Forget about Home Depot and Lowes. These guys have it all, and the people who work here are super-helpful and know what they're doing. Prices are comparable, and frankly, I'll pay a buck or two more to support a small local business who truly values my patronage. Easy to park and navigate, and again.. the service can't be equalled by a big box. read more

They know everything and will recommend the right product and give you wonder little gems of hardware wisdom to go with it. They are always eager to help and it's for real! They aren't working on commission, they genuinely want to help you. The store itself, while small, has everything and anything you could ever need and never have I ever seen anything out of stock. The people at Stanley's are very helpful as soon as they see you. At first I thought it was odd that they are so attentive, and I usually don't like people at stores asking me "can I help you?" every other minute ... but here, I've turned it into a game. I go in and as soon as they ask, I tell them whatever odd thing I'm looking for, thinking that they won't have it and what do you know, they have it. Even if something may not be out on the shelf, they will either magically find it in their storage, they will order it for you, or they will suggest something else. This is our go to hardwear place A real throw back in that people know what you are talking about when you come in and explain the problem in that confused language most of us use when trying to get across a hardware need( " ...the nut with the thing and then there's a pipe" ) Just a few words in and they are nodding. Because they have heard it all before. They have anything you could want in small to mid size hardware , frankly an amazing selection for their size. I couldn't believe the hobby supply on top of the regular stuff. It's one of those places where you go for a light bulb and see dozens of other items you need but don't see else wear. I find each dept an education in the given discipline. The service is remarkable, because you are asked alot if they can help, and yet it's not a pain in the buttinsky like it would be else where ...and often it's just when you realize, hey, you do need help . Here's a true story. I dropped off a 20 year old K-mart ceramic lamp to be rewired. Before doing the job, they called me to explain the job would cost more than the lamp was worth and did I really want it done? I realized in that case, I didn't and told them to ditch it . When I was a kid there was a hardware store in our neighborhood that had just about anything you needed. The clerk knew who you were and remembered your last project. I moved to Roxborough and found Stanley's True Value, I was surprised to get that same service. They have anything you might need and if they don't have it, they will order it for you. They have seasoned people who can tell you what to do and more importantly what not to do. When you go you will be greeted with a warm smile and then you will hear, "So what brings you in today?" It feels like you are chatting with an old friend, and in some ways you are. This hardware store has it ALL! Growing up, I always had a hardware store closeby, and my father (the ultimate DIY'er) would usually let me tag along with him to buy odds and ends. After moving to another neighborhood, I would still drive back to my old stomping grounds to get keys made and whatnot. That was...until I found Stanley's. I literally did find it, too. I was driving to the ACME up the road and drove past it. It used to be housed in a really small space. Despite its size, they had EVERYTHING you could ever need jam-packed into there. I'm glad they've expanded their store. It's really nice and bright inside, and you can find whatever you need quickly. You really would not have to go searching for long though; the employees there are all so genuinely helpful. Not only have I had keys made there, but I've purchased torque bits, washers, aluminum wire, flowers and gardening tools just to name a few things. Hey, being around Daddy I learned a lot! I'm that guy you always see sweating with the look of concern on my face- but never fear. EVERYONE in this store is helpful, even the grumpy paint counter guy. They will walk you to the exact item you didn't know you needed. Yes, you WILL pay more than you would at Lowe's and Home Depot but you won't get the community, helpful experience. Stanley's is wonderful! I have been going there for small projects since before they recently expanded, and I've had a positive experience every time. Every staff member that I've dealt with has been knowledgeable, incredibly helpful, and quick. Now, they've at least tripled their size, added a garden section, and greatly expanded the merchandise they carry. You can get anything you need for home improvement, gardening, hardware, etc. at Stanley's. The best part about them is that I have gone in with very random, not specific questions ("How can I mount this to a brick wall?" or "I need to hang this really heavy mirror without ripping the drywall.") and the employees will spend lots of time helping you without making you feel silly. Great place !! I've lived in Manayunk on and off for 4 years now. I never noticed this place until the last year when I really needed a few things for the new house. This place has it all. They always have things in stock or can order it for you right away. Like the previous comment, I too was a little creeped out when the staff gangs up on you asking if you need help. Coming to terms, they are the most well informed staff of any retail / department / hardware store that I've been to. They know where everything is, they can help depending on your situation or needs, and go out of their way to get you exactly what you want. Above all, they all look like they enjoying working there. It's a breathe of fresh air compared to the rest of shops around town and it's the ONLY hardware store in Manayunk. As small as it is I've never seen it overly crowded or terribly out of stock. Store has everything that you might need, very well stocked. Very clean, organized and extremely well staffed. There are employees walking the floors at all times asking customers if they need help. Without fail, every time I've set foot in the store no less than 2 or 3 people will ask me if I need help looking for anything while I'm walking the aisles. If you've ever been to home depot, you know how hard it is to find help. Not the case here. Stanley's feels like a small neighborhood hardware store run by the friendly locals. If you are nearby and have hardware store needs, I would high recommend here. They also have a paint mixing station so you can buy gallons of paint in any color you want here. They save the paint info under your house address so you will never forget what paint you need for touch up. read more

