Paired with their signature burrito-like sandwiches and it's a match made in heaven. I did order the wrong thing at first. I ordered the French dip sandwich and it was actually incredibly bland. So I ended up eating my half of my husband's sandwich, the clubhouse paired with chipotle ranch, and it vindicated my lunch experience. Staggering OX has been a staple of my family for years! We love the bread guts and the fun sandwiches. They definitely struggled in the last year or so with staff shortages with unannounced closures and we have waited for almost an hour for our food several times -with understanding. It always gave us a good chance to visit and play Pokemon Go at the stop there. HOWEVER, I had to get online and give them a shout out as we were there yesterday and were flabbergasted at how fast our food came out even during some weird kind of 2pm rush. Ox used to be my fave. I loved going here when I lived in Helena and every time I come home to visit I have to get a club foot. My most recent visits fell short and left me missing what I once loved about Staggering Ox. The club foot was missing the key ingredients to call it a sandwich. It was more bread (delicious bread btw) but minimal "stuffing" and a huge price increase. I was about to give this place 2 stars, but after how they treated us, I had to bump it up an extra star. Known for its cylindrical bread container, Staggering Ox is a place to try at least once. We ordered a couple sandwiches and nachos. The sandwich had a lot of horseradish in it that we were glad that we ordered their "small" nachos. It fed our family of 5 adults and 2 kids. My mom had ordered a turkey melt, and midway she was wondering why it had pepperoni. My mom doesn't like spicy stuff nor does she complain. We told her we should bring it back as it wasn't the sandwich she ordered. We did and they remade her sandwich without any pushback. They also gave us a free sandwich card for our next visit. That was really going above and beyond our expectations as they already replaced the sandwich. The interior is bizarre with hanging records. If you go further back there's a bar. One thing is the bathroom. It had graphic pictures that I wouldn't want my nieces seeing. Large location, but family friendly might be a stretch. read more

I ordered the three mile island as recommended by a friend with blue horsey on the side. Not impress, the sandwich was different as far as presentation but the inside tasted like any other sandwich I could got anywhere. I got the cheesy bread guts for my toddler and he enjoyed eating it. I walked by this place a lot and I thought that the sandwiches looked weird. My daughter tried it and liked it though, and she said I should go there. So, we finally went together yesterday, and I will definitely go back. I tried the club sandwich it was pretty unique because they put guacamole on it. Also, you can get special sauce like ranch or chipotle ranch to go with your sandwich. I saw they had a lot of interesting sandwiches that I want to try like the philly and pizza melt. It does get busy at lunchtime though, so there could be a little wait to make your order. They offer a veteran/ military discount too which I appreciate. We split a Nuke in Garlic-Parmesan bread with Blue Horsie sauce. The Nuke was just ok. The bread and sauce were really good but we would recommend them with another sandwich or get additional meat on the Nuke....the bread and veggies overwhelmed the sandwich. We also split an All American...Angus burger with lettuce, tomato, bacon, pickles, onion, ketchup, mustard, and mayo. It was a good lunch offering and we both agreed it is worth repeating, which we did recently. I have been in love with The Ox since my freshman year and it is one of the eateries I must visit when I visit Helena. I have never had a bad ox sandwich. I started with the Mouse Trap and then went around the menu. My main sauce has always been Camel Spit but there are times when I would order a different sauce just to venture out of the norm but it's rare. The sandwich come in "barrel" formed bread with the "guts" removed. They then stuff the barrel with your preferred lunch choice and either give it to you cold or warm...depending on what you order. Now, when I speak of guts, it's the soft bread on the inside. You can also order bread guts so it doesn't go to waste. It's quite roomy in there now and the decor has changed a bit but it's still the artsy feel when you walk in. The hanging records are gone and I suspect they have been gone for a while but they share the seating area with a little quaint bar in the back that I have yet to venture to. The people at the counter are still the same happy folks who are willing to give suggestions if you are in need of one. They also told me that they would FedEx me a sandwich if I ever had a hankering. Tempting but I think they are best enjoyed when you take it home yourself :) In all, if you live in Helena, Bozeman, or Missoula then you know the The Ox. If you have never been to the cities and are looking for a sandwich place, I suggest giving this place a try. read more

To my astonishment, the Philly Melt tasted like someone threw a cow, the wrong type of cheese (monterey jack + swiss...wtf), and a 4'x8' sheet of oriented strand board into a Camden, NJ dumpster fire...then put it on a plate. Omg. So we go into this place to meet our son. We are not from Helena. The restaurant looks pretty cool when you walk in ... cool art and stuff. Then we start to try to find a place to sit... every single table and chair is dirty. The pop station is sticky gross. We look at the menu and decide what we want and have to stand literally in line for 10 mins. One young guy is taking orders. He is friendly enough. Another girl is working behind him behind a wall but she walks up front numerous times in her dirty shirt full Of holes and no bra but never jumps in on another register. Just looks around. Gross. We have always enjoyed the Staggering Ox's music and potato menu, but haven't been there all summer. A couple weeks ago I printed the live music calendar. We have always loved the String Beans; so planned on having dinner and enjoying the String Beans. Of course, we are regulars, so stood in line and gave our food and drink orders and then sat down in the back entertainment/disco area. Our nice hot potatoes were quickly delivered. Yes, they were still very tasty; but they were no longer a generous baked "dressed" potato. In fact they were perhaps a perhaps a paltry 1/4 cup of potato-same price! And then, the String Beans were not there - it was "Lula's Roadie" and much too loud. We quickly ate our dinner and escaped to a table in the other room. After several songs; we left. We have decided; yes, we will be back, but not for anything on the food menu. We'll order tea next time and eat at home. read more

I've lived in Helena for eight years and have always enjoyed the food and service offered at Staggering Ox. However, for the past couple years, I've noticed a sad decline in the portion sizes, cleanliness, and overall atmosphere. Today was the most disappointing visit yet. There were only two choices of bread compared to the usual variety of five. The French Dip I ordered was very small and flat (only 3/4 of an inch tall) and the fillings were skimpy at best. The ingredients tasted good, but the size of the sandwich was pathetic and hardly filling. The au jus was sour. As for customer service, there was an evident lack of crew members and I had to go to the back of the building (to Red Atlas) to order food. I noticed that the tables were sticky and dirty, and the overall atmosphere of the place was dead. Considering the base nearby, the Staggering Ox has usually been a popular place to eat for the local Joes. I wouldn't recommend it anymore, however; the sandwiches could fill up a kid, but definitely not a grown man. read more

Been going to the ox for years. Have had disputes with some rude staff before and the occasional food issue. I never would have given them below 3 stars. Today I ordered food for my accountant and myself. Her broccoli and cheese bowl with bacon arrived. The bacon was not cooked at all. It was still cold and slimy, not undercooked. Uncooked! My sandwich showed up and was the wrong meat and bread. I paid for cookies, ordered cookies. They didn't come. Somehow the money was taken, but cookies didn't end up on the reciept. Not going to bother to speak with management about this. Last time I spoke with a person who identified as management about an issue. I was treated very poorly. I just won't be going back. I can.
