We had a lovely visit here where we enjoyed the scenic, hilly atmosphere and a nice patio and gazebo to sit and enjoy wine. We were here in January 2021 and of course had to be indoors to do any wine tasting. We could see that they were taking cares to separate customers, ensure that they wore their masks when not sipping wine, and overall were trying to make folks safe. We had a lovely time here but we weren't blown away by the wines. The whites were better than the reds; we're told their sweet and fruit wines are more popular but that's not really our thing. The shop indoors was very cute with a great selection of curios, knick-knacks, wine-themed stuff, soaps, and candles. I'd go for the Gewurtzramminer or Riesling if I had to get another glass, and I'd definitely recommend anyone in the area coming by to enjoy the view and warmth of the team here. read more

Found this winery near the campground we were staying at in Wytheville. There was a cute selection of knick knacks and various charcuterie supplies. We paid $10 to sample 8 wines (they only had 7 so we got to double sample one): 1 white (a pretty standard dry Riesling- I wasn't super impressed with it, it wasn't bad but wasn't great), 3 reds (great tasting Chambourcin, a pretty standard Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Galena Creek Red which was a super smooth blend I think?) and 3 fruit wines (2 red and one white, the white tasted like muscadine but was a different grape, one was a tasty blackberry wine) We chose to grab 2 glasses and sit out on their porch swing under a pretty pergola with wisteria growing above it. It was really nice to sit out there and enjoy the weather. We left with 3 bottles. Not the best winery I've been to but I'm glad I went and got to support a small grower. Would return for another afternoon sip. read more

West Wind was one of my favorite visits of my 4 day trip, not just because of the wine but because Jessica was an awesome server. 5 acres of grapes, and they make around 1500 cases/year. The selection was a mix of dry, off-dry, and sweet wines (including some fruit wines). The prices were very good; mostly $15 a bottle, with only the most expensive ones over $20. The location is small but the view of the vineyard is wonderful. They have a lot of hybrids and North American grapes but (unlike some neighbors) have more than a few acres of vinifera as well. This includes Cabernet Sauvignon (possibly the only grower in this area) and Gewürztraminer, one of the few vineyards with this grape in all Virginia. I really liked the steel-based Gewürztraminer, but thought the Riesling was the best of the pick (and bought a bottle). The powerful finish of the Chambourcin was nice too. Not tried were the Vidal Blanc or fruit wines, including one made with Concord. read more

My husband and I (and our dog!) had a lovely time at West Wind for our anniversary! The property is absolutely beautiful and incredibly quiet and peaceful. Despite a seemingly full parking lot we still had plenty of privacy and our own space to enjoy. The owner was extremely welcoming and even brought our dog a bowl of water. The wine we tried was delicious and there is an adorable gift shop. We highly recommend stopping by West Wind and are planning on being regulars at this winery! read more

Charming place to take in a glass of wine on break when making the drive up and down I-77. We realized that on your way north, it pays to get off I-77 onto US52 to bypass the merge of 77 onto 81 at Wytheville. This detour takes you right past West Wind. We tasted most everything they had. The lady helping us was so friendly and helpful. The setting is beautiful. We took a glass outside on a June afternoon at 1PM with the calm breezes cutting the upper 70's temps perfectly. Our favs were the Galena River Red and White. I'm finishing a bottle of the red right now as inspiration to write my review. We'll be stopping back again as we make trips north along I-77. read more

Nestled in the mountains near Wythevile VA, this small vineyard was a really pleasant find on our trip through the area. I recommend the Galen Creek Blend red wine. Friendly staff; plenty of outdoor seating under the trees or a gazebo with beautiful Mountain views. read more

