Food is always great and the service is also perfect. Great portions and not in a rush to get you out the door.

Wow--Steve's Cafe has always been my #1 pick for great food in Helena, but after my experience today, I'm doubtful...My server, Dawn, left me alone for most of my visit; she served me with the bare minimum, & seemed unwilling or unable to answer the simplest menu questions about 2 items I hadn't tried before: The Cafe Monte Cristo is served on French Toast as a sandwich. She felt that was self-explanatory, so I took a chance & ordered it anyway. The second item I asked about was the Cafe Mocha, which is described as half coffee & half hot chocolate. Dawn repeated that to me; I went ahead & ordered it, because it's a nippy day outside, it sounded good, & Steve's prides itself on "whole bean Italian coffee". Dawn asked if I wanted whipped cream, & yes--that was the best part of this hot drink. It tasted like hot water with a bland chocolate flavor with no coffee flavor to be savored. Disappointment in a mug for $3.75. The Cafe Monte Cristo Sandwich looked promising when it arrived...but when I tasted it, the only thing which was flavorful was the bacon. The ham & turkey sliced deli meat was absolutely indistinguishable for any flavors of ham or turkey! ($14.95; scarcely any powdered sugar on the French Toast, either, which is a hallmark of a Monte Cristo...& no, it isn't deep-fried in any batter, but the French Toast is a clever substitution & departure from the original.) I ate half of it & boxed the other half...the French Toast was bland, too--very little flavor. My side item was something I always look forward to here, because so few restaurants serve onion rings anymore! These are a $2.00 up charge, & I told Dawn I like them on the light side, not too dark--& these came out close to being dark, & they must have sat in the grease, because they were tough on the outside...not the best onion rings by far. Disappointment again! I came here anticipating another great experience at Steve's Cafe, & it was completely disappointing until Alivia appeared: Alivia noticed I appeared to be waiting, & I was--because I saw on my check that the Cafe Mocha comes with ONE REFILL! Dawn never mentioned nor offered me a refill, but Alivia did--& yes, that's exactly how to spell her name, which is pronounced as "Olivia". Alivia gave me a to-go cup with a lid, & whipping cream & all, that excellent but of genuine "Customer Service" kept this review from being one star! Purely because of Alivia, I will return to Steve's Cafe the next time I'm in Helena, a 100+ miles from home! Let's start with the Good! When I walked in I was immediately greeted and offered to sit at the bar or a table. The host was really nice and the place was packed for a Wednesday. After being seated at the bar I looked over the HUGE menu and decided on the Sausage Sampler with hash browns ( So I thought) two over medium eggs and fruit salad. The sausage was okay but the hash browns were not brown at all!! Which confused me as it is literally the name of the food. I didn't even bother trying them Because they weren't cooked. The eggs were nothing to write home about either. When the hash whites came out of the kitchen I was surprised that a cook thought this was a good idea. Either way, the breakfast is mediocre at best. While vacationing in Helena, I looked to Yelp for a breakfast recommendation and Steve's popped up with lots of praise. Once again Yelp was right on target. This place is top notch with a loyal following. There were 6 of us in our group and everyone had something different. I had a breakfast burrito that was both delicious and big. The huckleberry pancakes were described as fantastic. Even with 6 of us the service was excellent and the food all came out together and hot. My wife and I had breakfast this morning 4/27/26 I had biscuits and gravy with hash browns the gravy was not good at all the biscuits crumbled apart like they were dry our hash browns taste as if they were cooked in old grease or on a dirty grill . We have been coming to Steve's for years and the quality of the food has drastically decreased i apologize for this bad review but we will not be coming back. read more

Too small of a town and restaurant to have a rude waitress, went for breakfast first it was like for ever for her to come around to our table. Then when she brought our coffee over it was like two mugs were to heavy , as she slammed them down, after our food was served she was gone never to see her again at our table (too busy visiting with friends) food was nothing special, so we'll go to one of the other restaurants serving breakfast with kinder waitress/waiters. read more

