Place looks like a junkyard outside. It appears the cat on the cat patio can't go back inside on their own. I saw 2 volunteers but it took about 5-10 minutes to stumble on them by chance as I walked around and peered inside the cat areas on the inside. The road to get up to the spca is EXTREMELY unsafe and unstable. This place would be a nightmare to pull in and out of with bad weather. read more

very disgusting place especially, the owner bill is very prejudice towards his volunteers the cats are probably on the verge of dying they all look sad and the rooms are unsanitary, the only bathroom in the whole facility looks very disgusting and has bugs and cracks all over the wall, I would never recommend this place to anyone because of how bad it is. read more

I walked in looking to volunteer, I was immediately greated and given a tour and handed a box of treats to hangout with the animals. These animals are loved and cared for, so many negative reviews about the adoption process. I support a thorough look into people before giving them a whole other life to take care of. This shelter is clean, cared for and the volunteers and workers excel at what they do! If you don't get approved by the shelter it's no worries! Former Staff Member) first off don't ever think about coming here to volunteer, adopt or donate anything to this shelter The Person who runs this name is Bill or William Hoyt which he is a very rude and disrespectful Individual to not only me but other Volunteers aswell ( I will provide proof aswell of some of the nasty and disgusting things he has said about a young girl with disabilities) One time a Volunteer was bitten by 2 dogs back to back same day he didn't even ask or care to know if that person was okay or doing better he just wanted the dogs to be kept away from that volunteer but what he has said in the image was very rude and uncalled for . The Young girl with a disability accidentally spilled water on the floor and he went on a rant about how he doesn't like her and as you can see in the screenshot of some of the nasty things he has said about her aswell .... As a staff member this place is truly a dump tools everywhere dogs pee and poop all in their rooms there is holes in the bathrooms ( that don't get cleaned ) the Cats never get out they stay in the rooms all day the litter boxes do not get cleaned properly also the roof is collapsing when it rains or snows the piles of water / snow sits on the roof and Mr Hoyt doesn't have any plans on fixing it and the dogs do not get any types of baths or cleaned at all I've been working here since August of 2024 and I've never been instructed to clean or wash any of the dogs at all even when I took them out and brought them in form it being wet and muddy outside no baths or nothing just brought back in the rooms and thats it I wouldn't recommend anyone to volunteer or work here or donate anything to this place because of Mr William (Bill ) Hoyt read more

I called to get some general information, regarding me acquiring a dog to become a service dog for myself. The gentleman that just called me was very condescending and and rude. He asked why did I need the dog and when I informed him at I am not disclosing to him (HIPAA) why I needed a dog, he called me stupid. Extremely unprofessional for someone that should be in a position to be a tad more patient with someone who's in need of a service dog. I will continue my search elsewhere. read more

-10/10 wouldn't recommend. As a volunteer there, I experienced multiple encounters where I was mistreated not to mention how the animals are treated. I was disrespected on multiple encounters and was talked to rudely whenever something was done incorrectly in his eyes, which is understandable for the frustration yes but disrespect was unacceptable especially when I'm trying to understand and adapt to a new environment. I don't remember if the dogs were ever given a bath, because since I've been a volunteer there, I've never seen or been directed to wash them The cats rarely get to come out of their rooms and don't get space and most of their rooms are filled with urine and feces The roof is collapsing. The place is a dump. There's water piles on the roof and in the bathroom there is a hole like a mice or something can sneak in there just don't go here point blank period. Don't do it... I'm new to the adoption pet stage as I've always purchased my pets who are breeders... I've decided to cease this process due to so many deserving pets are in shelters. I contacted Stafford SPCA, due to being interested in a cat I would like to adopt which was spayed...*remember I said the pet I wanted to adopt was already spayed* The adoption application was rather long, nothing new there.. However, I was denied due to my previous pet of 8yrs wasn't neutered...he passed due to nerve degeneration...and he had a horrible skin disorder.. I'm a staunchest supporter of neutering or spayed my pets.. However I was caught off guard with the assessors assumptions I was not a supporter of neutering.. Solely due to the fact I mentioned my pet wasn't neutered... This experience really put me in a different head space as I'm sure everything else would have turned out fine...I am a responsible pet owner always have been, my vet would have vouched for this.. though the accesser was polite.. and her stressing the need to place pets in responsible homes.. her assumptions was premature and rather unprofessional. read more

After being open about moving to another state because of job relocation (in a month or two) during the application process, we went through a very slow and lengthy process. At several points made to feel very uncomfortable. We were then denied the adoption because the move would be too stressful to the puppy. Something they KNEW from the get-go. What a waste of time! It's because of idiots like Stafford SPCA that backyard breeders flourish. read more