Admittedly, it's a little weird that I love a HARDWARE store so much I'm compelled to review it, but yes...that's how bomb Stanley's is. I'm pretty sure if I had been born in the Leave it to Beaver days, this is how one would have been treated at the local shops. These guys here bend over backwards (and not in any creepy or annoying way) to help you find whatever it is you need (and bets are, they have it). Huh??! We discovered these guys through you Yelpers when we moved here last year and were sure it was too good to be true when our first encounter was as great as it was. Stanley's is simply awesome, and perfectly fitted in the Manayunk/Roxsborough way of life, with rentals, old houses, and a walkable distance. Every time I stop in I find everything I need quick & easy (not the case at big box Lowes or Home Depot, wandering aisles searching) and best yet, at Stanley's as soon as you enter there's someone ready to help even in the new big store. Stopped by this Sunday for a list of house odds & ends, and the associate who greeted me at the door got me through the store, found every single item on my list, made recommendations, and even found a piece not out on the shelf to fit a special request. I was in and out with every single piece in less than 10 minutes, and affordably. There's nothing like the service you get at this store, every time. It's a Roxsborough landmark, and great that they have the all new large store now. Stop by any time and have a great time shopping. read more

The sales staff is super helpful. I was admittedly a little overwhelmed by the guy helping us, I'm the sort of person who will just wander around looking at things while I figure out what I need, but ultimately I'm glad he did. The store looks small but is packed to the gills with stuff, so having a guide to sort through it is helpful. Prices aren't much worse than your local Home Despot, and you can get in and out in half the time because you don't have to trek back and forth across a huge warehouse constantly. read more

Couldn't agree with "La C." anymore. The first time I went in there I was creeped out at how many people tried to help me and immediately thought that the associates must work on commission or something. I quickly grabbed a couple things (without help) and scurried out the door. HOWEVER, I couldn't have been more wrong. I came back the next day because I bought the wrong item and had an associate help me locate the correct item, return the wrong item, describe how to use the purchased item and offered to draw a diagram for me so that I couldn't screw it up (and I could screw anything up). I have lived in Manayunk for 3 weeks and have not gone more than 3 days in a row without coming back, for everything from top soil, to tools, to hardware, this is the best place to go hands down. No big box store can offer the genuine helpfulness that Stanley's can. read more

I think the other reviews say it pretty well. Customer service is this place's middle name. They are so very attentive and friendly. I just bought a fixer-upper home so I have been there a lot. It's a pleasure to go there rather than hike it to Home Depot or Lowe's where the service is substandard. The inventory isn't as great as a DIY superstore, but they prices are reasonable and if they don't have it, they can get it for you. They have lots of options on everything from gardening to paint to all home improvement stuff. Parking is good and it's in a handy location in Roxborough. Also, a great deal is using their frequent user True Value card where you'll receive $10 off after $250, so it pays to come back, too. read more

Forget Lowes and Home Depot. You want to shop here. This is a mom and pop place that's been around forever, and the staff is genuinely eager to help, and they know everything! At Home Depot, you might get one out of 5 people that can help solve a problem. I never asked the ladies at the register, but all of the Stanley's floor sales staff can always help. You are going to pay an extra dollar for that can of primer, but you see that guy who you're paying that dollar to while you're there. You can't give this place anything less than five stars IMO. The staff is awesome, and so helpful. They have just about everything you could need, given it's size, which is an impressive feat. I live right around the corner and this is my first stop before heading to the big box stores. I can't tell you how many times I have been stranded at a Lowe's or Home Depot with no help, I have even seen employees flat out avoid customers so as not to help them. At Stanley's, you cant get halfway in the store without a staff member asking if you need help, and it makes a yuge difference. Great store, great people! read more

