Arthur Murray Dance Studio Ashburn - Studio Owners Gabe and Leigh Gamboa

    Arthur Murray Dance Studio Ashburn

My wife and I have been taking lessons at this location for a little over six months. Our…read moreinstructor is terrific. She understands we are not interested in competing. She is positive and patient, not to mention that she is an excellent dancer. We are planning to sign up for another set of 24 lessons.

I have been attending Arthur Murray Ashburn for about 4 months now. There are 3 main reasons I…read morethink people come in: 1. They want to be able to dance at a wedding or event ($) 2. They want to be able to dance well anywhere ($$) 3. They want to become an expert dancer and compete against others. ($$$) I am in the second category, and I expect to take about a year's worth of dances. This is not inexpensive. If you just want to come in for a few lessons (#1, above) you can get out without a whole lot of money. I do feel like I am getting my money's worth, though. My private lesson is once per week (or more, if my instructor and I want to), but I can still come in every other night of the week for Group Lessons at no additional charge. Group classes really help and I encourage them (so do they). With that out of the way, let me say that the studio is completely above-board and great to deal with. My biggest concern was that I would "lose" a lesson. As in "I can't make it Tuesday night." "Oh, ok, well, that lesson still counts against you." That has never happened, and I am convinced now it won't. I have faith in management and I don't at all feel like they are trying to play a game with me and my money. Quite the contrary, everyone there is great to work with. By the way, I come in alone and dance with my instructor. They are fine with that. If you come in with your SO, you two can dance and the instructor will help out. No matter what, they will work with you. The instructors are terrific, and I really like all of them. They know what they are doing, they are fun, and I would recommend any and all of them. So this is a long review, but let me sum up by saying that I highly recommend this studio. If you stick around after the intro lessons for the Bronze 1 program, it won't be cheap, but you will really come away with some serious dance skills. Stop procrastinating and learn to Salsa! (or some other, lesser dance) :)

For legal reasons, I'm not going to go into detail about my problems with this studio. But I will…read moregive the gist of it: despite being a studio for children, the teachers -more specifically, the two women at the head of the ballet department- aren't very child-friendly. They're both elderly, stereotypical boomer type people, so I think you can imagine what their view of "children these days" is... The actual dance training might be objectively good (if you define 'good' as intense), but 'good training' shouldn't justify yelling at eight-year-olds for not being perfectly obedient and quiet 100% of the time. What I will say though, is that this dance studio feels very elitist. As a dancer who attended this studio for over a year before leaving, I experienced multiple classes where the previously mentioned teachers would go on unprompted rants where they would insult or degrade other local studios. And sometimes they would talk about professional ballet companies this way too! There's being proud of your success, and then there is snobbery. Pride shouldn't justify demeaning others. The ironic thing is that one time they actually started insulting a studio that I had previously been at prior to covid, talking about how "they weren't a ballet studio anymore." This other studio did/does teach ballet, they just had/have a focus on contemporary dance, but they were all around a friendly and accepting studio that I don't have any problems with. I will admit that it seems like this other studio was more ballet focused prior to when I joined, but to my knowledge, the teacher who had said this about them had never actually taught or been there. And regardless of whether what that ballet teacher said was true, that still doesn't justify her poking her nose into the business of another studio that by all accounts, she shouldn't care about. Joke is on that teacher though, because now I've returned to that other studio. In conclusion, this studio gives off very snobbish, elitist vibes, and the teacher-student interactions are very questionable -to put it nicely. I've been to a lot of studios throughout my dance training, but this place was hands down the worst.