In my experience with no kill shelters in the past I have always found those organizations to be helpful in placing homeless cats but leave it to Stafford county to be different. Stafford has a huge problem with abandoned cats and one showed up on our front step injured. After walking around the neighborhood I learned the original owners had moved. This cat had no front claws and was left outdoors to fend for itself. I managed to get the cat to the vet and had it treated for an ear injury and had rabies updated, antibiotic injection, pain injection and feline leukemia test done. I called around to see if no kill shelter could take her and discovered that the cats there are allowed to walk around in a room with no cages so they wouldn't take this stray because she has no claws and "can't defend herself if attacked by another shelter cat" even though I was told during a previous discussion with the same lady that they would take her and that she might get adopted despite the odds because she was declawed and had rabies and had been neutered/spayed already. I have never known a no kill shelter to allow cats to commune in one room without cages or to turn away an animal in need if they have room. In my experience no kill shelters use cages and then rotate the animals to go home with volunteers so they stay socialized between adoptions. I couldn't believe my ears and when I asked for any other suggestions for where I could take the cat the woman at the shelter told me my best bet was to find the cat a home...really...I never would have thought of that... She also informed me that many of the cats at the shelter have been there for 5 years and that the stray I have been helping probably wouldn't get adopted despite her being an indoor cat previously. Needless to say I will continue to do what I can for this cat to keep her safe. I have a cat of my own who I hope will accept this stray but it is quite a stressful process. Still as a lover of cats all I can say is that Stafford needs to invest in some other no kill shelters and look at other places for examples of how to run it successfully so that cats who need help can actually be helped. Very disappointing. I have lived all over the U.S. and have never seen such poor services for cats that need help. Luckily for this cat I am a compassionate person but think about all those out there who won't invest the time or money needed to help or who want to do the right thing but give up and just let the stray roam because the no kill shelter won't take the poor homeless but apparently domesticated cat in? I was thinking about volunteering there with my teen daughter but not anymore. It is one thing to be careful but another to be turned away because someone at some point might have loved the cat and lost it during the move and had it declawed previously. I have adopted several cats in my life from shelters and they were gems everytime. But I feel sorry for cats in Stafford because the system is broken. The county needs to run a campaign for neutering and spaying and reinforce the importance of being responsible for animals. read more

Here was my experience with this shelter when attempting to surrender our cat: The staff are horribly rude. This woman outright assumed I was lazy and didn't care about my him anymore. My wife and I were appalled at the email I received from her. If you really care about your business and the animals you take care of, don't be rude and discourteous to your customers. I most definitely will never surrender or adopt anything from their shelter. I wouldn't even let my pet ant be taken care of by this woman. read more

Wonderful experience with Stafford SPCA! The facility is one of the finest I've seen. When you read their website if very clearly states the guidelines in place and while lengthy you quickly realize it is because they truly care and want the best for their animals. Tracy was very kind and genuine and helped us along the adoption process. Many of the SPCA's I have visited could take a tip or two from them! These cats and dogs have it made! I agree! William Hoyt is a jerk. Yesterday I caught him trying to lure my dog off of her own yard with treats to pick her up and get her taken by animal control. When I approached him and said WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?! THATS MY DOG... He was really rude and asked where I lived, my dog was standing right in front of my house. If I hadnt been so close to my house or hadnt been home to see he basically wouldve stolen my little girl and I wouldve had to pay to get her back without ever knowing where she was taken from. Then he handed me his stupid green business card like he was some big shot and he had every right to be doing there trying to trick my dog off of the property. I have lost all respect for the SPCA and their proximity to my house now has me in fear of leaving my dogs out in their own yard enjoying their freedom because of their hidden fence. The Stafford SPCA is not to be trusted. So if you get a business card on your door saying they found your dog and notified animal control, dont be so sure its the truth. read more

I ran across the negative reviews of the Stafford SPCA and I have to say I was so surprised. This is a caring and responsible shelter that always does what is best for the animals. The negative posts were from people who were not able to adopt... having nothing to do with the care that the animals receive, or the dedication of those that work and volunteer at the shelter, or the fact that this shelter provides a home for animals that need one. I volunteer at the shelter and all the animals are well cared for and loved. They are very careful to place animals only in well researched and vetted homes. I went through the adoption process to adopt my dog... and I appreciated the fact that it was thorough. It wasn't about me and my feelings, it was about finding the best home for a animal that had a rough start. Please read these negative reviews and then think... is this person complaining about the health and care of the animals, or are they complaining because they didn't measure up to the standards of the shelter? read more