So - I'm split. Yes, the service here is excellent. Honestly, I had a bad experience renting equipment here but otherwise, you can't beat the services. But, the prices are kind of crazy expensive. I mean, 20-30% more than other neighborhood hardware stores (not Home Depot). Why is it so expensive? Sometimes I go to Ricklins, a hardware store in Narberth where you get essentially the same great service but even there, in the Main Line, the prices are cheaper. I don't get it. I love Stanley's. I live right around the corner, so any time I need to repair something, I can drive here in less than five minutes. When I moved to the neighborhood, Jared J recommended I use this hardware store, so my dad and I went over to get my locks re-keyed. We couldn't believe how helpful everyone was--someone came up to us right when we walked in to ask how we were doing and if they could help--and the fantastic service has been there every time I've gone back. I found the prices to be either on par with or cheaper than the big box stores (and they even carry some things that the big box stores don't--like aluminum dryer vents!). The prices combined with the store's proximity to my house have made it my go-to hardware store. read more

I needed some Benjamin Moore paint on a Sunday and Stanley's was one of the few nearby retailers open that day, so I figured I'd take a drive and get it there. I don't take the time to write reviews very often anymore, but when a place is this exceptional I feel the need. The store is conveniently located with a nice parking lot, and almost immediately I noticed the high quality seasonal plants as I approached the door - some of which I had trouble finding when I was doing some fall planting. I was asked if I needed assistance right away and the staff was friendly, well tutored and very helpful. I was very pleasantly surprised at the large selection of products inside the store. I look forward to returning to Stanley's, as I can't think of a nicer hardware store I've ever ventured into. They have robust hours, friendly and knowledgable employees and a vast / high quality product selection. They even answer the phone quickly when you call. I have an old house, and my tub faucet was leaking. I pulled the valve stems and took one to Stanley's to get replacement washers. Ernie took it, sized it up, cleaned it up, and showed me how all the washers need to fit together. (see photo) Ernie's the BEST! read more

Best Service for any hardware store, possibly ever since the advent of the big box store. Small, local hardware store where everyone is knowledgeable. They even do small repairs for a fee (I.e. Accidentally chopped my extension cord when cutting the hedges). Prices may be slightly higher but service and convenience makes up for it! read more

Customer service is this stores primary concern and they hit the nail on the head EVERY TIME you come in. Not only will they greet you when you walk in, they will take you to what you need and if you have any questions, they will take the time to explain how to best complete the project. I thought I purchased a stain/poly there for a door I was refinishing. The batch was bad and I tried to return it. Turns out I didn't buy it there, but the manager took the can from me and said he would return it to the manufacturer AND gave me a new can! I have never received customer service like I do at Stanly's on the Ridge. This store deserves your business and will ensure you are a happy customer again and again! read more

This is the nearest hardware store to my new townhouse in Manayunk, where I moved to after my ex-wife (Cynthia) and I got divorced. I came here in order to purchase a new smoke alarm, since good fire safety is really important no matter where you live. Back when I as still with Cynthia and our twin sons Brandon and Bryan, we had a small kitchen fire. Did you ever hear Dave Barry (my FAVORITE!) talk about Pop Tarts? That happened to us -- I put them in the oven a bit too long and they caught fire. I went into our office because I was running some Excel spreadsheets as part of my work as an actuary -- we had some risk valuation models about a refurbished loft in Northern Liberties (have to get down there now that I'm living in the city) due. Thankfully, Cynthia heard the smoke alarm in time (I was in "the zone") and put out the fire. We needed a new toaster but thankfully no one got hurt. In retrospect, that was one of the first things that led to the end of my 14-year marriage. I just go so focused about work that it took precedence over being there for Cynthia and B&B. I really regret that in retrospect -- I love being an actuary, but I needed more of a work/life balance. Thankfully, HR at my place of business has a "help line" that I've called recently in order to help me devise a strategy to better balance my work and actual life. However, Cynthia and B&B (Brandon and Bryan) now live in Glenside. It's not too far but they're not here and I don't know where to begin. Stanley's had a great selection of smoke detectors. The staff there was super helpful in helping me find a great choice. I feel safe in case anything happens and also bought some backup batteries just in case. I would recommend Stanley's Hardware to anyone who lives in the Manayunk/Roxborough area and needs a smoke alarm because you just moved into a new townhouse and you now know what it's like to feel lonely. read more