Really good breakfast food here with Gluten free options! Large portions great food great service very fast! Clean place nice clean and well stocked restrooms here. Gluten free pancakes were giant! And tasty. Try the huckleberry anything here. The Irish eggs Benedict are their specialty and they don't disappoint. There was a large selection of gluten free items here which was great because my daughter has celiac and wasn't limited to just one menu item. Our server Sean was very friendly and attentive. This place was jam packed, but they served us quickly and efficiently. The restrooms are something nice to mention. They have two single restrooms that they keep very clean and well stocked. What an amazing find for breakfast!! We had the hash breakfast and the sausage sampler breakfast and shared. Delicious! Atmosphere is homey and inviting. Dawn, our server, was very friendly and helpful. She suggested her favorites which have now become our favorites next time we're in town. I took my family to Steves cafe for the first time today. We had heard good things and it was nearly two o'clock in the afternoon and they close at 2:30 so I called them and asked them if we could come in and if we did if we wouldn't be rushed out at 2:30. They assured us that we could finish our lunch so we went in to have a meal. I got a bbq bacon cheeseburger, ($13.75) and my wife got a taco salad, (can't remember the price). My burger was decent, it had VERY GOOD THICK bacon, but it wasn't anything super special. I got a salad with my burger and it was just basic iceberg/carrot/red cabbage mix. That's the lettuce mix that was in my wife's taco salad too. And then we paid over $9 for a kids burger meal. The French fries were good and hot, but again, it wasn't anything outlandishly special, and the prices were extremely high. The only other things we got were two buttermilk pancakes for $4.50, and two coffees and two chocolate milks. Overall it wasn't a huge meal, but with tip it was $60, so I found that quite expensive. Nadine, our server, was very sweet and kind, and everyone there was nice though. Not quite as good of a value as I'd hoped, but worth checking out. read more

Went to Steve's Cafe while on vacation in Helena. It's a really great place for breakfast or lunch. When there I ordered the 3 Meat Scramble with Hashbrowns and Pancakes as my two side items. I also ordered an extra side order of 3 sausage links. Really enjoyed dining at this place. It was quaint, cozy and had great food. I really enjoy a traditional cafe lunch. Steve's fit the bill perfectly. They were definitely busy when we came in, but the team had no problem taking care of us. A long standing Helena tradition for breakfast or lunch (closed by 2). We always make it a point to visit at least once when we are here visiting. The decor is a bit kitschy and old fashioned but isn't that what you would expect with a cafe? It's always spotlessly clean and well lit. The menu offers lots of great breakfast choices and there is a daily special. The youngest ordered pancakes and sausage but didn't like the real maple syrup that was served with it (he'd rather have McDonalds syrup he declared). The teen ordered an omelette. My DD ordered the stuffed French toast which is her favorite. I went with the special which was a carb heavy combination of a biscuit served on a bed of hash browns and covered in sausage gravy with scrambled eggs. That stuck with me until it was time for diner! Our waiter couldn't have been more attentive. He answered all our questions and made sure our coffee remained topped off and hot. The definition of a homey rustic breakfast cafe. The service staff here is very friendly and they are on top of their game. The food comes out quick, warm, and delicious. I decided to try their Mexican Chipotle sausage which was unique. It had a spiciness to it that was tasty. The eggs satisfied my morning craving by being done near perfection. The hashbrowns were good but not great. The toast was buttered and crispy. Mix all of that together and you have yourself an ideal breakfast. The coffee was pretty good. Our waitress and other staff members would stop by multiple times an hour to ensure that we had enough. I would go back to this place. Steve's has a nice variety breakfast menu for your whole family. This was my first time ever trying huckleberry and it surely will not be my last. The pancakes were good but I could drink the huckleberry syrup. The Garden Omelette was kind of meh, I added chicken sausage which was good but the avocado wasn't fresh and the eggs were a bit dry.
