me. If this vehicle doesn't meet Maryland State requirements, how the hell did it pass a Virginia Inspection? I knew why the CarFax report didn't mention anything. The problem probably was never reported. I went online to see what my options were. I called Stafford Motors and requested the name of the garage that performed the inspection. I know there are garages out there that will pass unsafe vehicles for a little scratch on the side. If this is one of them, I intend to report them to the Virginia State Attorney's office. I know it probably won't get me my money back but hopefully, it will put the inspectors and Stafford Motors on blast. Virginia used car dealers: Avoid at all costs. read more

I was looking up Saab's online and came across Stafford Motors. Leo treated my family and I with hospitality. I came to buy a Saab and my sister ended up getting a car for herself as well. He is very knowledgeable and friendly, he wants to best for his customers. If you need a car, come to Leo and he will make the experience of buy a car too easy. Edit: Barely two weeks after buying the car, it has a problem. I pull up to a red light and it shuts off, literally had to push it off the road. Of course there is a risk buying used but this is ridiculous. I called Leo trying to find solutions and all I got was blame for not buying a warranty and a talk about a mystery partner who says there is absolutely nothing that can be done. read more

I purchase a vehicle from Stafford Motors 2 1/2 weeks ago, waste notice damage on the driver and passenger seat of vehicle and brought it to the sales rep attention. By the time I got there couple days later to pick up the vehicle, I spoke with AK and he said that they will take care of the issue. By the time I drove the vehicle home I have noticed issues with the vehicle, the rear end of the vehicle made a roaring noise and on the front passenger wheel made a clicking noise. Also the vehicle had a slight hesitation when the vehicle was at 30 mph, I called the next day and told them about the issues of the vehicle and they had me bring it back to resolve my issues. They had the vehicle for a week, when I drove the vehicle home they resolve the rear end issue but less the other issues intact. I called AK and ask why they did not fix the other issues and he told me they were not going to spend more money on the vehicle for the repairs. Vehicle failed merlin inspection due to the issues that I've inquired about on the vehicle and have to shell out hundreds of dollars for repairs as well as me paying the first note on the vehicle in the next several days. Went to check out a Jeep Wrangler they had on the lot. First off it needed a jump just to get it to drive. Second I was told it was a 'mountaining' vehicle and to not be surprised that it wouldn't go as fast. The reason it wouldn't go as fast was because it was stuck in 4WD. They aren't trustworthy in my opinion. Jeep was on sale for 11995 but it's not even worth half that. read more

I am a person that never writes reviews but in this case, if I can help just one person save thousands of dollars, I will. I recently purchased a vehicle from Stafford Motors in November 2020. The vehicle looked good on the outside and underneath the hood. I took it for a test drive and it ran great. I proceeded with the purchase and completed all the paperwork. I live in MD, so I needed to have the vehicle inspected in MD. When I took my vehicle to the MD inspection it was raining so the were not able to inspect my truck. After 3 days and the weekend, I was finally able to have the vehicle inspected. To my surprise, the inspection station called me within 30 mins and said, hey we can't inspect this vehicle, underneath is all rusted out, framed is cracked and the vehicle should have never been sold. When the inspector allowed me to review underneath the vehicle, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Everything was completely rusted. I called Kenny, the manager, and informed him I needed return the vehicle as it is a complete lemon. Kenny stated they wont accept the return because it was past the "3 day" return policy. This policy was never mentioned to me during the sale. Bottom line here, they sale junk vehicles and I would definitely request in writing that you would like to have the vehicle inspected before you purchase it. It cost me $6800.00 dollars and if I can help save your money, please take this review serious. Also, the titles cost an additional $175 dollars because they do not put the title in your name. So I am not sure what the $399 fee is for. Stay clear and due your due diligence. I think the pick the best looking clean cars on the outside but underneath they are complete lemons. read more

I purchased a car from Stafford Motors and within 3 weeks it blew a head gasket. There were a couple other minor things that the dealer, Leo S. said he would help me with the repair bill, that was before the head gasket blew. I contacted him for weeks after the car broke down with out any response. Finally after a month he responded to my email saying he was out of the country and that he just got back and was sorry the hear about the car, which I had sent him pictures of when it broke down on the side of the road. He stated that he would be willing to pay half of the repair. I sent him an estimate from the repair shop where I had taken it and again he did not respond for a couple of weeks. I called him and he answered and said that he had to talk it over with his partners and he would let me know by the next Wednesday. It was at least another week and I had to call him. He then informed me that they said they were not willing to pay any thing for the repair and I was responsible for it all. Even after he said he would pay half. I didn't want to write this review because Leo had me convinced that he was not like most used dealerships and wanted to do right by me. Well you see I'm writing this review. The repair shop where I have my car told me that they have another customer who purchased a car from Stafford Motors and his car broke down the same week with a blown transmission. This dealership does not care about the customers like they want you to believe. They are the typical used dealership that just wants to sell cars no matter what. I do not normally write any kind of reviews but I dont want what happened to me to happen to anyone else. I bought a truck from here 2 days before Christmas with 53,000 miles. When I test drove the truck there were no warning lights or anything of concern. I bought the truck and drove home. I have not driven the truck even 3 hours and the ABS break light came on the dash and brakes stopped working, they repaired that and made pay 150 dollars for the labor. I drove the truck home again and then the truck broke down and had to be towed to a mechanic still with not even 3 hours driving time. The engine needs a new throttle body an expensive repair and the brakes not working is pretty unsafe. I have tried to be reasonable with them but they refuse fix this or even try. Again I have not driven this vehicle even thee hours and they know this because I have not put hardly any miles on it since I bought. All I can say is BUYER BEWARE!!!!! read more
