We filled out an application, met the pup and foster mom, and then patiently waited for her to be old enough to come home with us. We spent almost 12 love-filled years spoiling that dog. She was our firstborn, a big sister to our 9-year-old human, my co-worker, our snuggle bug, a dedicated protector of this home, and one of the quirkiest, most intelligent, and most loving souls to grace this earth. Baby Dandelion Christian passed on Monday, Dec. 2nd, after a gallant fight with a rare colon cancer. We continue to appreciate organizations like this and will continue to support their efforts to give all dogs a chance at life.

I have always adopted from rescues when looking for a dog to join our family. I have used Lucky…read moreDog Animal Rescue 2 times in the past with great results. But it was not the same experience with K-9 Lifesavers. A standard application question is what would make you return the dog? My answer has always been the same- if it were vicious. And I would define vicious as "biting someone when unprovoked and without any warning (ie. a growl, a bark)". 48 hours after adopting a dog from them she went after our cleaning lady despite my husband and our other dog being right there. I called the foster right away to discuss this incident and did not receive a call back. The next day, the dog bite my stepmother breaking the skin in multiple places. Again, unprovoked and without any warning. So I returned the dog which broke my heart. When my husband returned her- the foster shared that she had gone after a delivery person in her home, information that was not shared with us before or during the adoption process. Had we known, we would not have adopted her, as I believe all things are trainable but we don't have the skills to train vicious. Was told that the AC would call me the next day about a refund- a week later I had to call her. And she got the foster on the phone and together they defended their decision to adopt out this dog by reminding me that they told me about the dog's issues -she would need to be introduced to new people slowly. Which is different than - she tries to bite all new people and sometimes she succeeds. Instead of considering this dog a candidate for intensive training for biting, something that would make her a safer dog to adopt- they have simply chosen to place her back up for adoption right away. Buyer Beware!

We adopted a very sweet dog from the Fredericksburg Animal Shelter. She was described as a…read more7-year-old mixed breed who enjoyed playing but was also happy to sit quietly indoors with us. We are an elderly couple and reside in an over 55 community, so we did not want a dog that was too energetic. She is a sweet dog, and we love her and are trying our best to work with her. That is the good part. Hint: We found a vet who agreed to work with us/her. The vet prescribed Prozac for anxiety. NOW! This SPCA seems to be a sloppy organization. 1. When we got there, a staff member pointed to a door and said that we could go there and see the animals. We didn't need a lot of directions, but we had to find the dogs on our own by following our own noses. 2. We had to wait a long time to meet the dog. 3. The answer to every question about the dog was, "I don't know." 4. The paperwork we received about the dog described her as 2 years old and gray. Her age on the cage was 7 and she IS brown. When the inaccuracy of the paperwork was brought to their attention, the answer was "that's ok". 5. We were ignorant and just accepted the mixed breed description. Mixed breed, perhaps but many people have stated that she looks like a pit. This has caused us a lot of grief in our over 55 community. 6. We were told her bad points are she doesn't like her butt touched & is afraid of syringes. Truth: Although she is a sweetheart to us and other people, she will not tolerate any vet. 7. She was so dirty when we got her that before going home, we had to take her immediately to PetSmart for a bath. 8. PetSmart could not bathe her with the neck collar from the shelter on and it was so tight that they were unable to get it off. The collar was so tight that my husband had to cut it off. Poor dog. How could any shelter allow a collar to be that tight?! This shelter should be investigated regarding truth in advertising and animal care.

Then they are closed Monday's so we called on Tuesday and the cat we adopted is gone!!! I'm so heartbroken that the cat is gone and they won't do anything to resolve the situation. Someone "adopted" the cat after us and they refused to call and have them return the cat. They offered to take the cat we picked up back but let's take in account they wasted our time going to a vet and now we have to go to a vet again and shelter again to get another cat. I had to change my review after this because me and my husband are so upset at the carelessness of the paperwork. We really had our hearts set on that cat. They also said they will pay the vet bill to get a new cat neutered but how is that compensation when we just paid to neuter one of there cats!? We also had to drive back and forth to centerville to pick this cat up. I'm sure some future person will get told to pay to neuter that cat and then they will pocket the money since that's how corrupt this place is.

The shelter is running a special throughout the month of June (2016) where all cats are $20 (this includes micro chipping, neutering/spaying, and shots). The facility is clean, the caretakers are nice, and the process is easy. Visit during the week if you dislike crowds, because on weekends they get packed. Pro-tip: they take cash or check only. No credit cards. Be prepared because you'll probably find at least one animal here that'll capture your heart!!