Amazing place tucked away on a quiet road and between very scenic hills. On a recent trip to North Carolina my husband and I noticed the sign off the road and decided to make a little detour in our drive.. and I am so glad we did. Never one to pass up a vineyard this seemed like the perfect thing to do! I will have to come back sometime to try the wines, regretfully so I was unable to due to really bad allergies and not being able to taste a single thing at all. I did have a chance to enjoy the beautiful grounds and well curated gift shop. Literally everything was cute in here! The knick knacks and wine glasses and soaps and amazing smelling candles.. I bought a little candle in a tin which was scented like Lilacs; it made our car smell like a field of flowers. Dreamy. (Yes, I am a weirdo and sometimes light candles in my car). I can see this place being a wonderful summer destination, when the fields are filled with grapes and the sun is shining. I had no idea that West Virginia was such a wine region, the owner told me that this vineyard is part of many in a trail of vineyards throughout the region. We randomly stumbled upon this adorable vineyard while we were filling up at a gas station near Max Meadows. The SO and I were driving back to Columbus, OH from Raleigh, NC after a wedding. I knew that Virginia has tons of great wineries, so I pulled up my Yelp app, and lo and behold, West Wind was close by! Plus it had a Yelp check-in offer for a free, etched glass (couldn't resist the free glass, LOL). Upon arrival, we were blown away by the breathtaking beauty of the property. The gentleman helping us let us sample various wines. It was my first time trying Chambourcin and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the varietal. We purchased a bottle of the Chambourcin and went to the nearby shaded seating area to enjoy some of the afternoon and the views. Thanks Yelp for leading us to this cute little vineyard! read more

Couldn't ask for better service. Deanna took care of us from start to finish.the store contains the cutest gifts and she even recommend some of the best sellers to us. Our wine tasting was awesome. Almost went with the free tasting that included 3 choices because I typically only like red wine. So glad I went with the full wine tasting because my favorite ended up being white! Each wine was explained prior to pour and she was very knowledgable answering questions. She even included a sampling of the wine slushy a which my boyfriends parents ended up getting full glasses of because they were amazing. Sitting on he patio with a bottle of wine, local cheese and crackers is just such a great time. read more

Love them!! My husband and I live in Virginia Beach, but love West Wind wine so much that we planed a vacation in Galax just to visit the winery. All of the wines are amazing. Another great, pure Virginia winery experience. The wine is fantastic....I will surely be buying more online as this place is a bit too far for a quick weekend jaunt (near I-81 and I-77's intersection in SW Virginia). You know you've gone a long way when you see highway signs for Mt. Airy, NC (aka Mayberry). The owners were busy out in the fields mowing and building an outdoor stage. But they were genuinely happy to take care of visitors. Even offering additional tastings since we "came down so far." My favorites were the "Galena" labels (named after a nearby river)...white and red blends. Excellent summer wines. But everything on the list was a winner. Definitely worth checking out if you're driving down to Charlotte, NC or find yourself on I-77. read more

We were venturing our way down 77/81 on our usual route back to North Carolina and decided to make a little rest stop to this little gem-- and we were so glad that we did. We ventured in and we were the only people... it was Monday at 230pm what else would we expect! The gentleman working was wonderful! I can't remember his name, but I know he went to UVA and he was 38. He was patient and we had a great chat even with our 5 month old in the baby carrier in front of me. (momma needs a little fun!) he did a great job explaining the wines and letting us walk and taste as we wanted to. We ended up getting a bottle of the River White and took it with our packed lunch out to the patio. We were able to let our dog sit there on a leash. The breeze and the scenery were absolutely perfect!! We will most definitely be making this our regular "rest area" on our trip back from Canton, Ohio. Don't let the 3.8 or whatever it is miles off the freeway deter you. Completely and utterly worth it!! read more

Great stop along the way to DC where I 77 and I81 meet. Did a full tasting and found the sweet wines to be my favorite, despite not being a sweet wine fan. The others didn't really stand out but most of the grapes are estate so kudos to them. The lady doing the tasting was extremely friendly though she did not speak much about the wine. The tasting room was quaint and full of local and commercial products befitting of any wine-goer. I would like to try them again in a year or so to see how they evolve. read more

For my 21st birthday I went here with my boyfriend and mother for some wine tasting and lunch one word: AMAZING! Right when we got there we were greeted by a very kind women who immediately served us our wine samples. The wine is so delicious! Even one of the workers let all of us go in the back and taste some wines out of the barrels which was amazing because I had never done that. After that we went into the dining area to have lunch. Right when we walked in a man was singing and playing his guitar which made the atmosphere so relaxing. The food was absolutely delicious and the man who served us was so friendly and very attentive to us. You can tell this vineyard is family run and is something that they take great pride in. This was one of the best birthdays I have had by far and was the most relaxed I have been in a long time. I have even planned on having a get together there when I graduate college. If you are looking for a relaxing, beautiful, and friendly vineyard this is the place. Definitely a hidden gem and one I plan on coming back to. read more
