I don't often drive across the Valley for a tobacco shop, but after battling the Loop 101 and finally pulling into Stag Tobacconist in Scottsdale, I immediately understood why people make the trip. The storefront practically says, "Congratulations, you've found the place." And it is - THE PLACE. Whether you're into cigars, pipes, or pipe tobacco, Stag appears to have just about everything you could need. The selection is impressive, but what really sets this place apart is the knowledge behind the counter. I immediately met Rick, the curator and a true tobacconist. He was a little intimidating at first, but within a few minutes I realized I was talking to someone with a lifetime of experience and absolutely no interest in selling me something I didn't need. This week marked 50 years of pipe smoking for him. I explained that I was a longtime cigar smoker just beginning my pipe journey. As I started comparing my cigar preferences to pipe tobacco, he stopped me and said something along the lines of, "Pipes and cigars are apples and oranges." That turned out to be the most valuable lesson of the day. I handed him my shopping list: * Bristle pipe cleaners * A quality pipe pouch * Pipe tobacco He immediately started making recommendations. He put Capstan Blue, Three Nuns ("Three Penguins," according to Rick), and Peterson Nightcap in my hands. They were out of Peterson Deluxe Navy Rolls, and when I asked about their house Burley, he told me it wasn't worth my time. I appreciated the honesty. Then came the conversation that made the trip worthwhile. As I was preparing to check out, Rick asked how many pipes I owned. When I told him, he launched into a discussion about what he calls "ghost smokers"--new pipe enthusiasts who constantly chase the next blend, never spend enough time with one tobacco to really understand it, and never allow a pipe or blend to develop its own character. He explained that tobacco needs time to tell its story, and that dedicating certain pipes to certain blends allows both the pipe and the smoker to develop a deeper appreciation for them. It wasn't a sales pitch. In fact, he talked me out of buying several things I originally planned to purchase. I ultimately left with two tins of Three Nuns, a tin of Cornell & Diehl Burley Flake #5 (which Rick insisted I needed to try), a quality pipe pouch, cleaning supplies, and a beautifully restored estate pipe for $50ish that seemed far too nice for the price. More importantly, I left with a better understanding of pipe smoking than I had when I walked in. That's the difference between a store and a tobacconist. If you're looking for someone to ring up a sale, there are plenty of places that can do that. If you're looking for experience, wisdom, honest recommendations, and people who genuinely care about the hobby, Stag Tobacconist is absolutely worth the drive. I'll be back. read more

The service here was incredible. The guy there was very knowledgeable and was able to fill in the blanks I had for pipe tobacco, as I haven't done it in so long and even clued me in on some of the things I wasn't aware of. He set me up right, and he even told me about some of the cheaper ways to achieve at I was going for because at the time I had a budget. The value was great. Just like I remembered for the pipe tobacco. The pipes they have are very nice. What I genuinely appreciated about this place is that I told the guys working there what my budget was and about how many cigars I wanted to gift and one of them went through the humidifier with me and picked out four cigars. He was super nice and very helpful. My uncle was delighted with his gift and I was thrilled to have been able to give something nice that was enjoyed. I've been coming to this place for years. I used to consider it one of the better tobacco establishments around, with an high-end and posh appearance, unlike other establishments that look like they operate on the fringe. I would often buy my cigars here as the prices are reasonable and the selection good. However, when I went to buy a pipe I felt like I was shopping for a used car. What's worse, the estate pipe I did end up buying had suffered the beginnings of burn-through in the bowl, which had been thoroughly scraped out hiding the weakened side of the bowl. The guy who sold it to me was really arrogant and made the entire buying experience an unpleasant one, especially since he appeared to view customers (at least those he didn't know) with some suspicion (e.g., hovering over them, asking if they put a tin of tobacco back, etc.). At least that's how he made me feel. I don't live nearby so it's been an effort to get to this place but doubt I'll be making the effort again anytime soon. read more

Rick has one of the finest shops in AZ. His prices are excellent on single sticks and boxes. His staff if friendly and helpful. I've been a frequent customer, more frequent than I probably should, for several years. The shop has several cigar events a year with top brand reps, and the newest cigars on the scene. There is even a special cigar club inside that anyone can become a member of for a modest fee. Make sure you check it out and tell friends! I went into stag today about 1 o'clock for a gift. The black gentleman (did not get his name as he refused) behind the counter threw me out because I did not have a mask. No sign on door btw. I explained I have a medical exemption to which his response was , "I need to see it". Law was broken right there. At this point I began filming and I asked him , "so you are refusing service to me even after I told you I fall withing the Governor's exemptions for a medical condition?" He said, "it is the law" to which I corrected him that it was not law. He escorted me outside and locked the door behind me. I asked for owners name and contact information and he refused. Keep in mind HE had a mask and I was the only person in the store. He could have easily accommodated me. I videotaped the entire exchange. It was not violent or anything but completely wrong. I have written the Governor and have filed a complaint with the ADA as well. I still wish to speak to the owner about this matter but do not know who the person is. Basically, this person broke the law TWICE! Once by asking me my medical condition and written proof and once by refusing me service after he knew I have a medical condition preventing me from putting a mask on my face. I hope the owner calls me but I literally cannot hold my breathe. read more
