Villa Appalaccia Winery is a self sufficient vineyard and bottling operation with a variety of Italian inspired wines. The grounds are breathtaking with mountainside views and Italian inspired architecture complete with a stone fired pizza gazebo. They had live music on the porch which was such a lovely perk. The staff was very welcoming, warm laid back and kind. Tastings are $15 and worth every penny to taste all 8 of their featured wines. All of the wines are dry, which I loved but they also had one dessert wine, a bubbly prosecco, and a rosé sangria. All the wines had unique and interesting noses and were clean and balanced, many vintages having won awards. The Sangiovese was my favorite. The winemaker also let me try a coveted sip of "The Buffalo" wine which is aged in bourbon barrels giving it a rich leggy, almost fortified texture and finish that is very unique on the palate. This is a must stop destination if you are so fortunate to be in the area of Floyd, you will not leave dissatisfied.

Now I didn't hurt that she was from Texas and so are we which gave us a lot to talk about but we really enjoyed spending some time learning about her and her husband the new ownership and just their plans for growing this winery. I would say that they definitely have a passion for serving others and have already engaged in the community raising money for different charities their biggest one recently was one for a cancer charity. I'm not much of a wine drinker my wife is but after tasting the Chardonnay which was fantastic we decided to share a bottle and they also have a bourbon barrel aged Cabernet which is amazing. We promptly came home joined the wine club and will definitely be back because it's only about a 30 minute drive from Greensboro. They have music and food trucks on average about twice a month and I can promise you that when you go you'll get good wine and be treated well.

There is a large offering of over 20 varieties. One of the current owners led our tasting and gave us detailed explanations of the history and thought process behind each wine. There are 11 wines that were the original Autumn Creek wines and then the new owners have added some new wines and new blends under the label Gioia dell'Amore Cellars. We liked all of the wines that we tasted. Our favorites were the Diamond Girl White & Red Blends and the Embrace Meritage red blend. After our tasting we purchased a bottle of Diamond Girl Red to enjoy on property. Outside the tasting room are a large deck and a brick patio with sweeping views of grapevines, a pond, a waterfall, a gazebo, a covered area and an event venue (where an anniversary party was taking place). They made me and my group feel comfortable, safe and welcomed. The property itself is quaint and sweet. We strolled through their small lavender field, visited the gift shop and a few weekend vendors selling jewelry, soaps and other goods. Everyone was warm and friendly. The bar had a wide array of wines and organized the bottles (so reasonably priced or just $7 per glass) by red, white and dry to semi-sweet or sweet. Four of us split two bottles of the semi-sweet white wine. It was given to us in a bowl of ice with plastic cups. Everyone wore masks and they sold me one for $2 (masks required for everyone interacting at the bar or inside the gift shop establishment). The white win was just sweet enough and so refreshing on the warm late June afternoon. However, it was their specialty pizza that truly made the experience extra-ordinary. Their lavender specialty pizza was phenomenal. I was blown away by the lavender-infused pizza sauce. I've never had such a unique pizza and would return just for a slice of the artisanal masterpiece. It comes topped with greens, feta, grapes, bacon (which I omitted) and a lemon balsamic. The bread itself was light and the crust was seasoned and fresh tasting. I can't say enough about this pizza. Do me a favor and try it for yourself. All in all, this was the perfect treat (and reward) for an 8-mile round trip hike. Highly recommend!
